Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(A)(B)(C)
8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people;(D) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(E) 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(F) 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(G) 12 He sighed deeply(H) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(I) of the Pharisees(J) and that of Herod.”(K)
16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(L) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,”(M) they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”(N)
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(O)
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 They came to Bethsaida,(P) and some people brought a blind man(Q) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(R) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(S) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[a] the village.”
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(U) others say Elijah;(V) and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(W)
30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(X)
Jesus Predicts His Death(Y)
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(Z) must suffer many things(AA) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AB) and that he must be killed(AC) and after three days(AD) rise again.(AE) 32 He spoke plainly(AF) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(AG) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
The Way of the Cross
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AH) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(AI) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(AJ) will be ashamed of them(AK) when he comes(AL) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

Jesus Feeds Four Thousand.[a] 1 In those days, a great crowd had again assembled, and they had nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, 2 “I am moved with compassion for these people, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way—and some of them have come from far off.”
4 His disciples replied, “How can anyone find enough bread here in this deserted place to feed these men?” 5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They replied, “Seven.”
6 Jesus ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the people. 7 There were also a few small fish, and after blessing them he commanded that these too should be distributed. 8 They ate and were satisfied. Afterward, the disciples picked up the fragments left over—seven full baskets. 9 The people there numbered about four thousand. And when he had sent them away, 10 he immediately got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.[b]
11 The Demand for a Sign.[c] The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him. To put him to the test they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 12 Sighing from the depths of his spirit, he said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 Then he left them, got into the boat again, and sailed across to the other side.
14 The Yeast of the Pharisees.[d] They had forgotten to bring any bread with them, and they had only one loaf in the boat. 15 Jesus then gave them this warning, “Be careful, and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.” 16 They talked about this to one another and concluded: “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Becoming aware of what they were discussing, he said to them, “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes and fail to see? Do you have ears and fail to hear?
“And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets filled with fragments did you collect?” They answered, “Twelve.” 20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets filled with fragments did you collect?” They answered, “Seven.” 21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
22 Jesus Heals a Blind Man.[e] They arrived at Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged that he touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Then, putting saliva on his eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything?” 24 Looking up, the man responded, “I can see people, but they look like trees walking around.” 25 Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and the man looked around intently. His sight was restored, and he was able to see everything clearly. 26 Then he sent him away to his home, saying, “Do not even go into the village.”
27 Peter’s Confession That Jesus Is the Messiah.[f] Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 They responded, “[Some say] John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 “But you,” he asked, “who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 Then he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.
The Mystery of Jesus Is Revealed[g]
The Way of the Son of Man[h]
31 Jesus Predicts His Passion.[i] After that, he began to teach them that the Son of Man must endure great suffering, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,[j] and be put to death, and rise again after three days. 32 He told them these facts in plain words.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 At this, Jesus turned and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are thinking not as God does, but as men do.”
34 The Conditions of Discipleship.[k] He then called the people and his disciples to him and said to them, “Anyone who wishes to follow me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 35 [l]For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the sake of the gospel will save it. 36 What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his very life? 37 Indeed, what can he give in exchange for his life?
38 “If anyone in this adulterous and sinful generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

- Mark 8:22 Jesus’ actions and the healing of the blind man seem to have the same purpose as his actions and the healing of the deaf mute (see Mk 7:3-37). Some scholars regard both healings as a means of expressing the gradual enlightenment of the disciples about Jesus’ Messiahship.
- Mark 8:27 Many scholars believe that Peter’s confession of Jesus’ Messiahship constitutes the central point of this Gospel. It is the decisive doctrinal turning point in which we have the end of the Messianic Secret. Up to this point Jesus demanded the greatest secrecy about the mystery of his person. Henceforth, Jesus utters repeated exhortations concerning the following of the Messiah.
The apostles had recognized the Messiah through Peter’s confession in spite of the humble and insignificant appearances of their Master’s public activity. Now they must cling with faith to the suffering Messiah and accept the scandal of the cross. - Mark 8:31 Where are we to find the revelation that God wants to communicate to humanity? We must look to the cross, understand and share the condition of Jesus, and answer the call that he gives us to follow him. It is a suffering and humiliated Christ who saves the human race. Of this Mark is certain.

Jesus ger mat åt 4 000 personer

8 Nu hände det än en gång att mycket folk hade samlats, och att de inte hade något att äta. Jesus kallade då på sina lärjungar och sa:
2 ”Jag känner medlidande med dessa människor. De har varit hos mig i tre dagar och har inget att äta. 3 Om jag skickar hem dem hungriga, kommer de att svimma av utmattning längs vägen. En del av dem bor ju långt härifrån.”
4 Men hans lärjungar svarade: ”Var ska man få tag på tillräckligt med mat åt alla dessa människor här i ödemarken?”
5 Jesus frågade dem: ”Hur många bröd har ni?” ”Sju”, svarade de.
6 Då bad Jesus folket att slå sig ner på marken, och han tog de sju bröden, tackade Gud för dem och bröt dem i bitar. Sedan gav han bitarna till sina lärjungar, som i sin tur delade ut dem till folket. 7 Man hade dessutom några små fiskar, och Jesus tackade Gud för dem också och bad sedan sina lärjungar att dela ut dem.
8 De åt och blev mätta, och när man samlade ihop det som var över, blev det sju hela korgar. 9 Det var omkring 4 000 män[a] där. Jesus skickade sedan hem folket 10 och steg i en båt och åkte till trakten av Dalmanuta[b] tillsammans med sina lärjungar.
De religiösa ledarna vill se ett tecken från Gud
(Matt 16:1-4)
11 Fariseerna kom ut för att diskutera med Jesus, och för att pröva honom krävde de ett tecken från himlen.
12 Jesus suckade djupt och sa: ”Varför söker detta släkte efter ett tecken? Sannerligen säger jag er: detta släkte ska inte få något tecken.” 13 Sedan lämnade han dem och steg i båten igen och åkte över till andra sidan.
Jesus varnar för falsk undervisning
(Matt 16:5-12)
14 Lärjungarna hade glömt att ta med sig bröd. En enda brödkaka var allt de hade med sig i båten.
15 Jesus varnade dem då och sa: ”Akta er noga för både fariseernas och Herodes surdeg.[c]”
16 De diskuterade med varandra om att de inte hade något bröd.
17 När Jesus märkte det sa han till dem: ”Varför diskuterar ni att ni inte har något bröd? Förstår ni fortfarande ingenting? Är era hjärtan så hårda? 18 Ni har ögon att se med och ser ändå ingenting, och öron att höra med och hör ändå ingenting. Kommer ni inte ihåg 19 att jag mättade mer än 5 000 personer med bara fem bröd? Hur många korgar med rester plockade ni upp den gången?”
”Tolv”, sa de.
20 ”Och när jag mättade mer än 4 000 personer med sju bröd, hur många korgar ni fick över då?”
”Sju”, svarade de.
21 Jesus sa: ”Förstår ni ännu inte?”
En blind man börjar se igen
22 När de kom över till Betsaida förde man fram en blind man till Jesus och bad att han skulle röra vid mannen. 23 Jesus tog då den blinde mannen vid handen och ledde honom ut ur byn. Sedan spottade han på hans ögon och lade sina händer på honom.
”Kan du se något?” frågade Jesus.
24 Mannen såg sig omkring. ”Ja”, sa han, ”jag ser människor. Men de ser ut som träd som går omkring.”
25 Då lade Jesus sina händer på mannens ögon en gång till. Och nu blev mannen helt botad och kunde se igen, och han såg allting klart och tydligt.
26 Jesus skickade sedan hem honom med uppmaningen: ”Gå inte ens in i byn.”
Petrus kallar Jesus för Messias
(Matt 16:13-16; 16:20; Luk 9:18-21)
27 Sedan gick Jesus och hans lärjungar till byarna kring Caesarea Filippi[d]. På vägen frågade han dem: ”Vem säger människorna att jag är?”
28 ”Somliga säger att du är Johannes döparen”, svarade de, ”några säger att du är Elia[e], och andra att du är någon av profeterna.”
29 Då frågade han dem: ”Vem säger ni att jag är?”
Petrus svarade: ”Du är Messias[f].” 30 Men Jesus förbjöd dem strängt att tala med någon om honom.
Jesus förutsäger för första gången att han ska dö
(Matt 16:21-23; Luk 9:22)
31 Efter det började Jesus undervisa sina lärjungar om att Människosonen måste lida mycket och bli förkastad av folkets ledare, av översteprästerna och de skriftlärda och dödas, men att han efter tre[g] dagar skulle uppstå från de döda. 32 Detta sa han helt öppet. Men Petrus drog honom åt sidan och började tillrättavisa honom.
33 Jesus vände sig då om och såg bort mot sina lärjungar och sa strängt till Petrus: ”Gå bort ifrån mig, Satan! Det du tänker är människotankar och kommer inte från Gud.”
Lärjungeskapets krav

34 Sedan kallade han till sig allt folket och sina lärjungar och sa till dem:
”Om någon vill följa mig, måste han förneka sig själv, ta sitt kors och följa mig. 35 Den som vill rädda sitt liv ska mista det, men den som mister sitt liv för min och evangeliets skull, ska rädda det. 36 Vad vinner en människa om hela världen blir hennes, om hon samtidigt mister sitt liv[h]? 37 Vad kan hjälpa henne att få det tillbaka? 38 Den som inför dessa trolösa och syndiga människor skäms för mig och för de ord jag talar, honom ska Människosonen skämmas för, när han återvänder i sin Faders härlighet tillsammans med de heliga änglarna.”
