6 耶穌離開那地方，來到自己的家鄉，他的門徒們也跟著他。 2 到了安息日，他開始在會堂裡教導人。許多人聽了就驚嘆不已，說：「這個人從哪裡得來這些呢？賜給這個人的到底是什麼樣的智慧？藉著他的手所行出來的到底是怎麼樣的神蹟？ 3 這不就是那木匠嗎？不就是瑪麗亞的兒子，雅各、約西、猶大和西門的哥哥[a]嗎？他的妹妹們[b]不也和我們在這裡嗎？」這樣，他們就對耶穌很反感[c]。
4 耶穌對他們說：「先知除了在本鄉、本族、本家以外，沒有不受尊重的。」 5 所以，耶穌無法在那裡行什麼神蹟，只是按手在幾個病人身上，使他們痊癒。 6 因為他們的不信，耶穌十分感慨。
差派十二使徒

施洗約翰之死
14 耶穌的名聲被傳揚出去，希律王也聽見了。有些人[g]說：「施洗者[h]約翰從死人中復活了，所以這些能力在他裡面做工。」 15 也有些人說：「他是以利亞。」還有些人說：「他是個先知，像古代[i]先知中的一位。」
16 但希律聽了卻說：「是被我砍了頭的約翰！這個人[j]復活了！」 17 原來，希律為了他弟弟[k]菲利普的妻子希羅迪婭的緣故，曾經派人去拘捕約翰，把他捆鎖在監獄裡。希律娶了這個女人， 18 而約翰一直對希律說：「你占有自己兄弟的妻子是不可以的。」 19 所以希羅迪婭對約翰懷恨在心，想要殺他，只是不能。 20 這是因為希律敬畏約翰，知道他是義人，是聖人，所以保護著他。希律聽約翰講說的時候，雖然心裡十分困惑[l]，還是樂意聽他的。

26 王就變得很憂愁，但因所起的誓，又因坐席的人，就不好拒絕她。 27 於是王立刻派了劊子手，命令把約翰的頭拿來。劊子手就去，在監獄裡砍下了約翰的頭， 28 把他的頭放在盤子上，端給女孩，女孩就把它交給了母親。 29 約翰的門徒們聽到了，就來把他的遺體領去，安放在墳墓裡。

30 使徒們聚集到耶穌那裡，把他們所做的和教導的一切告訴了他。 31 耶穌對他們說：「來，你們自己單獨到一個荒僻的地方休息一會兒吧。」這是因為來往的人多，他們連吃飯的時間也沒有。 32 於是他們悄悄地坐船出發，往一個荒僻的地方去。 33 可是眾人[p]看見他們離開了，並且有許多人認出他們[q]，就從各城鎮一起徒步趕往那裡，而且比他們先到了[r]。 34 耶穌下了船，看見一大群人，就對他們動了憐憫之心，因為他們像羊沒有牧人那樣。耶穌就開始教導他們很多事。

37 但耶穌回答他們，說：「你們給他們吃的吧。」
門徒們說：「要我們去買兩百個銀幣[t]的餅給他們吃嗎？」
38 耶穌問他們：「你們有多少餅呢？去看看。」
他們察看後，就說：「有五個，還有兩條魚。」
39 耶穌吩咐他們，叫眾人一組一組地坐在青草地上。 40 眾人就一群一群地坐了下來，有的一百人，有的五十人。 41 耶穌拿起這五個餅和兩條魚，抬頭望天，祝福了，然後把餅掰開，不斷遞給他的門徒們，讓他們分給眾人。他把兩條魚也分給大家。 42 大家都吃了，並且吃飽了。 43 他們把餅和魚的碎塊收拾起來，裝滿了十二個籃子。 44 吃餅的人，男人就有五千。
在水面上行走
45 耶穌隨即催促他的門徒們上船，要他們先往對岸的伯賽達去；這期間，他自己遣散了人群。 46 他告別了他們，就上山去禱告。 47 到了晚上，船在湖[u]中，只有耶穌一個人在岸上。 48 他看見門徒們由於逆風，划船非常艱苦。天快亮的時候[v]，耶穌在湖面上行走，向他們而去，想要從他們旁邊走過去。 49 門徒們看見耶穌在湖面上行走，以為是幽靈，於是喊叫起來， 50 因為他們都看見了他，就驚慌不安。耶穌立刻與他們講話，對他們說：「鼓起勇氣吧！是我，不要怕。」 51 接著，耶穌上了船和他們在一起。這時候風就停了。門徒們心裡感到極其驚訝[w]， 52 因為他們不領悟分[x]餅的事，他們還是硬著心。
在革尼撒勒治病
53 他們渡過去，到革尼撒勒上岸，把船拴好。 54 一下船，眾人就認出了耶穌。 55 人們跑遍那整個地區，聽到耶穌在哪裡，就把有病的人用墊子抬到哪裡。 56 無論耶穌進到哪裡，或村莊、或城鎮、或鄉下，人們就把病人放在街市上，懇求耶穌只要讓他們摸一下他的衣服穗子。凡是摸著的人，都得了救治。

Jesus Is Rejected at Nazareth.[a] 1 Departing from that district, Jesus went to his hometown accompanied by his disciples. 2 On the Sabbath, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many of those who heard him asked in amazement, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that he has been granted? What mighty deeds he performs! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother[b] of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not his sisters here with us?” And so they took offense at him.
4 Then Jesus said to them, “A prophet is always treated with honor except in his hometown, and among relatives, and in his own house.” 5 And he was unable to perform any mighty works there, aside from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Who Is Jesus?[c]
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve on Mission.[d] Jesus traveled through the villages teaching. 7 Calling the Twelve together, he began to send them out two by two, with authority over unclean spirits. 8 He instructed them to take nothing for their journey except a walking staff—no bread, no sack, no money in their purses. 9 They were to wear sandals but not to take along a second tunic.
10 He said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, you are to stay there until you leave the area. 11 And if any will not welcome you and refuse to listen to you, leave them immediately and shake off the dust that is on your feet in testimony against them.” 12 Then they set off and preached the need for repentance. 13 They cast out many demons, and they anointed with oil many people who were sick and cured them.[e]
14 The Name of Jesus Becomes Renowned.[f] King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become renowned, and some people were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why such powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said, “He is Elijah,” while still others proclaimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead.”
17 The Death of John the Baptist.[g] It was this same Herod who had ordered John to be arrested and put in chains in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. 18 For John had told Herod, “It is unlawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
19 As for Herodias, she was filled with resentment against John and wanted to have him killed, but she was unable to do so, 20 because Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a holy and righteous man. Therefore, he protected him from harm. When he heard John speak, he was greatly perplexed by his words, but even so he liked to listen to him.
21 Her opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his court officials and military officers and the leaders of Galilee. 22 When the daughter of Herodias came in, she performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he solemnly swore to her, “Whatever you ask I will give you, even half of my kingdom.”
24 The girl went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 The girl then hurried back to the king and made her request, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of the oath he had sworn and the presence of the guests, he was unwilling to break his word to her. 27 Therefore, he immediately ordered an executioner to bring him John’s head. The man went off and beheaded him in the prison. 28 Then he brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl in turn gave it to her mother. 29 When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and removed his body and laid it in a tomb.
30 The Return of the Twelve. The apostles[h] returned to Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, “Come away with me, by yourselves, to a deserted place and rest for a while.” For people continued to come and go in great numbers, and they had no time even to eat.
32 And so they went off by themselves in a boat to a deserted place. 33 Now many people saw them departing and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 34 As Jesus went ashore and beheld the vast crowd, he had compassion on them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
35 Jesus Feeds Five Thousand Men.[i] When it began to be late in the day, his disciples came up to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and it is getting very late. 36 Send the people away now so that they can go to the farms and villages in the area and buy something for themselves to eat.” 37 He replied, “Give them something to eat yourselves.” They said to him, “Are we to go and spend two hundred denarii[j] on bread for them to eat?” 38 He asked, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they found out, they reported: “Five loaves, and two fish.”
39 Then he ordered them to have all the people sit down on the green grass in groups. 40 They sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to distribute among the people. He also divided the two fish among them. 42 They all ate and were satisfied. 43 Then they gathered up the fragments of the bread and fish—twelve full baskets.[k] 44 Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.
45 Jesus Walks on the Water.[l] Immediately afterward, Jesus instructed his disciples to get into the boat and to go on ahead to Bethsaida on the other side of the lake while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And when he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
47 When evening came, the boat was far out on the water while he was alone on the shore. 48 He could see that the disciples were having difficulty in rowing the boat in the face of a headwind. Around the fourth watch of the night he came toward them, walking on the water. He was going to pass by them, 49 but when the disciples saw him walking on the water they thought it was a ghost and they cried out, 50 for they all had seen him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, “Have courage! It is I![m] Do not be afraid!” 51 Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were utterly astounded, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves. Their minds were closed.
53 Jesus Heals the Sick at Gennesaret.[n] After they had completed the crossing, they landed at Gennesaret and moored the boat. 54 When they disembarked, the people recognized Jesus immediately. 55 They rushed throughout the entire countryside, and began to bring the sick to him on pallets wherever they heard he was. 56 Everywhere he went, whether to village or town or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak. And all who touched it were completely healed.

- Mark 6:6 The very term “Messiah” is charged with too many facile hopes and misunderstandings, and Jesus avoids using it. If he reveals himself, it is through words and actions in the midst of events and encounters. The tragic end of John the Baptist prefigures his own destiny. Jesus bears witness to the goodness of God, shepherd of his people, and nourishes human beings with his word and his bread. His relationship with the disciples becomes closer and closer. Despite their failure to attain a full understanding of who he is, they are given the grace to recognize him as the Messiah.
- Mark 6:6 Jesus impresses on the disciples that the preaching of the Gospel demands a genuine and unconditional detachment from earthly things.
- Mark 6:13 At the time of Jesus, oil was frequently used to heal sickness. The anointing by the apostles set forth the healing power conferred on them by Jesus and prefigured the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
- Mark 6:14 Jesus’ name is known even in the palace of the tetrarch of Galilee: Antipas, a son of Herod the Great; out of habit, the people continue to call this Herod “king.”

- Mark 6:30 Apostles: this word occurs in Mark only here; it is also found in some manuscripts in Mk 3:14. The apostles were authorized representatives of Jesus, and in this sense it is used in the New Testament of the Twelve (Mk 3:14) and also of Paul (Rom 1:1). Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.

The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)

30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)
39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)
47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

John the Baptist Beheaded(S)
14 (T)Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore (U)these powers are at work in him.”
15 (V)Others said, “It is Elijah.”
And others said, “It is [c]the Prophet, (W)or like one of the prophets.”
16 (X)But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!” 17 For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. 18 Because John had said to Herod, (Y)“It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
19 Therefore Herodias [d]held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; 20 for Herod (Z)feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he [e]did many things, and heard him gladly.
21 (AA)Then an opportune day came when Herod (AB)on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. 22 And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 He also swore to her, (AC)“Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”
24 So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?”
And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”
25 Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 (AD)And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and (AE)took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
Feeding the Five Thousand(AF)
30 (AG)Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. 31 (AH)And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For (AI)there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 32 (AJ)So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.
33 But [f]the multitudes saw them departing, and many (AK)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. 34 (AL)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like (AM)sheep not having a shepherd. So (AN)He began to teach them many things. 35 (AO)When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves [g]bread; for they have nothing to eat.”
37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
And they said to Him, (AP)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”
38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”
And when they found out they said, (AQ)“Five, and two fish.”
39 Then He (AR)commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He (AS)looked up to heaven, (AT)blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were [h]about five thousand men.
Jesus Walks on the Sea(AU)
45 (AV)Immediately He [i]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He (AW)departed to the mountain to pray. 47 Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and (AX)would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a (AY)ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, (AZ)“Be[j] of good cheer! It is I; do not be (BA)afraid.” 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind (BB)ceased. And they were greatly (BC)amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For (BD)they had not understood about the loaves, because their (BE)heart was hardened.
Many Touch Him and Are Made Well(BF)
53 (BG)When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately [k]the people recognized Him, 55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that (BH)they might just touch the (BI)hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.
