謀害耶穌
14 再過兩天就是逾越節和除酵節，祭司長和律法教師正暗暗地找機會拘捕、殺害耶穌。
2 他們說：「我們不能在節期那天下手，以免在百姓中引起騷亂。」
耶穌受膏
3 耶穌在伯大尼村患過痲瘋病的西門家裡吃飯，有個女人帶了一瓶極貴重的純哪噠香膏進來，把玉瓶打破，將香膏倒在耶穌頭上。 4 有些人生氣地彼此議論說：「為什麼這樣浪費？ 5 這瓶香膏可以賣三百多個銀幣[a]來賙濟窮人。」他們就責備那女人。
6 耶穌說：「隨她吧！何必為難她呢？她在我身上做的是一件美事。 7 因為你們身邊總會有窮人，你們隨時都可以幫助他們，可是你們身邊不會總有我。 8 她做了自己能做的。她是為我的安葬做準備，提前用香膏抹了我的身體。 9 我實在告訴你們，無論福音傳到世界哪個角落，人們都會傳揚這女人的事蹟，紀念她。」
猶大出賣耶穌
10 十二門徒當中的加略人猶大去見祭司長，要把耶穌出賣給他們。 11 他們聽了喜出望外，答應給他酬金。於是猶大伺機出賣耶穌。
最後的晚餐
12 除酵節的第一天，就是宰殺逾越節羔羊的那天，門徒問耶穌：「我們該到什麼地方為你準備逾越節的晚餐呢？」
13 耶穌就派了兩個門徒，並囑咐他們：「你們進城會看到一個人帶著一瓶水迎面而來，你們就跟著他。 14 他進哪一家，你們也跟著進去，對那家的主人說，『我們的老師問你，祂的客房在哪裡，祂要和門徒在裡面吃逾越節的晚餐。』 15 主人會帶你們到樓上一間布置整齊的大房間，你們就在那裡準備吧。」
16 兩個門徒出去，進了城，所遇見的果然和耶穌所說的一樣。他們預備了逾越節的晚餐。
17 傍晚時分，耶穌帶著十二門徒來了。 18 用餐的時候，耶穌說：「我實在告訴你們，你們中間有一個人要出賣我，他現在正和我同桌吃飯。」
19 他們聽了都感到不安，一個一個地問耶穌：「不是我吧？」 20 耶穌說：「是你們十二個人中的一個，他現在正和我一起在盤子裡蘸餅吃。 21 人子一定會受害，正如聖經的記載，但出賣人子的人有禍了，他還不如不生在這世上！」
22 他們吃的時候，耶穌拿起餅來，祝謝後，便掰開，分給門徒，說：「拿去吃吧！這是我的身體。」 23 接著又拿起杯來，祝謝後，遞給他們，他們都喝了。 24 耶穌說：「這是我為萬人所流的立約之血。 25 我實在告訴你們，從今天起，一直到我在上帝的國喝新酒的那天之前，我不會再喝這葡萄酒。」
26 他們唱完詩歌，就出門去了橄欖山。
預言彼得不認主
27 耶穌對他們說：「你們都要背棄我，因為聖經上說，
『我要擊打牧人，
羊群將四散。』
28 但我復活後，要先你們一步去加利利。」
29 彼得說：「即使所有人都背棄你，我也決不會背棄你！」
30 耶穌說：「我實在告訴你，就在今天晚上雞叫兩次以前，你會三次不認我。」
31 彼得鄭重地說：「就算要我跟你一起死，我也不會不認你。」其他門徒也都這樣說。
客西馬尼園的禱告
32 他們到了客西馬尼園，耶穌對門徒說：「你們坐在這裡，我要去禱告。」
33 於是耶穌帶著彼得、雅各和約翰向前走。祂覺得極其難過，非常傷痛， 34 說：「我心裡非常憂傷，幾乎要死，你們留在這裡警醒。」 35 耶穌往前走了不遠，俯伏在地禱告，如果可以，不要讓那時刻臨到祂。
36 祂說：「阿爸，父啊，你無所不能，求你撤去此杯。然而，願你的旨意成就，而非我的意願。」
37 祂回來，見他們都睡著了，就對彼得說：「西門，你在睡覺嗎？你不能警醒一時嗎？ 38 你們要警醒禱告，免得陷入誘惑。你們的心靈雖然願意，肉體卻很軟弱。」
39 耶穌又去禱告，所祈求的跟上次一樣。 40 祂回來時見他們又睡著了，因為他們睏得眼皮發沉，也不知道對祂說什麼。 41 祂第三次禱告回來後，對他們說：「你們還在睡覺休息嗎？夠了，時候到了，看啊，人子要被出賣、交在罪人的手裡了。 42 起來，我們走吧。看啊，出賣我的人已經來了！」
耶穌被捕
43 耶穌還在說話的時候，十二門徒之一的猶大已帶了一群人拿著刀棍迎面而來。他們奉了祭司長、律法教師和長老之命來捉拿耶穌。 44 出賣耶穌的猶大預先和他們定了暗號，說：「我親吻誰，誰就是耶穌，你們把祂抓起來，小心押走。」
45 猶大隨即走到耶穌跟前說：「老師。」然後就親吻耶穌。 46 其他人就下手捉拿耶穌。 47 站在旁邊的一個門徒拔出刀朝大祭司的奴僕砍去，削掉了他一隻耳朵。
48 耶穌問那群人：「你們像對付強盜一樣拿著刀棍來抓我嗎？ 49 我天天和你們在一起，在聖殿裡教導人，你們沒有來抓我。你們現在這樣做是要應驗聖經的話。」
50 那時，門徒都撇下耶穌，各自逃命去了。 51 只有一個身上披著一塊麻布的青年跟著耶穌。他們上去捉他， 52 他丟了那塊麻布，赤身逃走了。
大祭司審問耶穌
53 他們把耶穌押到大祭司那裡，眾祭司長、長老和律法教師都來了。 54 那時彼得遠遠地跟著耶穌，一直來到大祭司的院子，與衛兵們坐在一起烤火。 55 祭司長和全公會的人正在尋找證據控告耶穌，要定祂死罪，只是找不到。 56 不少人作偽證控告祂，他們的證詞卻不一致。 57 後來，有幾個人站起來作偽證說： 58 「我們聽見祂說，『我要拆毀這座人手建造的聖殿，三天內不靠人力另造一座。』」 59 即使這樣，他們的證詞也不一致。
60 最後，大祭司在眾人面前站起來質問耶穌：「你不回答嗎？這些人作證控告你的是什麼呢？」
61 耶穌還是沉默不語，什麼也不答。大祭司又問祂：「你是那當受稱頌者的兒子基督嗎？」 62 耶穌說：「我是！將來你們要看見人子坐在全能上帝的右邊，駕著天上的雲降臨。」
63 大祭司便撕裂衣服，說：「我們還需要什麼證人呢？ 64 你們聽見祂說褻瀆的話了，你們看怎麼辦？」他們都判祂死罪。
65 有幾個人向祂吐唾沫，蒙上祂的眼睛，揮拳打祂，嘲笑祂說：「你說預言吧！」衛兵押祂下去時，也打祂。
彼得三次不認耶穌
66 那時，彼得仍在院子裡，大祭司的一個婢女走過來， 67 見彼得在烤火，打量了他一番，說：「你也是那個拿撒勒人耶穌的同夥。」
68 「我不知道也不明白你在說什麼！」彼得一邊否認，一邊躲到外院去。那時，雞叫了。
69 一會兒，那婢女又看見彼得，就對旁邊的人說：「他是跟他們一夥的！」 70 彼得又加以否認。
再過了一會兒，旁觀的人也指著彼得說：「你一定是跟他們一夥的，因為你也是加利利人！」
71 彼得又賭咒又發誓，說：「我根本不認識你們說的這個人。」 72 就在這時候，雞又叫了。彼得突然想起耶穌曾對他說：「在雞叫兩次以前，你會三次不認我」，忍不住痛哭起來。

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)(B)(C)
14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(M)(N)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)
24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(W)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(AC)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(AF) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[f] Father,”(AG) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(AH) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(AI)
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AJ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(AK)
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AM)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.

The Plot to Kill Jesus(A)
14 After (B)two days it was the Passover and (C)the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by [a]trickery and put Him to death. 2 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.”
The Anointing at Bethany(D)
3 (E)And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly [b]oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. 4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred (F)denarii and given to the poor.” And they (G)criticized[c] her sharply.
6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. 7 (H)For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; (I)but Me you do not have always. 8 She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. 9 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is (J)preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(K)
10 (L)Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.
Jesus Celebrates the Passover with His Disciples(M)
12 (N)Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they [d]killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”
13 And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14 Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 15 Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”
16 So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.
17 (O)In the evening He came with the twelve. 18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, (P)one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”
19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” [e]And another said, “Is it I?”
20 He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21 (Q)The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper(R)
22 (S)And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, [f]eat; this is My (T)body.”
23 Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the [g]new covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 (U)And when they had sung [h]a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(V)
27 (W)Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble [i]because of Me this night, for it is written:
(X)‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.’
28 “But (Y)after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”
29 (Z)Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to [j]stumble, yet I will not be.”
30 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
31 But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
And they all said likewise.
The Prayer in the Garden(AA)
32 (AB)Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And He (AC)took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34 Then He said to them, (AD)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”
35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, (AE)“Abba, Father, (AF)all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; (AG)nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38 (AH)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. (AI)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AL)
43 (AM)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I (AN)kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”
45 As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
46 Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48 (AO)Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple (AP)teaching, and you did not seize Me. But (AQ)the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50 (AR)Then they all forsook Him and fled.
A Young Man Flees Naked
51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(AS)
53 (AT)And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were (AU)assembled all the (AV)chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. 54 But (AW)Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.
55 (AX)Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56 For many bore (AY)false witness against Him, but their testimonies [k]did not agree.
57 Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, (AZ)‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” 59 But not even then did their testimony agree.
60 (BA)And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61 But (BB)He kept silent and answered nothing.
(BC)Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”
62 Jesus said, “I am. (BD)And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (BE)blasphemy! What do you think?”
And they all condemned Him to be deserving of (BF)death.
65 Then some began to (BG)spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers [l]struck Him with the palms of their hands.
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps(BH)
66 (BI)Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with (BJ)Jesus of Nazareth.”
68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.
69 (BK)And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70 But he denied it again.
(BL)And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; (BM)for you are a Galilean, [m]and your [n]speech shows it.”
71 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”
72 (BN)A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Chapter 14
The Plot against Jesus.[b] 1 It was now two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to arrest Jesus by deceit and put him to death. 2 They said, “It must not occur during the feast, or the people may begin to riot.”
A Woman of Bethany Anoints Jesus.[c] 3 When Jesus was in Bethany reclining at table in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, made of pure nard. She broke open the jar and poured the ointment over his head. 4 Some of those present said to one another indignantly, “Why was this ointment wasted in such a manner? 5 It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii,[d] with the money given to the poor.” And they began to rebuke her sharply.
6 However, Jesus said, “Let her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has performed a good action toward me. 7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish, but you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could. She has anointed my body to prepare for my burial. 9 Amen, I say to you, wherever in the whole world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”
10 Judas Betrays Jesus.[e] Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests and offered to hand him over to them. 11 They were delighted when they heard his proposal, and they promised to give him money. Then he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.
12 The Preparations for the Passover.[f] On the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, the disciples said to Jesus, “Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 He sent forth two of his disciples, instructing them: “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him! 14 Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: “Where is the room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?” ’ 15 Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there.” 16 The disciples went forth, entered the city, and found everything just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
17 The Treachery of Judas Foretold.[g] Now when evening came, he arrived with the Twelve. 18 And as they reclined at table and were eating, Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19 On hearing this they began to be distressed and to say to him, one after another, “Is it I?”
20 He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had never been born.”
22 The Last Supper.[h] While they were eating he took bread, and after he had pronounced the blessing, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and after offering thanks he gave it to them. After they all drank from it, 24 he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many. 25 Amen, I say to you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I shall drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”
26 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
27 Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial.[i] Then Jesus said to them, “You will all be scandalized, for it is written:
‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
28 But after I have been raised up, I shall go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 Peter said to him, “Even if all the others will be scandalized, I will never be.” 30 Jesus replied, “Amen, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But Peter insisted, “If I have to die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same thing.
32 The Agony in the Garden.[j] Then they went to a place that was called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took with him Peter and James and John, and he began to suffer distress and anguish. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful, even to the point of death. Remain here and keep watch.”
35 Moving on a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass him by, 36 saying, “Abba, Father, for you all things are possible. Take this cup from me. Yet not my will but yours be done.”
37 Returning to the disciples, he found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is indeed willing but the flesh is weak.”
39 Again, he went apart and prayed, saying the same words. 40 Then he came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to say to him. 41 When he returned a third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come when the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is approaching.”
43 Jesus Is Arrested.[k] At once, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him there was a crowd of men, armed with swords and clubs, who had been sent by the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now his betrayer had agreed with them on a signal, saying, “The one I shall kiss is the man. Arrest him, and lead him away under guard!” 45 And so, when he came, he proceeded directly to Jesus and said “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 Then they seized him and placed him under arrest. 47 Meanwhile, one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck a servant of the high priest, slicing off his ear.
48 Then Jesus said to them, “Why are you coming forth with swords and clubs to arrest me, as though I were a bandit? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But in this way the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. 51 [l]Among those who had followed Jesus was a young man wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, 52 but he slipped out of the linen cloth and ran off naked.
53 Jesus Is Condemned by the Sanhedrin.[m] They led Jesus away to the high priest, where the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were gathering. 54 Meanwhile, Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest, and he was sitting there with the attendants, warming himself at the fire.
55 The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin[n] tried to elicit testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they failed in their efforts. 56 Many witnesses offered perjured testimony against him, but their statements did not agree. 57 Then some stood up and gave this false witness against him: 58 “We heard this man say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands.’ ” 59 But even on this point their statements did not agree.
60 The high priest then rose among them and asked Jesus, “Have you no reply to counter the testimony that these witnesses have given?” 61 [o]But he remained silent and offered no response. Again, the high priest questioned him, asking, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”[p] 62 Jesus replied, “I am.
And you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power
and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63 Thereupon the high priest tore his garments and exclaimed, “What need do we have of any further witnesses! 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” They all condemned him as guilty and deserving of death. 65 Some of them began to spit at him. They blindfolded him and struck him, taunting him as they said, “Prophesy!” And the guards also slapped him.
66 Peter Denies Jesus.[q] While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the high priest’s servant girls came by. 67 When she noticed Peter warming himself, she stared at him and said, “You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” Thereupon he went forth into the outer courtyard. Then the cock crowed.[r] 69 The servant girl saw him and again began to say to the bystanders: “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it.
Shortly afterward, some bystanders said to Peter, “You are unquestionably one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 Then he began to shout curses, and he swore an oath: “I do not know this man you are talking about.” 72 At that very moment, a cock crowed for a second time, and Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

- Mark 14:1 The Passion Narrative that makes the deepest impression is perhaps that of Mark’s Gospel. The writer does not aim to move the reader, still less to satisfy our curiosity with edifying anecdotes and points of information. The description is vivid, unpolished, clear-cut. Mark piles up concrete, detailed incidents in order to highlight the tragic character of the struggle that Jesus is carrying on alone, isolated in his silence and humiliation. It is precisely in his abasement that Jesus shows himself to be the Messiah, the King of Israel, Son of God, and Savior of the world.
- Mark 14:1 We are at the religious high point of the year, the time of Passover, which is followed by the feast of Unleavened Bread, that is, an eight-day celebration during which only unleavened bread was eaten (see Deut 16:1-8; Ex 12:5-20).
- Mark 14:3 At this period the burial of the dead was regarded as an indispensable work of charity and of greater merit than almsgiving. In the present circumstances of Jesus, the woman’s gesture of respect becomes a sign of his imminent death. In addition, in Mark’s Gospel the ointment is poured on the head of Jesus, suggesting an act of consecration.

- Mark 14:22 Four accounts of the Lord’s Supper are found in the New Testament (Mt 26:26-28; Mk 14:22-24; Lk 22:19-20; and 1 Cor 11:23-25). Matthew and Mark are similar to one another while Luke and Paul are also similar to each other. All four accounts include (1) the taking of the bread; (2) the thanksgiving or blessing; (3) the breaking of the bread; (4) the saying, “This is my body”; (5) the taking of the cup; and (6) the explanation of the relation of blood to the Covenant. Only Luke and Paul record the command to continue to celebrate the Supper, “Do this in memory of me” (Lk 22:19; 1 Cor 11:24).
In giving his body and blood Jesus anticipates the action of his enemies, and his death becomes an offering to God, the sacrifice of the Servant who expiates the sin of the entire people (Isa 53). By this act he establishes the New Covenant; it inaugurates a new relationship between God and humanity. - Mark 14:27 Despite the protestations of the Twelve that they will never abandon him, Jesus predicts that they will do so. But he also reassures them that after his Resurrection he will see them again in Galilee (Mk 16:7; see Mt 26:32; 28:7, 10, 16; Jn 21) where he first called them (Mk 1:14-20).
