舌头最难制伏
3 我的弟兄们，不要多人做师傅，因为晓得我们要受更重的判断。 2 原来我们在许多事上都有过失。若有人在话语上没有过失，他就是完全人，也能勒住自己的全身。 3 我们若把嚼环放在马嘴里，叫它顺服，就能调动他的全身。 4 看哪，船只虽然甚大，又被大风催逼，只用小小的舵就随着掌舵的意思转动。 5 这样，舌头在百体里也是最小的，却能说大话。看哪，最小的火能点着最大的树林！ 6 舌头就是火，在我们百体中舌头是个罪恶的世界，能污秽全身，也能把生命的轮子点起来，并且是从地狱里点着的。 7 各类的走兽、飞禽、昆虫、水族本来都可以制伏，也已经被人制伏了； 8 唯独舌头，没有人能制伏，是不止息的恶物，满了害死人的毒气。 9 我们用舌头颂赞那为主、为父的，又用舌头咒诅那照着神形象被造的人。 10 颂赞和咒诅从一个口里出来，我的弟兄们，这是不应当的！ 11 泉源从一个眼里能发出甜苦两样的水吗？ 12 我的弟兄们，无花果树能生橄榄吗？葡萄树能结无花果吗？咸水里也不能发出甜水来。
论从上头来的智慧
13 你们中间谁是有智慧、有见识的呢？他就当在智慧的温柔上显出他的善行来。 14 你们心里若怀着苦毒的嫉妒和纷争，就不可自夸，也不可说谎话抵挡真道。 15 这样的智慧不是从上头来的，乃是属地的，属情欲的，属鬼魔的。 16 在何处有嫉妒、纷争，就在何处有扰乱和各样的坏事。 17 唯独从上头来的智慧，先是清洁，后是和平、温良、柔顺、满有怜悯、多结善果、没有偏见、没有假冒； 18 并且使人和平的，是用和平所栽种的义果。

邪惡的舌頭
3 我的弟兄姊妹，不要個個當教師，因為你們知道，我們為人師表的將受到更嚴格的評判， 2 因為我們在許多方面難免有過失。如果誰在言語上沒有過失，他就是純全的人，也能在各方面保持自制。 3 我們如果把嚼環放在馬嘴裡，便可以使牠順服，駕馭牠。 4 一艘大船在遭遇暴風吹襲時，船身雖然龐大，但舵手只要操縱一個小小的舵，就能隨意駕駛它。
5 同樣，人的舌頭雖然很小，卻能說誇大的話。
看啊，小火星能點燃大森林。 6 舌頭就是火，是我們身體上的一個充滿邪惡的世界，能玷污人的全身，足以毀掉人的一生，它是從地獄點燃的火。 7 自然界中的各類走獸、飛禽、爬蟲、水族都可以被馴服，也已經被人類馴服了， 8 但無人能馴服自己的舌頭，因為舌頭是個無法控制的邪惡之物，充滿了致命的毒氣。 9 我們用舌頭來讚美主和天父，也用舌頭來咒詛照著上帝的形像被造的人。 10 讚美和咒詛竟然從同一張嘴裡發出來。我的弟兄姊妹，這是不應該的！ 11 同一個泉源能湧出甜苦兩樣水嗎？ 12 我的弟兄姊妹，無花果樹能結出橄欖嗎？葡萄樹能結出無花果嗎？一個鹹水泉必流不出甜水來。
天上的智慧
13 你們當中誰是有智慧、有見識的呢？請他帶著來自智慧的謙和，在善行上表現出來。 14 但如果你們心懷苦毒的嫉妒和自私的野心，就不要自誇說有智慧，也不要違背真理去撒謊。 15 這種智慧並非來自天上，而是從世俗、私慾和魔鬼來的。 16 哪裡有嫉妒和自私的野心，哪裡就會有混亂和各樣的惡事。
17 但從天上來的智慧首先是純潔，然後是愛好和平、溫良柔順、充滿憐憫、多結善果、不存偏見、沒有虛偽。 18 使人和睦的人撒下和平的種子，必收穫仁義的果實。

Speak Wisely
3 Brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers. You know that we who teach will be judged more severely.
2 All of us make a lot of mistakes. If someone doesn’t make any mistakes when he speaks, he would be perfect. He would be able to control everything he does. 3 We put bits in the mouths of horses to make them obey us, and we have control over everything they do. 4 The same thing is true for ships. They are very big and are driven by strong winds. Yet, by using small rudders, pilots steer ships wherever they want them to go. 5 In the same way the tongue is a small part of the body, but it can brag about doing important things.
A large forest can be set on fire by a little flame. 6 The tongue is that kind of flame. It is a world of evil among the parts of our bodies, and it completely contaminates our bodies. The tongue sets our lives on fire, and is itself set on fire from hell. 7 People have tamed all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and sea creatures. 8 Yet, no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil filled with deadly poison.
9 With our tongues we praise our Lord and Father. Yet, with the same tongues we curse people, who were created in God’s likeness. 10 Praise and curses come from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, this should not happen! 11 Do clean and polluted water flow out of the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree produce olives? Can a grapevine produce figs? In the same way, a pool of salt water can’t produce fresh water.
Live Wisely
13 Do any of you have wisdom and insight? Show this by living the right way with the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you are bitterly jealous and filled with self-centered ambition, don’t brag. Don’t say that you are wise when it isn’t true. 15 That kind of wisdom doesn’t come from above. It belongs to this world. It is self-centered and demonic. 16 Wherever there is jealousy and rivalry, there is disorder and every kind of evil.
17 However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure. Then it is peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy and good deeds, impartial, and sincere. 18 A harvest that has God’s approval comes from the peace planted by peacemakers.

The Tongue Is a Fire
3 (A)Do not become teachers in large numbers, (B)my brothers, since you know that we who are teachers will incur a [a]stricter judgment. 2 For we all (C)stumble in many ways. (D)If anyone does not stumble in [b]what he says, he is a (E)perfect man, able to [c](F)rein in the whole body as well. 3 Now (G)if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their whole body as well. 4 Look at the ships too: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are nevertheless directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot determines. 5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it (H)boasts of great things.
(I)See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! 6 And (J)the tongue is a fire, the very world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set among [d]our body’s parts as that which (K)defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our [e]life, and is set on fire by [f](L)hell. 7 For every [g]species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human [h]race. 8 But no one among mankind can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil, full of (M)deadly poison. 9 With it we bless (N)our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people, (O)who have been made in the likeness of God; 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, these things should not be this way. 11 Does a spring send out from the same opening both [i]fresh and bitter water? 12 (P)Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, bear olives, or a vine bear figs? Nor can salt water produce [j]fresh.
Wisdom from Above
13 Who among you is wise and understanding? (Q)Let him show by his (R)good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter (S)jealousy and [k]selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against (T)the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down (U)from above, but is (V)earthly, [l](W)natural, (X)demonic. 16 For where (Y)jealousy and [m]selfish ambition exist, [n]there is disorder and every evil thing. 17 But the wisdom (Z)from above is first (AA)pure, then (AB)peace-loving, (AC)gentle, [o]reasonable, (AD)full of mercy and good fruits, [p](AE)impartial, free of (AF)hypocrisy. 18 And the (AG)fruit of righteousness is sown in peace [q]by those who make peace.
