1 1-2 提阿非羅大人，已經有很多人根據最初的目擊者和傳道者給我們的口述，把我們中間發生的事記載下來。 3 我把一切事情從頭至尾仔細查考之後，決定按次序寫出來， 4 使你知道自己所學的道都是有真憑實據的。
天使預告施洗者約翰出生
5 猶太王希律執政期間，亞比雅的班裡有位祭司名叫撒迦利亞，他妻子伊莉莎白是亞倫的後裔。 6 夫妻二人遵行主的一切誡命和條例，無可指責，在上帝眼中是義人。 7 但他們沒有孩子，因為伊莉莎白不能生育，二人又年紀老邁。
8 有一天，輪到撒迦利亞他們那一班祭司當值， 9 他們按照祭司的規矩抽籤，抽中撒迦利亞到主的殿裡去燒香。 10 眾百姓都在外面禱告。 11 那時，主的天使在香壇的右邊向撒迦利亞顯現， 12 撒迦利亞見了，驚慌害怕起來。
13 天使對他說：「撒迦利亞，不要害怕，你的禱告已蒙垂聽。你的妻子伊莉莎白要為你生一個兒子，你要給他取名叫約翰。 14 你必歡喜快樂，許多人也會因為他的誕生而欣喜雀躍， 15 因為他將成為主偉大的僕人。他必滴酒不沾，並且在母腹裡就被聖靈充滿。 16 他將勸導許多以色列人回心轉意，歸順主——他們的上帝。 17 他將以先知以利亞的心志和能力作主的先鋒，使父親的心轉向兒女，使叛逆的人回轉、順從義人的智慧，為主預備合用的子民。」
18 撒迦利亞對天使說：「我已經老了，我的妻子也上了年紀，我如何知道這是真的呢？」 19 天使回答說：「我是侍立在上帝面前的加百列，奉命來向你報這喜訊。 20 我說的這些話到時候必定應驗。但因為你不肯相信我的話，所以這事成就以前，你將變成啞巴，不能說話。」
21 人們在等候撒加利亞，見他在聖殿裡遲遲不出來，都感到奇怪。 22 後來他出來了，卻成了啞巴，不能說話，只能打手勢，大家意識到他在聖殿裡看見了異象。 23 撒迦利亞供職期滿，就回家去了。 24 不久，伊莉莎白果然懷了孕，她有五個月閉門不出。 25 她說：「主真是眷顧我，除掉了我不生育的羞恥。」
天使預告耶穌降生
26 伊莉莎白懷孕六個月的時候，天使加百列又奉上帝的命令到加利利的拿撒勒， 27 去見一位童貞女，她叫瑪麗亞。瑪麗亞已經和大衛的後裔約瑟訂了婚。
28 天使到了瑪麗亞那裡，說：「恭喜你！蒙大恩的女子，主與你同在！」
29 瑪麗亞聽了覺得十分困惑，反覆思想這話的意思。
30 天使對她說：「瑪麗亞，不要害怕，你在上帝面前已經蒙恩了。 31 你要懷孕生子，並給祂取名叫耶穌。 32 祂偉大無比，將被稱為至高者的兒子，主上帝要把祂祖先大衛的王位賜給祂。 33 祂要永遠統治以色列[a]，祂的國度永無窮盡。」
34 瑪麗亞對天使說：「這怎麼可能呢？我還是童貞女。」
35 天使回答說：「聖靈要臨到你身上，至高者的能力要蔭庇你，所以你要生的那聖嬰必稱為上帝的兒子。 36 看啊，你的親戚伊莉莎白年紀老邁，一向不能生育，現在已經懷男胎六個月了。 37 因為上帝無所不能。」
38 瑪麗亞說：「我是主的婢女，願你所說的話在我身上成就。」於是天使離開了她。
瑪麗亞看望伊莉莎白
39 不久，瑪麗亞便動身趕到猶太山區的一座城， 40 進了撒迦利亞的家，向伊莉莎白請安。 41 伊莉莎白一聽見瑪麗亞的問安，腹中的胎兒便跳動起來，伊莉莎白被聖靈充滿， 42 高聲喊著說：「在婦女中你是最蒙福的！你腹中的孩子也是蒙福的！ 43 我主的母親來探望我，我怎麼敢當呢？ 44 我一聽到你問安的聲音，腹中的孩子就歡喜跳動。 45 相信主所說的話必實現的女子有福了！」
46 瑪麗亞說：
「我的心尊主為大，
47 我的靈因我的救主上帝而歡喜，
48 因祂眷顧我這卑微的婢女，
從今以後，
世世代代都要稱我是有福的。
49 全能者在我身上行了奇事，
祂的名是神聖的。
50 祂憐憫敬畏祂的人，
直到世世代代。
51 祂伸出臂膀，施展大能，
驅散心驕氣傲的人。
52 祂使當權者失勢，
叫謙卑的人升高。
53 祂使饑餓的得飽足，
叫富足的空手而去。
54 祂扶助了自己的僕人以色列，
55 祂要施憐憫給亞伯拉罕和他的子孫，
直到永遠，
正如祂對我們祖先的應許。」
56 瑪麗亞和伊莉莎白同住了約三個月，便回家去了。
施洗者約翰出生
57 伊莉莎白的產期到了，生下一個兒子。 58 親戚和鄰居聽見主向她大施憐憫，都和她一同歡樂。 59 到了第八天，他們來給孩子行割禮，想照他父親的名字給他取名叫撒迦利亞。
60 但伊莉莎白說：「不！要叫他約翰。」
61 他們說：「你們家族中沒有人用這個名字啊！」 62 他們便向他父親打手勢，問他要給孩子起什麼名字。 63 撒迦利亞就要了一塊寫字板，寫上：「他的名字叫約翰。」大家看了都很驚奇。 64 就在那時，撒迦利亞恢複了說話的能力，便開口讚美上帝。 65 住在周圍的人都很懼怕，這消息很快就傳遍了整個猶太山區。 66 聽見的人都在想：「這孩子將來會怎樣呢？因為主與他同在。」
撒迦利亞的預言
67 孩子的父親撒迦利亞被聖靈充滿，便預言說：
68 「主——以色列的上帝當受稱頌，
因祂眷顧、救贖了自己的子民，
69 在祂僕人大衛的家族中為我們興起了一位大能的拯救者[b]，
70 正如祂從亙古藉著祂聖先知們的口所說的。
71 祂要從仇敵和一切恨我們之人手中拯救我們。
72 祂憐憫我們的祖先，
持守自己的聖約，
73 就是祂對我們的先祖亞伯拉罕所起的誓，
74 要把我們從仇敵手中拯救出來，
75 使我們一生一世在聖潔和公義中坦然無懼地事奉祂。
76 至於你，我的兒子啊！
你將要被稱為至高者的先知，
因為你要走在主的前面，
為祂預備道路，
77 使百姓因罪得赦免而明白救恩的真諦。
78 由於上帝的憐憫，
清晨的曙光必從高天普照我們，
79 照亮那些生活在黑暗中和死亡陰影下的人，
帶領我們走平安的道路。」
80 那孩子漸漸長大，心靈強健，在向以色列人公開露面之前，一直住在曠野。
耶穌降生伯利恆
2 那時，凱撒奧古斯都頒下諭旨，命羅馬帝國的人民都辦理戶口登記。 2 這是第一次戶口登記，正值居里紐任敘利亞總督。 3 大家都回到本鄉辦理戶口登記。 4 約瑟因為是大衛家族的人，就從加利利的拿撒勒鎮趕到猶太地區大衛的故鄉伯利恆， 5 要和已許配給他、懷著身孕的瑪麗亞一起登記。 6 他們抵達目的地時，瑪麗亞產期到了， 7 便生下第一胎，是個兒子。她用布把孩子裹好，安放在馬槽裡，因為旅店沒有房間了。
牧羊人和天使
8 當晚，伯利恆郊外有一群牧羊人正在看守羊群。 9 忽然，主的天使向他們顯現，主的榮光四面照著他們，他們非常害怕。 10 天使對他們說：「不要怕！我告訴你們一個有關萬民的大喜訊， 11 今天在大衛的城裡有一位救主為你們降生了，祂就是主基督！ 12 你們將看見一個嬰孩包著布躺在馬槽裡，這就是給你們的記號。」
13 忽然，有一大隊天軍出現，與那天使一同讚美上帝說：
14 「在至高之處，
願榮耀歸於上帝！
在地上，
願平安臨到祂所喜悅的人！」
15 眾天使離開他們升回天上之後，牧羊人便商議說：「我們現在去伯利恆，察看一下主剛才告訴我們的那件事吧！」 16 他們就連忙進城，找到了瑪麗亞和約瑟以及躺在馬槽裡的嬰孩。 17 他們看過之後，就把天使告訴他們有關這嬰孩的事傳開了。 18 聽見的人都對牧羊人的話感到驚訝。
19 但瑪麗亞把這些事牢記在心裡，反覆思想。 20 牧羊人在歸途中不斷地將榮耀歸於上帝，讚美祂，因為他們的所見所聞跟天使告訴他們的一樣。
奉獻聖嬰
21 在第八天，嬰孩接受了割禮，祂的名字叫耶穌，是瑪麗亞懷孕前天使取的。
22 摩西律法規定的潔淨期滿後，約瑟和瑪麗亞把嬰孩帶到耶路撒冷去獻給主， 23 因為主的律法規定：必須把長子分別出來獻給主。 24 他們又按照主的律法獻上祭物，即一對斑鳩或兩隻雛鴿。 25 耶路撒冷有一位公義敬虔、有聖靈同在的人名叫希緬，他一直期待著以色列的安慰者到來。 26 聖靈曾啟示他：他去世前必能親眼看見主所立的基督。
27 一天，他受聖靈感動進入聖殿，看見約瑟和瑪麗亞抱著嬰孩耶穌進來，要依照律法的規定為祂行奉獻禮， 28 就把祂抱過來，稱頌上帝說：
29 「主啊，現在你的話已經成就，
可以讓你的奴僕安然離世了，
30 因為我已親眼看到你的救恩，
31 就是你為萬民所預備的救恩。
32 這救恩是啟示外族人的光，
也是你以色列子民的榮耀。」
33 約瑟和瑪麗亞聽見這番話，感到驚奇。 34 希緬給他們祝福後，就對孩子的母親瑪麗亞說：「看啊，這孩子必使以色列許多人跌倒、許多人興起。祂將成為眾人攻擊的對象， 35 好叫許多人的心思意念暴露出來，你自己則會心如刀割。」
36-37 亞設支派中有一位八十四歲高齡的女先知名叫亞拿，是法內利的女兒，婚後七年便開始守寡，之後一直住在聖殿裡，禁食禱告，日夜事奉上帝。 38 正在那時，她也前來感謝上帝，並把耶穌的事報告給所有盼望耶路撒冷蒙救贖的人。
39 約瑟和瑪麗亞辦完了主的律法規定的一切事之後，就回到他們的家鄉——加利利的拿撒勒。 40 耶穌漸漸長大，身心強健，充滿智慧，上帝的恩典與祂同在。
少年耶穌聖殿論道
41 約瑟和瑪麗亞每年都上耶路撒冷去過逾越節。 42 耶穌十二歲那年，跟父母照例上去過節。 43 節期完了，約瑟和瑪麗亞便啟程回家，他們並不知道少年耶穌仍然留在耶路撒冷， 44 還以為祂跟在同行的人中間。他們走了一天的路後，才開始在親戚朋友中找祂， 45 結果沒有找到，只好回到耶路撒冷。 46 三天後，他們才在聖殿裡找到耶穌，祂正和教師們坐在一起，一邊聽一邊問問題。 47 祂的知識和對答令聽見的人感到驚奇。 48 約瑟和瑪麗亞看見耶穌在那裡，大為驚奇。
瑪麗亞對祂說：「兒子，你為什麼這樣對我們呢？你父親和我急得到處找你！」
49 耶穌對他們說：「你們為什麼找我呢？難道你們不知道我應該在我父的家嗎？」 50 但他們不明白祂在講什麼。
51 於是，耶穌隨父母回到拿撒勒，並順從他們。瑪麗亞把這一切事牢記在心。 52 耶穌漸漸長大，智慧與日俱增，越來越受上帝和人們的喜愛。
施洗者約翰的傳道
3 凱撒提庇留執政第十五年，本丟·彼拉多任猶太總督，希律做加利利的分封王，他的弟弟腓力做以土利亞和特拉可尼兩地的分封王，呂撒聶做亞比利尼的分封王， 2 亞那和該亞法當大祭司。當時，撒迦利亞的兒子約翰住在曠野，上帝向他說話。 3 他就到約旦河附近宣講悔改的洗禮，使人的罪得到赦免。 4 這正應驗了以賽亞先知書上的話：「在曠野有人大聲呼喊，
『預備主的道，
修直祂的路。
5 一切山谷將被填滿，
大山小丘將被削平，
彎曲的道路要被修直，
崎嶇的路徑要被鋪平。
6 世人都要看見上帝的救恩。』」
7 約翰對前來接受他洗禮的人群說：「你們這些毒蛇的後代！誰指示你們逃避那將臨的烈怒呢？ 8 你們要結出與悔改相稱的果子。不要心裡說，『我們是亞伯拉罕的子孫。』我告訴你們，上帝可以從這些石頭中興起亞伯拉罕的子孫。 9 現在斧頭已經放在樹根上了，不結好果子的樹都要被砍下丟在火裡。」
10 眾人問道：「那麼，我們該怎麼辦呢？」
11 約翰回答說：「有兩件衣服的，應當分一件給沒有的；食物充裕的，應當分些給饑餓的。」
12 有些稅吏也來受洗，並問約翰：「老師，我們該怎麼辦呢？」
13 約翰說：「除了規定的稅以外，一分錢也不可多收。」
14 有些軍人問：「我們該怎麼辦呢？」約翰說：「不可敲詐勒索，自己有糧餉就當知足。」
15 當時的百姓正期待著基督的來臨，大家心裡都在猜想，也許約翰就是基督。 16 約翰對眾人說：「我是用水給你們施洗，但有一位能力比我更大的快來了，我就是給祂解鞋帶也不配。祂要用聖靈和火給你們施洗。 17 祂手裡拿著簸箕，要清理祂的麥場，把麥子收進倉庫，用不滅的火燒盡糠秕。」 18 約翰向眾人傳福音，講了許多勸勉的話。
19 分封王希律娶了自己弟弟的妻子希羅底，又做了許多惡事，因而受到約翰的指責， 20 可是他卻惡上加惡，將約翰關進監牢裡。
耶穌受洗
21 眾人都受了洗，耶穌也接受了洗禮。祂正在禱告的時候，天開了， 22 聖靈像鴿子一樣降在祂身上，又有聲音從天上傳來：「你是我的愛子，我甚喜悅你。」
耶穌的家譜
23 耶穌開始傳道的時候，年紀約三十歲，照人的看法，
祂是約瑟的兒子，
約瑟是希里的兒子，
24 希里是瑪塔的兒子，
瑪塔是利未的兒子，
利未是麥基的兒子，
麥基是雅拿的兒子，
雅拿是約瑟的兒子，
25 約瑟是瑪他提亞的兒子，
瑪他提亞是亞摩斯的兒子，
亞摩斯是拿鴻的兒子，
拿鴻是以斯利的兒子，
以斯利是拿該的兒子，
26 拿該是瑪押的兒子，
瑪押是瑪他提亞的兒子，
瑪他提亞是西美的兒子，

耶穌受試探
4 耶穌被聖靈充滿，從約旦河回來後，隨聖靈的引導來到曠野， 2 在那裡受魔鬼的試探四十天。那些日子耶穌什麼也沒吃。那段日子過後，祂餓了。 3 魔鬼對祂說：「如果你是上帝的兒子，可以把這塊石頭變成食物來吃啊。」
4 耶穌回答說：「聖經上說，『人活著不是單靠食物。』」
5 魔鬼又帶祂上到高處，頃刻間把天下萬國展示給祂看， 6 又說：「我要把這一切權勢和榮耀都給你，因為這一切全交給我了，我想給誰就給誰。 7 所以如果你向我下拜，這一切就是你的了。」
8 耶穌回答說：「聖經上說，『要敬拜主——你的上帝，單單事奉祂。』」
9 魔鬼又帶耶穌到耶路撒冷，讓祂站在聖殿的最高處，說：「如果你是上帝的兒子，就從這裡跳下去吧， 10 因為聖經上說，『上帝會吩咐祂的天使保護你， 11 他們會用手托住你，不讓你的腳碰在石頭上。』」
12 耶穌回答說：「聖經上說，『不可試探主——你的上帝。』」
13 魔鬼用盡各樣的試探後，暫時離開了耶穌。
拿撒勒人厭棄耶穌
14 耶穌帶著聖靈的能力回到加利利，祂的名聲傳遍了周圍地區。 15 祂在各會堂裡教導人，大家都稱讚祂。
16 祂來到自己長大的地方拿撒勒，照常在安息日進會堂，並站起來誦讀聖經。 17 有人把以賽亞先知書遞給祂，祂打開書卷，找到這樣一段經文：
18 「主的靈在我身上，
因為祂膏立了我，
讓我傳福音給貧窮的人，
差遣我宣告被擄的人得釋放、
瞎眼的人得見光明、
受欺壓的人得自由，
19 又宣告上帝悅納人的恩年已經來臨。」
20 耶穌讀完便收好書卷，還給負責的人，然後坐下。會堂裡的人都把目光集中在祂身上。
21 祂就對他們說：「你們剛才聽見的這段經文今天已經應驗了。」
22 大家都稱讚祂，聽見祂那些充滿恩典的話，都感到驚奇，就說：「這不是約瑟的兒子嗎？」
23 耶穌對他們說：「你們肯定會把這句俗話用在我身上，說，『醫生啊，治好你自己吧！你在迦百農所行的一切，我們都聽說了，也在你家鄉行給我們看吧！』 24 可是我實在告訴你們，先知在自己的家鄉都是不受歡迎的。 25 事實上，在以利亞先知的時代，天乾旱無雨達三年半之久，遍地有大饑荒。那時，以色列國有許多寡婦， 26 但以利亞並沒有奉命去幫助她們任何人，只奉命去幫助住在西頓地區撒勒法的一個寡婦。 27 在以利沙先知的時代，以色列國有許多患痲瘋病的人，但沒有一個人得到醫治，反而敘利亞的乃縵得到了醫治。」
28 會堂裡的人聽了這些話都怒火中燒， 29 就起來把耶穌趕出城外，帶到懸崖邊，要把祂推下去。他們的城就坐落在山上。 30 耶穌卻從他們中間穿過，離開了那裡。
加利利趕鬼醫病
31 耶穌下到加利利的迦百農鎮，在安息日教導眾人。 32 聽眾對祂的教導感到驚奇，因為祂的話裡充滿權柄。
33 在會堂裡有一個被污鬼附身的人高聲喊叫： 34 「唉！拿撒勒的耶穌啊，我們和你有什麼關係？你是來毀滅我們嗎？我知道你是誰，你是上帝的聖者！」
35 耶穌責備牠說：「住口！從他身上出來！」污鬼當場把那人摔倒，然後從他身上離開了，絲毫沒有傷害他。
36 大家都很驚訝，彼此議論說：「這是怎麼回事？祂的話竟然帶著權柄和能力，一吩咐污鬼，牠們就出來了！」
37 耶穌的名聲傳遍了周圍地區。
耶穌醫治許多人
38 祂離開會堂，到了西門的家。那時，西門的岳母正在發高燒，眾人就求耶穌醫治她。
39 耶穌站在她旁邊，斥責熱病，熱病就退了，她便立刻起來服侍他們。
40 到了黃昏，人們把患各種疾病的人帶到耶穌面前。耶穌把手按在病人身上，一一治好他們， 41 並趕出許多附在人身上的鬼。那些鬼喊叫著：「你是上帝的兒子！」耶穌卻斥責牠們，不許牠們說話，因為牠們知道祂是基督。
42 黎明時，耶穌退到一處僻靜的地方。眾人四處找祂，找到後想留住祂，不讓祂離開。 43 但耶穌對他們說：「我必須把上帝國的福音傳到其他的城鎮去，因為我是為此而被差來的。」 44 於是耶穌繼續在加利利[c]各會堂裡傳道。
呼召門徒
5 一天，耶穌站在革尼撒勒湖邊，眾人團團圍著祂，要聽上帝的道。 2 祂看見湖邊停著兩條船，漁夫離了船正在洗網， 3 就上了西門的那條船，請西門把船稍微划離岸邊，然後坐在船上教導眾人。 4 耶穌講完之後對西門說：「把船划到水深的地方去撒網捕魚。」
5 西門說：「老師，我們勞碌了一整夜，一無所獲，但既然你這樣吩咐，我就照你的話做。」 6 他們把網撒下去，果然捕獲很多魚，差點把網撐破了， 7 於是招呼另一條船上的同伴來幫忙。他們一起把兩條船都裝滿了魚，船幾乎要沉下去了。
8 西門·彼得見狀，便跪倒在耶穌膝前說：「主啊，離開我，我是個罪人！」 9 他和所有同伴們對捕到這麼多魚感到非常驚訝， 10 包括西庇太的兩個兒子雅各和約翰。耶穌對西門說：「不要怕，從今以後，你將成為得人的漁夫。」 11 於是他們把船靠岸後，撇下一切跟從了耶穌。
潔淨痲瘋病人
12 有一次，耶穌在一個小鎮遇見一個渾身患痲瘋病的人，那人一看見耶穌，就俯伏在地上懇求說：「主啊，如果你肯，一定能使我潔淨。」
13 耶穌伸手摸他，說：「我肯，你潔淨了吧！」他身上的痲瘋病立刻消失了。
14 耶穌又囑咐他：「不要把這事告訴別人，要去讓祭司察看你的身體，照摩西的規定獻上祭物，向眾人證明你已經潔淨了。」
15 結果耶穌的名聲傳得更廣了，成群的人聚集到祂那裡聽祂講道、求祂醫病。 16 不過，祂還是常常退到曠野去禱告。
叫癱子行走
17 有一天，耶穌在教導人，旁邊坐著來自加利利、猶太和耶路撒冷各地的法利賽人和律法教師，主的能力伴隨著耶穌，使祂能醫治病人。
18 有人用擔架抬著一個癱瘓的人想進到屋裡，把他放在耶穌面前。 19 可是人太擠了，無法進去，他們就爬上屋頂，掀開瓦片，把那病人連人帶擔架縋到耶穌面前。 20 耶穌看見他們那麼有信心，就對癱子說：「朋友，你的罪得到赦免了！」
21 那些法利賽人和律法教師開始議論起來：「這個說話褻瀆上帝的人是誰啊？除了上帝以外，誰能夠赦罪？」
22 耶穌知道他們的想法，就問：「你們為什麼心裡議論呢？ 23 說『你的罪得到赦免了』容易呢，還是說『你起來行走』容易呢？ 24 如今我要讓你們知道人子在世上有赦罪的權柄。」於是對癱子說：「我吩咐你起來！收拾你的擔架回家去吧。」
25 那人立刻當眾站了起來，拿起他躺臥的擔架回家去了，不住地讚美上帝。 26 眾人都十分驚奇，一同讚美上帝，心裡充滿了敬畏，說：「今天我們看到神蹟了！」
呼召利未
27 後來耶穌外出時，看見一個名叫利未的稅吏坐在收稅站裡，就對他說：「跟從我！」 28 利未就起來，撇下一切跟從了耶穌。
29 隨後，他在家設宴款待耶穌，赴宴的人中有許多稅吏和其他人。 30 法利賽人和律法教師就向耶穌的門徒抱怨說：「你們為什麼跟稅吏和罪人一起吃喝呢？」
31 耶穌答道：「健康的人不需要醫生，有病的人才需要。 32 我來不是要召義人悔改，乃是召罪人悔改。」
論禁食
33 他們說：「約翰的門徒常常禁食禱告，法利賽人的門徒也是一樣，可是你的門徒卻又吃又喝。」
34 耶穌說：「新郎還跟賓客在一起的時候，豈能讓賓客禁食？ 35 但有一天新郎將被帶走，那時他們就要禁食了。」 36 耶穌又給他們講了一個比喻，說：「沒有人會從新衣服上撕下一塊布來，補在舊衣服上。否則，不但新衣服撕破了，舊衣服和新補丁也不相稱。 37 同樣，沒有人把新酒裝進舊皮囊裡，否則新酒會把舊皮囊漲破，酒也漏了，皮囊也毀了。 38 所以新酒一定要裝在新皮囊裡。 39 但是，沒有人喝過陳年老酒後，還願意喝新酒，因為他會說，『還是陳年老酒好。』」
安息日的主
6 有一個安息日，耶穌和門徒走過一片麥田，門徒隨手摘下一些麥穗搓了吃。 2 有些法利賽人說：「你們為什麼做在安息日不准做的事？」
3 耶穌答道：「你們沒有讀過大衛的事嗎？有一天，大衛和他的部下餓了， 4 他進入上帝的殿，拿了獻給上帝的供餅。這餅只有祭司才可以吃，大衛不但自己吃了，還分給他的部下吃。」 5 耶穌又對他們說：「人子是安息日的主。」
6 又有一個安息日，耶穌進入會堂教導人，座中有一個右手萎縮的人。 7 律法教師和法利賽人密切地監視耶穌，看祂會不會在安息日醫治病人，好找個藉口控告祂。 8 耶穌知道他們的心思，就對那個右手萎縮的人說：「起來，站在大家面前！」那人就起來站在那裡。
9 耶穌問眾人：「我問你們，在安息日應該行善呢，還是作惡呢？救人呢，還是害人呢？」 10 祂環視眾人，然後對那人說：「把手伸出來！」那人的手一伸就復原了。
11 但法利賽人和律法教師卻怒火中燒，開始商議對付耶穌的辦法。
揀選十二使徒
12 一天，耶穌到山上整夜向上帝禱告。 13 天明時分，祂召集門徒，從中選出十二人立為使徒。 14 他們是：西門——耶穌給他取名叫彼得、西門的兄弟安得烈、雅各、約翰、腓力、巴多羅買、 15 馬太、多馬、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、激進黨人[d]西門、 16 雅各的兒子猶大和出賣耶穌的加略人猶大。
17 耶穌和他們下了山，站在一處平地上，身邊有一大群門徒，還有大批從猶太、耶路撒冷以及泰爾和西頓沿海地區來的人，要聽祂講道，盼望祂醫治他們的疾病。 18 那些被污鬼纏身的人也得到了祂的醫治。 19 大家都想去摸祂，因為有能力從祂身上發出來，可以治好人們的疾病。
論四福
20 耶穌抬頭望著門徒，對他們說：
「貧窮的人有福了，
因為上帝的國屬於你們！
21 現在饑餓的人有福了，
因為你們將得飽足！
現在哀哭的人有福了，
因為你們將要歡笑！
22 你們為人子的緣故而遭人憎恨、棄絕、侮辱、毀謗，就有福了！ 23 那時你們要歡喜雀躍，因為你們在天上有大賞賜！他們的祖先也曾這樣惡待以前的先知。
論四禍
24 「富有的人有禍了，
因為你們已經享盡了人世間的安逸！
25 現在飽足的人有禍了，
因為你們將要挨餓！
現在歡笑的人有禍了，
因為你們將要哀哭！
26 人人都誇讚你們的時候，
你們就有禍了，
因為他們的祖先也是這樣誇讚假先知！
論愛仇敵
27 「但是，我告訴你們這些聽道的人，要愛你們的仇敵，要善待恨你們的人， 28 要為咒詛你們的人祝福，要替惡待你們的人禱告。 29 如果有人打你一邊的臉，連另一邊也轉過來讓他打。如果有人奪你的外衣，連內衣也由他拿去。 30 有人向你求什麼，就給他；有人拿了你的東西，不要追討。 31 你們想要別人怎樣對待你們，你們就要怎樣對待別人。 32 如果你們只愛那些愛你們的人，有什麼功勞呢？就是罪人也會這樣做。 33 如果你們只善待那些善待你們的人，有什麼功勞呢？就是罪人也會這樣做。 34 如果你們借錢給人，指望收回，有什麼功勞呢？即使罪人也會借貸給罪人，日後再如數收回。
35 「然而，要愛你們的仇敵，善待他們；無論借出什麼，都不要指望歸還。這樣，你們將有大賞賜，並且將成為至高者的兒子，因為祂以恩慈待那些忘恩負義和作惡的人。 36 你們要憐憫人，像你們的天父憐憫人一樣。
責人先責己
37 「不要論斷人，免得你們被人論斷；不要定人的罪，免得自己也被定罪。要饒恕人，這樣你們也必蒙饒恕。 38 你們要給他人，這樣上帝必給你們，並且會用大號升斗搖勻壓實，滿滿地倒給你們，因為你們用什麼樣的量器量給別人，上帝也會用什麼樣的量器量給你們。」
39 耶穌又給他們講了個比喻，說：「瞎子豈能給瞎子帶路？二人豈不是要雙雙掉進坑裡嗎？ 40 學生不會高過老師，學成之後不過像老師一樣。 41 為什麼你只看見你弟兄眼中的小刺，卻看不見自己眼中的大樑呢？ 42 你既看不見自己眼中的大樑，又怎能對弟兄說『讓我除去你眼中的小刺』呢？你這偽君子啊！要先除掉自己眼中的大樑，才能看得清楚，以便清除弟兄眼中的小刺。
樹和果子
43 「好樹不結壞果子，壞樹也結不出好果子。 44 樹的好壞從果子就可以分辨出來。人不會從荊棘中採集無花果，也不會在蒺藜上摘取葡萄。 45 善人心存良善，就從他裡面發出良善；惡人心存邪惡，就從他裡面發出邪惡。因為心裡充滿的，口裡自然會說出來。
兩種蓋房子的人
46 「你們為什麼『主啊，主啊』地稱呼我，卻不遵行我的話呢？ 47 我要告訴你們那到我這裡來，聽了我的話又去遵行的人是什麼樣。 48 他好比一個人蓋房子，把地挖深，根基立在磐石上。當河流氾濫，洪水沖擊房子時，房子卻屹立不搖，因為它的根基穩固。 49 但聽了我的話卻不遵行的人，好比一個人沒有打根基，便將房子蓋在地面上，洪水一沖，房子立刻倒塌，完全毀壞了。」
百夫長的信心
7 耶穌向眾人講完道後，進了迦百農。 2 當時，有一個百夫長很賞識的奴僕病了，生命垂危。 3 百夫長聽說耶穌的事，就託幾位猶太人的長老去請耶穌來醫治他的奴僕。 4 他們便來懇求耶穌，說：「這位百夫長值得你幫助， 5 因為他愛我們的同胞，為我們建造會堂。」 6 耶穌就跟他們去了。
快抵達時，那百夫長又請幾位朋友去見耶穌，對祂說：「主啊，不用勞駕，我不配讓你親自來我家。 7 我自認不配見你的面，只要你一句話，我的奴僕必定康復。 8 因為我有上司，也有部下。我命令我的部下去，他就去；要他來，他就來。我吩咐奴僕做什麼事，他一定照辦。」
9 耶穌聽了這番話，感到驚奇，轉身對跟從祂的百姓說：「我告訴你們，就是在以色列，我也從未見過有這麼大信心的人。」
10 派去的幾位朋友回到百夫長家裡，發現那奴僕已經痊癒了。
寡婦獨子的起死回生
11 過了不久[e]，耶穌去拿因城，隨行的有門徒和一大群人。 12 耶穌快到城門口時，從城裡走出一隊送殯的人，死者是一個寡婦的獨子，有許多城中的人陪著她。 13 耶穌看見那寡婦，憐憫之心油然而生，就對她說：「不要哭！」 14 隨即上前按住抬屍架，抬的人停了下來。耶穌說：「年輕人，我吩咐你起來！」 15 那死者就坐了起來，並開口說話。耶穌把他交給他母親。
16 在場的人驚懼萬分，把榮耀歸給上帝，說：「我們中間出了一位大先知！」又說：「上帝眷顧了祂的百姓！」 17 有關祂的這消息傳遍了猶太和附近地區。
施洗者約翰的疑問
18 約翰從自己的門徒那裡獲悉這些事後， 19 就叫了兩個門徒來，派他們去問主：「將要來的那位就是你嗎？還是我們要等別人呢？」
20 他們找到耶穌，便問：「施洗者約翰派我們來請教你，『將要來的那位就是你嗎？還是我們要等別人呢？』」
21 那時，耶穌剛治好了許多患各種疾病和被鬼附身的人，又使許多瞎子得見光明。 22 耶穌便回答說：「你們回去把所見所聞告訴約翰，就是瞎子看見，瘸子走路，痲瘋病人得潔淨，聾子聽見，死人復活，窮人聽到福音。 23 凡對我沒有失去信心的人有福了！」
耶穌稱讚施洗者約翰
24 約翰的門徒離去後，耶穌對眾人談論約翰，說：「你們從前去曠野要看什麼呢？看隨風搖動的蘆葦嗎？ 25 如果不是，你們到底想看什麼？是看穿綾羅綢緞的人嗎？那些衣著華麗、生活奢侈的人住在王宮裡。 26 你們究竟想看什麼？看先知嗎？是的，我告訴你們，他不只是先知。 27 聖經上說，『看啊，我要差遣我的使者在你前面為你預備道路。』這裡所指的就是約翰。 28 我告訴你們，凡婦人所生的，沒有一個比約翰大，但上帝國中最微不足道的也比他大。」
29 眾百姓和稅吏聽了這番話，都承認上帝是公義的，因為他們接受了約翰的洗禮。 30 但那些法利賽人和律法教師沒有接受約翰的洗禮，拒絕了上帝為他們所定的旨意。
31 主又說：「我用什麼來比擬這個世代的人呢？他們像什麼呢？ 32 他們就如街頭上戲耍的孩童——彼此呼叫，
『我們吹娶親的樂曲，
你們不跳舞；
我們唱送葬的哀歌，
你們不哭泣。』
33 施洗者約翰來了，禁食禁酒，你們就說他被鬼附身了； 34 人子來了，又吃又喝，你們就說，『看啊，祂是個貪吃好酒之徒，與稅吏和罪人爲友！』 35 然而，智慧會在追求智慧的人身上得到驗證。」
罪婦的悔改
36 有一個法利賽人請耶穌到他家裡吃飯，耶穌應邀赴宴。 37 那城裡住著一個女人，生活敗壞。她聽說耶穌在那法利賽人家裡吃飯，就帶了一個盛滿香膏的玉瓶進去。 38 她站在耶穌背後，挨著祂的腳哭，淚水滴濕了祂的腳，就用自己的頭髮擦乾，又連連親祂的腳，並抹上香膏。
39 請耶穌的法利賽人看在眼裡，心想：「如果這人真的是先知，就該知道摸祂的是誰，是個什麼樣的女人，她是個罪人。」
40 耶穌對他說：「西門，我有話跟你說。」
西門答道：「老師，請說。」
41 耶穌說：「有一個債主借給一個人五百個銀幣，又借給另一個人五十個銀幣。 42 二人都沒有能力還債，這位債主就免了他們的債務。你想，哪一位會更愛債主呢？」
43 西門答道：「我相信是那個被免去較多債的人。」
44 耶穌說：「你判斷得對！」隨後轉向那女人，繼續對西門說：「你看見這女人了嗎？我到你家裡來，你沒有拿水給我洗腳，這女人卻用她的眼淚洗我的腳，還親自用頭髮擦乾。 45 你沒有親吻我，但我進來以後，這女人卻不停地吻我的腳。 46 你沒有用油為我抹頭，這女人卻用香膏抹我的腳。 47 所以我告訴你，她眾多的罪都被赦免了，因此她的愛深切；那些獲得赦免少的，他們的愛也少。」
48 耶穌對那女人說：「你的罪都被赦免了。」
49 同席的人彼此議論說：「這人是誰？竟然能赦免人的罪！」
50 耶穌又對那女人說：「你的信心救了你，平安地走吧！」
撒種的比喻
8 此後，耶穌到各城鎮去傳揚上帝國的福音。同行的有十二使徒， 2 還有幾個曾被邪靈和疾病纏身、現在已被醫治的婦女。其中有抹大拉的瑪麗亞，耶穌曾經從她身上趕出七個鬼， 3 還有希律的管家苦撒的妻子約亞娜，此外還有蘇珊娜等其他婦女。她們用自己的錢財資助耶穌和門徒。
4 那時，人群絡繹不絕地從各地聚集到耶穌面前，耶穌用比喻教導他們，說： 5 「有一個農夫到田裡撒種，有些種子落在路旁，被人踐踏，又被飛鳥吃掉了； 6 有些落在蓋著淺土的石頭地上，因水分不足，幼苗剛長出來就枯萎了； 7 有些落在荊棘叢中，荊棘長起來便把幼苗擠住了； 8 有些落在沃土裡，發芽生長，結出百倍的果實。」耶穌講完這番話後，高聲說：「有耳可聽的，就要留心聽。」
9 門徒請耶穌解釋這比喻的意思， 10 耶穌便說：「上帝國的奧祕只讓你們知道，對其他人，我就用比喻，使他們看卻看不見，聽卻聽不明白。 11 這個比喻的意思是這樣，種子代表上帝的道， 12 種子落在路旁是指人聽了道，隨後魔鬼來把道從他們心裡奪走了，不讓他們相信並得救； 13 種子落在蓋著淺土的石頭地上是指人聽了道，欣然接受了，但是沒有根基，只是暫時相信，一遇到試煉就放棄了； 14 種子落在荊棘叢中是指人聽了道，後來被生活的憂慮、錢財和享樂纏住了，以致結不出成熟的果實來； 15 種子落在沃土裡則是指人聽了道，用誠實良善的心堅忍持守，至終結出果實。
點燈的比喻
16 「沒有人點了燈，卻用器皿把它蓋起來或放到床底下，而是放在燈臺上，使進來的人能見到光。 17 掩蓋的事終會暴露出來，隱藏的秘密終會被人知道。 18 因此，你們要留心聽，因為凡有的，還要給他更多；凡沒有的，連他自以為已經擁有的也要被奪去。」
耶穌的親屬
19 這時，耶穌的母親和兄弟來找祂，由於人太多，他們無法靠近耶穌， 20 有人就對祂說：「你的母親和兄弟在外面想見你。」 21 耶穌卻說：「聽見上帝的話語並遵行的人就是我的母親、我的弟兄。」
平靜風浪
22 有一天，耶穌對門徒說：「我們到湖的對岸去吧。」於是他們坐船前往對岸。 23 途中耶穌睡著了。不料湖上忽然狂風大作，船灌滿了水，非常危險。 24 門徒過來喚醒耶穌，說：「主啊，主啊！我們快淹死了！」
耶穌醒來，就斥責風浪，頓時風平浪靜了。
25 耶穌對他們說：「你們的信心在哪裡呢？」
門徒又驚又怕，彼此議論說：「祂究竟是誰？一發命令，連風浪都聽祂的！」
格拉森趕鬼
26 他們渡過加利利湖，到了格拉森地區。 27 耶穌上岸後，迎面遇見當地一個被鬼附身的人。那人長期赤身露體，不住在房屋裡，只住在墓穴中。 28 他一見到耶穌，就仆倒在祂面前，高聲喊叫：「至高上帝的兒子耶穌，我和你有什麼關係？求求你，不要折磨我！」 29 這是因為耶穌已命令污鬼離開那人。那人多次被污鬼操縱，人們用鐵鏈腳鐐把他鎖起來看管，他竟把鎖鏈也扯斷，被鬼催逼到荒野。
30 耶穌問他：「你叫什麼名字？」
他說：「我叫『群』。」因為有一大群鬼附在那人身上。 31 鬼不斷央求耶穌不要叫牠們到無底坑去。
32 當時有一大群豬在附近山坡上覓食，污鬼就央求耶穌准許牠們進入豬群，耶穌答應了。 33 於是那群鬼便離開那人，進入豬群。那群豬就一路奔下陡坡，衝進湖裡淹死了。 34 放豬的人見此情形拔腿就跑，把這事告訴了城裡和鄉下的人。 35 人們出來看個究竟，到了耶穌那裡，發現那曾被鬼附身的人衣著整齊、神智清醒地坐在耶穌腳前，他們都很害怕。 36 目擊者把事情的始末告訴了他們。 37 格拉森地區的居民都十分害怕，請求耶穌離開那裡，耶穌便乘船回去了。
38 那從前被鬼附身的人懇求跟耶穌同行，耶穌卻對他說： 39 「你回家吧，把上帝為你所行的奇事告訴別人。」他就回去，走遍全城，四處傳揚耶穌為他所行的奇事。
雅魯求救
40 耶穌回到對岸，受到等候在那裡的百姓的歡迎。 41 一個名叫雅魯的會堂主管走過來俯伏在耶穌腳前，求耶穌到他家去，因為他有一個大約十二歲的獨生女快要死了。
42 耶穌前去雅魯家的時候，人群擁擠著祂。
患血漏病婦人的信心
43 有一個患了十二年血漏病的婦人耗盡了積蓄，到處求醫，但沒有人能醫治她。 44 婦人擠到耶穌的背後，摸了一下祂衣服的穗邊，她的血漏立刻止住了。
45 耶穌問：「誰摸我？」沒有人說摸過祂。
彼得說：「老師，眾人都在擁擠你。」
46 耶穌卻說：「一定有人摸了我，因為我感覺有能力從我身上出去。」
47 那婦人知道無法隱瞞，就戰戰兢兢地走過來，俯伏在耶穌腳前，把她摸了耶穌的衣裳後頑疾馬上痊癒的始末當眾說了出來。
48 耶穌對她說：「女兒，你的信心救了你！安心回去吧。」
雅魯女兒死而復活
49 耶穌還在說話的時候，有人從雅魯家趕來，對雅魯說：「你的女兒已經死了，不用麻煩老師了。」
50 耶穌聽見，就對雅魯說：「不要怕，只要信。你的女兒一定會好的！」
51 到了雅魯家，耶穌只准彼得、雅各、約翰和雅魯夫婦跟祂進去。 52 屋內的人都在為那女孩哀傷哭泣，耶穌說：「不要哭，她沒有死，只是睡著了。」 53 眾人就譏笑祂，因為他們明明知道那女孩死了。 54 耶穌拉著那女孩的手，說：「孩子，起來！」 55 她的靈魂就回來了，她立刻站了起來。耶穌吩咐人給她東西吃。 56 她的父母非常驚訝，耶穌卻囑咐他們不要把這事傳開。
差遣十二使徒
9 耶穌召集了十二個使徒，賜他們能力和權柄可以醫病趕鬼， 2 又差遣他們出去宣講上帝國的福音、醫治病人。 3 耶穌叮囑他們：「出門的時候，什麼也不要帶，不要帶手杖、背包、乾糧、金錢，也不要帶兩件衣服。 4 有人家接待你們，就住下來，一直住到你們離開。 5 如果有人不歡迎你們，你們在離開那城的時候，就把腳上的塵土跺掉，作為對他們的警告。」
6 使徒領命出發，走遍各個鄉村，到處宣揚福音，替人治病。
希律的困惑
7 耶穌的事蹟很快便傳到希律耳中，令他十分困惑，因為有人說：「約翰死而復活了」， 8 有人說：「以利亞顯現了」，還有人說：「古代的某個先知復活了」。 9 希律說：「約翰已經被我斬首，這個行奇事的人到底是誰呢？」於是他想見耶穌。
五餅二魚的神蹟
10 使徒回來後，向耶穌報告了他們所行的事。隨後耶穌帶著他們悄悄地來到伯賽大城。 11 但百姓發現了耶穌的行蹤，隨即也趕來了。耶穌接待他們，向他們宣講天國的福音，醫好了有病的人。 12 黃昏將近，十二個使徒過來對耶穌說：「請遣散眾人，好讓他們到附近的村莊去借宿找吃的，因為這地方很偏僻。」
13 耶穌對他們說：「你們給他們吃的吧。」
使徒們說：「我們只有五個餅和兩條魚，除非我們去買食物才夠這麼一大群人吃。」 14 當時那裡約有五千男人。
耶穌便對使徒說：「讓這些人分組坐下，每組大約五十人。」 15 於是使徒安排眾人都坐好。 16 耶穌拿起那五個餅、兩條魚，舉目望著天祝謝後，掰開遞給門徒，讓他們分給眾人。 17 大家都吃飽了，把剩下的零碎收拾起來，竟裝滿了十二個籃子。
彼得宣告耶穌是基督
18 有一次，耶穌獨自禱告的時候，門徒也在旁邊。
耶穌問他們：「人們說我是誰？」
19 他們答道：「有人說你是施洗者約翰，也有人說你是以利亞，或是一位復活的古代先知。」
20 耶穌對他們說：「那麼，你們說我是誰？」
彼得回答說：「你是上帝所立的基督。」
21 耶穌鄭重地吩咐他們不許洩露祂的身分， 22 又說：「人子必須受許多苦，被長老、祭司長和律法教師棄絕，殺害，但必在第三天復活。」
跟從主的代價
23 耶穌又教導眾人說：「如果有人要跟從我，就應當捨己，天天背起他的十字架跟從我。 24 因為想救自己生命的，必失去生命；但為了我而失去生命的，必得到生命。 25 人若賺得全世界，卻失去自己或喪掉自己，又有什麼益處呢？ 26 如果有人以我和我的道為恥，將來人子在自己、天父和聖天使的榮耀中降臨時，也必以這人為恥。 27 我實在告訴你們，有些站在這裡的人在有生之年就必看見上帝的國。」
登山變象
28 講完這些話後大約八天，耶穌帶著彼得、約翰和雅各一同到山上禱告。 29 耶穌在禱告的時候，容貌改變了，衣裳潔白發光。 30 忽然，摩西和以利亞二人在跟耶穌交談。 31 二人在榮光中顯現，談論有關耶穌離世的事情，就是祂在耶路撒冷將要成就的事。 32 彼得和兩個同伴都睏得睡著了，他們醒來後，看見了耶穌的榮光以及站在祂身邊的兩個人。 33 當摩西和以利亞要離開時，彼得對耶穌說：「老師，我們在這裡真好！讓我們搭三座帳篷，一座給你，一座給摩西，一座給以利亞。」其實彼得並不知道自己在說什麼。 34 他的話還沒說完，有一朵雲彩飄來，籠罩他們，他們進入雲彩中，都很害怕。 35 雲彩中有聲音說：「這是我的兒子，是我揀選的，你們要聽從祂！」 36 聲音消逝了，門徒只見耶穌獨自在那裡。那些日子，他們對這事都絕口不提，沒有告訴任何人。
山下趕鬼
37 次日，他們來到山下，有一大群人迎接耶穌。 38 人群中有一個人高聲喊叫：「老師，求求你看看我的兒子吧！他是我的獨生子， 39 鬼控制著他，他常常突然狂喊亂叫、抽搐、口吐白沫，倍受折磨，無休無止。 40 我曾求過你的門徒把鬼趕出去，但他們都無能為力。」
41 耶穌回答說：「唉！這又不信又敗壞的世代啊！我要跟你們在一起容忍你們多久呢？把你的兒子帶來吧。」

不肯接待耶穌的村莊
51 耶穌被接回天家的日子快到了，祂決定前往耶路撒冷。 52 祂先派人到撒瑪利亞的一個村莊去預備食宿， 53 但撒瑪利亞人見他們是上耶路撒冷去的，不肯接待他們。 54 祂的門徒雅各和約翰見狀，說：「主啊，你要我們[f]叫天上的火降下來燒死他們嗎？」 55 耶穌轉過身來責備他們[g]。 56 接著，一行人改道去另一個村子。
跟從主的代價
57 在路上有人對耶穌說：「無論你往哪裡去，我都要跟從你。」

59 耶穌又對另一個人說：「跟從我！」但是那人說：「主啊，請讓我先回去安葬我的父親。」

61 又有一個人說：「主啊！我願意跟從你，但請讓我先回去向家人告別。」
62 耶穌說：「手扶著犁向後看的人不配進上帝的國。」
差遣門徒
10 事後，主揀選了七十個門徒[h]，差遣他們兩個兩個地出去，先到祂將要去的城鎮村莊， 2 並對他們說：「要收割的莊稼很多，工人卻很少，因此你們要祈求莊稼的主人派更多的工人去收割祂的莊稼。
3 「你們去吧！我差你們出去，就像把羊羔送入狼群。 4 錢袋、背包和鞋都不要帶，在路上也不要與人寒暄。 5 無論到哪一戶人家，要先說，『願祝福臨到這家！』 6 如果那裡有配得祝福的人，祝福自然會臨到那人，否則祝福仍歸給你們。 7 不要搬來搬去，要固定住在一家，接受那家的款待，因為工人理應得到工錢。

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9 he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)
11 Then an angel(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(Q) 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(R) 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(T) 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(U) 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. 18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”(AD)
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.”
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.”(AR)
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

The Birth of John the Baptist
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(BR)
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(BT) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(BW)

The Birth of Jesus
2 In those days Caesar Augustus(CS) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.(CT) 2 (This was the first census that took place while[e] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)(CU) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(CV) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(CW) and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel(CX) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(CY) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(CZ) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(DA) the Lord.(DB) 12 This will be a sign(DC) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(DE) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(DF) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(DG) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Jesus Presented in the Temple
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(DJ) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[f]),(DK) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[g](DL)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(DM) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(DN) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(DO) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(DP)
you may now dismiss[h] your servant in peace.(DQ)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(DR)
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(DS)
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(DT) “This child is destined to cause the falling(DU) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
36 There was also a prophet,(DV) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[i](DW) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(DX) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(DY)
39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(DZ) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(EA)
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(EB) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(EC) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(ED) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(EE) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[j](EF) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(EG)
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(EH) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(EI) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(EJ)
John the Baptist Prepares the Way(EK)(EL)
3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(EM) was governor of Judea, Herod(EN) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(EO) the word of God came to John(EP) son of Zechariah(EQ) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(ER) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[k](ES)
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(ET) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(EU) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(EV) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(EW)
10 “What should we do then?”(EX) the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(EY)
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(EZ) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(FA) he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(FB)—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(FC) might possibly be the Messiah.(FD) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[l] water.(FE) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[m] the Holy Spirit and fire.(FF) 17 His winnowing fork(FG) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(FH) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod(FI) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(FJ)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(GA)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(GB) left the Jordan(GC) and was led by the Spirit(GD) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(GE) he was tempted[p] by the devil.(GF) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(GG) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[q]”(GH)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(GI) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(GJ) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[r]”(GK)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[s]”(GL)
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[t]”(GM)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(GN) he left him(GO) until an opportune time.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14 Jesus returned to Galilee(GP) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(GQ) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(GR) and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth,(GS) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(GT) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(GU) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(GV)
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(GW) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[u](GX)
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(GY) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(GZ) in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(HA)
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(HB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(HC)
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(HD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(HE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(HF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[v] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(HG)
28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(HH) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(HI)
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(HJ)
31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(HK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(HL) because his words had authority.(HM)
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(HN) Jesus of Nazareth?(HO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(HP)—the Holy One of God!”(HQ)
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(HR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed(HS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(HT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(HU)
Jesus Heals Many(HV)(HW)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(HX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(HY) he healed them.(HZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(IA) But he rebuked(IB) them and would not allow them to speak,(IC) because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(ID) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(IE)
Jesus Calls His First Disciples(IF)
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[w] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(IG) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(IH)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(II)
5 Simon answered, “Master,(IJ) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(IK) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(IL) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(IM) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(IN) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(IO)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(IP)
12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[x](IQ) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(IR) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(IS) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(IT) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(IU)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(IV)
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(IW) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(IX) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(IY)
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(IZ)
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(JA) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(JB) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(JC)
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(JD) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(JE)
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(JF) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(JG) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(JH)
31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(JI)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(JJ)
33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(JK) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(JL) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(JM) in those days they will fast.”
36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.

7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

4 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.
32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
5 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
12 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
13 And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
14 And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
15 But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
28 And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
33 And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
6 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.
2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;
4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
6 And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.
7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.
8 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.
9 Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,
16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.
17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;
18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.
19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.
30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?
40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.
41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.
43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
7 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
8 And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,
2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:
5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.
8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?
10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.
18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
19 Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.
20 And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.
35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.
37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.
38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,
39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:
42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.
48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.
52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.
54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
9 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.
16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
10 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
