Psalm 35
Of David.
1 Contend,(A) Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight(B) against those who fight against me.
2 Take up shield(C) and armor;
arise(D) and come to my aid.(E)
3 Brandish spear(F) and javelin[a](G)
against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
“I am your salvation.(H)”
4 May those who seek my life(I)
be disgraced(J) and put to shame;(K)
may those who plot my ruin
be turned back(L) in dismay.
5 May they be like chaff(M) before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord(N) driving them away;
6 may their path be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
7 Since they hid their net(O) for me without cause(P)
and without cause dug a pit(Q) for me,
8 may ruin overtake them by surprise—(R)
may the net they hid entangle them,
may they fall into the pit,(S) to their ruin.
9 Then my soul will rejoice(T) in the Lord
and delight in his salvation.(U)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
“Who is like you,(V) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong(W) for them,
the poor and needy(X) from those who rob them.”
11 Ruthless witnesses(Y) come forward;
they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good(Z)
and leave me like one bereaved.
13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth(AA)
and humbled myself with fasting.(AB)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14 I went about mourning(AC)
as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
as though weeping for my mother.
15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;(AD)
assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
They slandered(AE) me without ceasing.
16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;[b](AF)
they gnashed their teeth(AG) at me.
17 How long,(AH) Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their ravages,
my precious life(AI) from these lions.(AJ)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;(AK)
among the throngs(AL) I will praise you.(AM)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
who are my enemies(AN) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason(AO)
maliciously wink the eye.(AP)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
but devise false accusations(AQ)
against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They sneer(AR) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!(AS)
With our own eyes we have seen it.”
22 Lord, you have seen(AT) this; do not be silent.
Do not be far(AU) from me, Lord.
23 Awake,(AV) and rise(AW) to my defense!
Contend(AX) for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
do not let them gloat(AY) over me.
25 Do not let them think, “Aha,(AZ) just what we wanted!”
or say, “We have swallowed him up.”(BA)
26 May all who gloat(BB) over my distress(BC)
be put to shame(BD) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me(BE)
be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who delight in my vindication(BF)
shout for joy(BG) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
who delights(BH) in the well-being of his servant.”(BI)

1 Een lied van David.
Heer, verdedig mij tegen de mensen die me beschuldigen.
Kom voor mij op tegen de mensen die me aanvallen.
2 Grijp uw schild en een wapen
en kom mij te hulp!
3 Trek uw speer en houd mijn achtervolgers tegen.
Zeg dat U me zal redden.
4 Ze willen me doden.
Heer, zorg dat ze bedrogen uitkomen!
Ze willen me vernietigen.
Heer, sla hen terug
zodat ze terugdeinzen, rood van schaamte.
5 Maak hen tot stof in de wind
wanneer uw Engel hen neerslaat.
6 Maak hun weg donker en glibberig
wanneer Hij hen achtervolgt.
7 Want ze hebben een val voor mij opgezet.
Ze willen me doden, zonder dat ik hun kwaad heb gedaan.
8 Maak dat het opeens met hen is afgelopen,
plotseling, terwijl ze niets vermoeden.
Laat hén in de val lopen die ze voor míj hadden opgezet.
9 Maar ik juich over de Heer.
Ik juich omdat Hij mij heeft gered.
10 Met mijn hele hart zeg ik:
"Heer, er is niemand zoals U!"
U redt de mensen die worden verdrukt
door iemand die sterker is dan zij.
U redt de arme en verdrukte mensen
van de mensen die hen beroven.
11 Leugenaars beschuldigen mij van dingen die helemaal niet waar zijn.
Ze stellen me vragen over dingen die ik niet heb gedaan.
12 Ik ben goed voor hen geweest,
maar als dank zijn zij nu slecht voor míj.
Ze willen me doden!
13 Maar wat deed ík?
Toen zij ziek waren, trok ik rouwkleren aan.
Ik at niet en ik bad vurig voor hen,
14 zo vurig als voor een vriend of broer.
Ik liep rond in zwarte kleren en met gebogen hoofd,
zoals ik zou doen bij de dood van mijn moeder.
15 Maar nu het slecht met míj gaat,
maken zij daar plezier over.
Ze komen in drommen kijken!
Mensen die ik niet eens ken, komen om mij heen staan.
Ze schelden me aldoor uit, er komt geen einde aan.
16 Ze maken me belachelijk
en bedreigen me.
17 Heer, hoelang blijft U nog toekijken zonder iets te doen?
Ze gaan tegen me tekeer als jonge leeuwen,
en ik sta helemaal alleen tegenover hen.
Red mij alstublieft van hen,
want ze willen mijn leven verwoesten.
18 Dan zal ik U prijzen,
wanneer we in een grote groep bij elkaar komen.
19 Mijn vijanden haten mij zonder enige reden.
Ze genieten van mijn ellende.
Heer, maak daar toch een einde aan!
20 Ze maken plannen
om onschuldige mensen kwaad te doen.
21 Ze lachen luid tegen mij:
"Ha, ha, we hebben je heus wel door!
Het is afgelopen met je!"
22 U heeft het toch gezien, Heer, zwijg niet!
Heer, laat me niet in de steek!
23 Sta op, Heer, en kom voor mij op!
Mijn God en mijn Heer, U bent mijn Rechter!
24 Mijn Heer God, kom voor mij op,
want U bent rechtvaardig.
Dan zullen ze geen plezier over mij hebben.
25 Dan zullen ze niet kunnen zeggen:
"Ha, het is ons gelukt, we hebben hem!"
26 Zorg dat iedereen die plezier heeft over mijn ellende
straks rood zal worden van schaamte.
Dat iedereen die nu zo tegen me tekeer gaat,
voor schut zal komen te staan.
27 Maar de mensen die willen
dat ik rechtvaardig behandeld zal worden,
zullen juichen en blij zijn.
Ze zullen aldoor zeggen: "De Heer is geweldig!
Hij wil graag dat het zijn dienaar goed gaat."
28 Ik zal altijd en overal vertellen dat U eerlijk en rechtvaardig bent.
Elke dag zal ik U prijzen.

35 Lord, oppose those who oppose me.
Fight those who fight me.
2 Pick up your shields, large and small.
Get up and help me!
3 Take a spear and javelin
and fight those who are chasing me.
Tell me, “I will rescue you.”
4 Some people are trying to kill me.
Disappoint them and make them ashamed.
Make them turn and run away.
They are planning to hurt me.
Defeat and embarrass them.
5 Make them like chaff blown by the wind.[a]
Let them be chased by the Lord’s angel.
6 Make their road dark and slippery.
Let the Lord’s angel chase them.
7 I did nothing wrong, but they tried to trap me.
For no reason at all, they dug a pit to catch me.
8 So let them fall into their own traps.
Let them stumble into their own nets.
Let some unknown danger catch them.
9 Then I will rejoice in the Lord.
I will be happy when he saves me.
10 With my whole self I will say,
“Lord, there is no one like you.
You protect the poor from those who are stronger.
You save the poor and helpless from those who try to rob them.”
11 There are witnesses[b] trying to harm me.
They ask me questions that I know nothing about.
12 They pay me back evil for the good I have done.
They make me so very sad.
13 When they were sick, I was sad and wore sackcloth.
I went without eating to show my sorrow.
(May my prayers for them not be answered!)
14 I mourned for them as I would for a friend or a brother.
I bowed low with sadness, crying as I would for my own mother.
15 But when I had troubles, they laughed at me.
They were not really friends.
I was surrounded and attacked
by people I didn’t even know.
16 They made fun of me, using the worst language.
They ground their teeth to show their anger.
17 My Lord, how long will you watch this happen?
Save my life from these people
who are attacking me like lions and trying to destroy me.
18 I will praise you in the great assembly.
I will praise you there among the crowds.
19 Don’t let my lying enemies keep on laughing at me.
They have no reason to hate me.
Surely they will be punished for their secret plans.[c]
20 They have no friendly words for others,
but plan ways to hurt those who want to live in peace.
21 They are telling lies about me.
They say, “Aha! We know what you did!”
22 Lord, surely you can see what is happening.
So don’t keep quiet.
Lord, don’t leave me.
23 Wake up! Get up!
My God and my Lord, fight for me, and bring me justice.
24 Lord my God, judge me with your fairness.
Don’t let those people laugh at me.
25 Don’t let them think, “Aha! We got what we wanted!”
Don’t let them say, “We destroyed him!”
26 Let my enemies be ashamed and embarrassed—
all those who were happy about my troubles.
Proud of themselves, they treated me as worthless.
So let them be covered with shame and disgrace.
27 To those who want the best for me,
I wish them joy and happiness.
May they always say, “Praise the Lord,
who wants what is best for his servant.”
28 So, Lord, I will tell people how good you are.
I will praise you all day long.

35 Combate, oh Señor, a los que me combaten(A);
ataca a los que me atacan(B).
2 Echa mano del broquel y del escudo(C),
y levántate en mi ayuda(D).
3 Empuña también la lanza y el hacha[a] para enfrentarte a los que me persiguen;
di a mi alma: Yo soy tu salvación(E).
4 Sean avergonzados y confundidos[b] los que buscan mi vida[c](F);
sean puestos en fuga y humillados los que traman el mal contra mí(G).
5 Sean como paja delante del viento(H),
con el ángel del Señor acosándolos.
6 Sea su camino tenebroso y resbaladizo(I),
con el ángel del Señor persiguiéndolos.
7 Porque sin causa me tendieron su red[d](J);
sin causa cavaron fosa[e] para mi alma(K).
8 Que venga destrucción sobre él sin darse cuenta(L),
y la red que él mismo tendió lo prenda(M),
¡que caiga en esa misma destrucción(N)!
9 Y mi alma se regocijará en el Señor(O);
en su salvación se gozará(P).
10 Dirán todos mis huesos(Q): Señor, ¿quién como tú(R),
que libras al afligido de aquel que es más fuerte(S) que él,
sí, al afligido y al necesitado de aquel que lo despoja[f](T)?
11 Se levantan testigos malvados(U),
y de lo que no sé me preguntan.
12 Me devuelven mal por bien(V)
para aflicción de mi alma.
13 Pero yo, cuando ellos estaban enfermos(W), vestía de cilicio[g](X);
humillé mi alma con ayuno(Y),
y mi oración se repetía en[h] mi pecho(Z).
14 Como por mi amigo, como por mi hermano, andaba de aquí para allá;
como el que está de duelo por la madre, enlutado me encorvaba(AA).
15 Pero ellos se alegraron en mi tropiezo[i](AB), y se reunieron;
los agresores[j], a quienes no conocía, se juntaron contra mí(AC);
me despedazaban[k] sin cesar(AD).
16 Como bufones impíos en una fiesta,
rechinaban sus dientes contra mí(AE).
17 ¿Hasta cuándo, Señor, estarás mirando(AF)?
Rescata mi alma de sus estragos(AG),
mi única vida de los leones(AH).
18 En la gran congregación te daré gracias(AI);
entre mucha gente te alabaré(AJ).
19 No permitas que se regocijen a costa mía(AK) los que injustamente son mis enemigos(AL),
ni que guiñen el ojo con malicia(AM) los que sin causa me aborrecen(AN).
20 Porque ellos no hablan paz,
sino que piensan palabras engañosas[l] contra los pacíficos de la tierra(AO),
21 y abrieron bien grande su boca contra mí(AP);
dijeron: ¡Ajá, ajá, nuestros ojos lo han visto(AQ)!
22 Tú lo has visto(AR), Señor, no calles(AS);
Señor, no estés lejos de mí(AT).
23 Despierta y levántate para mi defensa(AU)
y para mi causa, Dios mío y Señor mío.
24 Júzgame conforme a tu justicia(AV), oh Señor, Dios mío;
que no se rían de mí(AW).
25 Que no digan en su corazón: ¡Ajá, lo que queríamos(AX)!
Que no digan: ¡Lo hemos devorado(AY)!
26 Sean avergonzados y humillados a una los que se alegran de mi mal(AZ);
cúbranse de vergüenza y deshonra los que se engrandecen contra mí(BA).
27 Canten de júbilo y regocíjense(BB) los que favorecen mi vindicación(BC);
y digan continuamente: Engrandecido sea el Señor(BD),
que se deleita en la paz[m] de su siervo(BE).
28 Y mi lengua hablará de tu justicia
y de tu alabanza todo el día(BF).
