关于摩押的预言
48 论到摩押，以色列的上帝——万军之耶和华说：
“尼波大祸临头了！
它必被毁灭；
基列亭必蒙羞沦陷，
堡垒必蒙羞被毁。
2 摩押不再受称赞，
敌人在希实本图谋害她，说，
‘来吧！我们铲除这个国家。’
玛得缅啊，你也将被敌人追杀，
变得死寂无声。
3 “从何罗念传来呼喊声，
‘荒凉了！毁灭了！’
4 摩押灭亡了，
她的孩童放声哀哭。
5 摩押人痛哭着走上鲁希坡，
他们在何罗念的山坡下听见悲惨的哀号。
6 逃命吧！藏到旷野去吧！
7 摩押啊，你要被攻占，
因为你倚仗自己的成就和财富。
你的神明基抹及供奉它的祭司和官长都要被掳去。
8 所有的城邑必被毁灭，
无一幸免；
山谷遭践踏，
平原被蹂躏。
这是耶和华说的。
9 “给摩押翅膀让她飞走吧[a]，
因为她的城邑将沦为废墟，
杳无人迹。
10 不殷勤地为耶和华做工，
不挥刀斩杀摩押人的必受咒诅。
11 “摩押自幼常享安逸，
从未被掳到别处，
好像沉淀的酒没有被从这缸倒到那缸，
味道依旧，香气未变。
12 “不过，看啊，时候将到，我要派倒酒的人去把她倒出来，倒空酒缸，把缸打碎。这是耶和华说的。 13 摩押人必因他们的神明基抹而羞愧，就像以色列人因信靠伯特利的神像而羞愧一样。
14 “摩押人啊，
你们怎能自称为骁勇善战的英雄呢？
15 摩押要灭亡了，
她的城邑要被摧毁，
她最勇敢的青年将被杀戮。

16 摩押快要被毁灭了，
灾难就要来临。
17 她的近邻和知道她名望的人啊，
你们都要为她哀悼，

你们要从荣耀的位子上下来，
坐在干旱的地上，

你们要站在路旁观望，
询问逃难的男女究竟发生了什么事。

她羞愧难当。

你们要在亚嫩河边宣告，
‘摩押灭亡了！’
21 “审判降临在平原上的何伦、雅杂、米法押、 22 底本、尼波、伯·低比拉太音、 23 基列亭、伯·迦末、伯·米恩、 24 加略、波斯拉等摩押各地的城邑。 25 摩押的权势被粉碎了，她的力量被摧毁了。这是耶和华说的。
26 “你们要灌醉她，因为她藐视耶和华。她必在自己的呕吐物中打滚，被人耻笑。 27 摩押啊，你不是曾经嘲笑以色列吗？以色列难道是强盗吗？你每次谈到她总是不屑地摇头。
28 “摩押人啊，
你们要离开城邑，住到岩洞里，
像鸽子在岩缝里筑巢一样。
29 我们听说摩押人傲气冲天，
他们狂妄自大、心中高傲。
30 我知道狂傲的摩押不过是外强中干，
她的夸耀不过是虚张声势。
这是耶和华说的。
31 因此，我要为她哀号，
为摩押人痛哭，
为吉珥·哈列设人悲伤。
32 西比玛的葡萄树啊，
我为你们比为雅谢人哭得更悲痛！
你们的枝条虽然延伸到大海，
一直到雅谢，
但毁灭者已在蹂躏你们夏日的果子了！
33 摩押的沃土上再没有欢喜快乐的声音。
我使榨酒池不出酒，
再没有踩踏葡萄的欢呼声，
欢呼被呐喊取代。
34 “哀哭声从希实本传到以利亚利和雅杂，又从琐珥传到何罗念和伊基拉·施利施亚，因为连宁林的水也干涸了。” 35 耶和华说：“我要灭绝摩押那些在丘坛献祭和向假神烧香的人。 36 我的心为摩押悲鸣，好像凄凉的箫声；我的心为吉珥·哈列设人悲鸣，他们的一切财富都消失了。 37 他们都悲哀地剃去发须，割伤双手，腰束麻布。 38 在摩押境内的屋顶和街头巷尾，哀声处处可闻，因为我已把摩押打得粉碎，好像打碎没人要的器皿。这是耶和华说的。 39 摩押破碎不堪！她嚎啕痛哭，羞愧难当，令四围的人嗤笑、惊惧。”
40 耶和华说：
“看啊，敌人必像展翅疾飞的大鹰一样来攻击摩押。
41 他们要攻取城池，占领堡垒。
那时，摩押的勇士像临盆的妇人一样心惊胆战。
42 摩押必被摧毁，彻底灭亡，
因为她藐视耶和华。
43 摩押人啊！
你们要充满恐惧，
陷入深坑和网罗。
这是耶和华说的。
44 逃过惊恐的必落入深坑，
爬出深坑的必陷入网罗，
因为我惩罚摩押的时候到了。
这是耶和华说的。
45 “逃难的人来到希实本，
无助地站着，
因为希实本烈焰熊熊，
西宏的城火光冲天，
烧毁了摩押和其中的叛逆之人。
46 拜基抹神明的摩押人啊，
你们有祸了！
你们灭亡了！
你们的儿女都被掳去了。
47 但将来，我要使你们重整家园。
这是耶和华说的。”
对摩押的审判到此为止。

A destruição de Moabe
48 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, disse o seguinte a respeito de Moabe:
“Tenham pena do povo da cidade de Nebo
porque ela está destruída!
Quiriataim foi tomada,
a sua fortaleza poderosa foi arrasada,
e o seu povo ficou humilhado.
2 Acabou-se a glória de Moabe.
Em Hesbom, o inimigo faz os seus planos:
‘Vamos acabar com a nação de Moabe!’
Exércitos marcharão contra a cidade de Madmém,
e nela só restará o silêncio.
3 O povo de Horonaim grita:
‘Tudo está arrasado!
Tudo está destruído!’
4 “O país de Moabe ficou em ruínas;
as crianças estão chorando.
5 Escutem os seus soluços
no caminho que sobe para Luíte,
ouçam os seus gritos de aflição
na estrada que desce para Horonaim.
6 Ouve-se gente gritando:
‘Depressa!
Fujam para salvar a vida!
Corram como um jumento selvagem no deserto!’
7 “Moabe, você confiou na sua força e na sua riqueza,
mas agora você mesmo será dominado.
O seu deus Quemos será levado para fora do país,
junto com os seus príncipes e os seus sacerdotes.

tanto o vale como o planalto ficarão arrasados.
Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando.
9 Preparem uma pedra para o túmulo de Moabe,
pois logo esse país será destruído;
as suas cidades ficarão em ruínas,
e ninguém mais vai morar lá.”
10 Maldito aquele que é relaxado no serviço de Deus!
Maldito aquele que guarda a sua espada para não matar!
A destruição das cidades de Moabe
11 O Senhor Deus disse:
— O povo de Moabe sempre viveu em segurança e nunca foi levado como prisioneiro para fora do seu país. Moabe é como o vinho guardado, que nunca foi agitado, nem derramado de uma vasilha para outra. O seu gosto nunca se estragou, e o seu sabor não mudou.
12 — E assim está chegando o dia em que vou mandar pessoas para derramarem Moabe como se fosse vinho. Essas pessoas despejarão as vasilhas de Moabe e as quebrarão. 13 Então os moabitas ficarão desiludidos com o seu deus Quemos, assim como os israelitas ficaram desiludidos com Betel, um deus em que eles confiavam.
14 Homens de Moabe, como é que vocês dizem que são heróis,
que são soldados corajosos na guerra?
15 Moabe e as suas cidades serão destruídos,
e os seus melhores moços serão mortos.
Sou eu, o Rei, quem está falando.
O meu nome é Senhor, o Todo-Poderoso.
16 A desgraça dessa nação está chegando;
a sua destruição virá logo.
17 Tenham pena de Moabe,
vocês que moram perto,
todos vocês que conhecem a sua fama.
Digam: “O seu grande poder se acabou;
a sua glória e a sua força não existem mais.”
18 Vocês que moram em Dibom,
desçam do seu lugar de honra
e sentem no chão, no pó.
O destruidor de Moabe está aqui;
ele arrasará as suas fortalezas.
19 Vocês que vivem em Aroer,
fiquem na beira do caminho e esperem;
perguntem aos que estão fugindo o que foi que aconteceu.
20 Eles vão responder:
“O país de Moabe caiu.
Chorem por ele, pois está destruído.
Anunciem pelas margens do rio Arnom
que Moabe foi arrasado!”
21 As cidades do planalto foram condenadas: Holom, Jasa, Mefaate, 22 Dibom, Nebo, Bete-Diblataim, 23 Quiriataim, Bete-Gamul, Bete-Meão, 24 Queriote e Bosra. Todas as cidades de Moabe, de longe e de perto, foram condenadas. 25 O poder de Moabe foi esmagado, e a sua força foi destruída. Eu, o Senhor, estou falando.
A humilhação de Moabe
26 E o Senhor continuou:
— Façam com que Moabe fique bêbado, pois se revoltou contra mim, o Senhor Deus. Moabe rolará no seu próprio vômito, e os outros zombarão dele. 27 Moabe, você lembra de como zombou do povo de Israel? Você tratou esse povo como se tivesse sido preso junto com uma quadrilha de ladrões.
28 — Vocês que vivem em Moabe, abandonem as suas cidades e vão viver no meio das rochas. Façam como as pombas que constroem os seus ninhos na beira dos precipícios. 29 Temos ouvido falar do orgulho de Moabe. Esse povo é orgulhoso, soberbo, vaidoso e cheio de si. 30 Eu, o Senhor, conheço o seu orgulho. Os moabitas se gabam de coisas que não valem nada, coisas que acabam. 31 Por isso, eu chorarei por todo o povo de Moabe e pelo povo de Quir-Heres. 32 Chorarei mais pelo povo de Sibma do que pelo povo de Jazer. Cidade de Sibma, você é como uma parreira; os seus ramos passam por cima do mar Morto e vão até a cidade de Jazer. Mas agora os inimigos acabaram com as suas plantações de cereais e de uvas. 33 A felicidade e a alegria desapareceram das boas terras de Moabe. Não se faz mais vinho; não há ninguém para fazer vinho e gritar de alegria.
34 — O povo das cidades de Hesbom e Eleal grita, e o seu grito pode ser ouvido até em Jasa. Pode ser ouvido pelos moradores de Zoar e até em Horonaim e Nova Eglate. O próprio riacho Ninrim secou. 35 Eu farei com que o povo de Moabe pare de apresentar ofertas queimadas no alto dos montes e de oferecer sacrifícios aos seus deuses. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando.
36 — Por isso, o meu coração chora por Moabe e pelo povo de Quir-Heres, como alguém que toca música fúnebre numa flauta; pois tudo o que tinham acabou. 37 Em sinal de tristeza, todos eles raparam a cabeça e cortaram a barba. Todos fizeram cortes nas mãos e vestiram roupa feita de pano grosseiro. 38 Nos terraços de todas as casas e em todas as praças só há choro porque eu quebrei Moabe como um jarro que ninguém quer. 39 Moabe está arrasado! Gritem! A desgraça caiu sobre Moabe. O país está em ruínas, e todas as nações vizinhas caçoam dele. Eu, o Senhor, estou falando.
Moabe não poderá escapar
40 — Eu, o Senhor, prometi que uma nação atacará Moabe e cairá em cima dele como uma águia com as asas abertas. 41 As suas cidades e fortalezas serão tomadas. Naquele dia, os soldados de Moabe terão tanto medo como a mulher que está com dores de parto. 42 Moabe vai ser destruído e não será mais uma nação, pois se revoltou contra mim. 43 Medo, covas e armadilhas esperam pelos moradores de Moabe. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando. 44 Os que fugirem de medo cairão nas covas, e os que conseguirem sair das covas ficarão presos nas armadilhas, pois eu marquei o dia da destruição de Moabe. 45 Outros fogem cansados e procuram proteção na cidade de Hesbom. Mas Hesbom, a cidade que já foi governada pelo rei Seom, está em chamas. O fogo queimou as fronteiras e os picos das montanhas de Moabe, que ama tanto a guerra. 46 Coitado do povo de Moabe! 48 Concerning Moab:(B)
This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“Woe to Nebo,(C) for it will be ruined.
Kiriathaim(D) will be disgraced and captured;
the stronghold[a] will be disgraced and shattered.
2 Moab will be praised(E) no more;
in Heshbon[b](F) people will plot her downfall:
‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’(G)
You, the people of Madmen,[c] will also be silenced;
the sword will pursue you.
3 Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,(H)
cries of great havoc and destruction.
4 Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.[d]
5 They go up the hill to Luhith,(I)
weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim(J)
anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
6 Flee!(K) Run for your lives;
become like a bush[e] in the desert.(L)
7 Since you trust in your deeds and riches,(M)
you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh(N) will go into exile,(O)
together with his priests and officials.(P)
8 The destroyer(Q) will come against every town,
and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
and the plateau(R) destroyed,
because the Lord has spoken.
9 Put salt(S) on Moab,
for she will be laid waste[f];(T)
her towns will become desolate,
with no one to live in them.
10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword(U) from bloodshed!(V)
11 “Moab has been at rest(W) from youth,
like wine left on its dregs,(X)
not poured from one jar to another—
she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed(Y) of Chemosh,(Z)
as Israel was ashamed
when they trusted in Bethel.(AA)
14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,(AB)
men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
her finest young men(AC) will go down in the slaughter,(AD)”
declares the King,(AE) whose name is the Lord Almighty.(AF)
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;(AG)
her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
all who know her fame;(AH)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,(AI)
how broken the glorious staff!’
18 “Come down from your glory
and sit on the parched ground,(AJ)
you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,(AK)
for the one who destroys Moab
will come up against you
and ruin your fortified cities.(AL)
19 Stand by the road and watch,
you who live in Aroer.(AM)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
Wail(AN) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon(AO)
that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau(AP)—
to Holon,(AQ) Jahzah(AR) and Mephaath,(AS)
22 to Dibon,(AT) Nebo(AU) and Beth Diblathaim,
23 to Kiriathaim,(AV) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,(AW)
24 to Kerioth(AX) and Bozrah(AY)—
to all the towns(AZ) of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn[g](BA) is cut off;
her arm(BB) is broken,”
declares the Lord.
26 “Make her drunk,(BC)
for she has defied(BD) the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;(BE)
let her be an object of ridicule.(BF)
27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?(BG)
Was she caught among thieves,(BH)
that you shake your head(BI) in scorn(BJ)
whenever you speak of her?
28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove(BK) that makes its nest
at the mouth of a cave.(BL)
29 “We have heard of Moab’s pride(BM)—
how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
and the haughtiness(BN) of her heart.
30 I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
“and her boasts(BO) accomplish nothing.
31 Therefore I wail(BP) over Moab,
for all Moab I cry out,
I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.(BQ)
32 I weep for you, as Jazer(BR) weeps,
you vines of Sibmah.(BS)
Your branches spread as far as the sea[h];
they reached as far as[i] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
on your ripened fruit and grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are gone
from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine(BT) from the presses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy.(BU)
Although there are shouts,
they are not shouts of joy.
34 “The sound of their cry rises
from Heshbon(BV) to Elealeh(BW) and Jahaz,(BX)
from Zoar(BY) as far as Horonaim(BZ) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.(CA)
35 In Moab I will put an end
to those who make offerings on the high places(CB)
and burn incense(CC) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
36 “So my heart laments(CD) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.(CE)
The wealth they acquired(CF) is gone.
37 Every head is shaved(CG)
and every beard(CH) cut off;
every hand is slashed
and every waist is covered with sackcloth.(CI)
38 On all the roofs in Moab
and in the public squares(CJ)
there is nothing but mourning,
for I have broken Moab
like a jar(CK) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
39 “How shattered(CL) she is! How they wail!
How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,(CM)
an object of horror to all those around her.”
40 This is what the Lord says:
“Look! An eagle is swooping(CN) down,
spreading its wings(CO) over Moab.
41 Kerioth[j](CP) will be captured
and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors(CQ)
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.(CR)
42 Moab will be destroyed(CS) as a nation(CT)
because she defied(CU) the Lord.
43 Terror(CV) and pit and snare(CW) await you,
you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
44 “Whoever flees(CX) from the terror
will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
the year(CY) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the midst of Sihon;(CZ)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls(DA) of the noisy boasters.
46 Woe to you, Moab!(DB)
The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
and your daughters into captivity.
47 “Yet I will restore(DC) the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.
Here ends the judgment on Moab.

48 Concerning Moab: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Woe to [the city of] Nebo, for it is laid waste! Kiriathaim is put to shame and taken; Misgab [the high fortress] is put to shame, broken down, and crushed.(A)
2 The glory of Moab is no more; in Heshbon [a border town between Reuben and Gad, east of the Jordan River] they planned evil against her, saying, Come, let us cut her off from being a nation. You also, O [town of] Madmen, shall be brought to silence; the sword shall pursue you.
3 The sound of a cry from Horonaim, [a cry of] desolation and great destruction!
4 Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard [as far as Zoar].
5 For the ascent of Luhith will be climbed [by successive bands of fugitives] with continual weeping; for on the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction.
6 Flee! Save your lives! But they shall be like a destitute and forsaken person in the wilderness.
7 For because you have trusted in your works [your bungling idol images] and in your treasures [instead of in God], you shall also be taken. And Chemosh [your god] shall go into captivity, his priests and his princes together.
8 And the destroyer shall come upon every city; no city shall escape. The [Jordan] valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be devastated, as the Lord has said.
9 Give wings to Moab, for [by that means only] she will flee and get away; her cities will be desolate, without any to dwell in them.
10 Cursed be he who does the work of the Lord negligently [with slackness, deceitfully]; and cursed be he who keeps back his sword from blood [in executing judgment pronounced by the Lord].
11 Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees [like wine] and has not been drawn off from one vessel to another, neither has he gone into exile. Therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent has not changed.
12 Therefore behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I shall send to [Moab] tilters who shall tilt him up and shall empty his vessels and break his bottles (earthenware) in pieces.
13 And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh [his god], as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.(B)
14 How can you say, We are heroes and mighty men in the war?
15 Moab has been made desolate, and his cities have gone up [in smoke and flame]; and his chosen young men have gone down to the slaughter, says the King, Whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16 The destruction of Moab is coming near, and his calamity hastens swiftly.
17 Bemoan him, all you [nations] who are around him, and all you [nations more remote] who know his name; say, How broken is the mighty scepter [of national power] and the splendid rod [of glory]!
18 Come down from your glory, you inhabitant of the Daughter of [a]Dibon, and sit on the ground among the thirsty! For the destroyer of Moab is advancing against you; he will destroy your strongholds.
19 O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way and watch! Ask him who flees and her who escapes, What has happened?
20 Moab is put to shame, for she is broken down. Wail and cry out! Tell by [the banks of] the Arnon that Moab is laid waste (destroyed).
21 Judgment has come upon the land of the plain—upon Holon and Jahzah and Mephaath,
22 And upon Dibon and Nebo and Beth-diblathaim,
23 And upon Kiriathaim and Beth-gamul and Beth-meon,
24 And upon Kerioth and Bozrah—and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near.
25 The horn (strength) of Moab is cut off, and his arm [of authority] is shattered, says the Lord.
26 Make him drunk, for he has magnified himself against the Lord [by resisting Reuben’s occupation of the land the Lord had assigned him]. Moab also shall splash in his vomit, and he too shall be held in derision.(C)
27 For was not Israel [an object of] derision to you? Was he found among thieves—since whenever you speak of him you wag your head [in scorn]?
28 O you inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities and dwell among the rocks, and be like the dove that makes her nest in the walls of the yawning ravine.
29 We have heard of the [giddy] pride of Moab, the extremely proud one—his loftiness, his arrogance, his conceit, and the haughtiness of his heart.
30 I know his insolent wrath, says the Lord, and the nothingness of his boastings and his deeds; they are false and have accomplished nothing.
31 Therefore I will wail over Moab, and I will cry out over the whole of Moab. Over the men of Kir-heres (Kir-hareseth) there will be sighing and mourning.(D)
32 O vines of Sibmah, I weep for you more than the weeping of Jazer [over its ruins and wasted vineyards]. Your tendrils [of influence] have gone over the sea, reaching even to Jazer. The destroyer has fallen upon your summer fruit harvest and your [season’s] crop of grapes.
33 Joy and gladness are taken away from the fruitful orchards and fields and from the land of Moab. And I have made the juice [of the grape] to fail from what is pressed out in the vats; no one treads [the grapes] with shouting. Their shouting is no shouting [of joy, but is a battle cry].
34 From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh even to Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah [like a three-year-old heifer], for even the waters of Nimrim have become desolations.
35 Moreover, I will cause to cease in Moab, says the Lord, the one who ascends and offers in the high place and the one who burns incense to his gods.
36 Therefore My heart moans and sighs for Moab like flutes, and My heart moans and sighs like flutes for the men of Kir-heres (Kir-hareseth); therefore [the remnant of] the abundant riches they gained has perished.
37 For every head is shaven bald and every beard cut off: upon all the hands are cuts (slashes) and upon the loins is sackcloth [all to express mourning].(E)
38 On all the housetops of Moab and in its streets there is lamentation everywhere, for I have broken Moab like a vessel in which there is no pleasure, says the Lord.
39 How it is broken down! How they wail! How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab has become [an object of] a derision and a [horrifying] terror to all who are round about him.
40 For thus says the Lord: Behold, he [Babylon] shall fly swiftly like an eagle and shall spread out his wings against Moab.(F)
41 Kerioth [and the cities] shall be taken and the strongholds seized; and the hearts of the mighty warriors of Moab in that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs [in childbirth].
42 And Moab shall be [b]destroyed from being a nation, because he has magnified himself against the Lord.
43 Terror and pit and snare are before you, O inhabitant of Moab, says the Lord.(G)
44 He who flees from the terror will fall into the pit, and he who gets up out of the pit will be taken and caught in the trap or snare; for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation (their inspection and infliction of punishment), says the Lord.
45 In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives stand powerless (stopped in their tracks, helpless and without strength), for a fire has gone forth from Heshbon, a flame from the midst of Sihon; it has destroyed the corner of Moab and the crowns of the heads of the ones in tumult [the proud Moabites].
46 Woe to you, O Moab! The people of [the god] Chemosh are undone; for your sons are taken away captive and your daughters into captivity.
47 Yet will I reverse the captivity and [c]restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days, says the Lord. Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

- Jeremiah 48:18 Dibon, known today as Dhiban, stands on two hills. The “Moabite Stone,” which contains a record of Moabite history, was found among the ruins of Dibon. The Aroer mentioned in this chapter (Jer. 48:19) stood on the north side of the river Arnon (Jer. 48:20), just south of Dibon. Mesha records on the “Moabite Stone” that he “built [restored] the city [Aroer] and made the road over the Arnon” (The Cambridge Bible).
- Jeremiah 48:42 Nebuchadnezzar (605-562 b.c.) subjugated the Moabites, but they continued to exist as a race into the first century a.d. (though the national existence of both Moab and Ammon seems to have ended long before the time of Christ). This in itself is a remarkable fulfillment of prophecy; but the fact that Moab’s fortunes are to be restored “in the latter days” (Jer. 48:47), and have proceeded toward that end before our very eyes, is even more startling. Yet Moab is only one of the numerous nations whose fate was accurately written down in advance by the ancient prophets of God.
