耶穌被釘十字架(A)

17 他們把耶穌帶去了。耶穌自己背著十字架出來,到了一個名叫“髑髏”的地方,希伯來話叫各各他。 18 他們就在那裡把耶穌釘在十字架上;和他一同釘十字架的,還有兩個人,一邊一個,耶穌在中間。 19 彼拉多寫了一個牌子,放在十字架上頭,寫的是:“猶太人的王拿撒勒人耶穌。” 20 有許多猶太人念了這牌子上所寫的,因為耶穌釘十字架的地方離城不遠,而且那牌子是用希伯來文、拉丁文和希臘文寫的。 21 猶太人的祭司長對彼拉多說:“不要寫‘猶太人的王’,要寫‘這個人自稱:我是猶太人的王’。” 22 彼拉多說:“我所寫的,我已經寫了!”

23 士兵把耶穌釘了十字架之後,就把他的衣服拿來,分成四分,每個兵一分。他們又拿他的內衣;這內衣是沒有縫的,是從上到下整件織成的。 24 因此,他們彼此說:“我們不要把它撕開,我們來抽籤吧,看看是誰的。”這就應驗了經上所說的:

“他們分了我的外衣,

又為我的內衣抽籤。”

士兵果然這樣作了。 25 站在耶穌十字架旁邊的,有他母親和他母親的姊妹,還有高羅巴的妻子馬利亞,和抹大拉的馬利亞。 26 耶穌看見母親,又看見他所愛的那門徒站在旁邊,就對母親說:“母親(“母親”原文作“婦人”),看!你的兒子。” 27 然後他對那門徒說:“看!你的母親。”從那時起,那門徒就把她接到自己的家裡去了。

耶穌死時的情形(B)

28 這事以後,耶穌知道一切都已經成就了,為了要使經上的話應驗,就說:“我渴了。” 29 在那裡有一個罈子,盛滿了酸酒,他們就拿海綿浸了酸酒,綁在牛膝草上,送到他的口裡。 30 耶穌嘗了那酸酒,說:“成了!”就低下頭,斷了氣。

31 因為那天是預備日,為了要避免屍體在安息日留在十字架上(因為那安息日是個重要的日子),猶太人就請求彼拉多打斷那些被釘十字架的人的腿,把他們拿下來。 32 於是士兵來了,把和耶穌一同釘十字架的那兩個人的腿都先後打斷了。 33 他們來到耶穌那裡,看見他已經死了,就沒有打斷他的腿。 34 但是有一個士兵用槍刺他的肋旁,立刻有血和水流出來。 35 那看見這事的人已經作證了,他的見證是真實的,他也知道自己所說的是實在的,使你們也相信。 36 這些事的發生,是要應驗經上所說的:“他的骨頭,一根也不可折斷。” 37 另有一處經文說:“他們要仰望自己所刺的人。”

耶穌葬在新墳墓裡(C)

38 這些事以後,有一個亞利馬太人約瑟來求彼拉多,要領耶穌的身體;他因為怕猶太人,就暗暗地作耶穌的門徒。彼拉多批准了,他便把耶穌的身體領去。 39 從前夜間來見耶穌的尼哥德慕也來了,帶著沒藥和沉香混合的香料,約有三十二公斤。 40 他們領取了耶穌的身體,照著猶太人的葬禮的規例,用細麻布和香料把他裹好。 41 在耶穌釘十字架的地方,有一個園子,園裡有一個新的墓穴,是從來沒有葬過人的。 42 因為那天是猶太人的預備日,又因為那墓穴就在附近,他們就把耶穌葬在那裡。

19 Then Pilate ordered that Jesus be taken away and whipped. The soldiers made a crown from some thorny branches and put it on Jesus’ head and put a purple robe around him. Then they came to him many times and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and hit him in the face.

Again Pilate came out and said to them, “Look, I am bringing Jesus out to you. I want you to know that I find nothing against him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

When the leading priests and the guards saw Jesus, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

But Pilate answered, “Crucify him yourselves, because I find nothing against him.”

The leaders answered, “We have a law that says he should die, because he said he is the Son of God.”

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid. He went back inside the palace and asked Jesus, “Where do you come from?” But Jesus did not answer him. 10 Pilate said, “You refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know I have power to set you free and power to have you crucified?”

11 Jesus answered, “The only power you have over me is the power given to you by God. The man who turned me in to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 After this, Pilate tried to let Jesus go. But some in the crowd cried out, “Anyone who makes himself king is against Caesar. If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard what they were saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at the place called The Stone Pavement. (In the Hebrew language[a] the name is Gabbatha.) 14 It was about noon on Preparation Day of Passover week. Pilate said to the crowd, “Here is your king!”

15 They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

Pilate asked them, “Do you want me to crucify your king?”

The leading priests answered, “The only king we have is Caesar.”

16 So Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be crucified.

Jesus Is Crucified

The soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross, Jesus went out to a place called The Place of the Skull, which in the Hebrew language[b] is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Jesus. They also crucified two other men, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate wrote a sign and put it on the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews. 20 The sign was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. Many of the people read the sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. 21 The leading priests said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews.’ But write, ‘This man said, “I am the King of the Jews.”’”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 After the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, with each soldier getting one part. They also took his long shirt, which was all one piece of cloth, woven from top to bottom. 24 So the soldiers said to each other, “We should not tear this into parts. Let’s throw lots to see who will get it.” This happened so that this Scripture would come true:

“They divided my clothes among them,
    and they threw lots for my clothing.” Psalm 22:18

So the soldiers did this.

25 Standing near his cross were Jesus’ mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the follower he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the follower, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, the follower took her to live in his home.

Jesus Dies

28 After this, Jesus knew that everything had been done. So that the Scripture would come true, he said, “I am thirsty.”[c] 29 There was a jar full of vinegar there, so the soldiers soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a branch of a hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ mouth. 30 When Jesus tasted the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and died.

31 This day was Preparation Day, and the next day was a special Sabbath day. Since the religious leaders did not want the bodies to stay on the cross on the Sabbath day, they asked Pilate to order that the legs of the men be broken[d] and the bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man on the cross beside Jesus. Then they broke the legs of the man on the other cross beside Jesus. 33 But when the soldiers came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers stuck his spear into Jesus’ side, and at once blood and water came out. 35 (The one who saw this happen is the one who told us this, and whatever he says is true. And he knows that he tells the truth, and he tells it so that you might believe.) 36 These things happened to make the Scripture come true: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”[e] 37 And another Scripture says, “They will look at the one they stabbed.”[f]

Jesus Is Buried

38 Later, Joseph from Arimathea asked Pilate if he could take the body of Jesus. (Joseph was a secret follower of Jesus, because he was afraid of some of the leaders.) Pilate gave his permission, so Joseph came and took Jesus’ body away. 39 Nicodemus, who earlier had come to Jesus at night, went with Joseph. He brought about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. 40 These two men took Jesus’ body and wrapped it with the spices in pieces of linen cloth, which is how they bury the dead. 41 In the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb that had never been used before. 42 The men laid Jesus in that tomb because it was nearby, and they were preparing to start their Sabbath day.

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(A)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(B) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(C) And they slapped him in the face.(D)

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(E) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(F) When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(G) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(H) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(I)

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(J) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(K)

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace.(L) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(M) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(N) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(O) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(P) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(Q) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(R) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(S) of the Passover; it was about noon.(T)

“Here is your king,”(U) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(V)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(W)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(X) he went out to the place of the Skull(Y) (which in Aramaic(Z) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(AA)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(AB) the king of the jews.(AC) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(AD) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(AE)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(AF) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.”[a](AG)

So this is what the soldiers did.

25 Near the cross(AH) of Jesus stood his mother,(AI) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(AJ) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(AK) there, and the disciple whom he loved(AL) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

The Death of Jesus(AM)

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(AN) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(AO) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(AP) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(AQ) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(AR) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(AS) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(AT) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(AU) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(AV) 35 The man who saw it(AW) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(AX) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(AY) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](AZ) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](BA)

The Burial of Jesus(BB)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(BC) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(BD) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(BE) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(BF) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(BG) and since the tomb was nearby,(BH) they laid Jesus there.

Pilatus dømmer Jesus til døden

19 Da ga Pilatus befaling til at Jesus skulle bli pisket. Soldatene laget en krone av tornekratt og satte den på hodet hans og kledde på ham en høyrød[a] kappe. De gikk fram til ham og sa: ”Leve jødenes konge”, og så slo de ham i ansiktet.

Senere gikk Pilatus igjen ut og sa til folket: ”Nå sender jeg ham ut til dere, slik at dere skal forstå at jeg ikke finner ham skyldig i noe.” Da Jesus kom ut med tornekronen og den mørkerøde kappen på seg, sa Pilatus: ”Her er mannen!”

Da øversteprestene og tempelvaktene fikk se ha, begynte de å rope: ”La ham spikres fast på et kors, spikre ham fast på et kors!”

Pilatus sa: ”Dere får selv ta ham og spikre ham fast. Jeg finner han ikke skyldig i noe.” Men de religiøse lederne svarte: ”I følge vår lov[b] skal han dø, for han har gitt seg ut for å være Guds sønn.”

Da Pilatus hørte dette, ble han virkelig redd. Han førte Jesus inn i huset på nytt og spurte ham: ”Hvor kommer du fra?” Men Jesus svarte ham ikke.

10 ”Vil du ikke svare meg?” spurte Pilatus. ”Vet du ikke at jeg har makt både til å gi deg fri og til å la deg blir spikret fast på et kors?”

11 Jesus svarte: ”Du ville ikke ha noen som helst makt over meg om du ikke hadde fått den av Gud. Derfor har de som overlot meg til deg, gjort seg skyldige i en større synd.”

12 Da forsøkte Pilatus å finne en måte å frigi Jesus på, men folket ropte: ”Dersom du setter han fri, er du ikke keiserens venn. Den som gjør seg til konge, gjør egentlig opprør mot keiseren.” 13 Da Pilatus hørte det de sa, førte han Jesus ut til dem på nytt og satte seg på dommersete på det stedet som ble kalt Steingården, og som på arameisk[c] heter ”Gabbata”. 14 Klokken var nå rundt tolv[d] på dagen, og det var fredag, som kalles forberedelsesdagen før påskehøytiden[e]. Pilatus sa til jødene: ”Her har dere kongen deres.”

15 Folket skrek: ”Bort med ham. La ham spikres fast på et kors!”

Da spurte Pilatus: ”Skal jeg virkelig henrette kongen deres på et kors?”

Men øversteprestene svarte: ”Vi har ingen annen konge enn keiseren.”

16 Da resignerte Pilatus og overlot Jesus til soldatene for at de skulle føre ham bort og la ham spikres fast på et kors.

Jesus blir spikret fast på et kors

Soldatene tok ham med seg. 17 Jesus ble tvunget til selv å bære korset sitt til det stedet som ble kalt Hodeskallen, som på arameisk heter ”Golgata”.

18 Der spikret de ham og to andre menn fast på hvert sitt kors. Jesus hengte de i midten og de to andre på hver sin side av ham. 19 Pilatus hadde fått skrevet en plakat som ble satt opp på korset. Der sto det: ”Jesus fra Nasaret, jødenes konge”. 20 Teksten var skrevet både på arameisk, latin og gresk. Etter som stedet der Jesus ble henrettet, lå nær byen, var det mange som leste plakaten.

21 Øversteprestene gikk da til Pilatus og forlangte: ”Få endret teksten fra dette med ’Jødenes konge’ til ’Han har sagt: Jeg er jødenes konge.’ ”

22 Men Pilatus svarte: ”Det jeg skrev, det skrev jeg! Ikke noe som helst skal bli endret.”

23 Da soldatene hadde spikret Jesus fast på korset, tok de klærne hans og delte i fire hauger, en for hver av vaktene. Men da de kom til kjortelen, viste det seg at den var vevd i et sammenhengende stykke uten sømmer. 24 Derfor sa de: ”Det er dumt å skjære den i stykker. Vi kaster heller lodd om hvem som skal få den.” Gjennom dette ble det som Gud hadde forutsagt i Skriften[f], til virkelighet: ”De delte mine klær mellom seg og kastet lodd om min klesdrakt.”[g] Ja, det var nøyaktig det soldatene gjorde.

25 Nær korset der Jesus hang, sto moren hans. Tanten hans, som var gift med Klopas og het Maria, var også sammen med Maria Magdalena. 26 Da Jesus så moren sin stå der ved siden den disippelen som han elsket,[h] sa han til henne: ”Mor, la ham være som sønnen din.” 27 Så sa han til disippelen: ”La henne være som moren din!” Fra den dagen av lot disippelen henne bo hjemme hos seg.

Jesus dør på korset

28 Jesus visste at oppdraget hans nå var sluttført. For at det som Gud hadde forutsagt i Skriften[i] skulle bli virkelighet, sa han: ”Jeg er tørst.”[j] 29 Noen dyppet da en svamp i en krukke fylt med sur vin som sto der. De festet den på en stilk fra isopplanten[k] og rakte den opp til munnen[l] hans. 30 Da Jesus hadde smakt på vinen, sa han: ”Det er fullbrakt.” Så bøyde han hodet og sluttet å puste.

31 Jødene ville ikke at de døde kroppene skulle henge på korset til neste dag som var hviledagen[m]. Dessuten var det en spesiell merkedag siden det var påske[n]. Derfor ba de Pilatus om å gi befaling til at de skulle knuse skjelettene på dem som var spikret fast på korsene. Da kunne kroppene bli tatt ned.[o] 32 Soldatene kom og knuste skjelettet på de to mennene som hadde blitt spikret opp på sine kors samtidig som Jesus. Først den ene mannen sine bein, så den andre. 33 Men da de kom fram til Jesus, så de at han allerede var død. Derfor knuste de ikke noen ben i kroppen hans. 34 En av soldatene nøyde seg i stedet med å stikke et spyd opp i siden hans. Da rant det blod og vann ut. 35 Det finnes en som kan stå fram som vitne om dette,[p] etter som han så det med egne øyne. Han vet at det han sier er sant, og han har fortalt dette for at dere skal tro.

36 Dette skjedde for at det som Gud hadde forutsagt i Skriften, skulle bli virkelighet: ”Ikke et eneste ben i kroppen hans skal bli knust.”[q] 37 På et annet stedet har Gud sagt: ”De skal se opp til han som de har gjennomstukket”[r].

Jesus blir begravd

38 Josef fra Arimatea, en som av frykt for de religiøse lederne hadde vært en hemmelig disippel av Jesus, ba Pilatus om å få ta ned kroppen til Jesus. Pilatus lot ham få gjøre det, og Josef gikk da og tok kroppen ned. 39 Nikodemus, den mannen som først hadde kommet til Jesus om natten, var også med. Han hadde med seg en blanding av myrra og aloe som veide omkring 30 kilo. 40 De to mennene svøpte kroppen til Jesus inn i tøy av lin sammen med den aromatisk blandingen. Dette var slik som de brukte å gjøre ved jødiske begravelser. 41 Plassen der Jesus ble spikret fast på korset, lå nær en hage. Der var det en ny grav som aldri hadde vært brukt. 42 Etter som hviledagen[s] snart skulle begynne, og graven lå så nær, la de Jesus i den.
