16 내가 너희에게 이 말을 하는 것은 너희가 믿음을 잃지 않게 하려는 것이다. 2 사람들은 너희를 회당에서 내쫓을 것이다. 그리고 너희를 죽이는 사람은 모두 자기가 하는 일이 하나님을 섬기는 일이라고 생각할 때가 오고 있다. 3 그들이 그런 일을 하는 것은 그들이 아버지도 모르고 나도 모르기 때문이다. 4 내가 너희에게 이런 말을 미리 일러둔다. 때가 되어 그런 일이 일어나면, 내가 그것에 대해 너희에게 미리 말했다는 것을 기억하게 하려는 것이다.
성령이 하시는 일
내가 이 말을 처음부터 너희에게 하지 않은 것은, 내가 너희와 함께 있었기 때문이다. 5 이제 나는 나를 보내신 분께 돌아간다. 그러나 너희는 아무도 나에게 ‘어디로 가십니까?’ 하고 묻지 않는다. 6 오히려 내가 한 말 때문에 너희의 마음이 온통 슬픔에 젖어 있다. 7 그러나 사실은, 내가 떠나는 것이 너희에게 유익이다. 내가 가지 않으면, 너희를 도와주실 성령이 너희에게 오시지 않을 것이다. 그러나 내가 가면 내가 그분을 너희에게 보내겠다. 8 그분은 오셔서 세상 사람들에게 그들이 죄를 지었다는 것과, 나는 의롭다는 것과, 그들이 심판을 받으리라는 것을 분명하게 보여 주실 것이다. 9 그분은, 그들이 나를 믿지 않기 때문에 죄를 지었다는 것을 보여 주실 것이다. 10 그리고 내가 아버지께 감으로써, 너희가 더는 나를 볼 수 없을 것이기 때문에, 내가 의롭다는 것을 분명히 보여 주실 것이다. 11 또 세상을 다스리는 악마가 이미 심판을 받았으므로, 세상도 심판을 받으리라는 것을 분명히 보여 주실 것이다.
12 내가 아직도 너희에게 할 말이 많다. 그러나 지금은 너희가 그 말을 감당할 수 없다. 13 그러나 그분 곧 진리의 영이 오셔서 너희를 이끌어 모든 진리를 깨닫게 하실 것이다. 그분은 자기 마음대로 말씀하지 않을 것이기 때문이다. 그분은 무엇이든지 자기가 듣는 것을 말씀하실 것이다. 그리고 앞으로 일어날 일을 보여 주실 것이다. 14 그분은 내게서 받은 것을 너희에게 보여 주어서, 나를 영광스럽게 해 주실 것이다. 15 아버님께 속한 것은 모두 내 것이다. 그러므로 내가, 성령께서 내 것을 받아서, 그것을 너희에게 보여 주실 것이라고 말하였다.
슬픔이 기쁨으로 바뀔 것이다
16 조금 있으면 너희는 나를 보지 못할 것이다. 그러나 조금 더 지나면 너희가 나를 다시 보게 될 것이다.”
17 몇몇 제자들이 서로에게 말하였다. “선생님께서 ‘조금 있으면 너희가 나를 보지 못할 것이다. 그러나 조금 더 지나면 너희가 나를 다시 보게 될 것이다.’ 라고 말씀하신 것이 무슨 뜻일까? 그리고 ‘내가 아버지께 가기 때문이다.’ 라고 말씀하신 것은 또 무슨 뜻일까?” 18 그들은 또 “도대체 ‘조금 있으면’ 이라는 말이 무슨 뜻일까? 그분이 하시는 말씀을 알 수가 없다.” 라고 말하였다.
19 예수께서는 그들이 이것에 관해 당신께 묻고 싶어하는 것을 아셨다. 그래서 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 ‘조금 있으면 너희가 나를 보지 못할 것이다. 그리고 조금 더 지나면 너희가 나를 다시 보게 될 것이다.’ 라는 말이 무슨 뜻인지를 서로에게 묻고 있느냐? 20 내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 너희는 울며 슬퍼하겠으나, 세상은 기뻐할 것이다. 너희가 슬픔에 잠기겠지만, 너희의 슬픔이 기쁨으로 바뀔 것이다. 21 여자가 아기를 낳을 때가 되면 걱정이 많다. 진통을 겪어야 할 때가 왔기 때문이다. 그러나 아기를 낳으면, 사람 하나가 이 세상에 태어났다는 기쁨에, 그 진통은 잊어버린다. 22 너희도 마찬가지다. 지금은 너희가 걱정한다. 그러나 내가 너희를 다시 보겠고, 너희는 기뻐할 것이다. 그리고 아무도 너희의 기쁨을 빼앗지 못할 것이다. 23 그날이 되면 너희는 나에게 아무것도 묻지 않을 것이다. 내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 내 아버지께서는 너희가 내 이름으로 구하는 것은 무엇이든지 다 주실 것이다. 24 너희는 지금까지 내 이름으로 무엇을 구한 적이 없다. 구하여라. 너희가 받을 것이다. 그러면 너희의 기쁨이 가득 찰 것이다.
세상을 이기는 승리
25 내가 지금까지는 비유[a]를 써서 너희에게 말해 왔다. 그러나 더는 비유를 써서 말하지 않고 알아듣기 쉬운 말로 아버지에 관하여 말할 때가 오고 있다. 26 그날이 오면 너희는 아버지께 내 이름으로 구할 것이다. 내가 너희를 위하여 아버지께 구하겠다는 말이 아니다. 27 아버지께서 몸소 너희를 사랑하신다. 너희가 나를 사랑했고, 내가 하나님께로부터 왔다는 것을 믿었기 때문이다. 28 나는 아버지께로부터 와서 이 세상으로 들어왔다. 이제 나는 세상을 떠나서 아버지께 돌아갈 것이다.”
29 그때에 제자들이 말하였다. “지금은 선생님께서 분명하게 말씀하시고, 비유를 써서 말씀하지 않으십니다. 30 이제 우리는 선생님께서 모든 것을 아신다는 것을 알겠습니다. 누구도 선생님께 여쭐 필요가 없습니다. 선생님께서는 누가 무엇을 여쭈어 보고 싶어하는지 다 알고 계십니다. 그러므로 우리는 선생님께서 하나님께로부터 오셨다는 것을 믿습니다.”
31 예수께서 대답하셨다. “그러면 이제는 믿느냐? 32 너희가 뿔뿔이 흩어져서, 저마다 자기 집으로 갈 때가 오고 있다. 그때가 벌써 왔다. 너희는 나 혼자만 버려 두고 떠날 것이다. 그러나 나는 혼자가 아니다. 내 아버지께서 나와 함께 계시기 때문이다.
33 내가 너희에게 이 말을 하는 것은, 너희가 내 안에서 평화를 얻게 하려는 것이다. 이 세상에서 너희가 고통을 겪을 것이다. 그러나 용기를 내어라! 내가 세상을 이겼다!”

16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”
