16 “我把這些事告訴了你們，使你們不致後退。 2 人要把你們趕出會堂；並且時候要到，所有要殺害你們的人，以為這樣就是事奉 神。 3 他們要作這些事，因為他們不認識父，也不認識我。 4 我把這些事告訴了你們，讓你們到了那個時候，可以想起我告訴過你們了。
聖靈的工作
“我起初沒有把這些事告訴你們，因為我跟你們在一起。 5 現在我要到那差我來的那裡去，你們中間並沒有人問：‘你到哪裡去？’ 6 然而因為我把這些事告訴了你們，你們心裡就充滿憂愁。 7 但我要把實情告訴你們，我去是對你們有益的。如果我不去，保惠師就不會到你們這裡來；我若去了，就會差他到你們這裡來。 8 他來了，就要在罪、在義、在審判各方面指證世人的罪。 9 在罪方面，是因為他們不信我； 10 在義方面，是因為我到父那裡去，你們就再看不見我； 11 在審判方面，是因為這世界的統治者已經受了審判。
12 “我還有許多事要告訴你們，可是你們現在擔當不了； 13 只等真理的靈來了，他要引導你們進入一切真理。他不是憑著自己說話，而是把他聽見的都說出來，並且要把將來的事告訴你們。 14 他要榮耀我，因為他要把從我那裡所領受的告訴你們。 15 父所有的一切，都是我的；所以我說，他要把從我那裡所領受的告訴你們。
你們的憂愁要變為喜樂
16 “不久，你們不會再看見我；再過不久，你們還要看見我。” 17 於是他的門徒中有幾個彼此說：“他對我們說：‘不久，你們不會看見我；再過不久，你們還要看見我。’又說：‘因為我到父那裡去。’這是甚麼意思呢？” 18 他們又說：“他所說的‘不久’，是甚麼意思呢？我們不曉得他在講甚麼。” 19 耶穌知道他們想問他，就說：“我所說的‘不久，你們不會看見我；再過不久，你們還要看見我’，你們為了這話彼此議論嗎？ 20 我實實在在告訴你們，你們要痛哭哀號，世人卻要歡喜；你們要憂愁，但你們的憂愁要變為喜樂。 21 婦人生產的時候會有憂愁，因為她的時候到了；但生了孩子以後，就不再記住那痛苦了，因為歡喜有一個人生到世上來。 22 現在你們也有憂愁；但我要再見你們，你們的心就會喜樂，你們的喜樂是沒有人能夠奪去的。 23 到了那天，你們甚麼也不會問我了。我實實在在告訴你們，你們奉我的名無論向父求甚麼，他必定賜給你們。 24 你們向來沒有奉我的名求甚麼；現在你們祈求，就必定得著，讓你們的喜樂滿溢。
耶穌已經勝過世界
25 “我用譬喻對你們說了這些事，時候要到，我不再用譬喻對你們說了，而是把關於父的事明明白白告訴你們。 26 到了那天，你們要奉我的名祈求，我不是說我要為你們請求父； 27 父自己愛你們，因為你們已經愛我，並且信我是從 神那裡來的。 28 我從父那裡來，到了這世界；我又離開這世界，到父那裡去。” 29 門徒說：“你看，現在你是明說，不是用譬喻說了。 30 現在我們知道你是無所不知的，不需要人向你發問。因此，我們信你是從 神那裡來的。” 31 耶穌對他們說：“現在你們信嗎？ 32 看哪，時候要到，而且已經到了，你們要分散，各人到自己的地方去，只留下我獨自一個人。其實我不是獨自一個人，因為有父與我同在。 33 我把這些事告訴你們，是要使你們在我裡面有平安。在世上你們有患難，但你們放心，我已經勝了這世界。”

16 “ये बातें मैंने इसलिये तुमसे कही हैं कि तुम्हारा विश्वास न डगमगा जाये। 2 वे तुम्हें आराधनालयों से निकाल देंगे। वास्तव में वह समय आ रहा है जब तुम में से किसी को भी मार कर हर कोई सोचेगा कि वह परमेश्वर की सेवा कर रहा है। 3 वे ऐसा इसलिए करेंगे कि वे न तो परम पिता को जानते हैं और न ही मुझे। 4 किन्तु मैंने तुमसे यह इसलिये कहा है ताकि जब उनका समय आये तो तुम्हें याद रहे कि मैंने उनके विषय में तुमको बता दिया था।
पवित्र आत्मा के कार्य
“आरम्भ में ये बातें मैंने तुम्हें नहीं बतायी थीं क्योंकि मैं तुम्हारे साथ था। 5 किन्तु अब मैं उसके पास जा रहा हूँ जिसने मुझे भेजा है और तुममें से मुझ से कोई नहीं पूछेगा, ‘तू कहाँ जा रहा है?’ 6 क्योंकि मैंने तुम्हें ये बातें बता दी हैं, तुम्हारे हृदय शोक से भर गये हैं। 7 किन्तु मैं तुम्हें सत्य कहता हूँ इसमें तुम्हारा भला है कि मैं जा रहा हूँ। क्योंकि यदि मैं न जाऊँ तो सहायक तुम्हारे पास नहीं आयेगा। किन्तु यदि मैं चला जाता हूँ तो मैं उसे तुम्हारे पास भेज दूँगा।
8 “और जब वह आयेगा तो पाप, धार्मिकता और न्याय के विषय में जगत के संदेह दूर करेगा। 9 पाप के विषय में इसलिये कि वे मुझ में विश्वास नहीं रखते, 10 धार्मिकता के विषय में इसलिये कि अब मैं परम पिता के पास जा रहा हूँ। और तुम मुझे अब और अधिक नहीं देखोगे। 11 न्याय के विषय में इसलिये कि इस जगत के शासक को दोषी ठहराया जा चुका है।
12 “मुझे अभी तुमसे बहुत सी बातें कहनी हैं किन्तु तुम अभी उन्हें सह नहीं सकते। 13 किन्तु जब सत्य का आत्मा आयेगा तो वह तुम्हें पूर्ण सत्य की राह दिखायेगा क्योंकि वह अपनी ओर से कुछ नहीं कहेगा। वह जो कुछ सुनेगा वही बतायेगा। और जो कुछ होने वाला है उसको प्रकट करेगा। 14 वह मेरी महिमा करेगा क्योंकि जो मेरा है उसे लेकर वह तुम्हें बतायेगा। हर वस्तु जो पिता की है, वह मेरी है। 15 इसीलिए मैंने कहा है कि जो कुछ मेरा है वह उसे लेगा और तुम्हें बतायेगा।
शोक आनन्द में बदल जायेगा
16 “कुछ ही समय बाद तुम मुझे और अधिक नहीं देख पाओगे। और थोड़े समय बाद तुम मुझे फिर देखोगे।”
17 तब उसके कुछ शिष्यों ने आपस में कहा, “यह क्या है जो वह हमें बता रहा है, ‘थोड़ी देर बाद तुम मुझे नहीं देख पाओगे’ और ‘थोड़े समय बाद तुम मुझे फिर देखोगे?’ और ‘मैं परम पिता के पास जा रहा हूँ।’” 18 फिर वे कहने लगे, “यह ‘थोड़ी देर बाद’ क्या है? जिसके बारे में वह बता रहा है। वह क्या कह रहा है हम समझ नहीं रहे हैं।”
19 यीशु समझ गया कि वे उससे प्रश्न करना चाहते हैं। इसलिये उसने उनसे कहा, “क्या तुम मैंने यह जो कहा है, उस पर आपस में सोच-विचार कर रहे हो, ‘कुछ ही समय बाद तुम मुझे और अधिक नही देख पाओगे।’ और ‘फिर थोड़े समय बाद तुम मुझे देखोगे?’ 20 मैं तुम्हें सत्य कहता हूँ, तुम विलाप करोगे और रोओगे किन्तु यह जगत प्रसन्न होगा। तुम्हें शोक होगा किन्तु तुम्हारा शोक आनन्द में बदल जायेगा।
21 “जब कोई स्त्री जनने लगती है, तब उसे पीड़ा होती है क्योंकि उसकी पीड़ा की घड़ी आ चुकी होती है। किन्तु जब वह बच्चा जन चुकी होती है तो इस आनन्द से कि एक व्यक्ति इस संसार में पैदा हुआ है वह आनन्दित होती है और अपनी पीड़ा को भूल जाती है। 22 सो तुम सब भी इस समय वैसे ही दुःखी हो किन्तु मैं तुमसे फिर मिलूँगा और तुम्हारे हृदय आनन्दित होंगे। और तुम्हारे आनन्द को तुमसे कोई छीन नहीं सकेगा। 23 उस दिन तुम मुझसे कोई प्रश्न नहीं पूछोगे। मैं तुमसे सत्य कहता हूँ मेरे नाम में परम पिता से तुम जो कुछ भी माँगोगे वह उसे तुम्हें देगा। 24 अब तक मेरे नाम में तुमने कुछ नहीं माँगा है। माँगो, तुम पाओगे। ताकि तुम्हें भरपूर आनन्द हो।
जगत पर विजय
25 “मैंने ये बातें तुम्हें दृष्टान्त देकर बतायी हैं। वह समय आ रहा है जब मैं तुमसे दृष्टान्त दे-देकर और अधिक समय बात नहीं करूँगा। बल्कि परम पिता के विषय में खोल कर तुम्हें बताऊँगा। 26 उस दिन तुम मेरे नाम में माँगोगे और मैं तुमसे यह नहीं कहता कि तुम्हारी ओर से मैं परम पिता से प्रार्थना करूँगा। 27 परम पिता स्वयं तुम्हें प्यार करता है क्योंकि तुमने मुझे प्यार किया है। और यह माना है कि मैं परम पिता से आया हूँ। 28 मैं परम पिता से प्रकट हुआ और इस जगत में आया। और अब मैं इस जगत को छोड़कर परम पिता के पास जा रहा हूँ।”
29 उसके शिष्यों ने कहा, “देख अब तू बिना किसी दृष्टान्त को खोल कर बता रहा है। 30 अब हम समझ गये हैं कि तू सब कुछ जानता है। अब तुझे अपेक्षा नहीं है कि कोई तुझसे प्रश्न पूछे। इससे हमें यह विश्वास होता है कि तू परमेश्वर से प्रकट हुआ है।”
31 यीशु ने इस पर उनसे कहा, “क्या तुम्हें अब विश्वास हुआ है? 32 सुनो, समय आ रहा है, बल्कि आ ही गया है जब तुम सब तितर-बितर हो जाओगे और तुम में से हर कोई अपने-अपने घर लौट जायेगा और मुझे अकेला छोड़ देगा किन्तु मैं अकेला नहीं हूँ क्योंकि मेरा परम पिता मेरे साथ है।
33 “मैंने ये बातें तुमसे इसलिये कहीं कि मेरे द्वारा तुम्हें शांति मिले। जगत में तुम्हें यातना मिली है किन्तु साहस रखो, मैंने जगत को जीत लिया है।”

16 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

16 Estas cosas os he dicho(A) para que no tengáis tropiezo[a](B). 2 Os expulsarán de las sinagogas(C); pero viene la hora(D) cuando cualquiera que os mate pensará que así rinde un servicio a Dios(E). 3 Y harán estas cosas porque no han conocido ni al Padre ni a mí(F). 4 Pero os he dicho estas cosas para que cuando llegue la[b] hora(G), os acordéis de que ya os había hablado de ellas[c]. Y no os dije estas cosas al principio(H), porque yo estaba con vosotros. 5 Pero ahora voy al que me envió(I), y ninguno de vosotros me pregunta: «¿Adónde vas(J)?». 6 Mas porque os he dicho estas cosas, la tristeza ha llenado vuestro corazón(K).
La obra del Espíritu Santo
7 Pero yo os digo la verdad: os conviene que yo me vaya; porque si no me voy, el Consolador[d](L) no vendrá a vosotros; pero si me voy, os lo enviaré(M). 8 Y cuando Él venga, convencerá[e] al mundo de pecado, de justicia y de juicio; 9 de pecado, porque no creen en mí(N); 10 de justicia(O), porque yo voy al Padre(P) y no me veréis más; 11 y de juicio, porque el príncipe de este mundo ha sido juzgado(Q). 12 Aún tengo muchas cosas que deciros, pero ahora no las podéis soportar. 13 Pero cuando Él, el Espíritu de verdad(R), venga, os guiará a toda la verdad, porque no hablará por su propia cuenta, sino que hablará todo lo que oiga, y os hará saber(S) lo que habrá de venir. 14 El me glorificará(T), porque tomará de lo mío y os lo hará saber. 15 Todo lo que tiene el Padre es mío(U); por eso dije que Él toma de lo mío y os lo hará saber. 16 Un poco más(V), y ya no me veréis(W); y de nuevo un poco, y me veréis(X). 17 Entonces algunos de sus discípulos se decían unos a otros: ¿Qué es esto que nos dice: «Un poco más, y no me veréis, y de nuevo un poco, y me veréis(Y)» y «Porque yo voy al Padre(Z)»? 18 Por eso decían: ¿Qué es esto que dice: «Un poco»? No sabemos de qué habla. 19 Jesús sabía que querían preguntarle(AA), y les dijo: ¿Estáis discutiendo entre vosotros sobre esto, porque dije: «Un poco más, y no me veréis, y de nuevo un poco, y me veréis»? 20 En verdad, en verdad os digo que lloraréis y os lamentaréis(AB), pero el mundo se alegrará; estaréis tristes, pero vuestra tristeza se convertirá en alegría(AC). 21 Cuando la mujer está para dar a luz, tiene aflicción(AD), porque ha llegado su hora; pero cuando da a luz al niño, ya no se acuerda de la angustia, por la alegría de que un niño[f] haya nacido en el mundo. 22 Por tanto, ahora vosotros tenéis también aflicción(AE); pero yo os veré otra vez(AF), y vuestro corazón se alegrará, y nadie os quitará vuestro gozo. 23 En aquel día(AG) no me preguntaréis nada(AH). En verdad, en verdad os digo: si pedís algo al Padre, os lo dará en mi nombre(AI). 24 Hasta ahora nada habéis pedido en mi nombre(AJ); pedid y recibiréis, para que vuestro gozo sea completo(AK).
25 Estas cosas os he hablado en lenguaje figurado[g](AL); viene el tiempo[h](AM) cuando no os hablaré más en lenguaje figurado[i], sino que os hablaré del Padre claramente. 26 En ese día(AN) pediréis(AO) en mi nombre, y no os digo que yo rogaré al Padre por vosotros, 27 pues el Padre mismo os ama, porque vosotros me habéis amado(AP) y habéis creído(AQ) que yo salí del Padre(AR). 28 Salí del Padre(AS) y he venido al mundo; de nuevo, dejo el mundo y voy al Padre(AT). 29 Sus discípulos le dijeron*: He aquí que ahora hablas claramente y no usas lenguaje figurado[j](AU). 30 Ahora entendemos que tú sabes todas las cosas, y no necesitas que nadie te pregunte; por esto creemos(AV) que tú viniste de Dios(AW). 31 Jesús les respondió: ¿Ahora creéis? 32 Mirad, la hora viene(AX), y ya ha llegado, en que seréis esparcidos(AY), cada uno por su lado[k](AZ), y me dejaréis solo; y sin embargo no estoy solo(BA), porque el Padre está conmigo. 33 Estas cosas os he hablado para que en mí tengáis paz(BB). En el mundo tenéis tribulación(BC); pero confiad[l](BD), yo he vencido al mundo(BE).

16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”
