16 “我把这些事告诉了你们，使你们不致后退。 2 人要把你们赶出会堂；并且时候要到，所有要杀害你们的人，以为这样就是事奉　神。 3 他们要作这些事，因为他们不认识父，也不认识我。 4 我把这些事告诉了你们，让你们到了那个时候，可以想起我告诉过你们了。

圣灵的工作

“我起初没有把这些事告诉你们，因为我跟你们在一起。 5 现在我要到那差我来的那里去，你们中间并没有人问：‘你到哪里去？’ 6 然而因为我把这些事告诉了你们，你们心里就充满忧愁。 7 但我要把实情告诉你们，我去是对你们有益的。如果我不去，保惠师就不会到你们这里来；我若去了，就会差他到你们这里来。 8 他来了，就要在罪、在义、在审判各方面指证世人的罪。 9 在罪方面，是因为他们不信我； 10 在义方面，是因为我到父那里去，你们就再看不见我； 11 在审判方面，是因为这世界的统治者已经受了审判。

12 “我还有许多事要告诉你们，可是你们现在担当不了； 13 只等真理的灵来了，他要引导你们进入一切真理。他不是凭着自己说话，而是把他听见的都说出来，并且要把将来的事告诉你们。 14 他要荣耀我，因为他要把从我那里所领受的告诉你们。 15 父所有的一切，都是我的；所以我说，他要把从我那里所领受的告诉你们。

你们的忧愁要变为喜乐

16 “不久，你们不会再看见我；再过不久，你们还要看见我。” 17 于是他的门徒中有几个彼此说：“他对我们说：‘不久，你们不会看见我；再过不久，你们还要看见我。’又说：‘因为我到父那里去。’这是甚么意思呢？” 18 他们又说：“他所说的‘不久’，是甚么意思呢？我们不晓得他在讲甚么。” 19 耶稣知道他们想问他，就说：“我所说的‘不久，你们不会看见我；再过不久，你们还要看见我’，你们为了这话彼此议论吗？ 20 我实实在在告诉你们，你们要痛哭哀号，世人却要欢喜；你们要忧愁，但你们的忧愁要变为喜乐。 21 妇人生产的时候会有忧愁，因为她的时候到了；但生了孩子以后，就不再记住那痛苦了，因为欢喜有一个人生到世上来。 22 现在你们也有忧愁；但我要再见你们，你们的心就会喜乐，你们的喜乐是没有人能够夺去的。 23 到了那天，你们甚么也不会问我了。我实实在在告诉你们，你们奉我的名无论向父求甚么，他必定赐给你们。 24 你们向来没有奉我的名求甚么；现在你们祈求，就必定得着，让你们的喜乐满溢。

耶稣已经胜过世界

25 “我用譬喻对你们说了这些事，时候要到，我不再用譬喻对你们说了，而是把关于父的事明明白白告诉你们。 26 到了那天，你们要奉我的名祈求，我不是说我要为你们请求父； 27 父自己爱你们，因为你们已经爱我，并且信我是从　神那里来的。 28 我从父那里来，到了这世界；我又离开这世界，到父那里去。” 29 门徒说：“你看，现在你是明说，不是用譬喻说了。 30 现在我们知道你是无所不知的，不需要人向你发问。因此，我们信你是从　神那里来的。” 31 耶稣对他们说：“现在你们信吗？ 32 看哪，时候要到，而且已经到了，你们要分散，各人到自己的地方去，只留下我独自一个人。其实我不是独自一个人，因为有父与我同在。 33 我把这些事告诉你们，是要使你们在我里面有平安。在世上你们有患难，但你们放心，我已经胜了这世界。”

16 Estas cosas os he dicho(A) para que no tengáis tropiezo[a](B). 2 Os expulsarán de las sinagogas(C); pero viene la hora(D) cuando cualquiera que os mate pensará que así rinde un servicio a Dios(E). 3 Y harán estas cosas porque no han conocido ni al Padre ni a mí(F). 4 Pero os he dicho estas cosas para que cuando llegue la[b] hora(G), os acordéis de que ya os había hablado de ellas[c]. Y no os dije estas cosas al principio(H), porque yo estaba con vosotros. 5 Pero ahora voy al que me envió(I), y ninguno de vosotros me pregunta: «¿Adónde vas(J)?». 6 Mas porque os he dicho estas cosas, la tristeza ha llenado vuestro corazón(K).

7 Pero yo os digo la verdad: os conviene que yo me vaya; porque si no me voy, el Consolador[d](L) no vendrá a vosotros; pero si me voy, os lo enviaré(M). 8 Y cuando Él venga, convencerá[e] al mundo de pecado, de justicia y de juicio; 9 de pecado, porque no creen en mí(N); 10 de justicia(O), porque yo voy al Padre(P) y no me veréis más; 11 y de juicio, porque el príncipe de este mundo ha sido juzgado(Q). 12 Aún tengo muchas cosas que deciros, pero ahora no las podéis soportar. 13 Pero cuando Él, el Espíritu de verdad(R), venga, os guiará a toda la verdad, porque no hablará por su propia cuenta, sino que hablará todo lo que oiga, y os hará saber(S) lo que habrá de venir. 14 El me glorificará(T), porque tomará de lo mío y os lo hará saber. 15 Todo lo que tiene el Padre es mío(U); por eso dije que Él toma de lo mío y os lo hará saber. 16 Un poco más(V), y ya no me veréis(W); y de nuevo un poco, y me veréis(X). 17 Entonces algunos de sus discípulos se decían unos a otros: ¿Qué es esto que nos dice: «Un poco más, y no me veréis, y de nuevo un poco, y me veréis(Y)» y «Porque yo voy al Padre(Z)»? 18 Por eso decían: ¿Qué es esto que dice: «Un poco»? No sabemos de qué habla. 19 Jesús sabía que querían preguntarle(AA), y les dijo: ¿Estáis discutiendo entre vosotros sobre esto, porque dije: «Un poco más, y no me veréis, y de nuevo un poco, y me veréis»? 20 En verdad, en verdad os digo que lloraréis y os lamentaréis(AB), pero el mundo se alegrará; estaréis tristes, pero vuestra tristeza se convertirá en alegría(AC). 21 Cuando la mujer está para dar a luz, tiene aflicción(AD), porque ha llegado su hora; pero cuando da a luz al niño, ya no se acuerda de la angustia, por la alegría de que un niño[f] haya nacido en el mundo. 22 Por tanto, ahora vosotros tenéis también aflicción(AE); pero yo os veré otra vez(AF), y vuestro corazón se alegrará, y nadie os quitará vuestro gozo. 23 En aquel día(AG) no me preguntaréis nada(AH). En verdad, en verdad os digo: si pedís algo al Padre, os lo dará en mi nombre(AI). 24 Hasta ahora nada habéis pedido en mi nombre(AJ); pedid y recibiréis, para que vuestro gozo sea completo(AK).

25 Estas cosas os he hablado en lenguaje figurado[g](AL); viene el tiempo[h](AM) cuando no os hablaré más en lenguaje figurado[i], sino que os hablaré del Padre claramente. 26 En ese día(AN) pediréis(AO) en mi nombre, y no os digo que yo rogaré al Padre por vosotros, 27 pues el Padre mismo os ama, porque vosotros me habéis amado(AP) y habéis creído(AQ) que yo salí del Padre(AR). 28 Salí del Padre(AS) y he venido al mundo; de nuevo, dejo el mundo y voy al Padre(AT). 29 Sus discípulos le dijeron*: He aquí que ahora hablas claramente y no usas lenguaje figurado[j](AU). 30 Ahora entendemos que tú sabes todas las cosas, y no necesitas que nadie te pregunte; por esto creemos(AV) que tú viniste de Dios(AW). 31 Jesús les respondió: ¿Ahora creéis? 32 Mirad, la hora viene(AX), y ya ha llegado, en que seréis esparcidos(AY), cada uno por su lado[k](AZ), y me dejaréis solo; y sin embargo no estoy solo(BA), porque el Padre está conmigo. 33 Estas cosas os he hablado para que en mí tengáis paz(BB). 16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”

Chapter 16

1 “I have told you this so that you may not fall away. 2 They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour[a] is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.(A) 3 They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me.(B) 4 I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you.(C)

Jesus’ Departure; Coming of the Advocate.[b] “I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me,[c] ‘Where are you going?’(D) 6 But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.(E) But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 [d]And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: 9 sin, because they do not believe in me;(F) 10 righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.(G)

12 “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. 13 [e]But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.(H) He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

16 “A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me.”(I) 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What does this mean that he is saying to us, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they said, “What is this ‘little while’ [of which he speaks]? We do not know what he means.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are you discussing with one another what I said, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.(J) 21 When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.(K) 22 So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.(L) 23 On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.(M) 24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.(O) 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(P) 29 His disciples said, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. 30 Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.”[g] 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? 32 Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered[h] to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.(Q) 33 I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”(R)

He leads believers to see (a) that the basic sin was and is refusal to believe in Jesus; (b) that, although Jesus was found guilty and apparently died in disgrace, in reality righteousness has triumphed, for Jesus has returned to his Father; (c) finally, that it is the ruler of this world, Satan, who has been condemned through Jesus’ death (Jn 12:32).

  7. 16:30 The reference is seemingly to the fact that Jesus could anticipate their question in Jn 16:19. The disciples naively think they have the full understanding that is the climax of “the hour” of Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension (Jn 16:25), but the only part of the hour that is at hand for them is their share in the passion (Jn 16:32).
  8. 16:32 You will be scattered: cf. Mk 14:27 and Mt 26:31, where both cite Zec 13:7 about the sheep being dispersed.
