Land Still to Be Taken

13 When Joshua had grown old,^(A) the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.

²“This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines^(B) and Geshurites,^(C) ³from the Shihor River^(D) on the east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron^(E) on the north, all of it counted as Canaanite though held by the five Philistine rulers^(F) in Gaza, Ashdod,^(G) Ashkelon,^(H) Gath and Ekron; the territory of the Avvites^(I) ⁴on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek^(J) and the border of the Amorites;^(K) ⁵the area of Byblos;^(L) and all Lebanon^(M) to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon^(N) to Lebo Hamath.^(O)

⁶“As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim,^(P) that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out^(Q) before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you,^(R) ⁷and divide it as an inheritance^(S) among the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

⁸The other half of Manasseh,^[a] the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the Lord, had assigned^(T) it to them.^(U)

⁹It extended from Aroer^(V) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau^(W) of Medeba as far as Dibon,^(X) ¹⁰and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,^(Y) out to the border of the Ammonites.^(Z) ¹¹It also included Gilead,^(AA) the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah^(AB)— ¹²that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan,^(AC) who had reigned in Ashtaroth^(AD) and Edrei.^(AE) (He was the last of the Rephaites.^(AF)) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land.^(AG) ¹³But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur^(AH) and Maakah,^(AI) so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.^(AJ)

¹⁴But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.^(AK)

¹⁵This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:

¹⁶The territory from Aroer^(AL) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba^(AM) ¹⁷to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau,^(AN) including Dibon,^(AO) Bamoth Baal,^(AP) Beth Baal Meon,^(AQ) ¹⁸Jahaz,^(AR) Kedemoth,^(AS) Mephaath,^(AT) ¹⁹Kiriathaim,^(AU) Sibmah,^(AV) Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, ²⁰Beth Peor,^(AW) the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— ²¹all the towns on the plateau^(AX) and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs,^(AY) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba^(AZ)—princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. ²²In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor,^(BA) who practiced divination.^(BB) ²³The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.^(BC)

²⁴This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Gad, according to its clans:

²⁵The territory of Jazer,^(BD) all the towns of Gilead^(BE) and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;^(BF) ²⁶and from Heshbon^(BG) to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim^(BH) to the territory of Debir;^(BI) ²⁷and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah,^(BJ) Sukkoth^(BK) and Zaphon^(BL) with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee^[b]^(BM)). ²⁸These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites,^(BN) according to their clans.

²⁹This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:

³⁰The territory extending from Mahanaim^(BO) and including all of Bashan,^(BP) the entire realm of Og king of Bashan^(BQ)—all the settlements of Jair^(BR) in Bashan, sixty towns, ³¹half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan).^(BS) This was for the descendants of Makir^(BT) son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans.^(BU)

³²This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab^(BV) across the Jordan east of Jericho.^(BW) ³³But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance;^(BX) the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance,^(BY) as he promised them.^(BZ)

Division of the Land West of the Jordan

14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance^(CA) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar^(CB) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel^(CC) allotted^(CD) to them.^(CE) ²Their inheritances were assigned by lot^(CF) to the nine and a half tribes,^(CG) as the Lord had commanded through Moses. ³Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan^(CH) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,^(CI) ⁴for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.^(CJ) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.^(CK) ⁵So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.^(CL)

Allotment for Caleb

⁶Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,^(CM) and Caleb son of Jephunneh^(CN) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God^(CO) at Kadesh Barnea^(CP) about you and me.^(CQ) ⁷I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea^(CR) to explore the land.^(CS) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,^(CT) ⁸but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.^(CU) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.^(CV) ⁹So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance^(CW) and that of your children^(CX) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’^[c]

¹⁰“Now then, just as the Lord promised,^(CY) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved^(CZ) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!^(DA) ¹¹I am still as strong^(DB) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous^(DC) to go out to battle now as I was then. ¹²Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.^(DD) You yourself heard then that the Anakites^(DE) were there and their cities were large and fortified,^(DF) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

¹³Then Joshua blessed^(DG) Caleb son of Jephunneh^(DH) and gave him Hebron^(DI) as his inheritance.^(DJ) ¹⁴So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.^(DK) ¹⁵(Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba^(DL) after Arba,^(DM) who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)

Then the land had rest^(DN) from war.

Allotment for Judah^(DO)

15 The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom,^(DP) to the Desert of Zin^(DQ) in the extreme south.^(DR)

²Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea,^(DS) ³crossed south of Scorpion Pass,^(DT) continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea.^(DU) Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka. ⁴It then passed along to Azmon^(DV) and joined the Wadi of Egypt,^(DW) ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their^[d] southern boundary.

⁵The eastern boundary^(DX) is the Dead Sea^(DY) as far as the mouth of the Jordan.

The northern boundary^(DZ) started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, ⁶went up to Beth Hoglah^(EA) and continued north of Beth Arabah^(EB) to the Stone of Bohan^(EC) son of Reuben. ⁷The boundary then went up to Debir^(ED) from the Valley of Achor^(EE) and turned north to Gilgal,^(EF) which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh^(EG) and came out at En Rogel.^(EH) ⁸Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom^(EI) along the southern slope of the Jebusite^(EJ) city (that is, Jerusalem^(EK)). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley^(EL) at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.^(EM) ⁹From the hilltop the boundary headed toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah,^(EN) came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down toward Baalah^(EO) (that is, Kiriath Jearim).^(EP) ¹⁰Then it curved westward from Baalah^(EQ) to Mount Seir,^(ER) ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh^(ES) and crossed to Timnah.^(ET) ¹¹It went to the northern slope of Ekron,^(EU) turned toward Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah^(EV) and reached Jabneel.^(EW) The boundary ended at the sea.

¹²The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.^(EX)

These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

¹³In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb^(EY) son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba^(EZ), that is, Hebron.^(FA) (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)^(FB) ¹⁴From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites^(FC)—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai,^(FD) the sons of Anak.^(FE) ¹⁵From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). ¹⁶And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah^(FF) in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” ¹⁷Othniel^(FG) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.

¹⁸One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him^[e] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”

¹⁹She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev,^(FH) give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.^(FI)

²⁰This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, according to its clans:

²¹The southernmost towns of the tribe of Judah in the Negev^(FJ) toward the boundary of Edom were:

Kabzeel,^(FK) Eder,^(FL) Jagur, ²²Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, ²³Kedesh,^(FM) Hazor,^(FN) Ithnan, ²⁴Ziph,^(FO) Telem, Bealoth, ²⁵Hazor Hadattah, Kerioth Hezron (that is, Hazor),^(FP) ²⁶Amam, Shema, Moladah,^(FQ) ²⁷Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet, ²⁸Hazar Shual,^(FR) Beersheba,^(FS) Biziothiah, ²⁹Baalah,^(FT) Iyim, Ezem,^(FU) ³⁰Eltolad,^(FV) Kesil, Hormah,^(FW) ³¹Ziklag,^(FX) Madmannah,^(FY) Sansannah, ³²Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain^(FZ) and Rimmon^(GA)—a total of twenty-nine towns and their villages.

³³In the western foothills:

Eshtaol,^(GB) Zorah,^(GC) Ashnah,^(GD) ³⁴Zanoah,^(GE) En Gannim,^(GF) Tappuah,^(GG) Enam, ³⁵Jarmuth,^(GH) Adullam,^(GI) Sokoh,^(GJ) Azekah,^(GK) ³⁶Shaaraim,^(GL) Adithaim and Gederah^(GM) (or Gederothaim)^[f]—fourteen towns and their villages.

³⁷Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad, ³⁸Dilean, Mizpah,^(GN) Joktheel,^(GO) ³⁹Lachish,^(GP) Bozkath,^(GQ) Eglon,^(GR) ⁴⁰Kabbon, Lahmas, Kitlish, ⁴¹Gederoth,^(GS) Beth Dagon,^(GT) Naamah and Makkedah^(GU)—sixteen towns and their villages.

⁴²Libnah,^(GV) Ether, Ashan,^(GW) ⁴³Iphtah, Ashnah,^(GX) Nezib, ⁴⁴Keilah,^(GY) Akzib^(GZ) and Mareshah^(HA)—nine towns and their villages.

⁴⁵Ekron,^(HB) with its surrounding settlements and villages; ⁴⁶west of Ekron, all that were in the vicinity of Ashdod,^(HC) together with their villages; ⁴⁷Ashdod,^(HD) its surrounding settlements and villages; and Gaza, its settlements and villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt^(HE) and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.^(HF)

⁴⁸In the hill country:

Shamir,^(HG) Jattir,^(HH) Sokoh,^(HI) ⁴⁹Dannah, Kiriath Sannah (that is, Debir^(HJ)), ⁵⁰Anab,^(HK) Eshtemoh,^(HL) Anim, ⁵¹Goshen,^(HM) Holon^(HN) and Giloh^(HO)—eleven towns and their villages.

⁵²Arab, Dumah,^(HP) Eshan, ⁵³Janim, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah, ⁵⁴Humtah, Kiriath Arba^(HQ) (that is, Hebron) and Zior—nine towns and their villages.

⁵⁵Maon,^(HR) Carmel,^(HS) Ziph,^(HT) Juttah,^(HU) ⁵⁶Jezreel,^(HV) Jokdeam, Zanoah,^(HW) ⁵⁷Kain, Gibeah^(HX) and Timnah^(HY)—ten towns and their villages.

⁵⁸Halhul, Beth Zur,^(HZ) Gedor,^(IA) ⁵⁹Maarath, Beth Anoth and Eltekon—six towns and their villages.^[g]

⁶⁰Kiriath Baal^(IB) (that is, Kiriath Jearim^(IC)) and Rabbah^(ID)—two towns and their villages.

⁶¹In the wilderness:^(IE)

Beth Arabah,^(IF) Middin, Sekakah, ⁶²Nibshan, the City of Salt and En Gedi^(IG)—six towns and their villages.

⁶³Judah could not^(IH) dislodge the Jebusites^(II), who were living in Jerusalem;^(IJ) to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.^(IK)

Remaining Land to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua ^(A)was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: “You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed. ²^(B)This is the land that yet remains: ^(C)all the territory of the Philistines and all ^(D)that of the Geshurites, ³^(E)from Sihor, which is east of Egypt, as far as the border of Ekron northward (which is counted as Canaanite); the ^(F)five lords of the Philistines—the Gazites, the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also ^(G)the Avites; ⁴from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians ^(H)as far as Aphek, to the border of ^(I)the Amorites; ⁵the land of ^(J)the ^[a]Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, ^(K)from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath; ⁶all the inhabitants of the mountains from Lebanon as far as ^(L)the ^[b]Brook Misrephoth, and all the Sidonians—them ^(M)I will drive out from before the children of Israel; only ^(N)divide^[c] it by lot to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you. ⁷Now therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Land Divided East of the Jordan

⁸With the other half-tribe the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, ^(O)which Moses had given them, ^(P)beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord had given them: ⁹from Aroer which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and the town that is in the midst of the ravine, ^(Q)and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon; ¹⁰^(R)all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the children of Ammon; ¹¹^(S)Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salcah; ¹²all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, who remained of ^(T)the remnant of the giants; ^(U)for Moses had ^[d]defeated and ^[e]cast out these.

¹³Nevertheless the children of Israel ^(V)did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites, but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

¹⁴^(W)Only to the tribe of Levi he had given ^[f]no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, ^(X)as He said to them.

The Land of Reuben

¹⁵^(Y)And Moses had given to the tribe of the children of Reuben an inheritance according to their families. ¹⁶Their territory was ^(Z)from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, ^(AA)and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, ^(AB)and all the plain by Medeba; ¹⁷^(AC)Heshbon and all its cities that are in the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, ¹⁸^(AD)Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath, ¹⁹^(AE)Kirjathaim, ^(AF)Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the mountain of the valley, ²⁰Beth Peor, ^(AG)the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— ²¹^(AH)all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, ^(AI)whom Moses had struck ^(AJ)with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon dwelling in the country. ²²The children of Israel also killed with the sword ^(AK)Balaam the son of Beor, the ^[g]soothsayer, among those who were killed by them. ²³And the border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. The Land of Gad

²⁴^(AL)Moses also had given an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families. ²⁵^(AM)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, ^(AN)and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, which is before ^(AO)Rabbah, ²⁶and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir, ²⁷and in the valley ^(AP)Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, ^(AQ)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border, as far as the edge ^(AR)of the ^[h]Sea of Chinnereth, on the other side of the Jordan eastward. ²⁸This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Half the Tribe of Manasseh (East)

²⁹^(AS)Moses also had given an inheritance to half the tribe of Manasseh; it was for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families: ³⁰Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and ^(AT)all the towns of Jair which are in Bashan, sixty cities; ³¹half of Gilead, and ^(AU)Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the ^(AV)children of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their families.

³²These are the areas which Moses had ^[i]distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward. ³³^(AW)But to the tribe of Levi Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, ^(AX)as He had said to them.

The Land Divided West of the Jordan

14 These are the areas which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, ^(AY)which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed as an inheritance to them. ²Their inheritance was ^(AZ)by lot, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. ³^(BA)For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe on the other side of the Jordan; but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them. ⁴For ^(BB)the children of Joseph were two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim. And they gave no part to the Levites in the land, except ^(BC)cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for their livestock and their property. ⁵^(BD)As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

Caleb Inherits Hebron

⁶Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the ^(BE)Kenizzite said to him: “You know ^(BF)the word which the Lord said to Moses the man of God concerning ^(BG)you and me in Kadesh Barnea. ⁷I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord ^(BH)sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. ⁸Nevertheless ^(BI)my brethren who went up with me made the ^[j]heart of the people melt, but I wholly ^(BJ)followed the Lord my God. ⁹So Moses swore on that day, saying, ^(BK)‘Surely the land ^(BL)where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ ¹⁰And now, behold, the Lord has kept me ^(BM)alive, ^(BN)as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel ^[k]wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. ¹¹^(BO)As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both ^(BP)for going out and for coming in. ¹²Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how ^(BQ)the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. ^(BR)It may be that the Lord will be with me, and ^(BS)I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

¹³And Joshua ^(BT)blessed him, ^(BU)and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. ¹⁴^(BV)Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he ^(BW)wholly followed the Lord God of Israel. ¹⁵And ^(BX)the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjath Arba (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim).

^(BY)Then the land had rest from war.

The Land of Judah

15 So this was the ^[l]lot of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families:

^(BZ)The border of Edom at the ^(CA)Wilderness of Zin southward was the extreme southern boundary. ²And their ^(CB)southern border began at the shore of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. ³Then it went out to the southern side of ^(CC)the Ascent of Akrabbim, passed along to Zin, ascended on the south side of Kadesh Barnea, passed along to Hezron, went up to Adar, and went around to Karkaa. ⁴From there it passed ^(CD)toward Azmon and went out to the Brook of Egypt; and the border ended at the sea. This shall be your southern border.

⁵The east border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan.

And the ^(CE)border on the northern quarter began at the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. ⁶The border went up to ^(CF)Beth Hoglah and passed north of Beth Arabah; and the border went up ^(CG)to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. ⁷Then the border went up toward ^(CH)Debir from ^(CI)the Valley of Achor, and it turned northward toward Gilgal, which is before the Ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. The border continued toward the waters of En Shemesh and ended at ^(CJ)En Rogel. ⁸And the border went up ^(CK)by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom to the southern slope of the ^(CL)Jebusite city (which is Jerusalem). The border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the Valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the Valley ^(CM)of ^[m]Rephaim northward. ⁹Then the border went around from the top of the hill to ^(CN)the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and extended to the cities of Mount Ephron. And the border went around ^(CO)to Baalah (which is ^(CP)Kirjath Jearim). ¹⁰Then the border ^[n]turned westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, passed along to the side of Mount Jearim on the north (which is Chesalon), went down to Beth Shemesh, and passed on to ^(CQ)Timnah. ¹¹And the border went out to the side of ^(CR)Ekron northward. Then the border went around to Shicron, passed along to Mount Baalah, and extended to Jabneel; and the border ended at the sea.

¹²The west border was ^(CS)the coastline of the Great Sea. This is the boundary of the children of Judah all around according to their families.

Caleb Occupies Hebron and Debir^(CT)

¹³^(CU)Now to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a share among the children of ^(CV)Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, namely, ^(CW)Kirjath Arba, which is Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). ¹⁴Caleb drove out ^(CX)the three sons of Anak from there: ^(CY)Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak. ¹⁵Then ^(CZ)he went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir (formerly the name of Debir was Kirjath Sepher).

¹⁶^(DA)And Caleb said, “He who ^[o]attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as wife.” ¹⁷So ^(DB)Othniel the ^(DC)son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him ^(DD)Achsah his daughter as wife. ¹⁸^(DE)Now it was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So ^(DF)she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you wish?” ¹⁹She answered, “Give me a ^(DG)blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

The Cities of Judah

²⁰This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families:

Land Still to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua ^(A)was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land ^(B)to possess. ²^(C)This is the land that yet remains: all the ^(D)regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites ³(from the ^(E)Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; ^(F)there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of ^(G)the Avvim, ⁴in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of ^(H)the Amorites, ⁵and the land of the ^(I)Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from ^(J)Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to ^(K)Lebo-hamath, ⁶all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to ^(L)Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. The Inheritance East of the Jordan

⁸With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh^[a] the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, ^(Q)which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: ⁹^(R)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and ^(S)all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; ¹⁰^(T)and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; ¹¹and Gilead, and the ^(U)region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and ^(V)all Bashan to Salecah; ¹²^(W)all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of ^(X)the remnant of the Rephaim); ^(Y)these Moses had struck and driven out. ¹³^(Z)Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

¹⁴^(AA)To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

²⁴Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. ²⁵^(AO)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of ^(AP)Rabbah, ²⁶and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from ^(AQ)Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,^[b] ²⁷and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, ^(AR)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of ^(AS)Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. ²⁸This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.

²⁹And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. ³⁰Their region extended from ^(AT)Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all ^(AU)the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, ³¹and half Gilead, and ^(AV)Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of ^(AW)Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

³²These are the inheritances that Moses distributed ^(AX)in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. ³³^(AY)But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, ^(AZ)just as he said to them.

The Inheritance West of the Jordan

14 These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which ^(BA)Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. ²Their inheritance was ^(BB)by lot, just as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. ³^(BC)For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, ^(BD)but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. ⁴For ^(BE)the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. ⁵The people of Israel did ^(BF)as the Lord commanded Moses; they allotted the land.

Caleb's Request and Inheritance

⁶Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the ^(BG)Kenizzite said to him, “You know ^(BH)what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. ⁷I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord ^(BI)sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. ⁸But ^(BJ)my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God. ⁹And Moses swore on that day, saying, ^(BK)‘Surely the land ^(BL)on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ ¹⁰And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, ^(BM)just as he said, these ^(BN)forty-five years since the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. ¹³Then Joshua ^(BS)blessed him, and he gave ^(BT)Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. ¹⁴Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, ^(BU)because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel. ¹⁵^(BV)Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba.^[c] (Arba^[d] was the greatest man among the Anakim.) ^(BW)And the land had rest from war.

The Allotment for Judah

15 The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward ^(BX)to the boundary of Edom, to ^(BY)the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. ²And their south boundary ran from the end of the ^(BZ)Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. ³It goes out southward of ^(CA)the ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, ⁴passes along to Azmon, goes out by ^(CB)the Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. ⁵And the east boundary is the ^(CC)Salt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. ⁶And the boundary goes up to ^(CD)Beth-hoglah and passes along north of ^(CE)Beth-arabah. And the boundary goes up to ^(CF)the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. ⁷And the boundary goes up to Debir from ^(CG)the Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite ^(CH)the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. And the boundary passes along to the waters of ^(CI)En-shemesh and ends at ^(CJ)En-rogel. ⁸Then the boundary goes up by ^(CK)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite (^(CL)that is, Jerusalem). And the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the Valley ^(CM)of Rephaim. ⁹Then the boundary extends from the top of the mountain ^(CN)to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. Then the boundary bends around to Baalah (^(CO)that is, Kiriath-jearim). ¹⁰And the boundary circles west of Baalah to Mount Seir, passes along to the northern shoulder of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), and goes down to ^(CP)Beth-shemesh and passes along by ^(CQ)Timnah. ¹¹The boundary goes out ^(CR)to the shoulder of the hill north of Ekron, then the boundary bends around to Shikkeron and passes along to Mount ^(CS)Baalah and goes out to Jabneel. ²¹And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.

²²Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them.

²³And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

²⁴And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families.

²⁵And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

³⁰And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

³¹And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.

³²These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.

³³But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.

14 And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.

²By lot was their inheritance, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.

³For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.

⁴For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.

⁵As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.

⁶Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea.

⁷Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.

⁸Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

⁹And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

¹⁰And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

¹¹As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

¹²Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

¹³And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.

¹⁴Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

¹⁵And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

15 This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the uttermost part of the south coast.

²And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looketh southward:

³And it went out to the south side to Maalehacrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended up on the south side unto Kadeshbarnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to Adar, and fetched a compass to Karkaa:

⁴From thence it passed toward Azmon, and went out unto the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that coast were at the sea: this shall be your south coast.

⁵And the east border was the salt sea, even unto the end of Jordan. And their border in the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of Jordan:

⁶And the border went up to Bethhogla, and passed along by the north of Betharabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben:

⁷And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river: and the border passed toward the waters of Enshemesh, and the goings out thereof were at Enrogel:

⁸And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:

⁹And the border was drawn from the top of the hill unto the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border was drawn to Baalah, which is Kirjathjearim:

¹⁰And the border compassed from Baalah westward unto mount Seir, and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim, which is Chesalon, on the north side, and went down to Bethshemesh, and passed on to Timnah:

¹²And the west border was to the great sea, and the coast thereof. This is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families.

¹³And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron.

Caleb’s Request

Territory of Judah

15 Now ^(AO)the lot for the tribe of the sons of Judah according to their families ^[w]reached the ^(AP)border of Edom, southward to the ^(AQ)wilderness of Zin at the extreme south. ²Their southern border was from the lower end of the Salt Sea, from the bay that turns to the south. ³Then it proceeded southward to the ascent of Akrabbim and continued to Zin, then went up by the south of Kadesh-barnea and continued to Hezron, and went up to Addar and turned to Karka. ⁴It ^(AR)continued to Azmon and proceeded to the ^[x]^(AS)brook of Egypt, and the ^[y]border ended at the sea.
