天使与巴兰的驴子
21 巴兰早晨起来，备上驴，与摩押的领袖一同去了。 22 神因为巴兰去就发怒；耶和华的使者站在路上敌挡他。那时他骑着驴，有两个仆人同行。 23 驴看见了耶和华的使者站在路上，手里拿着拔出来的刀，就转离正路，走入田中去；巴兰就打驴，要叫牠转回路上。 24 耶和华的使者站在葡萄园间的窄路上，两边都有围墙。 25 驴看见了耶和华的使者，就紧挤在墙上，把巴兰的脚挤伤了，巴兰又打驴。 26 耶和华的使者又往前行，站在狭窄之处，左右都没有转身的地方。 27 驴看见了耶和华的使者，就卧在巴兰身下；巴兰大怒，就用自己的杖打驴。 28 耶和华开了驴的口，驴就对巴兰说：“我向你作了甚么，你竟打我这三次呢？” 29 巴兰对驴说：“因为你作弄我。但愿我手中有刀，现在就把你杀死。” 30 驴对巴兰说：“我不是你从起初一直所骑的驴吗？我曾惯常向你这样行过吗？”巴兰说：“没有。”
责备巴兰
31 那时，耶和华开了巴兰的眼睛，他就看见耶和华的使者站在路上，手里拿着拔出来的刀，巴兰就低头俯伏在地。 32 耶和华的使者对他说：“你为甚么这三次打你的驴呢？看哪，是我来敌挡你，因为你走的路在我面前邪僻。 33 驴看见了我，就三次从我面前转开；驴若是没有从我面前转开，我早已把你杀了，而留牠活着。” 34 巴兰对耶和华的使者说：“我有罪了，我不知道是你站在路上阻挡我；现在你若是不喜欢我去，我就回去。” 35 耶和华的使者对巴兰说：“你与这些人同去吧，但是你只要说我吩咐你的话。”于是巴兰与巴勒的领袖一同去了。
巴勒迎接巴兰
36 巴勒听见巴兰来了，就出去到摩押的京城迎接他；这城是在亚嫩河旁，在边界的尽头。 37 巴勒对巴兰说：“我不是急切地派人到你那里去请你吗？你为甚么不到我这里来呢？难道我不能使你得尊荣吗？” 38 巴兰对巴勒说：“看哪，我已经来到你这里，现在我怎能说甚么呢？ 神把甚么话放在我口里，我就说甚么。” 39 巴兰与巴勒同行，来到基列．胡琐。 40 巴勒宰了牛羊，送给巴兰和与他在一起的领袖。
41 到了早晨，巴勒带着巴兰上了巴力的高冈；巴兰就从那里观看以色列民的边界。
巴勒和巴兰献祭
23 巴兰对巴勒说：“你要在这里给我筑七座祭坛，给我预备七头公牛，七只公绵羊。” 2 巴勒照着巴兰吩咐的行了；巴勒和巴兰在每座祭坛上献一头公牛和一只公绵羊。 3 巴兰对巴勒说：“你要站在你的燔祭旁边，我要往前去，或者耶和华会来迎见我；他指示我甚么，我必告诉你。”于是巴兰上了一块高地。 4 神迎见巴兰；巴兰对 神说：“我已经预备了七座祭坛，在各座祭坛上献了一头公牛和一只公绵羊。” 5 耶和华把话传给巴兰，又说：“你要回到巴勒那里去，要这样这样说。” 6 他就回到巴勒那里，见他和摩押所有的领袖都站在燔祭旁边。
巴兰第一次预言
7 巴兰就作歌，说：
“巴勒把我从亚兰领出来，
摩押王引我出东山，说：
‘来吧，为我咒骂雅各，
来啊，咒骂以色列。’
8 神没有咒诅的，我怎能咒诅呢？
耶和华没有咒骂的，我怎能咒骂呢？
9 我从高峰观看他们，
从山上眺望他们；
这是独居的民族，
不列在万国之中。
10 谁能数算雅各的灰尘？
谁能计算以色列的四分之一呢？
愿我的死像正直人的死，
愿我之终如正直人之终。”
11 巴勒对巴兰说：“你向我作的是甚么事呢？我领你来咒诅我的仇敌，你反倒给他们祝福。” 12 巴兰回答，说：“耶和华传给我的话，我怎能不谨慎说呢？”
13 巴勒对巴兰说：“请你与我到另一个地方去，从那里你可以看见他们；不过你不能看见他们全部，只能看见他们边界的一部分；在那里你要为我咒诅他们。” 14 于是巴勒带巴兰到了琐腓田，上了毘斯迦山顶，筑了七座祭坛，在每座祭坛上献了一头公牛和一只公绵羊。 15 巴兰对巴勒说：“你要在这里站在你的燔祭旁边，等我到那边去迎见耶和华。” 16 耶和华见了巴兰，把话传给他，说：“你回到巴勒那里去，要这样这样说。” 17 巴兰回到巴勒那里，见他站在自己的燔祭旁边，摩押的领袖也与他在那里。巴勒问巴兰：“耶和华说了甚么话呢？”
巴兰第二次预言
18 巴兰作歌，说：
“巴勒啊，要起来听；
西拨的儿子啊，侧耳听我。
19 神不是人，必不致说谎，
也不是人子，必不致后悔。
他说话，怎能不作？
他发言，怎能不作成？
20 我奉命来祝福；
神要赐福，我不能改变。
21 在雅各中不见罪孽，
在以色列中也不见患难；
耶和华他们的 神与他们同在，
有君王欢呼的声音在他们中间。
22 领他们出埃及的 神，
对他们有如野牛的角。
23 在雅各中没有观兆的，
在以色列中也没有占卜；
到了适当的时候，必有话对雅各和以色列说：
‘ 神为他们行了何等的大事！’
24 这民族起来有如母狮，
挺身好象公狮；
不吃下猎物，不喝被杀的人的血，
决不卧下。”
25 巴勒对巴兰说：“你一点不要咒诅他们，也不要祝福他们。” 26 巴兰回答巴勒说：“我不是告诉过你说：‘耶和华吩咐我的，我都必要遵行’吗？”

Balaam’s Donkey
21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22 But God was very angry(A) when he went, and the angel of the Lord(B) stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword(C) in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it(D) to get it back on the road.
24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.
26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry(E) and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth,(F) and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?(G)”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.(H)”
30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”
“No,” he said.
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes,(I) and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
32 The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.[a] 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now,(J) but I would have spared it.”
34 Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned.(K) I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.”
35 The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.
36 When Balak(L) heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon(M) border, at the edge of his territory. 37 Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?”
38 “Well, I have come to you now,” Balaam replied. “But I can’t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.”(N)
39 Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep,(O) and gave some to Balaam and the officials who were with him. 41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal,(P) and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.(Q)
Balaam’s First Message
23 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams(R) for me.” 2 Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(S)
3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me.(T) Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.
4 God met with him,(U) and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
5 The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth(V) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”(W)
6 So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials.(X) 7 Then Balaam(Y) spoke his message:(Z)
“Balak brought me from Aram,(AA)
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.(AB)
‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel.’(AC)
8 How can I curse
those whom God has not cursed?(AD)
How can I denounce
those whom the Lord has not denounced?(AE)
9 From the rocky peaks I see them,
from the heights I view them.(AF)
I see a people who live apart
and do not consider themselves one of the nations.(AG)
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob(AH)
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,(AI)
and may my final end be like theirs!(AJ)”
11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies,(AK) but you have done nothing but bless them!”(AL)
12 He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”(AM)
Balaam’s Second Message
13 Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place(AN) where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp.(AO) And from there, curse them for me.(AP)” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah,(AQ) and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(AR)
15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”
16 The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth(AS) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
17 So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials.(AT) Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”
18 Then he spoke his message:(AU)
“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.(AV)
19 God is not human,(AW) that he should lie,(AX)
not a human being, that he should change his mind.(AY)
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise(AZ) and not fulfill?
20 I have received a command to bless;(BA)
he has blessed,(BB) and I cannot change it.(BC)
21 “No misfortune is seen in Jacob,(BD)
no misery observed[b] in Israel.(BE)
The Lord their God is with them;(BF)
the shout of the King(BG) is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt;(BH)
they have the strength of a wild ox.(BI)
23 There is no divination against[c] Jacob,
no evil omens(BJ) against[d] Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24 The people rise like a lioness;(BK)
they rouse themselves like a lion(BL)
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood(BM) of its victims.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
26 Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”(BN)
