撒母耳的出生

1 有一个以法莲人名叫以利加拿，住在以法莲山区的拉玛·琐非城。他是苏弗的玄孙、托户的曾孙、以利户的孙子、耶罗罕的儿子。 2 他有两个妻子，一个叫哈娜，一个叫毗尼娜。毗尼娜有儿有女，哈娜却无儿无女。

3 以利加拿每年都从家乡到示罗去敬拜万军之耶和华，献上祭物。当时以利的两个儿子何弗尼和非尼哈在那里做耶和华的祭司。 4 每当献完祭后，以利加拿就会把祭肉分给毗尼娜和她的儿女。 5 但他会给哈娜双份祭肉，因为他爱哈娜，虽然耶和华使她不能生育。 6 毗尼娜见她不能生育，便常常羞辱她、气她。 7 每年来到耶和华的殿时，毗尼娜总是惹她伤心哭泣，以致她吃不下饭。 8 她的丈夫以利加拿对她说：“哈娜，你为什么哭？为什么不吃饭？为什么心里难过？有我不是比有十个儿子更好吗？”

9 一天，他们在示罗吃完饭后，哈娜起来祷告。当时，祭司以利正坐在耶和华殿门口的座位上。 10 哈娜心中愁苦，一边祷告一边伤心地哭泣。 11 她向上帝许愿说：“万军之耶和华啊，如果你眷顾婢女的痛苦，不忘记婢女，赐给婢女一个儿子，我必让他终生事奉你，永不剃他的头[a]。” 12 哈娜在耶和华面前祷告，以利注视着她的嘴唇。 13 哈娜在心中默祷，只动嘴唇，不出声音，以利以为她喝醉了， 14 便对她说：“你要醉到什么时候呢？醒醒酒吧！” 15 哈娜答道：“我主啊，我没有喝醉，我淡酒和烈酒都没有喝。我是心里非常愁苦，在耶和华面前倾诉心事。 16 请不要以为我是堕落的女人，我心中非常悲伤痛苦，所以一直在祷告。” 17 以利说：“你安心地回去吧，愿以色列的上帝答应你的祈求。” 18 哈娜说：“谢谢你恩待婢女。”于是，她就去吃饭，不再愁容满面了。

19 第二天，以利加拿一家清早起来敬拜耶和华，然后回到自己的家乡拉玛。以利加拿与哈娜同房，耶和华顾念哈娜， 20 使她怀孕。她后来生了一个儿子，给孩子取名叫撒母耳，因为她说：“他是我向耶和华求来的。”

21 第二年，以利加拿带全家人前往示罗，向耶和华献年祭并还所许的愿。 22 哈娜没有跟他们同去，她告诉丈夫说：“孩子断奶以后，我会把他带去献给耶和华，让他永远住在那里。” 23 以利加拿说：“就依你的意思吧。愿耶和华成就祂的应许。”于是，她就留在家中哺养孩子，直到孩子断奶。 24 孩子断奶以后，她就把他带到示罗耶和华的殿，并带去三头公牛、十公斤面粉和一袋酒。 25 他们宰了一头公牛后，就把孩子带到以利面前。 26 哈娜说：“我主啊，我敢在你面前起誓，我就是那一次站在你这里向耶和华祈求的妇人。 27 我求耶和华赐给我一个孩子，祂应允了我的祈求。 28 现在，我将他献给耶和华，让他终身事奉耶和华。”

他便在那里敬拜耶和华。

Samuels födelse

1 (A) I Ramatajim-Sofim[a] i Efraims bergsbygd bodde en man som hette Elkana. Han var son till Jeroham, son till Elihu, son till Tohu, son till Suf, en efraimit.[b] 2 Elkana hade två hustrur[c]. Den ena hette Hanna och den andra Peninna.[d] Peninna hade barn, men Hanna hade inga.

3 (B) Elkana gav sig år efter år i väg från sin stad för att tillbe och offra åt Herren Sebaot i Shilo[e], där Elis båda söner Hofni och Pinehas[f] var Herrens präster. 4 (C) Den dag Elkana bar fram sitt offer brukade han ge sin hustru Peninna och alla hennes söner och döttrar var sin del av offret[g]. 5 (D) Men åt Hanna gav han en dubbelt så stor del[h], för han älskade henne även om Herren hade gjort henne ofruktsam. 6 För att provocera henne brukade hennes rival retas mycket med henne, därför att Herren hade gjort henne ofruktsam. 7 Detta pågick år efter år. Varje gång Hanna gick upp till Herrens hus retades Peninna med henne på samma sätt.

Nu grät Hanna och ville inte äta. 8 Då sade hennes man Elkana till henne: ”Hanna, varför gråter du? Varför äter du inte? Varför är du så ledsen? Är inte jag mer för dig än tio söner?” 9 När de hade ätit och druckit i Shilo reste sig Hanna och gick till Herrens tempel, där prästen Eli satt på sin stol vid dörren. 10 Hon var djupt bedrövad och började be till Herren under häftig gråt. 11 (E) Hon gav ett löfte och sade: ”Herre Sebaot, om du vill se till din tjänarinnas lidande och komma ihåg mig och inte glömma din tjänarinna utan ge henne en son, då ska jag ge honom åt Herren för hela hans liv, och ingen rakkniv[i] ska röra hans huvud.” 12 Medan hon bad länge inför Herren iakttog Eli hennes mun. 13 Hanna talade nämligen i sitt hjärta, och bara hennes läppar rörde sig, men hennes röst hördes inte.

Då trodde Eli att hon var berusad. 14 Därför sade han till henne: ”Hur länge ska du bära dig åt som en berusad? Se till att göra dig av med vinet!” 15 (F) ”Nej, min herre”, svarade Hanna, ”jag är en hårt prövad kvinna. Vin och starka drycker har jag inte druckit, men jag utgöt min själ för Herren. 16 Ta inte din tjänarinna för en dålig kvinna, det är på grund av min stora sorg och smärta som jag har talat ända till nu.” 17 Då svarade Eli henne: ”Gå i frid, och må Israels Gud ge[j] dig det du bad honom om.” 18 Hon sade: ”Må din tjänarinna finna nåd för dina ögon.” Så gick hon sin väg och tog sig mat och såg inte sorgsen ut längre.

19 De steg alla upp tidigt nästa morgon, och sedan de tillbett inför Herren vände de tillbaka och kom hem till Rama. Elkana låg med[k] sin hustru Hanna, och Herren kom ihåg henne. 20 Hanna blev havande och födde en son när tiden var inne. Hon gav honom namnet Samuel: ”För jag har bett Herren om honom.”

Hanna överlämnar Samuel åt Herren

21 När sedan Elkana med hela sitt hus gav sig i väg för att offra sitt årliga slaktoffer och sitt löftesoffer åt Herren, 22 gick inte Hanna med utan sade till sin man: ”Jag vill vänta tills pojken är avvand[l]. Då ska jag ta med honom och föra fram honom inför Herrens ansikte och sedan låta honom stanna där för alltid.” 23 Hennes man Elkana sade till henne: ”Gör vad du finner bäst. Stanna du tills du har avvant honom. Må bara Herren uppfylla sitt ord.” Så stannade hustrun hemma och ammade sin son tills hon hade avvant honom.

24 När hon hade avvant honom, tog hon med honom till Herrens hus. Hon tog också med sig tre tjurar,[m] en efa mjöl[n] och en lägel vin, och förde honom in i Herrens hus i Shilo. Pojken var då ännu helt ung. 25 De slaktade tjuren och förde sedan fram pojken till Eli. 26 Hon sade: ”Hör på mig, min herre. Så sant du lever, min herre: jag är kvinnan som stod här bredvid dig och bad till Herren. 27 Den här pojken bad jag om, och nu har Herren gett mig vad jag bad om. 28 Därför vill jag nu ge honom tillbaka till Herren. Så länge han lever ska han tillhöra Herren.” Och de tillbad Herren där.

  8. 1:5 dubbelt så stor   Grundtexten svårtolkad. Annan översättning: ”fin”, ”enda” (så Septuaginta).
  9. 1:11 ingen rakkniv   Troligen invigdes Samuel liksom Simson till nasir (se 4 Mos 6, Dom 13:5).
  10. 1:17 må Israels Gud ge   Annan översättning: ”Israels Gud ska ge”.
  11. 1:19 låg med   Ordagrant: ”kände” (hebreiskt uttryck för sexuell gemenskap, se 1 Mos 4:1).
  12. 1:22 avvand   Från bröstmjölk. Det skedde ofta vid ca 3 års ålder, varpå det nya steget i livet firades med en fest (jfr 1 Mos 21:8).

The Family of Elkanah

1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the (A)mountains of Ephraim, and his name was (B)Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of [a]Elihu, the son of [b]Tohu, the son of Zuph, (C)an Ephraimite. 2 And he had (D)two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 This man went up from his city (E)yearly (F)to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in (G)Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there. 4 And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an (H)offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, (I)although the Lord had closed her womb. 6 And her rival also (J)provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.

Hannah’s Vow

8 Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not (K)better to you than ten sons?”

9 So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of (L)the [c]tabernacle of the Lord. 10 (M)And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and [d]wept in anguish. 11 Then she (N)made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed (O)look on the affliction of Your maidservant and (P)remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and (Q)no razor shall come upon his head.”

12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14 So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!”

15 But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have (R)poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not consider your maidservant a (S)wicked[e] woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.”

17 Then Eli answered and said, (T)“Go in peace, and (U)the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.”

18 And she said, (V)“Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.” So the woman (W)went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

Samuel Is Born and Dedicated

19 Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah (X)knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord (Y)remembered her. 20 So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name [f]Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.”

21 Now the man Elkanah and all his house (Z)went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will (AA)take him, that he may appear before the Lord and (AB)remain there (AC)forever.”

23 So (AD)Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the Lord [g]establish [h]His word.” Then the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

24 Now when she had weaned him, she (AE)took him up with her, with [i]three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to (AF)the house of the Lord in Shiloh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered a bull, and (AG)brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “O my lord! (AH)As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the Lord. 27 (AI)For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. 28 Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be [j]lent to the Lord.” So they (AJ)worshiped the Lord there.

The Birth of Samuel

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)”

9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)”

18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

Hannah Dedicates Samuel

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]

23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
