Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest(A) who has ascended into heaven,[a](B) Jesus the Son of God,(C) let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(D) 15 For we do not have a high priest(E) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are(F)—yet he did not sin.(G) 16 Let us then approach(H) God’s throne of grace with confidence,(I) so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
5 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God,(J) to offer gifts and sacrifices(K) for sins.(L) 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray,(M) since he himself is subject to weakness.(N) 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.(O) 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.(P)
5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory(Q) of becoming a high priest.(R) But God said(S) to him,
6 And he says in another place,
7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions(W) with fervent cries and tears(X) to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard(Y) because of his reverent submission.(Z) 8 Son(AA) though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered(AB) 9 and, once made perfect,(AC) he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest(AD) in the order of Melchizedek.(AE)
Warning Against Falling Away(AF)
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths(AG) of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!(AH) 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant,(AI) is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature,(AJ) who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.(AK)
6 Therefore let us move beyond(AL) the elementary teachings(AM) about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[d](AN) and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites,[e](AO) the laying on of hands,(AP) the resurrection of the dead,(AQ) and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting,(AR) we will do so.
4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened,(AS) who have tasted the heavenly gift,(AT) who have shared in the Holy Spirit,(AU) 5 who have tasted the goodness(AV) of the word of God(AW) and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen[f] away, to be brought back to repentance.(AX) To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God(AY) all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed.(AZ) In the end it will be burned.
9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends,(BA) we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.(BB) 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope(BC) for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate(BD) those who through faith and patience(BE) inherit what has been promised.(BF)
The Certainty of God’s Promise
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,(BG) 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”[g](BH) 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.(BI)
16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.(BJ) 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging(BK) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,(BL) he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,(BM) we who have fled to take hold of the hope(BN) set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,(BO) 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.(BP) He has become a high priest(BQ) forever, in the order of Melchizedek.(BR)
Melchizedek the Priest
7 This Melchizedek was king of Salem(BS) and priest of God Most High.(BT) He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,(BU) 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy,(BV) without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God,(BW) he remains a priest forever.
4 Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch(BX) Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!(BY) 5 Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people(BZ)—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. 6 This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed(CA) him who had the promises.(CB) 7 And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8 In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.(CC) 9 One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.
Jesus Like Melchizedek
11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people(CD) established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come,(CE) one in the order of Melchizedek,(CF) not in the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. 13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe,(CG) and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar.(CH) 14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah,(CI) and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is declared:
18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless(CK) 19 (for the law made nothing perfect),(CL) and a better hope(CM) is introduced, by which we draw near to God.(CN)
20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:
22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.(CQ)
23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.(CR) 25 Therefore he is able to save(CS) completely[j] those who come to God(CT) through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.(CU)
26 Such a high priest(CV) truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners,(CW) exalted above the heavens.(CX) 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices(CY) day after day, first for his own sins,(CZ) and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all(DA) when he offered himself.(DB) 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness;(DC) but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son,(DD) who has been made perfect(DE) forever.

Christ Is Superior to Other Chief Priests
14 We need to hold on to our declaration of faith: We have a superior chief priest who has gone through the heavens. That person is Yeshua, the Son of God. 15 We have a chief priest who is able to sympathize with our weaknesses. He was tempted in every way that we are, but he didn’t sin. 16 So we can go confidently to the throne of God’s kindness[a] to receive mercy and find kindness, which will help us at the right time.
5 Every chief priest is chosen from humans to represent them in front of God, that is, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sin. 2 The chief priest can be gentle with people who are ignorant and easily deceived, because he also has weaknesses. 3 Because he has weaknesses, he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins in the same way that he does for the sins of his people.
4 No one takes this honor for himself. Instead, God calls him as he called Aaron. 5 So Christ did not take the glory of being a chief priest for himself. Instead, the glory was given to him by God, who said,
“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.”
6 In another place in Scripture, God said,
“You are a priest forever,
in the way Melchizedek was a priest.”
7 During his life on earth, Yeshua prayed to God, who could save him from death. He prayed and pleaded with loud crying and tears, and he was heard because of his devotion to God. 8 Although Yeshua was the Son of God, he learned to be obedient through his sufferings. 9 After he had finished his work, he became the source of eternal salvation for everyone who obeys him. 10 God appointed him chief priest in the way Melchizedek was a priest.
You Need Someone to Teach You
11 We have a lot to explain about this. But since you have become too lazy to pay attention, explaining it to you is hard. 12 By now you should be teachers. Instead, you still need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food. 13 All those who live on milk lack the experience to talk about what is right. They are still babies. 14 However, solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to know the difference between good and evil.
6 With this in mind, we should stop going over the elementary truths about Christ and move on to topics for more mature people. We shouldn’t repeat the basics about turning away from the useless things we did and the basics about faith in God. 2 We shouldn’t repeat the basic teachings about such things as baptisms, setting people apart for holy tasks, dead people coming back to life, and eternal judgment. 3 If God permits, we will do this.
4 Some people once had God’s light. They experienced the heavenly gift and shared in the Holy Spirit. 5 They experienced the goodness of God’s word and the powers of the world to come. 6 Yet, they have deserted Christ. They are crucifying the Son of God again and publicly disgracing him. Therefore, they cannot be led a second time to God.
7 God blesses the earth. So rain often falls on it, and it produces useful crops for farmers. 8 However, if the earth produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
God Will Not Forget You
9 Dear friends, even though we say these things, we are still convinced that better things are in store for you and that they will save you. 10 God is fair. He won’t forget what you’ve done or the love you’ve shown for him. You helped his holy people, and you continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to prove that you’re working hard so that you will remain confident until the end. 12 Then, instead of being lazy, you will imitate those who are receiving the promises through faith and patience.
13 God made a promise to Abraham. Since he had no one greater on whom to base his oath, he based it on himself. 14 He said, “I will certainly bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 So Abraham received what God promised because he waited patiently for it.
16 When people take oaths, they base their oaths on someone greater than themselves. Their oaths guarantee what they say and end all arguments. 17 God wouldn’t change his plan. He wanted to make this perfectly clear to those who would receive his promise, so he took an oath. 18 God did this so that we would be encouraged. God cannot lie when he takes an oath or makes a promise. These two things can never be changed. Those of us who have taken refuge in him hold on to the confidence we have been given. 19 We have this confidence as a sure and strong anchor for our lives. This confidence goes into the holy place behind the curtain 20 where Yeshua went before us on our behalf. He has become the chief priest forever in the way Melchizedek was a priest.
Christ Is Superior to Melchizedek
7 Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of the Most High God. He met Abraham and blessed him when Abraham was returning from defeating the kings. 2 Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything he had captured.
In the first place, Melchizedek’s name means king of righteousness. He is also called king of Salem (which means king of peace). 3 No one knows anything about Melchizedek’s father, mother, or ancestors. No one knows when he was born or when he died. Like the Son of God, Melchizedek continues to be a priest forever.
4 You can see how important Melchizedek was. Abraham gave him a tenth of what he had captured, even though Abraham was the father of the chosen people. 5 Moses’ Teachings say that members of the tribe of Levi who become priests must receive a tenth of everything from the people. The priests collect it from their own people, Abraham’s descendants. 6 Although Melchizedek was not from the tribe of Levi, he received a tenth of everything from Abraham. Then Melchizedek blessed Abraham, who had God’s promises. 7 No one can deny that the more important person blesses the less important person.
8 Priests receive a tenth of everything, but they die. Melchizedek received a tenth of everything, but we are told that he lives. 9 We could even say that when Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything, Levi was giving a tenth of everything. Levi gave, although later his descendants would receive a tenth of everything. 10 Even though Levi had not yet been born, he was in the body of Abraham when Melchizedek met him.
11 The people established the Levitical priesthood based on instructions they received. If the work of the Levitical priests had been perfect, we wouldn’t need to speak about another kind of priest. However, we speak about another kind of priest, a priest like Melchizedek, not a Levitical priest like Aaron.
12 When a different kind of priesthood is established, the regulations for those priests are different. 13 The priest whom we are talking about was a member of a different tribe. No one from that tribe ever served as a priest at the altar. 14 Everyone knows that our Lord came from the tribe of Judah. Moses never said anything about priests coming from that tribe. 15 The regulations were different. This became clear when a different priest who is like Melchizedek appeared. 16 That person is a priest, not because he met human requirements, but because he has power that comes from a life that cannot be destroyed. 17 The Scriptures say the following about him: “You are a priest forever, in the way Melchizedek was a priest.” 18 The former requirements are rejected because they are weak and useless. 19 Moses’ Teachings couldn’t accomplish everything that God required. But we have something else that gives us greater confidence and allows us to approach God.
20 None of this happened without an oath. The men from the tribe of Levi may have become priests without an oath, 21 but Yeshua became a priest when God took an oath. God said about him, “The Lord has taken an oath and will not change his mind. You are a priest forever.” 22 In this way Yeshua has become the guarantee of a better promise.[b]
23 There was a long succession of priests because when a priest died he could no longer serve. 24 But Yeshua lives forever, so he serves as a priest forever. 25 That is why he is always able to save those who come to God through him. He can do this because he always lives and intercedes for them.
26 We need a chief priest who is holy, innocent, pure, set apart from sinners, and who has the highest position in heaven. 27 We need a priest who doesn’t have to bring daily sacrifices as those chief priests did. First they brought sacrifices for their own sins, and then they brought sacrifices for the sins of the people. Yeshua brought the sacrifice for the sins of the people once and for all when he sacrificed himself. 28 Moses’ Teachings designated mortals as chief priests even though they had weaknesses. But God’s promise, which came after Moses’ Teachings, designated the Son who forever accomplished everything that God required.

14 Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, es nuestro gran Sumo sacerdote que ha entrado en el cielo. Por eso debemos seguir firmes en la fe que profesamos. 15 Pues nuestro Sumo sacerdote puede compadecerse de nuestra debilidad, porque él también estuvo sometido a las mismas pruebas que nosotros; sólo que él jamás pecó. 16 Acerquémonos, pues, con confianza al trono de nuestro Dios amoroso, para que él tenga misericordia de nosotros y en su bondad nos ayude en la hora de necesidad.
5 Todo sumo sacerdote es escogido de entre los hombres, nombrado para representarlos delante de Dios y para hacer ofrendas y sacrificios por los pecados. 2 Y como el sacerdote está sujeto a las debilidades humanas, puede tener compasión de los ignorantes y los extraviados; 3 y a causa de su propia debilidad, tiene que ofrecer sacrificios por sus pecados tanto como por los pecados del pueblo. 4 Nadie puede tomar este honor para sí mismo, sino que es Dios quien lo llama y le da el honor, como en el caso de Aarón. 5 De la misma manera, Cristo no se nombró Sumo sacerdote a sí mismo, sino que Dios le dio ese honor, pues él fue quien le dijo:

Exhortación a progresar en la fe
11 Tenemos mucho que decir sobre este asunto, pero es difícil explicarlo, porque ustedes son lentos para entender. 12 Al cabo de tanto tiempo, ustedes ya deberían ser maestros; en cambio, necesitan que se les expliquen de nuevo las cosas más sencillas de las enseñanzas de Dios. Han vuelto a ser tan débiles que, en vez de comida sólida, tienen que tomar leche. 13 Y los que se alimentan de leche son como niños de pecho, incapaces de juzgar rectamente. 14 La comida sólida es para los adultos, para los que ya saben juzgar, porque están acostumbrados a distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo.
6 Así que sigamos adelante hasta llegar a ser adultos, dejando a un lado las primeras enseñanzas acerca de Cristo. No volvamos otra vez a las cosas básicas, como la conversión y el abandono de las obras que llevan a la muerte, o como la fe en Dios, 2 las enseñanzas sobre el bautismo, el imponer las manos a los creyentes, la resurrección de los muertos y el juicio eterno. 3 Es lo que haremos, si Dios lo permite.
4 Porque a los que una vez recibieron la luz, y saborearon el don de Dios, y tuvieron parte en el Espíritu Santo, 5 y saborearon el buen mensaje de Dios y el poder del mundo venidero, 6 si caen de nuevo, ya no se les puede hacer volver a Dios, porque ellos mismos están crucificando otra vez al Hijo de Dios y exponiéndolo a la burla de todos. 7 Son como la tierra que bebe la lluvia que cae en abundancia sobre ella: si da una cosecha útil a los que la trabajan, recibe la bendición de Dios; 8 pero si da espinos y cardos, no vale nada; cae bajo la maldición de Dios, y finalmente será quemada.
9 Pero aunque hablamos así, queridos hermanos, estamos seguros de que ustedes se encuentran en el primer caso, es decir, en camino de salvación. 10 Porque Dios es justo, y no olvidará lo que ustedes han hecho y el amor que le han mostrado al ayudar a los del pueblo santo, como aún lo están haciendo. 11 Pero deseamos que cada uno de ustedes siga mostrando hasta el fin ese mismo entusiasmo, para que se realice completamente su esperanza. 12 No queremos que se vuelvan perezosos, sino que sigan el ejemplo de quienes por medio de la fe y la constancia están recibiendo la herencia que Dios les ha prometido.
Promesa y juramento
13 Cuando Dios hizo la promesa a Abraham, juró por sí mismo, porque no había otro superior a él por quien jurar; 14 y dijo: «Sí, yo te bendeciré mucho y haré que tu descendencia sea numerosa.» 15 Abraham esperó con paciencia, y recibió lo que Dios le había prometido. 16 Cuando los hombres juran, lo hacen por alguien superior a ellos mismos; y cuando garantizan algo mediante un juramento, ya no hay más que discutir. 17 Pues bien, Dios quiso mostrar claramente a quienes habían de recibir la herencia que él les prometía, que estaba dispuesto a cumplir la promesa sin cambiar nada de ella. Por eso garantizó su promesa mediante el juramento. 18 De estas dos cosas que no pueden cambiarse y en las que Dios no puede mentir, recibimos un firme consuelo los que hemos buscado la protección de Dios y hemos confiado en la esperanza que él nos ha dado. 19 Esta esperanza mantiene firme y segura nuestra alma, igual que el ancla mantiene firme al barco. Es una esperanza que ha penetrado hasta detrás del velo en el templo celestial, 20 donde antes entró Jesús para abrirnos camino, llegando así a ser Sumo sacerdote para siempre, de la misma clase que Melquisedec.
Jesús, sacerdote como Melquisedec
7 Este Melquisedec fue rey de Salem y sacerdote del Dios altísimo. Cuando Abraham regresaba de la batalla en la que había derrotado a los reyes, Melquisedec salió a su encuentro y lo bendijo; 2 entonces Abraham le dio la décima parte de todo lo que había ganado en la batalla. Ante todo, hay que notar que el nombre Melquisedec significa «rey de justicia», pero aparece también como rey de Salem, que quiere decir «rey de paz». 3 Nada se sabe de su padre ni de su madre ni de sus antepasados; ni tampoco se habla de su nacimiento ni de su muerte; y así, a semejanza del Hijo de Dios, es sacerdote para siempre.
4 Ahora bien, fíjense qué importante era Melquisedec, que nuestro propio antepasado Abraham le dio la décima parte de lo que les había ganado a los reyes en la batalla. 5 Según la ley de Moisés, los sacerdotes que son descendientes de Leví tienen el derecho de cobrarle al pueblo la décima parte de todo, a pesar de que son sus parientes y descienden de Abraham lo mismo que ellos. 6 Pero Melquisedec, aunque no era descendiente de Leví, le cobró la décima parte a Abraham, que había recibido las promesas de Dios. Así Melquisedec bendijo a Abraham; 7 y nadie puede negar que el que bendice es superior al bendecido. 8 Aquí, en esta vida, los que cobran la décima parte son hombres mortales; pero la Escritura habla de Melquisedec como de uno que todavía vive. 9 Y se puede decir que los sacerdotes que descienden de Leví, y que ahora cobran la décima parte, pagaron también la décima parte a Melquisedec al pagársela a él Abraham; 10 porque, en cierto sentido, cuando Melquisedec salió al encuentro de Abraham, éste llevaba ya en su cuerpo a sus descendientes que aún no habían nacido.
Los dos sacerdocios
11 El pueblo de Israel recibió la ley basada en el sacerdocio levítico. Ahora bien, si estos sacerdotes hubieran podido hacer perfectos a los hombres, no habría sido necesario que apareciera otro sacerdote, ya no de la clase de Aarón sino de la clase de Melquisedec. 12 Porque al cambiar el sacerdocio, también se tiene que cambiar la ley; 13 y nuestro Señor, de quien la Escritura dice esto, pertenece a otra tribu de Israel, de la cual no ha salido ningún sacerdote. 14 Porque es bien sabido que nuestro Señor vino de la tribu de Judá, y Moisés no dijo nada de esa tribu cuando habló del sacerdocio.
15 Y esto es aún más claro si el nuevo sacerdote que aparece es uno como Melquisedec, 16 que no fue sacerdote según una ley que toma en cuenta elementos puramente humanos, sino según el poder de una vida indestructible. 17 Porque esto es lo que Dios dice de él:
«Tú eres sacerdote para siempre,
de la misma clase que Melquisedec.»
18 Así que el mandato anterior quedó cancelado porque era débil e inútil, 19 pues la ley de Moisés no perfeccionó nada, y en su lugar tenemos una esperanza mejor, por la cual nos acercamos a Dios.
Superioridad del sacerdocio de Jesús
20 Y Dios garantizó esto con un juramento. Los otros sacerdotes fueron nombrados sin juramento alguno, 21 pero en el caso del Señor sí hubo un juramento, pues en la Escritura se le dice:
«El Señor hizo un juramento
y no va a desdecirse:
“Tú eres sacerdote para siempre.”»
22 De este modo, Jesús es quien garantiza una alianza mejor que la primera. 23 Los otros sacerdotes fueron muchos porque la muerte les impedía seguir viviendo; 24 pero como Jesús no muere, su oficio sacerdotal no pasa a ningún otro. 25 Por eso puede salvar para siempre a los que se acercan a Dios por medio de él, pues vive para siempre, para rogar a Dios por ellos.
26 Así pues, Jesús es precisamente el Sumo sacerdote que necesitábamos. Él es santo, sin maldad y sin mancha, apartado de los pecadores y puesto más alto que el cielo. 27 No es como los otros sumos sacerdotes, que tienen que matar animales y ofrecerlos cada día en sacrificio, primero por sus propios pecados y luego por los pecados del pueblo. Por el contrario, Jesús ofreció el sacrificio una sola vez y para siempre, cuando se ofreció a sí mismo. 28 La ley de Moisés nombra como Sumos sacerdotes a hombres imperfectos; pero el juramento de Dios, que fue hecho después de la ley, nombra sumo sacerdote a su Hijo, quien ha sido hecho perfecto para siempre.
