投奔大衛的便雅憫勇士

12 大衛因為基士的兒子掃羅的緣故，躲在洗革拉的時候，以下這些人就來到大衛那裡；他們都是勇士，在戰爭中幫助他。 ²他們配備弓箭，能用左右兩手開弓甩石射箭；他們都屬便雅憫支派，是掃羅的親族。 ³他們的首領是亞希以謝，其次是約阿施，都是基比亞人示瑪的兒子；還有亞斯瑪威的兒子耶薛和毘力；又有比拉迦和亞拿突人耶戶， ⁴以及基遍人以實買雅，他在三十人中是個勇士，並且統領那三十人，又有耶利米、雅哈悉、約哈難和基得拉人約撒拔（“又有耶利米……約撒拔”在《馬索拉文本》為12:5）、 ⁵伊利烏賽、耶利摩、比亞利雅、示瑪利雅、哈律弗人示法提雅；（本節在《馬索拉文本》為12:6） ⁶可拉人有以利加拿、耶西亞、亞薩列、約以謝和雅朔班、 ⁷基多人耶羅罕的兒子猶拉和西巴第雅。

⁸迦得支派中，有些人走到曠野的山寨去投奔大衛，他們都是英勇的戰士，善於作戰，能使用盾牌和長槍；他們的面貌好像獅子，他們敏捷得好像山上的羚羊。 ⁹第一個是以薛，第二是俄巴底雅，第三是以利押， ¹⁰第四是彌施瑪拿，第五是耶利米， ¹¹第六是亞太，第七是以利業， ¹²第八是約哈難，第九是以利薩巴， ¹³第十是耶利米，第十一是末巴奈。 ¹⁴這些都是迦得支派中的軍長，最小的一個能抵擋一百人，最大的一個能抵擋一千人。 ¹⁵在正月，約旦河水漲過兩岸的時候，這些人過了河，使全平原的人都東奔西逃。

¹⁶便雅憫支派和猶大支派中也有人來到山寨投奔大衛。 ¹⁷大衛出去迎見他們，對他們說：“你們若是存著和平的心到我這裡來幫助我，我就與你們結盟，但你們若是把我這無辜的人出賣給我的敵人，就願我們列祖的　神鑒察和審判。” ¹⁸當時，　神的靈降在那三十個勇士的首領亞瑪撒身上，他就說：

“大衛啊，我們是來歸從你；

耶西的兒子啊，我們是來跟隨你；

願你平平安安，

願幫助你的人也都平安，

因為你的　神幫助了你。”

於是大衛收留了他們，立他們作軍長。

¹⁹大衛從前與非利士人一起，要去攻擊掃羅的時候，有些瑪拿西支派的人投奔大衛；但他們沒有幫助非利士人，因為非利士人的領袖商議後把他遣回，說：“恐怕大衛帶著我們的首級歸向他的主人掃羅。” ²⁰大衛回到洗革拉的時候，瑪拿西支派的押拿、約撒拔、耶疊、米迦勒、約撒拔、以利戶、洗勒太來投奔他，他們都是瑪拿西支派中的千夫長。 ²¹他們幫助大衛，與他一同攻擊賊匪；他們全是英勇的戰士，是軍隊的領袖。 ²²那時，天天都有人投奔大衛，要幫助他，以致成了一支大軍，好像　神的軍兵一樣。

投奔大衛的軍兵

²³預備作戰的首領來到希伯崙見大衛，要照著耶和華的命令把掃羅的國位轉歸大衛，他們的數目如下： ²⁴猶大支派的子孫拿盾牌和長槍的，共有六千八百人，都預備好作戰。 ²⁵西緬支派的子孫能作戰的英勇戰士，共有七千一百人。 ²⁶利未支派的子孫中，共有四千六百人。 ²⁷耶何耶大是亞倫家的領袖，跟隨他的，共有三千七百人。 ²⁸還有一個年輕的英勇戰士撒督和他家族的二十二個領袖。 ²⁹便雅憫支派的子孫中，掃羅的親族也有三千人，直到現在他們多半支持掃羅家。 ³⁰以法蓮支派的子孫中，在自己家族中有名聲的英勇的戰士，共有二萬零八百人。 ³¹瑪拿西半個支派中有記名的，共一萬八千人，都來擁立大衛為王。 ³²以薩迦支派的子孫中，通曉時勢和知道以色列當怎樣行的，共有二百個首領；他們所有的親族都聽從他們的命令。 ³³西布倫支派的子孫中，能出去作戰、可以使用各種兵器，行軍整齊、不生二心的，共有五萬人。 ³⁴拿弗他利支派的子孫中，有一千個領袖；跟隨他們拿著盾牌和矛槍的，共有三萬七千人。 ³⁵但支派的子孫中能作戰的，共有二萬八千六百人。 ³⁶亞設支派的子孫中，能出去上陣作戰的，共有四萬人。 ³⁷在約旦河東岸，流本支派、迦得支派和瑪拿西半個支派的人中，能拿各種兵器作戰的，共有十二萬。

³⁸以上這些戰士，行軍齊整，一心一意來到希伯崙，要立大衛作以色列王；其餘的以色列人也都一心一意要立大衛為王。 ³⁹他們在那裡三天，與大衛在一起吃喝，因為他們的親族給他們預備好了。 ⁴⁰在他們附近的人，甚至以薩迦、西布倫和拿弗他利支派的人，都用驢、駱駝、騾子和牛，給他們帶來了很多食物：麵餅、無花果餅、葡萄餅乾、酒、油和許多牛羊，以色列全境就充滿歡樂。

David’s First Followers. ¹These were the men who came to David while he was at Ziklag, a fugitive from Saul, the son of Kish. They were the brave warriors who helped him in battle. ²They were armed with bows, and they could sling stones or shoot arrows from a bow with their right hand or their left. They were kinsmen of Saul from Benjamin.

³Ahiezer was their leader, and then Joash, who were the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite. There were Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah; Jehu the Anathothite; ⁴Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a brave warrior from among the Thirty and the leader of the Thirty; Jeremiah; Jahaziel; Johanan; Jozabad the Gederathite; ⁵Eluzai; Jerimoth; Bealiah; Shemariah; Shephatiah the Haruphite; ⁶Elkanah; Isshiah; Azarel; Joezer; Jashobeam the Korahite; ⁷and Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.

⁸Some Gadites joined David in the wilderness. They were brave men, warriors ready for battle, able to handle the shield and the spear. Their faces were as fierce as the faces of lions, and they were as swift as gazelles upon the mountains. ⁹Ezer was the first; Obadiah was the second; Eliab was the third; ¹⁰Mishmannah was the fourth; Jeremiah was the fifth; ¹¹Attai was the sixth; Eliel was the seventh; ¹²Johanan was the eighth; Elzabad was the ninth; ¹³Jeremiah the tenth; and Machbannai the eleventh. ¹⁴These Gadites were captains of the army. The weakest of them was worth a hundred, the strongest was worth a thousand. ¹⁵They were crossing over the Jordan during the first month when it was overflowing its banks, and they put to flight everyone who was living in the valleys to the east and the west.

¹⁶Some other Benjaminites and Judahites also went out to David in his stronghold. ¹⁷David went out to meet them and he said to them, “If you have come to me in peace, to help me, then your heart will be one with my heart. But if you are here to betray me to my enemies even though my hands are innocent, may the God of our fathers see it and rebuke you.”

¹⁸The Spirit then came upon Amasai, the leader of the captains, and he said,

“We are yours, David.
    We will be with you, O son of Jesse.
May it go well with you,
    and may it go well with those who help you,
    for your God will help you.”

David received them and made them captains of his raiding parties.

¹⁹Some men from Manasseh went over to David when he went to the Philistines to fight against Saul. He, however, did not help them because the lords of the Philistines had discussed it and sent him away saying, “It would cost us our heads if he were to defect to his master Saul.”

²⁰These were the men of Manasseh who went over to him in Ziklag: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai. They were captains of the thousands in Manasseh. ²¹They helped David fight against the raiding parties, and they were brave warriors, all of them captains of the army.

²²From that time on, more men would arrive daily to help David until he had a large army, like an army of God.^[a]

²³Assembly at Hebron. These are the numbers of the bands of those who came to David in Hebron ready for battle. They turned Saul’s kingdom over to him, according to the word of the Lord.

²⁴From Judah, there were six thousand, eight hundred men bearing shield and spear, ready for battle. ²⁵From Simeon there were seven thousand, one hundred brave warriors, ready for battle. ²⁶From Levi there were four thousand, six hundred men. ²⁷These included Jehoiada, the leader of the Aaronites, and with him there were three thousand, seven hundred men. ²⁸There was Zadok, a young man who was a brave warrior, with twenty-two captains from his father’s household. ²⁹From Benjamin, Saul’s kinsmen, there were three thousand men, most of whom had remained faithful to the house of Saul until then. ³⁰From Ephraim there were twenty thousand, eight hundred brave warriors who were famous in their ancestral clans. ³¹There were eighteen thousand men from one-half of the tribe of Manasseh. They were designated by name to go and make David king. ³²From Issachar there were two hundred leaders with their brethren under them. They understood well the time and what Israel should do.^[b] ³³From Zebulun there were fifty thousand experienced fighters ready to go into battle. They had every different type of weapon, and they were of undivided loyalty. ³⁴From Naphtali there were one thousand captains along with thirty-seven thousand men armed with shield and spear. ³⁵From Dan there were twenty-eight thousand, six hundred men, ready for battle. ³⁶From Asher there were forty thousand experienced fighters ready for battle. ³⁷From the eastern side of the Jordan, there were one hundred and twenty thousand men armed with every different type of weapon from Reuben, Gad, and one-half of the tribe of Manasseh.

³⁸All of these were well-trained fighting men. They came to Hebron for they wholeheartedly wanted to make David king over all of Israel. The rest of Israel was in agreement to make David king.^[c] ³⁹They spent three days eating and drinking with David (for their brethren had provided provisions for them). ⁴⁰Their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali brought food on their donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen: plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep, for joy had spread throughout Israel.

²They were armed with keshet (bow), and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting khitzim (arrows) from a keshet; they were kinsmen of Sha’ul, of Binyamin.

³The head was Achiezer, then Yoash, the Bnei Shema’ah the Giveati; Yeziel, Pelet, the Bnei Azmavet; Berachah, and Yehu the Antoti.

⁴⁽⁵⁾And Yishmayah the Giveoni, a gibbor among the Shloshim (Thirty), and over the Shloshim; and Yirmeyah, Yachaziel, Yochanan, and Yozavad the Gederati,

⁵⁽⁶⁾Eluzai, Yerimot, Bealyah, Shemaryahu, and Shephatyahu the Charuphi,

⁶⁽⁷⁾Elkanah, Yishiyahu, Azare’el, Yoezer, and Yashov‘am, the Korchi,

⁷⁽⁸⁾And Yoelah, and Zevadyah, the Bnei Yerocham of Gedor.

⁸⁽⁹⁾And of the Gadi there separated themselves unto Dovid into the stronghold in the midbar gibborei hachayil (men of valor), and anshei tzavah (army men) for milchamah, that could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of aryeh, and were as swift as the gazelles upon the harim;

⁹⁽¹⁰⁾Ezer the head, Ovadyah the second, Eliav the third,

¹⁰⁽¹¹⁾Mishmannah the fourth, Yirmeyah the fifth,

¹¹⁽¹²⁾Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,

¹²⁽¹³⁾Yochanan the eighth, Elzavad the ninth,

¹³⁽¹⁴⁾Yirmeyah the tenth, Machbanai the eleventh.

¹⁴⁽¹⁵⁾These were of the Bnei Gad, commanders of the tzava (army). One of the least was equal to a hundred, and the greatest to an elef.

¹⁵⁽¹⁶⁾These are they that went over Yarden in the first month, when it was overflowing all its banks; they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east, and toward the west.

¹⁶⁽¹⁷⁾And there came of the Bnei Binyamin and Yehudah to the stronghold unto Dovid.

¹⁷⁽¹⁸⁾And Dovid went out before them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come in shalom unto me to help me, mine lev shall be united unto you, but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no chamas in mine hands, Elohei Avoteinu look thereon, and pass [His] judgment.

¹⁸⁽¹⁹⁾Then the Ruach [HaKodesh] came upon Amasai, who was head of the Thirty, and he said, Thine are we, Dovid, and on thy side, thou Ben Yishai. Shalom, shalom be unto thee, and shalom be to thine helpers; for Eloheicha helpeth thee. Then Dovid received them, and made them heads of the gedud (raiding band, troop).

¹⁹⁽²⁰⁾And there defected some of Menasheh to Dovid, when he went with the Pelishtim (Philistines) against Sha’ul for milchamah, but they helped them [Pelishtim] not; for the rulers of the Pelishtim after etzah (counsel) sent him [Dovid] away, saying, He [Dovid] will defect to his adon Sha’ul to the jeopardy of our heads.

²⁰⁽²¹⁾As he went to Tziklag, there defected to him those of Menasheh, Adnach, and Yozavad, and Yedia’el, and Micha’el, and Yozavad, and Elihu, and Tziltai, heads of the alafim that were of Menasheh.

²¹⁽²²⁾And they helped Dovid against the gedud, for they were all gibborei chayil, and were sarim in the tzava (army).

²²⁽²³⁾For at that time day by day there came men to Dovid to help him, until it was a machaneh gadol, like the Machaneh Elohim.

²³⁽²⁴⁾And these are the numbers of the leaders that were ready-armed for the army, and came to Dovid to Chevron, to turn over the Malchut Sha’ul to him, according to the word of Hashem.

²⁴⁽²⁵⁾The Bnei Yehudah that bore shield and romach (spear) were six alafim and eight hundred, ready-armed for tzva.

²⁵⁽²⁶⁾Of the Bnei Shim’on, gibborei chayil for tzava, shivat alafim and one hundred.

²⁶⁽²⁷⁾Of the Bnei Levi four alafim and six hundred.

²⁷⁽²⁸⁾And Yehoyada was the nagid of those of Aharon, and with him were three alafim and sheva hundred;

²⁸⁽²⁹⁾And Tzadok, a na’ar gibbor chayil, and of bais aviv twenty and two sarim.

²⁹⁽³⁰⁾And of the Bnei Binyamin, the kindred of Sha’ul, three alafim; for up until then the greatest part of them had kept shomrim mishmeret Bais Sha’ul (guarded loyalty to the House of Sha’ul).

³⁰⁽³¹⁾And of the Bnei Ephrayim twenty elef and eight hundred, gibborei chayil, famous throughout the bais of their avot.

³¹⁽³²⁾And of the half tribe of Menasheh eighteen elef, which were designated by shmot, to come and make Dovid Melech.

³²⁽³³⁾And of the Bnei Yissakhar, which were men that had binah (understanding) of the times, to know what Yisroel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were under their commandment.

³³⁽³⁴⁾Of Zevulun, such as went forth to tzava (military service), expert in milchamah, with all instruments of milchamah, fifty elef, which could keep rank; they were not of double heart.

³⁴⁽³⁵⁾And of Naphtali elef sarim, and with them with shield and khanit (spear) thirty and shivah elef.

³⁵⁽³⁶⁾And of the Dani expert in milchamah twenty and eight elef and six hundred.

³⁶⁽³⁷⁾And of Asher, such as went forth to tzava (military service), expert in milchamah, forty elef.

³⁷⁽³⁸⁾And on the other side of Yarden, of the Reuveni, and the Gadi, and of the half shevet (tribe) of Menasheh, with all manner of instruments of tzava for the milchamah, a hundred and twenty elef.

³⁸⁽³⁹⁾All these anshei milchamah, that could keep rank, came with a levav shalem to Chevron, to make Dovid Melech over kol Yisroel; and all the rest also of Yisroel were of lev echad to make Dovid Melech.

³⁹⁽⁴⁰⁾And there they were with Dovid yamim shloshah, eating and drinking, for their brethren had prepared for them.

⁴⁰⁽⁴¹⁾Moreover they that were kerovim (near ones, neighbors) to them, even unto Yissakhar and Zevulun and Naphtali, brought lechem on chamorim, and on gemalim (camels), and on peradim, and on bakar, and food of kemach (flour), cakes of figs, and raisin cakes, and yayin, and shemen, and bakar, and tzon abundantly; for there was simchah in Yisroel.

Warriors Join David

12 These were the men who came to David at Ziklag,^(A) while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; ²they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed;^(B) they were relatives of Saul^(C) from the tribe of Benjamin):

³Ahiezer their chief and Joash the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berakah, Jehu the Anathothite, ⁴and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty warrior among the Thirty, who was a leader of the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite,^[a]^(D) ⁵Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah and Shephatiah the Haruphite; ⁶Elkanah, Ishiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites; ⁷and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.^(E)

⁸Some Gadites^(F) defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions,^(G) and they were as swift as gazelles^(H) in the mountains.

⁹Ezer was the chief,

Obadiah the second in command, Eliab the third,

¹⁰Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,

¹¹Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,

¹²Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,

¹³Jeremiah the tenth and Makbannai the eleventh.

¹⁴These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a hundred,^(I) and the greatest for a thousand.^(J) ¹⁵It was they who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks,^(K) and they put to flight everyone living in the valleys, to the east and to the west.

¹⁶Other Benjamites^(L) and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold. ¹⁷David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, I am ready for you to join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our ancestors see it and judge you.”

¹⁸Then the Spirit^(M) came on Amasai,^(N) chief of the Thirty, and he said:

“We are yours, David!
    We are with you, son of Jesse!
Success,^(O) success to you,
    and success to those who help you,
        for your God will help you.”

So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.

¹⁹Some of the tribe of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, “It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.”)^(P) ²⁰When David went to Ziklag,^(Q) these were the men of Manasseh who defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh. ²¹They helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave warriors, and they were commanders in his army. ²²Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.^[b]

Others Join David at Hebron

²³These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron^(R) to turn^(S) Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:^(T)

²⁴from Judah, carrying shield and spear—6,800 armed for battle;

²⁵from Simeon, warriors ready for battle—7,100;

²⁶from Levi—4,600, ²⁷including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, ²⁸and Zadok,^(U) a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;

²⁹from Benjamin,^(V) Saul’s tribe—3,000, most^(W) of whom had remained loyal to Saul’s house until then;

³⁰from Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans—20,800;

³¹from half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king—18,000;

³²from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do^(X)—200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;

³³from Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty—50,000;

³⁴from Naphtali—1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;

³⁵from Dan, ready for battle—28,600;

³⁶from Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle—40,000;

³⁷and from east of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon—120,000.

³⁸All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel.^(Y) All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. ³⁹The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking,^(Z) for their families had supplied provisions for them. ⁴⁰Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies^(AA) of flour, fig cakes, raisin^(AB) cakes, wine, olive oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy^(AC) in Israel.
