2 這樣，天地萬物都造齊了。 ²第七日，　神完成了他所作的工；在第七日　神歇了他所作的一切工。 ³　神賜福第七日，把它分別為聖，因為在這一日，　神停了他一切所創造的工，歇息了。

創造男人並設置伊甸園

⁴這是創造天地的起源：耶和華　神造天地的時候， ⁵原野上還沒有樹木，田間的蔬菜還沒有長起來，因為耶和華　神還沒有降雨在地上，也沒有人耕種土地； ⁶不過有霧氣從地面上升，滋潤全地。 ⁷耶和華　神用地上的塵土造成人形，把生氣吹進他的鼻孔裡，那人就成了有生命的活人，名叫亞當。 ⁸耶和華　神在東方的伊甸，栽了一個園子，把他所造的人放在那裡。 ⁹耶和華　神使各樣的樹從地上長起來，能悅人的眼目，也好作食物。園子中間又有生命樹，和知善惡樹。

¹⁰有一條河從伊甸流出來，灌溉那園子；從那裡分支，成了四道河的源頭。 ¹¹第一道河名叫比遜，就是環繞哈腓拉全地的，在那裡有金子； ¹²那地的金子是好的；在那裡也有紅玉和瑪瑙。 ¹³第二道河名叫基訓，就是環繞古實全地的。 ¹⁴第三道河名叫底格里斯河（“底格里斯河”原文作“希底結”），就是流向亞述東邊的。第四道河就是幼發拉底河（“幼發拉底河”原文作“伯拉河”）。 ¹⁵耶和華　神把那人安置在伊甸園裡，叫他耕種和看守那園子。 ¹⁶耶和華　神吩咐那人說：“園中各樣樹上的果子，你都可以吃； ¹⁷只是那知善惡樹的果子，你不可吃；因為你吃的時候，你必要死。”

¹⁸耶和華　神說：“那人獨居不好，我要為他造個和他相配的幫手。” ¹⁹耶和華　神用泥土造了野地的各樣野獸，和空中的各樣飛鳥，把牠們都帶到那人面前，看他給牠們叫甚麼名字；那人怎樣叫各樣有生命的活物，那就是牠的名字。 ²⁰那人就給各樣牲畜、空中的雀鳥，和野地的各樣走獸起了名字；只是那人沒有遇見一個和他相配的幫手。 ²¹耶和華　神使那人沉睡。他熟睡的時候，耶和華　神取了他的一根肋骨，又使肉在原處復合。 ²²然後，耶和華　神用從那人身上所取的肋骨，造了一個女人，帶她到那人面前。 ²³那人說：

“這是我骨中的骨，

肉中的肉；

她當稱為女人，

因她是從男人身上取出來的。”

²⁴因此人要離開父母，和妻子連合，二人成為一體。 ²⁵那時，夫妻二人赤身露體，彼此都不覺得羞恥。

The Seventh Day—Rest

2 So the earth, the sky, and everything in them were finished. ²God finished the work he was doing, so on the seventh day he rested from his work. ³God blessed the seventh day and made it a holy day. He made it special because on that day he rested from all the work he did while creating the world.

The First Man and the Garden of Eden

⁴This is the story about the creation of the sky and the earth. This is what happened when the Lord God made the earth and the sky. ⁵This was before there were plants on the earth. Nothing was growing in the fields because the Lord God had not yet made it rain on the earth, and there was no one to care for the plants.

⁶So water^[a] came up from the earth and spread over the ground. ⁷Then the Lord God took dust from the ground and made a man.^[b] He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nose, and the man became a living thing. ⁸Then the Lord God planted a garden in the East,^[c] in a place named Eden. He put the man he made in that garden. ⁹Then the Lord God caused all the beautiful trees that were good for food to grow in the garden. In the middle of the garden, he put the tree of life and the tree that gives knowledge about good and evil.

¹⁰A river flowed from Eden and watered the garden. The river then separated and became four smaller rivers. ¹¹The name of the first river was Pishon. This river flowed around the entire country of Havilah.^[d] ¹²(There is gold in that country, and that gold is pure. A kind of expensive perfume and onyx are also found there.) ¹³The name of the second river was Gihon. This river flowed around the whole land of Cush.^[e] ¹⁴The name of the third river was Tigris. This river flowed east of Assyria. The fourth river was the Euphrates.

¹⁵The Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden to work the soil and take care of the garden. ¹⁶The Lord God gave him this command: “You may eat from any tree in the garden. ¹⁷But you must not eat from the tree that gives knowledge about good and evil. If you eat fruit from that tree, on that day you will certainly die!”

A Companion for Adam

¹⁸Then the Lord God said, “I see that it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make the companion he needs, one just right for him.”

¹⁹The Lord God used dust from the ground and made every animal in the fields and every bird in the air. He brought all these animals to the man, and the man gave them all a name. ²⁰The man gave names to all the tame animals, to all the birds in the air, and to all the wild animals. He saw many animals and birds, but he could not find a companion that was right for him. ²¹So the Lord God caused the man to sleep very deeply. While he was asleep, God took one of the ribs from the man’s body. Then he closed the man’s skin where the rib had been. ²²The Lord God used the rib from the man to make a woman. Then he brought the woman to the man. ²³And the man said,

“Finally! One like me,
    with bones from my bones
    and a body from my body.
She was taken out of a man,
    so I will call her ‘woman.’”

²⁴That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife. In this way two people become one.

²⁵The man and his wife were naked, but they were not ashamed.

Genesis 2:11 Havilah The land along the west coast of the Arabian peninsula and possibly, the part of Africa south of Ethiopia.
