31 雅各听见拉班的众子谈论，说：“雅各把我们父亲所有的都夺去了，他这一切财物，都是从我们父亲的财产那里得来的。” 2 雅各也注意到拉班的脸色，对自己不像从前那样了。 3 那时，耶和华对雅各说：“你要回到你列祖之地，到你的亲族那里去，我必与你同在。” 4 雅各就派人把拉结和利亚叫到田间的羊群那里去， 5 对她们说：“我注意到你们父亲的脸色，对我不像从前那样了；但是我父亲的　神与我同在。 6 我尽了我的力量来服事你们的父亲，这是你们知道的； 7 你们的父亲却欺骗了我，十次更改了我的工资；但　神不容许他伤害我。 8 如果他说：‘有斑点的算是你的工资’，羊群所生的全部都有斑点；如果他说：‘有条纹的算是你的工资’，羊群所生的全部有条纹。 9 这样，　神把你们父亲的牲畜夺来，赐给我了。 10 有一次，羊群交配的时候，我在梦中举目观看，看见爬在母羊身上的公山羊，都是有条纹、有斑点和有花斑的。 11 　神的使者在梦中对我说：‘雅各。’我说：‘我在这里。’ 12 他说：‘你举目观看，所有爬在母羊身上的公山羊，都是有条纹、有斑点和有花斑的，因为拉班向你所作的一切，我都看见了。 13 我就是伯特利的　神，你曾经在那里用油膏过石柱，又在那里向我许过愿。现在你要起程，离开这地，回到你的亲族那里去吧。’” 14 拉结和利亚回答雅各，说：“在我们父亲的家里，我们还有可得的分和产业吗？ 15 他不是把我们看作外人吗？因为他把我们卖了，吞没了我们的身价。 16 　神从我们父亲夺回来的一切财物，都是属于我们和我们的儿女的。现在　神吩咐你的一切，你只管作吧。”

雅各不辞而别

17 于是雅各起来，叫他的儿女和妻子们都骑上骆驼。 18 又赶着他所有的牲畜，带着他所得的一切财物，就是他在巴旦．亚兰所得的一切牲畜，要到迦南地，他父亲以撒那里去。 19 当时拉班剪羊毛去了，拉结就偷了他父亲的神像。 20 雅各瞒着亚兰人拉班（“瞒着亚兰人拉班”直译是“偷了亚兰人拉班的心”），没有告诉拉班他将要逃走。 21 于是，雅各带着他所有的一切逃走了。他起程渡过了大河，面对着基列山走去。

拉班追赶雅各

22 到了第三天，有人告诉拉班说雅各逃走了。 23 拉班就带着自己的众兄弟追赶他，追了七日的路程，才在基列山把他们追上了。 24 当天晚上，　神在梦中来到亚兰人拉班那里，对他说：“你要小心，不可与雅各说甚么。” 25 拉班追上了雅各。当时雅各已经在山上支搭了帐棚；拉班和他的众兄弟，也在基列山上支搭了帐棚。 26 拉班对雅各说：“你作的是甚么事呢？你瞒着我，把我的女儿们当作战俘一样带走了。 27 你为甚么暗中逃走，瞒着我不让我知道，使我可以欢欢喜喜地唱歌、击鼓、弹琴给你送行呢？ 28 你又不让我与我的外孙和女儿亲吻。你所作的太糊涂了！ 29 我本来有能力可以伤害你，但昨天晚上，你们父亲的　神对我说：‘你要小心，不可与雅各说甚么。’ 30 现在你既然渴想你的父家，一定要回去，为甚么又偷我的神像呢？” 31 雅各回答拉班，说：“我逃走，是因为我害怕，我心里想：恐怕你会把你的女儿们从我的手中抢走。 32 至于你的神像，你在谁身上搜出来，那人就不该活着；你当着我们众兄弟面前查一查，如果在我这里有甚么东西是你的，你只管拿去。”原来雅各不知拉结偷了神像。

33 拉班进了雅各的帐棚、利亚的帐棚和两个婢女的帐棚，都没有搜出甚么，于是从利亚的帐棚出来，进了拉结的帐棚。 34 拉结已经把神像放在骆驼的鞍下，自己坐在上面。拉班搜遍了帐棚，但没有搜出甚么。 35 拉结对她父亲说：“求我主不要生气，我不能在你面前起来，因为我正有女人的经期。”这样，拉班彻底搜查了，也搜不出那神像来。

36 雅各就生气，与拉班争吵起来。雅各责问拉班说：“我到底有甚么过犯，有甚么罪恶，你竟这样急速地追赶我呢？ 37 你已经搜遍了我所有的家具，你有找到你家的东西没有？可以把它放在这里，在你我的众兄弟面前，让他们可以在你我中间判断一下。 38 这二十年来，我与你在一起；你的母绵羊和母山羊没掉过胎，你羊群中的公羊，我没有吃过。 39 被野兽撕裂的，我没有给你带回来，都是由我自己赔偿；无论白天偷去的，或是黑夜偷的，你都要我负责。 40 我白天受尽炎热，黑夜受尽寒霜，不能入睡；我经常是这样。 41 我这二十年在你的家里，为你的两个女儿服事了你十四年；为你的羊群服事了你六年；你又十次改了我的工资。 42 如果不是我父亲的　神，就是亚伯拉罕的　神，以撒所敬畏的　神，与我同在，你现在必定打发我空手回去。但　神看见了我的苦情和我手中的辛劳，所以他昨天晚上责备了你。”

雅各与拉班立约

43 拉班回答雅各，说：“这些女儿是我的女儿；这些孩子是我的孩子；这些羊群也是我的羊群。其实你眼所见的一切都是我的。但我今日向我的女儿和她们所生的孩子，能作甚么呢？ 44 来吧，现在我和你可以立约，作为你我之间的证据。” 45 雅各就拿了一块石头，立作石柱。 46 雅各又对自己的众兄弟说：“你们把石头堆聚起来。”他们就把石头拿来，堆成了一堆。他们又在石堆旁边吃喝。 47 拉班称那石堆为伊迦尔．撒哈杜他，雅各却称那石堆为迦累得。 48 拉班说：“今天这堆石头是你我之间的证据。”因此它名叫迦累得， 49 又名叫米斯巴，因为拉班说：“我们彼此分离以后，愿耶和华在你我中间鉴察。 50 你若苦待我的女儿，或在我的女儿以外，另娶妻子，虽然没有人在我们中间作证，但你要注意，　神就是你我之间的见证人。” 51 拉班又对雅各说：“你看这堆石头，看我在你我之间所竖立的石柱。 52 这堆石头就是证据，这石柱也是证据：我决不越过这石堆到你那里去，你也决不可越过这石堆和石柱，到我这里来害我。 53 但愿亚伯拉罕的　神、拿鹤的　神，就是他们父亲的　神，在我们中间判断。”雅各就指着他父亲以撒所敬畏的　神起誓。 54 雅各又在山上献祭，叫了自己的众兄弟来吃饭。他们吃了饭，就在山上过夜。 55 拉班清早起来，与他的外孙和女儿亲吻，给他们祝福。然后拉班离开那里，回自己的地方去了。（本节在《马索拉文本》为32:1）

Jakob återvänder hem

31 Men Jakob fick höra att Labans söner klagade: ”Han har tagit allt vår far ägde, och sin rikedom har han fått på vår fars bekostnad.” 2 Snart märkte Jakob att Laban blev kylig i sin attityd mot honom.

3 Herren talade nu till Jakob och sa till honom: ”Återvänd till dina förfäders land och till dina släktingar där, och jag ska vara med dig.”

4 Därför skickade Jakob en dag efter Rakel och Lea och bad dem komma ut på fälten, där han höll till med hjordarna. 5 ”Jag ser att er far är kyligare mot mig än vad han var tidigare”, sa han till dem. ”Men min fars Gud har varit med mig. 6 Ni vet hur hårt jag har arbetat för er far, så mycket jag orkat, 7 men han har lurat mig och tio gånger ändrat min lön, men Gud har inte tillåtit honom att skada mig. 8 När han sa att de spräckliga djuren skulle bli min lön, födde hela hjorden spräckliga djur och när han sa att jag kunde få de strimmiga djuren, blev alla lammen strimmiga. 9 På så sätt har Gud tagit er fars boskap och gett den till mig.

10 Vid tiden för djurens parning hade jag en dröm och såg att bockarna som parade sig med hjorden var strimmiga, spräckliga och brokiga. 11 I min dröm ropade sedan Guds ängel på mig: ’Jakob!’ Jag svarade: ’Här är jag’. 12 Ängeln sa till mig: ’Alla bockar som parar sig med flocken är brokiga, spräckliga och strimmiga. Jag har nämligen sett allt som Laban har gjort mot dig. 13 Jag är den Gud du mötte i Betel där du smorde en minnessten och gav ett löfte till mig. Lämna nu genast detta land och återvänd till det land där du föddes.’ ”

14 Rakel och Lea svarade: ”Det finns ingenting kvar för oss här av vår fars rikedom. 15 Behandlar han inte oss som främlingar? Han har sålt oss och det han fick för oss, har han redan gjort slut på. 16 De rikedomar som Gud har tagit från vår far tillhör oss och våra barn. Gör därför precis som Gud har sagt till dig!”

Laban förföljer Jakob

17 Jakob lyfte då upp sina barn och sina hustrur på kamelerna. 18 Han tog med sig all sin boskap och all sin egendom som han skaffat sig i Paddan Aram. Så begav han sig hemåt till sin far Isak i Kanaans land. 19 Laban hade gått iväg för att klippa sina får och då stal Rakel sin fars husgudar. 20 Jakob bedrog också araméen Laban genom att ge sig iväg utan förvarning. 21 Han flydde med alla sina ägodelar, gick över floden Eufrat och till Gileads bergsbygd. 22 Laban fick inte reda på att de hade flytt förrän tre dagar senare. 23 Då samlade han sina manliga släktingar och tog upp jakten. Han hann ifatt dem i Gileads bergsbygd efter sju dagar. 24 Den natten kom Gud till araméen Laban i en dröm och sa till honom: ”Akta dig noga för att säga något, vare sig gott eller ont, till Jakob!” 25 Laban kom ifatt Jakob där han hade slagit läger i Gileads bergsbygd och Laban och hans följe slog också läger där.

26 ”Vad menar du med detta?” sa Laban till Jakob. ”Du har lurat mig och rövat bort mina döttrar som fångar, tillfångatagna i strid. 27 Varför smet du iväg och lurade mig? Du sa ingenting och lät mig inte ordna en avskedsfest med sång och spel, med tamburiner och lyror? 28 Varför fick jag inte kyssa mina barnbarn och säga adjö till mina döttrar? Du har burit dig dumt åt! 29 Det skulle stå i min makt att skada dig, men din faders Gud visade sig för mig i natt och sa till mig: ’Akta dig noga för att säga något till Jakob, vare sig gott eller ont.’ 30 Men om du hade en sådan hemlängtan, varför stal du mina husgudar?” 31 ”Jag var rädd”, svarade Jakob. ”Jag trodde att du skulle ta dina döttrar ifrån mig med våld. 32 Men när det gäller dina husgudar ska den du finner dem hos dö! Se efter själv, i våra släktingars närvaro, om du finner en enda sak, som är din, så ta den!” Jakob visste nämligen inte att Rakel hade stulit husgudarna.

33 Laban gick först till Jakobs tält för att söka igenom det, sedan till Leas, och därefter sökte han i de två bihustrurnas tält. Slutligen gick han till Rakels tält. 34 Men Rakel hade gömt husgudarna i kamelsadeln och satt nu på dem. Fastän Laban sökte mycket noggrant i tältet, hittade han dem alltså inte. 35 ”Bli inte arg, min herre, för att jag inte kan resa mig”, sa Rakel till sin far, ”men jag har mina dagar[a] just nu.” Hur han alltså än letade efter sina husgudar, hittade han dem inte.

36 Nu blev Jakob rasande på Laban: ”Vad är mitt brott? Vad har jag gjort för ont? Du har jagat mig som en brottsling! 37 Nu har du letat igenom allt jag äger. Vad har du funnit? Ta nu fram allt som jag har stulit och lägg det här framför oss, framför dina och mina släktingar, så de får döma mellan oss!

38 I tjugo år har jag varit tillsammans med dig. Dina tackor och dina getter har aldrig fött i otid, och jag har aldrig rört en enda av dina baggar för att få mat. 39 Om något djur anfölls och dödades av vilda djur, kom jag aldrig till dig med det. Nej, jag tog på mig förlusten. Du fick mig också att betala för varje djur som stals från hjorden på dagen och även på natten.

40 Jag har arbetat för dig under dagens brännande hetta och under kalla, sömnlösa nätter. 41 Ja, i tjugo år har jag varit hos dig och arbetat – fjorton år för att förtjäna dina två döttrar och sex för att få hjorden. Och du har ändrat min lön tio gånger! 42 Om inte min fars Gud hade varit med mig – Abrahams Gud, som även Isak fruktade – skulle du ha sänt iväg mig tomhänt. Men Gud har sett mitt lidande och mitt hårda arbete, och det är därför som han fällde domen[b] i natt.”

43 Laban svarade: ”Dessa är mina döttrar, barnen är mina, och dessa hjordar och allt du ser här är mitt. Vad kan jag då göra med mina egna döttrar och barnen de fött? 44 Låt oss sluta ett förbund med varandra som ska vara ett vittne mellan dig och mig.”

45 Då tog Jakob en sten och reste den som ett minnesmärke, 46 och han sa till sina släktingar att samla stenar, och de byggde ett stenröse. Sedan åt de en måltid tillsammans på röset. 47 Laban kallade röset Jegar Sahaduta och Jakob kallade det Galed.[c]

48 ”Detta stenröse ska vara ett vittne mellan dig och mig”, sa Laban. Därför fick det heta Galed. 49 Det kallades också Mispa[d], för Laban sa: ”Må Herren vaka över oss, även när vi är utom synhåll för varandra. 50 Om du är hård mot mina döttrar, eller om du tar dig andra hustrur, kom ihåg att även om ingen människa är närvarande är Gud vittne mellan dig och mig.”[e]

51 ”Här är röset och här är stenstoden som jag har rest mellan dig och mig”, sa Laban till Jakob. 52 ”Detta röse och denna stod står mellan oss som vittnen för att jag inte ska gå förbi denna plats för att göra dig något ont och att du inte heller ska passera den för att göra mig något ont. 53 Må Abrahams Gud och Nachors gudar, deras fäders gudar,[f] döma mellan oss.” Då svor Jakob en ed vid honom som hans far Isak fruktade. 54 Sedan offrade Jakob ett slaktoffer på berget och inbjöd sina släktingar till en måltid och tillbringade sedan natten tillsammans med dem på berget. 55 Tidigt nästa morgon steg Laban upp och kysste sina döttrar och barnbarn till farväl och välsignade dem. Sedan återvände han hem.

Time to Leave—Jacob Runs Away

31 One day Jacob heard Laban’s sons talking. They said, “Jacob has taken everything that our father owned. He has become rich—and he has taken all this wealth from our father.” 2 Then Jacob noticed that Laban was not as friendly as he had been in the past. 3 The Lord said to Jacob, “Go back to your own land where your ancestors lived. I will be with you.”

4 So Jacob told Rachel and Leah to meet him in the field where he kept his flocks of sheep and goats. 5 He said to them, “I have noticed that your father is not as friendly with me as he used to be. But the God of my father has been with me. 6 You both know that I have worked as hard as I could for your father. 7 But he cheated me. He has changed my pay ten times. But during all this time, God protected me from all of Laban’s tricks.

8 “At one time Laban said, ‘You can keep all the goats with spots. This will be your pay.’ After he said this, all the animals gave birth to spotted goats, so they were all mine. But then Laban said, ‘I will keep the spotted goats. You can have all the striped goats. That will be your pay.’ After he said this, all the animals gave birth to striped goats. 9 So God has taken the animals away from your father and has given them to me.

10 “I had a dream during the time when the animals were mating. I saw that the only male goats that were mating were the ones with stripes and spots. 11 The angel of God spoke to me in that dream. The angel said, ‘Jacob!’

“I answered, ‘Yes!’

12 “The angel said, ‘Look, only the striped and spotted goats are mating. I am causing this to happen. I have seen all the wrong things Laban has been doing to you. I am doing this so that you can have all the new baby goats. 13 I am the God who came to you at Bethel, and there you made an altar, poured olive oil on it, and made a promise to me. Now I want you to be ready to go back to the country where you were born.’”

14 Rachel and Leah answered Jacob, “Our father has nothing to give us when he dies. 15 He treated us like strangers. He sold us to you, and then he spent all the money that should have been ours. 16 God took all this wealth from our father, and now it belongs to us and our children. So you should do whatever God told you to do.”

17 So Jacob prepared for the trip. He put his children and his wives on camels. 18 Then they began traveling back to the land of Canaan, where his father lived. All the flocks of animals that Jacob owned walked ahead of them. He carried everything with him that he had gotten while he lived in Paddan Aram.

19 While Laban was gone to cut the wool from his sheep, Rachel went into his house and stole the false gods that belonged to her father.

20 Jacob tricked Laban the Aramean. He did not tell Laban he was leaving. 21 Jacob took his family and everything he owned and left quickly. They crossed the Euphrates River and traveled toward the hill country of Gilead.

22 Three days later Laban learned that Jacob had run away. 23 So he gathered his men together and began to chase Jacob. After seven days Laban found Jacob near the hill country of Gilead. 24 That night God came to Laban in a dream and said, “Be careful! Be careful of every word you say to Jacob.”

The Search for the Stolen Gods

25 The next morning Laban caught up with Jacob. Jacob had set up his camp on the mountain, so Laban and all his men set up their camp in the hill country of Gilead.

26 Laban said to Jacob, “Why did you trick me? Why did you take my daughters like they were women you captured during war? 27 Why did you run away without telling me? If you had told me, I would have given you a party. There would have been singing and dancing with music. 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. You were very foolish to do this! 29 I have the power to really hurt you. But last night the God of your father came to me in a dream. He warned me not to hurt you in any way. 30 I know that you want to go back to your home. That is why you left. But why did you steal the gods from my house?”

31 Jacob answered, “I left without telling you, because I was afraid. I thought you would take your daughters away from me. 32 But I did not steal your gods. If you find anyone here with me who has taken your gods, they will be killed. Your men will be my witnesses. You can look for anything that belongs to you. Take anything that is yours.” (Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen Laban’s gods.)

33 So Laban went and looked through Jacob’s camp. He looked in Jacob’s tent and then in Leah’s tent. Then he looked in the tent where the two slave women stayed, but he did not find the gods from his house. Then he went into Rachel’s tent. 34 Rachel had hidden the gods inside her camel’s saddle, and she was sitting on them. Laban looked through the whole tent, but he did not find the gods.

35 And Rachel said to her father, “Father, don’t be angry with me. I am not able to stand up before you. I am having my monthly time of bleeding.” So Laban looked through the camp, but he did not find the gods from his house.

36 Then Jacob became very angry and said, “What wrong have I done? What law have I broken? What right do you have to chase me and stop me? 37 You looked through everything I own and found nothing that belongs to you. If you found something, show it to me. Put it here where our men can see it. Let our men decide which one of us is right. 38 I have worked 20 years for you. During all that time none of the baby sheep and goats died during birth. And I have not eaten any of the rams from your flocks. 39 Any time a sheep was killed by wild animals, I always paid for the loss myself. I did not take the dead animal to you and say that it was not my fault. But I was robbed day and night. 40 In the daytime the sun took away my strength, and at night sleep was taken from my eyes by the cold. 41 I worked 20 years like a slave for you. For the first 14 years I worked to win your two daughters. The last six years I worked to earn your animals. And during that time you changed my pay ten times. 42 But the God of my ancestors, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac,[a] was with me. If God had not been with me, you would have sent me away with nothing. But he saw the trouble that I had and the work that I did, and last night God proved that I am right.”

Jacob and Laban’s Treaty

43 Laban said to Jacob, “These women are my daughters. These children belong to me, and these animals are mine. Everything you see here belongs to me, but I can do nothing to keep my daughters and their children. 44 So I am ready to make an agreement with you. We will set up a pile of stones to show that we have an agreement.”

45 So Jacob found a large rock and put it there to show that he had made an agreement. 46 He told his men to find some more rocks and to make a pile of rocks. Then they ate beside the pile of rocks. 47 Laban named that place Yegar Sahadutha.[b] But Jacob named that place Galeed.[c]

48 Laban said to Jacob, “This pile of rocks will help us both remember our agreement.” That is why Jacob called the place Galeed.

49 Then Laban said, “Let the Lord watch over us while we are separated from each other.” So that place was also named Mizpah.[d]

50 Then Laban said, “If you hurt my daughters, remember that God will punish you. If you marry other women, remember that God is watching. 51 Here are the rocks that I have put between us, and here is the special rock to show that we made an agreement. 52 This pile of rocks and this one special rock both help us to remember our agreement. I will never go past these rocks to fight against you, and you must never go on my side of these rocks to fight against me. 53 May the God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, and the God of their ancestors judge us guilty if we break this agreement.”

Jacob’s father, Isaac, called God “Fear.” So Jacob used that name to make the promise. 54 Then Jacob killed an animal and offered it as a sacrifice on the mountain. And he invited his men to come and share a meal. After they finished eating, they spent the night on the mountain. 55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters goodbye. He blessed them and went back home.

Jacob Flees From Laban

31 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons(A) were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”(B) 2 And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.(C)

3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back(D) to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”(E)

4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were. 5 He said to them, “I see that your father’s(F) attitude toward me is not what it was before,(G) but the God of my father has been with me.(H) 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,(I) 7 yet your father has cheated(J) me by changing my wages(K) ten times.(L) However, God has not allowed him to harm me.(M) 8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’(N) then all the flocks bore streaked young. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock(O) and has given them to me.(P)

10 “In breeding season I once had a dream(Q) in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. 11 The angel of God(R) said to me in the dream,(S) ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’(T) 12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted,(U) for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.(V) 13 I am the God of Bethel,(W) where you anointed a pillar(X) and where you made a vow(Y) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.(Z)’”

14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share(AA) in the inheritance of our father’s estate? 15 Does he not regard us as foreigners?(AB) Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.(AC) 16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children.(AD) So do whatever God has told you.”

17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives(AE) on camels,(AF) 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated(AG) in Paddan Aram,[a](AH) to go to his father Isaac(AI) in the land of Canaan.(AJ)

19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep,(AK) Rachel stole her father’s household gods.(AL) 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived(AM) Laban the Aramean(AN) by not telling him he was running away.(AO) 21 So he fled(AP) with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River,(AQ) and headed for the hill country of Gilead.(AR)

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 On the third day(AS) Laban was told that Jacob had fled.(AT) 23 Taking his relatives(AU) with him(AV), he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.(AW) 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean(AX) in a dream at night and said to him,(AY) “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”(AZ)

25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead(BA) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?(BB) You’ve deceived me,(BC) and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.(BD) 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me,(BE) so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels(BF) and harps?(BG) 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye.(BH) You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you;(BI) but last night the God of your father(BJ) said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’(BK) 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household.(BL) But why did you steal(BM) my gods?(BN)”

31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.(BO) 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live.(BP) In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.(BQ)

33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent(BR) and into the tent of the two female servants,(BS) but he found nothing.(BT) After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods(BU) and put them inside her camel’s saddle(BV) and was sitting on them. Laban searched(BW) through everything in the tent but found nothing.

35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence;(BX) I’m having my period.(BY)” So he searched but could not find the household gods.(BZ)

36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged(CA) you that you hunt me down?(CB) 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household?(CC) Put it here in front of your relatives(CD) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.(CE)

38 “I have been with you for twenty years now.(CF) Your sheep and goats have not miscarried,(CG) nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen(CH) by day or night.(CI) 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.(CJ) 41 It was like this for the twenty years(CK) I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters(CL) and six years for your flocks,(CM) and you changed my wages(CN) ten times.(CO) 42 If the God of my father,(CP) the God of Abraham(CQ) and the Fear of Isaac,(CR) had not been with me,(CS) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,(CT) and last night he rebuked you.(CU)”

43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks.(CV) All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant,(CW) you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”(CX)

45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.(CY) 46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap,(CZ) and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[b](DA)

48 Laban said, “This heap(DB) is a witness between you and me today.”(DC) That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,[c](DD) because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat(DE) my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness(DF) between you and me.”(DG)

51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap,(DH) and here is this pillar(DI) I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness,(DJ) that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap(DK) and pillar to my side to harm me.(DL) 53 May the God of Abraham(DM) and the God of Nahor,(DN) the God of their father, judge between us.”(DO)

So Jacob took an oath(DP) in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.(DQ) 54 He offered a sacrifice(DR) there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal.(DS) After they had eaten, they spent the night there.

55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters(DT) and blessed(DU) them. Then he left and returned home.[d](DV)
