Chapter 8
Famine Predicted. 1 Now Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, “You and your household must get up and go to dwell wherever you can, for the Lord has called a famine down upon the land, and it will last for seven years.”
2 The woman rose up and did what the man of God had told her to do. She and her household went and dwelt in the land of the Philistines for seven years. 3 At the end of seven years, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines. She went to the king and begged for her house and her land.
4 The king had been talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and he had said, “Please tell me all of the great things that Elisha has done.” 5 Just as he was recounting to the king how he had restored a dead body to life, the woman whose son he had restored to life beseeched the king for her house and her land. Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, this is the woman whose son Elisha restored to life.”
6 The king questioned the woman about it, and she told him about it. The king assigned an official for her case, saying, “Restore everything to her, including the produce from the field from the day she left the land up until the present.”
Ben-hadad’s Death Foretold. 7 Elisha went to Damascus, to Ben-hadad, the king of the Arameans, who was ill. He was told, “The man of God has come here.”
8 The king said to Hazael, “Take a present with you and go and meet the man of God. Inquire of the Lord through him, asking, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’ ”
9 Hazael went to meet him, and he took a present of forty camel loads of the finest products of Damascus with him. He stood before him and said, “Ben-hadad the king of Aram, has sent me to you, saying, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’ ” 10 Elisha answered, “Go and say to him, ‘You will surely recover,’ for the Lord has revealed to me that he will surely die.”[a]
11 He continued to stare at him until he became embarrassed. The man of God then began to weep. 12 Hazael asked, “Why is my lord weeping?” He answered, “Because I know what harm you will do to the Israelites. You will burn down their strongholds, you will put their young men to the sword, you will dash their children to the ground, and you will rip open their pregnant women.” 13 Hazael said, “But how could your servant, who is nothing more than a dog,[b] do such a great thing?” Elisha answered, “The Lord has revealed to me that you will be the king of Aram.”
14 He left Elisha and went back to his master who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” He answered, “He told me that you will surely recover.” 15 The next day he took a thick cloth and soaked it in water. He placed it over the king’s face, so that he died. Hazael then reigned in his stead.
16 Reign of Joram of Judah. In the fifth year of the reign of Joram, the son of Ahab, the king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was the king of Judah, Joram, the son of Jehoshaphat, began to reign over Judah. 17 He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem. 18 He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 19 Yet, the Lord would not destroy Judah for the sake of David, his servant, for he had promised to give a light to him and his children forever.
20 During his reign, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up their own king. 21 Joram went to Zair with all of his chariots. He rose up during the night and attacked the Edomites who had surrounded him. The captains of his chariots and his army fled back home. 22 Edom has been in a state of rebellion against Judah up to the present. Libnah rebelled at the same time.
23 As for the other deeds of Joram, what he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
24 Joram slept with his fathers, and he was buried with his fathers in the City of David, and Ahaziah, his son, reigned in his stead.
25 Ahaziah Rules Judah. Ahaziah, the son of Joram, began to reign as the king of Judah during the twelfth year of the reign of Joram, the son of Ahab, the king of Israel. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem for one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah. She was the daughter of Omri, the king of Israel.[c] 27 He walked in the ways of the house of Ahab and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had, for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab.
28 He went to war against Hazael, the king of Aram, at Ramoth-gilead along with Joram, the son of Ahab. The Arameans wounded Joram. 29 Joram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had received from the Arameans at Ramoth when he fought against Hazael, the king of the Arameans.
Ahaziah, the son of Joram, the king of Judah, went down to visit Joram, the son of Ahab, in Jezreel because he was ill.

- 2 Kings 8:13 Nothing more than a dog: this seemingly derogatory designation might be Hazael’s way of declaring his powerlessness to commit the atrocities that Elisha forecasts.
- 2 Kings 8:26 Athaliah, whether the daughter or granddaughter of Omri (see v. 18), acted much as her evil parents Ahab and Jezebel did. After her son Ahaziah is killed in battle, Athaliah wipes out all the male descendants and rules as queen (see 2 Ki 11:1).

8 Y habló Eliseo a aquella mujer a cuyo hijo había hecho vivir, diciendo: Levántate, vete tú y toda tu casa a vivir donde puedas; porque el SEÑOR ha llamado el hambre, la cual vendrá también sobre la tierra siete años.
2 Entonces la mujer se levantó, e hizo como el varón de Dios le dijo; y partió ella con su familia, y vivió en tierra de los filisteos siete años.
3 Y cuando fueron pasados los siete años, la mujer volvió de la tierra de los filisteos; después salió para clamar al rey por su casa, y por sus tierras.
4 Y había el rey hablado con Giezi, criado del varón de Dios, diciéndole: Te ruego que me cuentes todas las maravillas que ha hecho Eliseo.
5 Y contando él al rey cómo había hecho vivir a un muerto, he aquí la mujer, a cuyo hijo había hecho vivir, que clamaba al rey por su casa y por sus tierras. Entonces dijo Giezi: Rey señor mío, esta es la mujer, y este es su hijo, al cual Eliseo hizo vivir.
6 Y preguntando el rey a la mujer, ella se lo contó. Entonces el rey le dio un eunuco, diciéndole: Hazle volver todas las cosas que eran suyas, y todos los frutos de las tierras desde el día que dejó las tierras hasta ahora.
7 ¶ Eliseo se fue luego a Damasco, y Ben-adad rey de Siria estaba enfermo, al cual dieron aviso, diciendo: El varón de Dios ha venido aquí.
8 Y el rey dijo a Hazael: Toma en tu mano un presente, y ve a recibir al varón de Dios, y consulta por él al SEÑOR, diciendo: ¿He de sanar de esta enfermedad?
9 Tomó, pues, Hazael en su mano un presente de todos los bienes de Damasco, cuarenta camellos cargados, y le salió a recibir; y llegó, y se puso delante de él, y dijo: Tu hijo Ben-adad, rey de Siria, me ha enviado a ti, diciendo: ¿He de sanar de esta enfermedad?
10 Y Eliseo le dijo: Ve, dile: Podrás ciertamente sanarse. Pero el SEÑOR me ha mostrado que él ha de morir ciertamente.
11 Y el varón de Dios le miró fijamente, y se estuvo así hasta avergonzarse; y lloró el varón de Dios.
12 Entonces le dijo Hazael: ¿Por qué llora mi señor? Y él respondió: Porque sé el mal que has de hacer a los hijos de Israel; a sus fortalezas pegarás fuego, y a sus jóvenes matarás a espada, y estrellarás a sus niños, y abrirás a sus preñadas.
13 Y Hazael dijo: ¿Por qué? ¿Es tu esclavo perro, que hará esta gran cosa? Y respondió Eliseo: El SEÑOR me ha mostrado que tú has de ser rey de Siria.
14 Y él se fue de Eliseo, y vino a su señor, el cual le dijo: ¿Qué te dijo Eliseo? Y él respondió: Me dijo que podrás ciertamente sanarse.
15 Al día siguiente tomó un paño basto, y lo metió en agua, y lo tendió sobre el rostro de Ben-adad, y murió; y reinó Hazael en su lugar.
16 ¶ En el quinto año de Joram hijo de Acab rey de Israel, siendo Josafat rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joram hijo de Josafat rey de Judá.
17 De treinta y dos años era cuando comenzó a reinar, y ocho años reinó en Jerusalén.
18 Anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel, como hizo la casa de Acab; porque una hija de Acab fue su mujer; e hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR.
19 Con todo eso, el SEÑOR no quiso cortar a Judá, por amor de David su esclavo, como le había prometido darle lámpara de sus hijos perpetuamente.
20 En su tiempo se rebeló Edom de debajo de la mano de Judá, y pusieron rey sobre sí.
21 Joram por tanto pasó a Seir, y todos sus carros con él; y levantándose de noche hirió a los idumeos, los cuales le habían cercado, y a los capitanes de los carros; y el pueblo huyó a sus estancias.
22 Sin embargo Edom se rebeló de bajo la mano de Judá, hasta hoy. Se rebeló además Libna en el mismo tiempo.
23 Los demás hechos de Joram, y todas las cosas que hizo, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá?
24 Y durmió Joram con sus padres, y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David; y reinó en lugar suyo Ocozías, su hijo.
25 En el año doce de Joram hijo de Acab rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Ocozías hijo de Joram rey de Judá.
26 De veintidós años era Ocozías cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó un año en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Atalía hija de Omri rey de Israel.
27 Anduvo en el camino de la casa de Acab, e hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, como la casa de Acab; porque era yerno de la casa de Acab.
28 Y fue a la guerra con Joram hijo de Acab a Ramot de Galaad, contra Hazael rey de Siria; y los Sirios hirieron a Joram.
29 Y el rey Joram se volvió a Jezreel, para curarse de las heridas que los Sirios le hicieron delante de Ramot, cuando peleó contra Hazael rey de Siria. Y descendió Ocozías hijo de Joram rey de Judá, a visitar a Joram hijo de Acab en Jezreel, porque estaba enfermo.

8 (A)Mu biro ebyo Erisa n’agamba omukazi gwe yazuukiriza mutabani we nti, “Golokoka ove wano ogende n’ab’omu nnyumba yo bonna mu nsi gy’oliyinza okubeeramu, kubanga Mukama alireeta ekyeeya mu nsi okumala emyaka musanvu.” 2 Omukazi n’asitukiramu n’akola ng’omusajja wa Katonda bwe yayogera, n’alaga ye n’ab’omu nnyumba ye mu nsi y’Abafirisuuti[a] okumala emyaka musanvu.
3 Oluvannyuma lw’emyaka omusanvu, n’akomawo okuva mu nsi y’Abafirisuuti, n’alaga eri kabaka okumwegayirira addizibwe ekibanja kye n’ennyumba ye. 4 Mu kiseera ekyo kye kimu kabaka yali anyumyamu ne Gekazi omuweereza w’omusajja wa Katonda, nga kabaka amugambye nti, “Ntegeeza ebintu ebikulu byonna Erisa by’akoze.” 5 (B)Awo Gekazi bwe yali ng’akyanyumiza kabaka, engeri Erisa bwe yazuukiza abafu, omukazi eyali ne mutabani we, Erisa gwe yazuukiza n’atuuka, okwegayirira kabaka ng’asaba ekibanja kye n’ennyumba ye. Gekazi n’ayogera nti, “Mukama wange kabaka, ono ye mukazi, era ne mutabani we Erisa gwe yazuukiza y’oyo.” 6 Awo kabaka bwe yabuuza omukazi, n’amutegeeza nti bwe kyali. N’alyoka alagira omu ku bakungu amutereereze ensonga ze; n’amugamba nti, “Muddize buli kintu kyonna ekikye, n’obusuulu bwonna obwa kuŋŋaanyizibwa okuva mu kibanja kye okuva ku lunaku lwe yakivaamu okutuusa kaakano.”
Kazayeeri Atta Benikadadi
7 (C)Erisa n’agenda e Ddamasiko n’asanga Benikadadi kabaka w’e Busuuli ng’alwadde. Kabaka bwe yategeezebwa nti, “Omusajja wa Katonda atuuse mu kitundu,” 8 (D)n’agamba Kazayeeri nti, “Ffuna ekirabo, ogende osisinkane omusajja wa Katonda, weebuuze ku Mukama ng’oyita mu ye oba, ndiwona endwadde eno.”
9 Kazayeeri n’agenda okusisinkana Erisa, n’amutwalira n’ebirabo eby’engeri zonna okuva e Ddamasiko[b], ku ŋŋamira amakumi ana. N’agenda n’ayimirira mu maaso ge, n’amugamba nti, “Mutabani wo Benikadadi kabaka w’e Busuuli antumye okukubuuza nti, ‘Ndiwona endwadde eno?’ ” 10 (E)Erisa n’amuddamu nti, “Genda omutegeeze nti, ‘Ojja kuwona;’ naye Mukama akimbikulidde nti talirema kufa.” 11 (F)N’amutunuulira n’amaaso ag’enkaliriza, okutuusa Kazayeeri bwe yakwatibwa ensonyi, omusajja wa Katonda n’atandika okukaaba.
12 (G)Kazayeeri n’abuuza nti, “Kiki ekikaabya mukama wange?” Erisa n’amuddamu nti, “Kubanga mmanyi obubi bw’olikola Abayisirayiri; olikuma omuliro ku bigo byabwe, n’otta abavubuka baabwe n’ekitala, n’osesebbulira abaana abato ku ttaka, era n’obaaga n’abakyala abali embuto.” 13 (H)Awo Kazayeeri n’addamu nti, “Nze ani omuddu wo, embwa obubwa, ayinza okukola ekintu ng’ekyo?” Erisa n’amuddamu nti, “Mukama akimbikulidde nti ggwe ogenda okubeera kabaka w’e Busuuli.” 14 Awo n’ava mu maaso ga Erisa, n’addayo eri mukama we. Benikadadi n’amubuuza nti, “Erisa yakugambye ki?” Kazayeeri n’amuddamu nti, “Yaŋŋambye nti eky’amazima ojja kuwona.” 15 (I)Naye olunaku olwaddirira, enkeera, n’addira ekiwero ekinene, n’akinnyika mu mazzi, n’akibikka ku maaso ga kabaka, okutuusa bwe yafa. N’oluvannyuma Kazayeeri n’alya obwakabaka mu kifo kye.
Yekolaamu, Kabaka wa Yuda
16 (J)Mu mwaka ogwokutaano nga Yolaamu mutabani wa Akabu ye kabaka wa Isirayiri, Yekolaamu mutabani wa Yekosafaati, kabaka wa Yuda, n’atandika okufuga Yuda. 17 Yalina emyaka amakumi asatu mu ebiri, we yaliira obwakabaka, era n’afugira emyaka munaana mu Yerusaalemi. 18 (K)Yekolaamu n’atambulira mu makubo ga bassekabaka ba Isirayiri ng’ab’ennyumba ya Akabu bwe baakola, n’okuwasa n’awasa omu ku bawala ba Akabu. N’akola ebibi mu maaso ga Mukama. 19 (L)Naye Mukama n’atazikiriza Yuda, ku lwa Dawudi omuddu we, gwe yasuubiza nti alireka ettabaaza ye ng’eyaka n’okutuusa ku bazzukulu be emirembe gyonna.
20 (M)Mu mirembe gya Yekolaamu, Edomu ne bajeemera obufuzi bwa Yuda, ne bassaawo kabaka owaabwe. 21 Awo Yekolaamu[c] n’asomoka n’agenda e Zayiri n’amagaali ge, n’agolokoka mu kiro n’abaduumizi be ne batta Abayedomu abaali bamuzingizza, olwo eggye lye ne lidduka okuddayo ewaabwe. 22 (N)Okuva mu kiseera ekyo Edomu n’ajeemera obufuzi bwa Yuda n’okutuusa ku lunaku lwa leero. Mu kiseera kye kimu ab’e Libuna nabo ne bajeema.
23 Ebyafaayo ebirala ebyabaawo ku mulembe gwa Yekolaamu, ne bye yakola byonna, tebyawandiikibwa mu kitabo eky’ebyomumirembe gya bassekabaka ba Yuda? 24 Yekolaamu n’afa n’aziikibwa ku biggya bya bajjajjaabe mu kibuga kya Dawudi. Akaziya mutabani we n’amusikira.
Akaziya, Kabaka wa Yuda
25 (O)Mu mwaka ogw’ekkumi n’ebiri nga Yolaamu mutabani wa Akabu ye kabaka wa Isirayiri, Akaziya mutabani wa Yekolaamu kabaka wa Yuda, n’atandika okufuga Yuda. 26 (P)Akaziya yalina emyaka amakumi abiri mu ebiri we yaliira obwakabaka, n’afugira omwaka gumu mu Yerusaalemi. Erinnya lya nnyina ye yali Asaliya[d], muzzukulu wa Omuli kabaka wa Isirayiri. 27 (Q)N’atambulira mu makubo ga b’ennyumba ya Akabu n’akola ebibi mu maaso ga Mukama, ng’ab’omu nnyumba ya Akabu bwe baakola, kubanga yali mukoddomi wa nnyumba ya Akabu.
28 (R)Akaziya n’agenda ne Yolaamu mutabani wa Akabu okutabaala Kazayeeri kabaka w’e Busuuli e Lamosugireyaadi, era eyo Abasuuli ne bafumitirayo Yolaamu, n’afunirayo ebiwundu. 29 (S)Awo kabaka Yolaamu n’addayo e Yezuleeri okumujjanjaba ebiwundu Abasuuli bye baamuleetako ng’ali e Lama, bwe yali ng’alwanagana ne Kazayeeri kabaka w’e Busuuli. Akaziya mutabani wa Yekolaamu kabaka wa Yuda n’aserengeta e Yezuleeri okulaba ku Yolaamu mutabani wa Akabu, kubanga yali afumitiddwa ebiwundu.
