19 以利沙对他们说：“这不是那道，也不是那城。你们跟我去，我必领你们到所寻找的人那里。”于是领他们到了撒马利亚。
20 他们进了撒马利亚，以利沙祷告说：“耶和华啊，求你开这些人的眼目，使他们能看见。”耶和华开他们的眼目，他们就看见了，不料，是在撒马利亚的城中。 21 以色列王见了他们，就问以利沙说：“我父啊，我可以击杀他们吗？” 22 回答说：“不可击杀他们。就是你用刀用弓掳来的，岂可击杀他们呢[a]？当在他们面前设摆饮食，使他们吃喝，回到他们的主人那里。” 23 王就为他们预备了许多食物。他们吃喝完了，打发他们回到他们主人那里。从此，亚兰军不再犯以色列境了。

Finding the Lost Ax. 1 The sons of the prophets came to Elisha and said, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small. 2 Let us go to the Jordan. Each of us can take a pole, and we can make a place for ourselves there.” He answered, “Go.”
3 One of them said, “Will you please go with your servants.” He answered, “I will go.” 4 He went with them and they came to the Jordan and began to cut down trees.
5 One of the men was cutting down a tree, but the iron ax head fell into the water. He cried out, “Woe is me, master, for it was borrowed.” 6 The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” So he showed him the place. He cut down a stick and tossed it there, and it made the iron float. 7 He said, “Pick it up.” So he stretched out his hand and grabbed it.
Aramean Ambush. 8 Now the king of Aram was fighting against Israel. He conferred with his servants saying, “I will set up my camp over there.”
9 The man of God sent word to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware of passing by that place, for the Arameans have gone down there.” 10 The king of Israel sent men to the place that the man of God had indicated. He warned him and saved him more than once or twice.
11 The king of Aram was enraged at this, and he summoned his servants and said, “Will you not let me know which of us has sided with the king of Israel?” 12 One of his servants answered, “No one, my lord, O king. It is Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, who tells the king of Israel whatever you say in your bed chamber.”
13 He said, “Go find out where he is so that I can send and capture him.” He was told, “He is in Dothan.”[a] 14 He sent horses and chariots and a large army there. They arrived at night and surrounded the city.
15 Early the next morning, when the servant of the man of God got up and went out, behold, he saw an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. His servant said to him, “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?” 16 He answered, “Do not be afraid. There are more with us than with them.”
17 Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes so that he might see.” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and he looked, and behold, the hill was covered with horses and chariots and fire all around Elisha.
18 As they came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Strike this people with blindness.” They were stricken with blindness, as Elisha had said. 19 Then Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you are seeking.” He led them to Samaria.
20 When they entered Samaria, Elisha said, “Open the eyes of these men, O Lord, so that they might see.” The Lord opened their eyes and they saw that they were in the middle of Samaria.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, “Shall I kill them, my father? Shall I kill them?” 22 He answered, “Do not kill them! Would you kill someone whom you had taken with the sword or the bow? Give them bread and water so that they can eat and drink and go back to their master.”
23 He prepared a great feast for them, and when they finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. No more Aramean raiding parties came into the land of Israel.
24 Sometime later, Ben-hadad, the king of Aram, assembled his whole army and he went up and laid siege to Samaria. 25 There was a terrible famine in Samaria, and they continued the siege until a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter of a kab of dove’s dung sold for five shekels of silver.
26 [b]As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, “Help me, my lord, O king.” 27 He said, “If the Lord does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?”
28 The king said to her, “What do you want?” She said, “This woman said to me, ‘Give me your son, so that we can eat him today. We can eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 So we cooked my son and we ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give me your son so that we can eat him,’ but she hid her son.”
30 When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore his clothes. As he walked along on the wall, the people looked up and they saw that he was wearing sackcloth underneath his clothes. 31 He said, “May God do this to me and more if the head of Elisha, the son of Shaphat, remains on his body today.”
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a man to him, but even before the messenger arrived, he said to the elders, “Do you not see how he has sent this son of a murderer to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger arrives, shut and bar the door against him. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”
33 As he was still talking, the messenger came down to him. He said, “This disaster is from the Lord. Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”

2 Vamos ahora al Jordán, y tomemos de allí cada uno una viga, y hagámonos allí lugar en que habitemos. Y él dijo: Andad.
3 Y dijo uno: Te rogamos que quieras venir con tus esclavos. Y él respondió: Yo iré.
4 Se fue, pues, con ellos; y cuando llegaron al Jordán, cortaron la madera.
5 Y aconteció que derribando uno un árbol, se le cayó el hacha en el agua; y dio voces, diciendo: ¡Ay, señor mío, que era prestada!
6 Y el varón de Dios dijo: ¿Dónde cayó? Y él le mostró el lugar. Entonces cortó él un palo, y lo echó allí; e hizo nadar el hierro.
7 Y él le dijo: Tómalo. Y él tendió la mano, y lo tomó.
8 ¶ Tenía el rey de Siria guerra contra Israel, y consultando con sus esclavos, dijo: En tal y tal lugar estará mi campamento.
9 Y el varón de Dios envió a decir al rey de Israel: Mira que no pases por tal lugar, porque los sirios van allí.
10 Entonces el rey de Israel envió a aquel lugar que el varón de Dios había dicho; de la cual le había amonestado; y se guardó de allí, no una vez ni dos.
11 Y el corazón del rey de Siria fue turbado de esto; y llamando a sus esclavos, les dijo: ¿No me declararéis vosotros quién de los nuestros es del rey de Israel?
12 Entonces uno de los esclavos dijo: No, rey, señor mío; sino que el profeta Eliseo está en Israel, el cual declara al rey de Israel las palabras que tú hablas en tu más secreta cámara.
13 Y él dijo: Id, y mirad dónde está, para que yo envíe a tomarlo. Y le fue dicho: He aquí él está en Dotán. {Heb. dos pozos}
14 Entonces envió el rey allá gente de a caballo, y carros, y un gran ejército, los cuales vinieron de noche, y cercaron la ciudad.
15 Y levantándose de mañana el que servía al varón de Dios, para salir, he aquí el ejército que tenía cercada la ciudad, con gente de a caballo y carros. Entonces su criado le dijo: ¡Ay, señor mío! ¿qué haremos?
16 Y él le dijo: No tengas miedo; porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.
17 Y oró Eliseo, y dijo: Te ruego, oh SEÑOR, que abras sus ojos para que vea. Entonces el SEÑOR abrió los ojos del joven, y miró; y he aquí que el monte estaba lleno de gente de a caballo, y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo.
18 Y cuando los sirios descendieron a él, Eliseo oró al SEÑOR, y dijo: Te ruego que hieras a esta gente con ceguedad. Y los hirió con ceguedad, conforme al dicho de Eliseo.
19 Y Eliseo les dijo: No es éste el camino, ni es ésta la ciudad; seguidme, que yo os guiaré al hombre que buscáis. Y los guió a Samaria.
20 Y cuando llegaron a Samaria, dijo Eliseo: SEÑOR, abre los ojos de éstos, para que vean. Y el SEÑOR abrió sus ojos, y miraron, y he aquí se hallaron en medio de Samaria.
21 Y cuando los vio, el rey de Israel dijo a Eliseo: ¿Los heriré? ¿Los heriré, padre mío?
22 Y él le respondió: No los hieras; ¿herirías tú a los que tomaste cautivos con tu espada y con tu arco? Pon delante de ellos pan y agua, para que coman y beban, y se vuelvan a su señor.
23 Entonces les fue aparejada grande comida; y cuando habían comido y bebido, los envió, y ellos se volvieron a su señor. Y nunca más vinieron escuadrones de Siria a la tierra de Israel.
24 ¶ Después de esto aconteció, que Ben-adad rey de Siria juntó todo su ejército, y subió, y puso cerco a Samaria.
25 Y hubo grande hambre en Samaria, teniendo ellos cerco sobre ella; tanto, que la cabeza de un asno era vendida por ochenta piezas de plata, y la cuarta de un cabo de estiércol de palomas por cinco piezas de plata.
26 Y pasando el rey de Israel por el muro, una mujer le dio voces, y dijo: Salva, rey señor mío.
27 Y él dijo: Si no te salva el SEÑOR, ¿de dónde te puedo salvar yo? ¿Del alfolí, o del lagar?
28 Y le dijo el rey: ¿Qué tienes? Y ella respondió: Esta mujer me dijo: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo hoy, y mañana comeremos el mío.
29 Cocimos, pues, mi hijo, y le comimos. El día siguiente yo le dije: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo. Mas ella ha escondido su hijo.
30 Y cuando el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, rasgó sus vestidos, y pasó así por el muro; y el pueblo vio el cilicio que traía interiormente sobre su carne.
31 Y él dijo: Así me haga Dios, y así me añada, si la cabeza de Eliseo hijo de Safat quedare sobre él hoy.
32 Y Eliseo sentado en su casa, y con él estaban sentados los ancianos; y el rey envió a él un varón. Mas antes que el mensajero viniera a él, dijo él a los ancianos: ¿No habéis visto como este hijo del homicida me envía a quitarme la cabeza? Mirad, pues, y cuando viniere el mensajero, cerrad la puerta, e impedidle la entrada; ¿no viene tras él el estruendo de los pies de su amo?
33 Aun estaba él hablando con ellos, y he aquí el mensajero que descendía a él; y dijo: Ciertamente este mal del SEÑOR viene. ¿Para qué he de esperar más al SEÑOR?

The Miracle of the Ax Head
6 One day the Guild of Prophets told Elisha, “Notice how the place where we are living is too small for us. 2 Let’s go to the Jordan River,[a] fashion some rafters,[b] and build a place for us so we can live there.”
So he said, “Go!”
3 Someone asked, “Would you be willing to come with your servants?”
“I’m willing,” he replied. 4 So he accompanied them, and when they came to the Jordan River,[c] they cut down some trees.
5 It happened that as one of them was felling a beam, his axe head fell into the water. He cried out, “Oh no! Master! The axe was on loan to me!”
6 The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he was shown the place, he cut off a branch, tossed it there, and made the iron axe head float. 7 Then Elisha said, “Pick it up!” So the young man reached out and picked it[d] up.
The Arameans Attack
8 Eventually the king of Aram went to war against Israel, taking counsel with his advisors and concluding, “In such and such a place I’ll build my encampment.”
9 So the man of God sent a message[e] to the king of Israel, warning him, “Keep an eye on that area, because the Arameans are going to be there!” 10 The king of Israel confirmed the matter[f] about which the man of God had warned him. Having been forewarned, he was able to protect himself there on more than one or two occasions.
11 The king of Aram flew into a rage over this, so he called in his advisors and asked them, “Will you please tell me which of us has joined the king of Israel?”
12 “No, your majesty,” one of his servants said. “Elisha the prophet, who lives in Israel, tells the king of Israel what you talk about in your bedroom!”
13 So the king[g] ordered, “Go and discover where he is, so I may send men[h] to take him into custody.”
Later somebody told him, “Look! He’s in Dothan!”
14 So the king of Aram[i] sent out horses, chariots, and an elite force, and they arrived during the night and surrounded the city. 15 Meanwhile, the attendant to the man of God got up early in the morning and went outside, and there were the elite forces, surrounding the city, accompanied by horses and chariots! So Elisha’s attendant cried out to him, “Oh no! Master! What will we do!?”
16 Elisha[j] replied, “Stop being afraid, because there are more with us than with them!” 17 Then Elisha prayed, asking the Lord, “Please make him able to really see!” And so when the Lord enabled the young man to see, he looked, and there was the mountain, filled with horses and fiery chariots surrounding Elisha!
18 When the army approached him, Elisha spoke to the Lord, asking him, “Lord, I’m asking you please to afflict this group of people with blindness!” So he afflicted them with blindness, just as Elisha had asked.
19 Then Elisha told the army, “This isn’t the way, and this isn’t the city! Follow me, and I’ll bring you to the man you’re seeking.” Then he led them to Samaria. 20 When they arrived in Samaria, Elisha asked the Lord, “Enable them to see again.” So the Lord did so, and there they were—right in the middle of Samaria!
21 When the king of Israel saw Elisha, he asked him, “Shall I execute them, my father?”
22 But he replied, “No! You’re not to kill them! Would you execute those whom you’ve taken captive at the point of a sword or with your bow? Give them food and water so they can eat and drink. Then send them back to their master!” 23 So he prepared a large festival for them, and when they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them back to their master, and marauding gangs of Arameans never came into the territory of Israel again.
Ben-hadad Attacks Samaria
24 Some time later, King Ben-hadad from Aram mustered his army, invaded the land,[k] and attacked Samaria 25 until there was a great famine throughout Samaria. The siege lasted until a donkey’s head cost[l] 80 silver coins[m] and one quarter of a unit[n] of dove’s dung cost[o] five silver coins.[p]
26 While the king of Israel was walking along the city[q] wall, a woman cried out to him. “Help me, your majesty!”[r] she said.
27 He replied, “No! Since the Lord won’t give you victory, how will I be able to deliver you? From the threshing floor? From the wine press?” 28 Then the king asked her, “What’s bothering[s] you?”
She said, “This woman told me, ‘Give up your son, and we’ll eat him today, and we’ll eat my son tomorrow.’” 29 So we boiled my son and ate him. The next day, I told her, ‘Give me your son so we can eat him!’ But she has hidden her son!”
30 When the king heard what the woman said, he ripped his garments as he continued walking along the city[t] wall. As the people watched, all of a sudden they noticed he was wearing sackcloth underneath his clothes, inside next to his flesh! 31 He said, “May God do to me—and more also!—if the head of Shaphat’s son Elisha remains on his shoulders[u] today!”
32 Meanwhile, Elisha was sitting in his house, along with the elders, when the king[v] sent a man to kill him,[w] but before the messenger arrived, Elisha[x] told the elders, “Are you watching how this descendant of murderers has ordered my head be cut off? Look, when the messenger arrives, shut the door and hold it to shut them out! Don’t you hear the sound of his master’s feet right behind him?”
33 While he was still talking with them, the messenger arrived to see him and delivered the king’s message to Elisha,[y] “Look! This evil has come from the Lord! Why should I wait for the Lord anymore?”
