La carpa temporal del encuentro
33 El SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés:
—Tú y el pueblo que sacaste de Egipto deben salir de aquí e irse a la tierra que les prometí a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob diciendo: Se las daré a sus descendientes. 2 Voy a mandar a un ángel delante de ti y voy a sacar a los cananeos, amorreos, heteos, ferezeos y jebuseos de su tierra. 3 Vayan a la tierra que rebosa de leche y de miel. Yo no los voy a acompañar porque ustedes son muy tercos. Si voy con ustedes podría terminar destruyéndolos en el camino.
4 El pueblo escuchó esa mala noticia y se puso muy triste. Nadie se puso las joyas 5 porque el SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés:
—Dile al pueblo de Israel: “Ustedes son muy tercos. Puedo llegar a destruirlos, incluso si viajo sólo por un momento con ustedes. Quítense todas las joyas mientras decido qué voy a hacer con ustedes”.
6 Entonces el pueblo dejó de usar sus joyas a partir del monte Horeb.
7 Moisés tomó la carpa, la armó a cierta distancia afuera del campamento y la llamó la carpa del encuentro. Aquel que quería pedirle algo al SEÑOR debía ir a la carpa del encuentro, fuera del campamento. 8 Cuando Moisés iba a la carpa, todos se ponían de pie y cada uno se paraba en la entrada de su carpa. Observaban a Moisés hasta cuando entraba en la carpa. 9 Cuando Moisés entraba en la carpa, una columna de nube bajaba y se colocaba frente a la entrada de la carpa del encuentro. Luego el Señor le hablaba a Moisés. 10 Cuando el pueblo veía la columna de nube frente a la entrada de la carpa del encuentro, se inclinaba frente a la entrada de su propia carpa.
11 El SEÑOR le hablaba a Moisés cara a cara, como quien le habla a un amigo. Cuando Moisés regresaba al campamento, su siervo Josué, hijo de Nun, no se alejaba de la Carpa de reunión.
Moisés ve la gloria del Señor
12 Moisés le dijo al SEÑOR:
—Tú me dijiste que guiara a este pueblo pero no me dijiste a quién ibas a mandar conmigo. También me dijiste que me conocías muy bien y estabas contento conmigo. 13 Si en verdad estás contento conmigo, enséñame tus planes para así seguir siendo de tu agrado. Acuérdate de que todo este pueblo es tuyo.
14 —Yo mismo te voy a guiar[a]—dijo el Señor.
15 Luego Moisés le dijo:
—Si tú no vas a ir con nosotros, entonces no nos hagas ir de aquí. 16 ¿Cómo voy a saber que estás contento con tu pueblo y conmigo si no vas a acompañarnos? Si nos acompañas, tu pueblo y yo podremos distinguirnos de todas los otras naciones de la tierra.
17 El SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés:
—Voy a hacer lo que me pides porque estoy contento contigo y te conozco por tu nombre.
18 Moisés dijo:
—Te ruego que me dejes ver tu gloria.
19 Y él dijo:
—Voy a hacer que toda mi bondad pase ante ti y pronunciaré mi nombre, YAVÉ, delante de ti. Tendré misericordia de quien yo quiera y tendré compasión de quien yo quiera. 20 Pero no vas a poder ver mi cara porque ningún ser humano puede ver mi cara y seguir con vida.
21 »Aquí hay un lugar cerca de mí, el SEÑOR, donde tú puedes colocarte en la roca. 22 Cuando mi gloria pase por ese lugar, te meteré en una grieta de la roca y te cubriré con mi mano hasta que yo haya pasado. 23 Cuando quite la mano, podrás ver mi espalda pero no mi rostro.

33 Jehová dijo a Moisés: Anda, sube de aquí, tú y el pueblo que sacaste de la tierra de Egipto, a la tierra de la cual juré a Abraham,(A) Isaac(B) y Jacob,(C) diciendo: A tu descendencia la daré; 2 y yo enviaré delante de ti el ángel, y echaré fuera al cananeo y al amorreo, al heteo, al ferezeo, al heveo y al jebuseo 3 (a la tierra que fluye leche y miel); pero yo no subiré en medio de ti, porque eres pueblo de dura cerviz, no sea que te consuma en el camino.
4 Y oyendo el pueblo esta mala noticia, vistieron luto, y ninguno se puso sus atavíos. 5 Porque Jehová había dicho a Moisés: Di a los hijos de Israel: Vosotros sois pueblo de dura cerviz; en un momento subiré en medio de ti, y te consumiré. Quítate, pues, ahora tus atavíos, para que yo sepa lo que te he de hacer. 6 Entonces los hijos de Israel se despojaron de sus atavíos desde el monte Horeb.
7 Y Moisés tomó el tabernáculo, y lo levantó lejos, fuera del campamento, y lo llamó el Tabernáculo de Reunión. Y cualquiera que buscaba a Jehová, salía al tabernáculo de reunión que estaba fuera del campamento. 8 Y sucedía que cuando salía Moisés al tabernáculo, todo el pueblo se levantaba, y cada cual estaba en pie a la puerta de su tienda, y miraban en pos de Moisés, hasta que él entraba en el tabernáculo. 9 Cuando Moisés entraba en el tabernáculo, la columna de nube descendía y se ponía a la puerta del tabernáculo, y Jehová hablaba con Moisés. 10 Y viendo todo el pueblo la columna de nube que estaba a la puerta del tabernáculo, se levantaba cada uno a la puerta de su tienda y adoraba. 11 Y hablaba Jehová a Moisés cara a cara, como habla cualquiera a su compañero. Y él volvía al campamento; pero el joven Josué hijo de Nun, su servidor, nunca se apartaba de en medio del tabernáculo.
12 Y dijo Moisés a Jehová: Mira, tú me dices a mí: Saca este pueblo; y tú no me has declarado a quién enviarás conmigo. Sin embargo, tú dices: Yo te he conocido por tu nombre, y has hallado también gracia en mis ojos. 13 Ahora, pues, si he hallado gracia en tus ojos, te ruego que me muestres ahora tu camino, para que te conozca, y halle gracia en tus ojos; y mira que esta gente es pueblo tuyo. 14 Y él dijo: Mi presencia irá contigo, y te daré descanso. 15 Y Moisés respondió: Si tu presencia no ha de ir conmigo, no nos saques de aquí. 16 ¿Y en qué se conocerá aquí que he hallado gracia en tus ojos, yo y tu pueblo, sino en que tú andes con nosotros, y que yo y tu pueblo seamos apartados de todos los pueblos que están sobre la faz de la tierra?
17 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: También haré esto que has dicho, por cuanto has hallado gracia en mis ojos, y te he conocido por tu nombre. 18 Él entonces dijo: Te ruego que me muestres tu gloria. 19 Y le respondió: Yo haré pasar todo mi bien delante de tu rostro, y proclamaré el nombre de Jehová delante de ti; y tendré misericordia del que tendré misericordia, y seré clemente para con el que seré clemente.(D) 20 Dijo más: No podrás ver mi rostro; porque no me verá hombre, y vivirá. 21 Y dijo aún Jehová: He aquí un lugar junto a mí, y tú estarás sobre la peña; 22 y cuando pase mi gloria, yo te pondré en una hendidura de la peña, y te cubriré con mi mano hasta que haya pasado. 23 Después apartaré mi mano, y verás mis espaldas; mas no se verá mi rostro.

Moses and the Tent of Meeting
33 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Go! Go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land of which (A)I swore to Abraham, (B)to Isaac, and (C)to Jacob, saying, ‘(D)To your seed I will give it.’ 2 And I will send (E)an angel before you, and (F)I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 3 Go up to a land (G)flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst because you are (H)a stiff-necked people, lest (I)I consume you on the way.”
4 Then the people heard this [a]sad word and (J)went into mourning; and none of them put on his ornaments. 5 So Yahweh said to Moses, “Say to the sons of Israel, ‘You are (K)a stiff-necked people; should I go up in your midst for one moment, I would consume you. So now, put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what I shall do with you.’” 6 So the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.
7 Now Moses used to take (L)the tent and pitch it outside the camp, a good distance from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And (M)everyone who sought Yahweh would go out to the tent of meeting which was outside the camp. 8 And it happened whenever Moses went out to the tent, that all the people would arise and stand, each at the entrance of his tent, and gaze after Moses until he entered the tent. 9 And it happened whenever Moses entered the tent, that (N)the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; (O)and [b]Yahweh would speak with Moses. 10 And all the people would see the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent. And all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. 11 Thus (P)Yahweh used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. Then [c]Moses would return to the camp, and (Q)his attendant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
Moses and the Glory of Yahweh
12 Then Moses said to Yahweh, “See, You say to me, ‘(R)Bring up this people!’ But You Yourself have not let me know (S)whom You will send with me. (T)Moreover, You have said, ‘I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ 13 So now, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, (U)let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. (V)See also, that this nation is Your people.” 14 And He said, “(W)My presence shall go with you, and (X)I will give you rest.” 15 Then he said to Him, “(Y)If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. 16 Indeed, how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that (Z)we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the [d]earth?”
17 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; (AA)for you have found favor in My sight, and I have known you by name.” 18 (AB)Then [e]Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!” 19 And He said, “(AC)I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of Yahweh before you; and (AD)I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will show compassion on whom I will show compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face, (AE)for no man can see Me and live!” 21 Then Yahweh said, “Behold, there is a place [f]by Me, and (AF)you shall stand there on the rock; 22 and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and (AG)cover you with My hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove My hand, and you shall see My back, but (AH)My face shall not be seen.”
