王的宣告
4 尼布甲尼撒王向住在全地的各国、各族和说各种语言的人宣告说：“愿你们大享平安！ 2 我乐意把至高的 神向我所行的神迹奇事宣扬出来。
3 他的神迹多么伟大，
他的奇事多么有力；
他的国是永远的国，
他的统治直到万代！（本章第1~3节在《马索拉文本》为3:31~33）
4 “我尼布甲尼撒安逸地住在家中，在宫里享受荣华富贵。（本节在《马索拉文本》为4:1） 5 我作了一个梦，这梦使我惧怕；我在床上所见的梦幻和我脑海中出现的异象，都使我惊惶。 6 我就下令把巴比伦所有的智慧人，都带到我面前来，要他们把梦的意思向我说明。 7 于是术士、用法术的、迦勒底人和占星家都进来；我当面把那梦告诉了他们，可是他们却不能把梦的意思向我说明。
把梦告诉但以理
8 “最后，那照着我神的名，称为伯提沙撒的但以理，来到我面前，他里面有圣神的灵，我就把梦告诉他： 9 ‘术士的领袖伯提沙撒啊！因为我知道你里面有圣神的灵，没有甚么隐秘的事能难倒你；因此，你要把我梦中所见的异象和梦的意思告诉我。 10 我躺在床上时脑海中所见的异象是这样：
我看见大地中间，
有一棵树，十分高大。
11 那树渐长，而且坚强，
高达于天，
地极所有的人都看得到。
12 它的叶子美丽，果实繁多，
所有的生物都从它得到食物；
野地的走兽在它下面歇息，
空中的飞鸟栖宿在它的枝头上；
各种生物都从它得着供养。
13 “‘我躺在床上，在我脑海出现的异象中，我看见有一位守望者，就是圣者，从天上下来， 14 大声呼叫，这样说：
你们要砍下这树，削断枝子，
摇落叶子，打散果子，
把树下的走兽赶散，
把树枝上的飞鸟赶走。
15 然而，树根的余干却要留在地上，
用铁和铜的链子围住，
留在野地的青草中，
使他被天露滴湿；
使他像走兽一样在地上的草丛中得他的分。
16 使他的心改变，不再是人的心，
给他一个兽心，
使他经过七年的时期。
17 这是守望者宣告的裁决，
是圣者颁布的决定，
好使世人都知道：
至高者在世人的国中掌权，
他喜欢把国赐给谁，就赐给谁，
甚至立最卑微的人执掌国权。
18 “‘这就是我尼布甲尼撒王所作的梦。伯提沙撒啊！你要把这梦的意思告诉我，因为我国中所有的智慧人都不能把梦的意思向我说明；只有你能，因为你里面有圣神的灵。’”

19 于是那称为伯提沙撒的但以理惊愕片时，他想到的事使他惊惶。王对他说：“伯提沙撒啊！别让这梦和梦的意思使你惊惶。”伯提沙撒回答说：“我主啊！愿这梦归给憎恨你的人，梦的意思归给你的敌人。 20 你所见的树渐长，而且坚强，高达于天，全地的人都看得到。 21 它的叶子美丽，果实繁多，所有的生物都从它得到食物；野地的走兽住在它下面，空中的飞鸟栖在它的枝头上。 22 王啊！你就是那树，越来越伟大坚强；你的威势渐长，高达于天；你的权柄直到地极。 23 王既然看见一位守望者，就是圣者，从天上下来，说：‘你们要砍下毁坏这树，树根的余干却要留在地上，用铁和铜的链子围住，留在野地的青草中，使他被天露滴湿；使他的分和野地的走兽一样，直到他经过那七年的时期。’ 24 王啊！梦的意思就是这样：这临到我主我王的事，是至高者的裁决。 25 你必被赶逐，离开人群，和野地的走兽同住；你必像牛一样吃草，被天露滴湿，要经过七年的时期；等到你承认至高者在世人的国中掌权，他喜欢把国赐给谁，就赐给谁。 26 守望者既然吩咐要留下树根的余干，所以，等到你承认上天的至高者是掌权的，你的国就必再归给你。 27 因此，王啊！请你接纳我的劝告，施行公义，断绝罪过，怜悯受欺压者，断绝罪孽，你的平安或者可以延长。”
梦境应验
28 这一切事都在尼布甲尼撒王身上实现了。 29 过了十二个月，王在巴比伦王宫的平顶上散步的时候， 30 他说：“这大巴比伦城不是我用大能大力建造作我的京都，为显我威严的荣耀吗？” 31 这话在王的口中还没有说完，就有声音从天上传下来，说：“尼布甲尼撒王啊！有话对你说：你的王权被褫夺了。 32 你必被赶逐，离开人群，和野地的走兽同住；你必像牛一样吃草，要经过七年的时期；等到你承认至高者在世人的国中掌权，他喜欢把国赐给谁，就赐给谁。” 33 这话立刻就应验在尼布甲尼撒身上；他被赶逐，离开人群，像牛一样吃草，身体被天露滴湿，直到他的头发长得像鹰毛，指甲像鸟爪。
34 “七年的日子满了，我尼布甲尼撒举目望天，我的理智恢复过来，我就称颂至高者，赞美尊崇活到永远的 神。
他的统治永无穷尽，
他的国度直到万代。
35 地上所有的居民，在他来说都是虚无；
在天上的万军中，他凭自己的意旨行事；
在地上的居民中，也是这样；
没有人能拦住他的手，
或问他说：‘你作甚么？’
36 “那时，我的理智恢复过来后，为着我国的光荣，我的威严和光辉也都恢复过来了。我的谋臣和官员仍来求见我，我的王权重新坚立，我的权势越发增加。 37 现在我尼布甲尼撒赞美、尊崇、荣耀天上的王，因为他所作的一切都正确，他所行的也都公平；行为骄傲的，他都能贬低。”

4 Moi, Nabuchodonosor, je vivais tranquille dans ma maison et je jouissais de la prospérité dans mon palais. 2 J’ai alors fait un rêve qui m’a rempli d’effroi ; les pensées qui m’ont hanté sur mon lit et les visions de mon esprit m’ont épouvanté. 3 J’ai donc ordonné de convoquer auprès de moi tous les sages de Babylone, pour qu’ils me fassent connaître l’interprétation de mon rêve. 4 Les mages, les magiciens, les astrologues et les devins se sont présentés. Je leur ai exposé le rêve, mais ils n’ont pas pu m’en faire connaître l’interprétation.
5 A la fin, s’est présenté devant moi Daniel, nommé aussi Beltshatsar, d’après le nom de mon dieu[a]. L’esprit des dieux saints réside en lui. Je lui ai raconté mon rêve et je lui ai dit : 6 Beltshatsar, chef des mages, je sais que l’esprit des dieux saints réside en toi, et qu’aucun mystère n’est trop difficile pour toi, écoute donc les visions que j’ai eues dans mon rêve et donne-m’en l’interprétation. 7 Voici quelles étaient les visions de mon esprit pendant que j’étais couché sur mon lit : je regardais et voici ce que j’ai vu :
Au milieu de la terre ╵se dressait un grand arbre, ╵dont la hauteur était immense.
8 L’arbre grandit ╵et devint vigoureux.
Son sommet atteignait le ciel ;
et l’on pouvait le voir ╵depuis les confins de la terre.
9 Son feuillage était magnifique
et ses fruits abondants.
Il portait de la nourriture ╵pour tout être vivant.
Les animaux sauvages ╵venaient s’abriter à son ombre
et les oiseaux ╵se nichaient dans ses branches.
Tous les êtres vivants ╵se nourrissaient de ses produits.
10 Pendant que, sur mon lit, je contemplais les visions de mon esprit, je vis apparaître un de ceux qui veillent[b], un saint qui descendait du ciel. 11 Il cria d’une voix forte :
« Abattez l’arbre ! ╵Coupez ses branches !
Arrachez son feuillage ╵et dispersez ses fruits,
et que les animaux ╵s’enfuient de dessous lui,
que les oiseaux ╵quittent ses branches !
12 Laissez cependant dans la terre ╵la souche et ses racines,
liées de chaînes de fer et de bronze
au milieu de l’herbe des champs.
Qu’il soit trempé ╵de la rosée du ciel,
qu’il se nourrisse d’herbe ╵avec les animaux.
13 Cet homme perdra la raison
et se prendra pour une bête
jusqu’à ce qu’aient passé sept temps[c].
14 Cette sentence ╵est un décret de ceux qui veillent ;
cette résolution ╵est un ordre des saints,
afin que tous les vivants sachent ╵que le Très-Haut domine ╵sur toute royauté humaine,
qu’il accorde la royauté ╵à qui il veut,
et qu’il établit roi ╵le plus insignifiant des hommes. »
15 Tel est le rêve que j’ai eu, moi le roi Nabuchodonosor. Quant à toi, Beltshatsar, donne-m’en l’interprétation puisque tous les sages de mon royaume s’en sont montrés incapables ; mais toi, tu le peux, car l’esprit des dieux saints réside en toi.

16 Alors Daniel, nommé aussi Beltshatsar, demeura un moment interloqué : ses pensées l’effrayaient. Le roi reprit et dit : Beltshatsar, que le songe et son explication ne t’effraient pas !
– Mon Seigneur, répondit Beltshatsar, je souhaiterais que ce songe s’applique à tes ennemis, et sa signification à tes adversaires !
17 Tu as vu un arbre grandir et devenir vigoureux, sa cime touchait le ciel et on le voyait de toute la terre. 18 Cet arbre au feuillage magnifique et aux fruits abondants portait de la nourriture pour tous les êtres vivants. Les animaux sauvages venaient s’abriter sous lui et les oiseaux nichaient dans ses branches. 19 Cet arbre, ô roi, c’est toi ! Car tu es devenu grand et puissant. Ta grandeur s’est accrue, elle atteint jusqu’au ciel et ta domination s’étend jusqu’aux confins de la terre. 20 Le roi a vu ensuite l’un de ceux qui veillent, un saint, descendre du ciel et crier : « Abattez l’arbre et détruisez-le ! Laissez toutefois en terre la souche avec les racines, mais liées de chaînes de fer et de bronze au milieu de l’herbe des champs, qu’il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel, et qu’il se nourrisse d’herbe avec les animaux des champs jusqu’à ce que sept temps aient passé. »
21 Voici ce que cela signifie, ô roi ! Il s’agit là d’un décret du Très-Haut prononcé contre mon seigneur le roi.
22 On te chassera du milieu des humains et tu vivras parmi les bêtes des champs. On te nourrira d’herbe comme les bœufs et tu seras trempé de la rosée du ciel. Tu seras dans cet état durant sept temps, jusqu’à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut est le maître de toute royauté humaine et qu’il accorde la royauté à qui il lui plaît. 23 Mais si l’on a ordonné de préserver la souche avec les racines de l’arbre, c’est que la royauté te sera rendue dès que tu auras reconnu que le Dieu des cieux est souverain. 24 C’est pourquoi, ô roi, voici mon conseil : puisses-tu juger bon de le suivre ! Détourne-toi de tes péchés et fais ce qui est juste ! Mets un terme à tes injustices en ayant compassion des pauvres ! Peut-être ta tranquillité se prolongera-t-elle.
Le rêve se réalise
25 Tous ces événements s’accomplirent pour le roi Nabuchodonosor. 26 En effet, douze mois plus tard, il se promenait sur la terrasse du palais royal de Babylone.
27 Il prit la parole et dit : N’est-ce pas là Babylone la grande que moi j’ai bâtie pour en faire une résidence royale ? C’est par la grandeur de ma puissance et pour la gloire de ma majesté que j’ai fait cela.
28 Ces paroles étaient encore sur ses lèvres, qu’une voix retentit du ciel : Roi Nabuchodonosor, écoute ce qu’on te dit : le pouvoir royal t’est retiré ! 29 On te chassera du milieu des humains et tu vivras avec les bêtes des champs, on te nourrira d’herbe comme les bœufs. Tu seras dans cet état durant sept temps, jusqu’à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut est maître de toute royauté humaine et qu’il accorde la royauté à qui il lui plaît.
30 Au même instant, la sentence prononcée contre Nabuchodonosor fut exécutée : il fut chassé du milieu des hommes, il se mit à manger de l’herbe comme les bœufs et son corps fut trempé par la rosée du ciel, sa chevelure devint aussi longue que des plumes d’aigle et ses ongles ressemblaient aux griffes des oiseaux.
31 Au terme du temps annoncé, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je levai les yeux vers le ciel, et la raison me revint. Je remerciai le Très-Haut, je louai celui qui vit éternellement, et je proclamai sa gloire :
sa souveraineté ╵est éternelle
son règne dure d’âge en âge.
32 Tous les habitants de la terre ╵ne comptent pour rien devant lui,
et il agit comme il l’entend
envers l’armée des êtres ╵qui vivent dans le ciel ╵et envers les habitants de la terre.
Personne ne peut s’opposer ╵à ses interventions
ou lui reprocher : « Que fais-tu ? »
33 A l’heure même, la raison me revint, la gloire de ma royauté, la majesté et la splendeur me furent rendues : mes conseillers et mes dignitaires me rappelèrent et je fus réinstallé sur mon trône avec un surcroît de grandeur. 34 Maintenant, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je loue, j’exalte et je glorifie le Roi des cieux, car il agit en accord avec ses paroles[d] et tout ce qu’il fait est juste, il a le pouvoir d’abaisser ceux qui vivent dans l’orgueil.

4 Ich, Nebukadnezar, lebte glücklich und zufrieden im königlichen Palast. 2 Doch eines Tages, als ich auf meinem Bett lag und schlief, hatte ich einen schrecklichen Traum. Was ich darin sah, jagte mir große Angst ein. 3 Da ließ ich alle weisen Berater rufen. Sie sollten mir diesen Traum deuten. 4 Als die Wahrsager, Geisterbeschwörer, Sterndeuter und Magier vor mir standen, schilderte ich ihnen meinen Traum. Doch keiner konnte mir erklären, welche Botschaft er enthielt.
5 Zuletzt trat Daniel vor mich, der nach meinem Gott Bel[a] den Namen Beltschazar bekommen hatte. In ihm wohnt der Geist der heiligen Götter. Auch ihm erzählte ich meinen Traum: 6 »Beltschazar«, sagte ich, »dich habe ich über alle Wahrsager gesetzt, weil ich weiß, dass der Geist der heiligen Götter in dir wohnt. Es gibt kein Geheimnis, das du nicht aufdecken kannst. Sag mir doch, was die Bilder bedeuten, die ich im Traum gesehen habe!
7 Ich träumte, in der Mitte der Erde stehe ein Baum von gewaltiger Höhe. 8 Er wuchs und wurde immer größer, bis sein Wipfel den Himmel berührte. Noch vom äußersten Ende der Erde aus konnte man ihn sehen. 9 Er besaß prächtige Blätter und trug viele Früchte. Den wilden Tieren bot er Schatten und Schutz, in seinen Zweigen nisteten die Vögel. Alle Menschen und Tiere ernährten sich von seinen Früchten.
10 Während ich den Baum betrachtete, kam plötzlich vom Himmel ein Engel Gottes[b] herab. 11 Er rief laut: ›Fällt den Baum und hackt seine Äste ab! Reißt die Blätter herunter und verstreut die Früchte überall! Die Tiere, die in seinem Schatten leben, und die Vögel, die in seinen Zweigen nisten, jagt in die Flucht! 12 Den Wurzelstock aber lasst stehen und bindet ihn mit Ketten aus Eisen und Bronze auf der Wiese fest. Der Mensch, den dieser Wurzelstock darstellt, soll[c] vom Tau durchnässt werden und sich wie ein Tier von Gras ernähren. 13 Er wird seinen menschlichen Verstand verlieren und einem Tier gleichen. Sieben Zeiträume[d] lang soll dies dauern! 14 So wurde es im Rat der heiligen Engel[e] beschlossen, damit die Menschen erkennen: Der höchste Gott ist Herr über alle Königreiche der Welt. Er vertraut die Herrschaft an, wem er will, selbst dem unbedeutendsten Menschen kann er sie geben.‹
15 Das alles habe ich geträumt. Und nun erkläre mir, was es bedeutet, Beltschazar! Alle meine Berater sind unfähig dazu. Doch du kannst es, weil der Geist der heiligen Götter in dir wohnt.«
16 Daniel, den man Beltschazar nannte, war eine Zeit lang starr vor Schreck, so erschütterte ihn das Gehörte. Da sagte ich zu ihm: »Beltschazar, mein Traum und seine Deutung brauchen dir keine Angst einzujagen!« Daniel erwiderte: »Mein Herr und König, ich wünschte, die Botschaft würde deinen Feinden gelten, allen, die dich hassen! 17 Du hast einen Baum gesehen, der immer größer wurde, bis sein Wipfel schließlich den Himmel berührte. Noch vom äußersten Ende der Erde aus konnte man ihn erkennen. 18 Er besaß prächtige Blätter und trug viele Früchte. Den wilden Tieren bot er Schatten, in seinen Zweigen nisteten die Vögel. 19 Dieser Baum bist du, mein König! Mächtig und bedeutend bist du geworden! Deine Größe reicht bis zum Himmel, und deine Herrschaft erstreckt sich bis zum Ende der Erde. 20 Dann hast du gesehen, wie ein Engel Gottes vom Himmel herabkam und rief: ›Fällt den Baum und haut ihn in Stücke; den Wurzelstock aber lasst stehen und bindet ihn mit Ketten aus Eisen und Bronze auf der Wiese fest! Der Mensch, den dieser Wurzelstock darstellt, soll vom Tau durchnässt und den Tieren gleich werden! Sieben Zeiträume lang wird dies dauern.‹
21 Höre, mein König, was der höchste Gott über dich beschlossen hat: 22 Man wird dich aus der menschlichen Gemeinschaft ausstoßen, und du musst unter den Tieren hausen. Du wirst Gras fressen wie ein Rind und nass werden vom Tau. Erst wenn sieben Zeiträume vergangen sind, wirst du erkennen: Der höchste Gott ist Herr über alle Königreiche der Welt. Er vertraut die Herrschaft an, wem er will. 23 Du hast gehört, wie der Engel befahl, den Wurzelstock stehen zu lassen. Dies bedeutet: Du darfst wieder als König regieren, wenn du Gott als Herrn anerkennst. 24 Nimm meinen Rat an, o König! Sag dich von allem Unrecht los und tu Gutes! Mach deine Verfehlungen wieder gut, indem du den Armen hilfst! Dann wird es dir vielleicht auch in Zukunft gut gehen.«
25 Alles traf so ein, wie Daniel es vorausgesagt hatte: 26 Ein Jahr später ging ich auf dem Dach meines Palasts auf und ab. 27 Dabei dachte ich: »Da zu meinen Füßen liegt Babylon, die herrliche Stadt! Mir zu Ehren zeigt sie ihre ganze Pracht. Ich habe sie zu meiner Residenz ausgebaut, denn ich bin ein großer und mächtiger König!«
28 Noch während ich dies dachte, hörte ich eine Stimme vom Himmel: »König Nebukadnezar, lass dir sagen: Deine Herrschaft ist zu Ende! 29 Die Menschen werden dich verstoßen, unter wilden Tieren musst du hausen und Gras fressen wie ein Rind. Erst wenn sieben Zeiträume vergangen sind, wirst du erkennen: Der höchste Gott ist Herr über alle Königreiche der Welt, er vertraut die Herrschaft an, wem er will.«
30 Sofort erfüllte sich diese Ankündigung: Ich wurde aus der menschlichen Gemeinschaft verstoßen und fraß Gras wie ein Rind. Ich wurde vom Tau durchnässt, mein Haar war bald so lang wie Adlerfedern und meine Nägel wie Vogelkrallen.
31 Als die lange Zeit schließlich zu Ende ging, schaute ich hilfesuchend zum Himmel empor, und da erlangte ich meinen Verstand wieder. Ich pries den höchsten Gott, ich lobte den, der ewig lebt.
Seine Herrschaft hört niemals auf,
sein Reich bleibt für alle Zeiten bestehen.
32 Die Bewohner dieser Erde sind nichts im Vergleich zu ihm.
Alle Menschen, ja sogar die Mächte des Himmels
müssen sich seinem Willen beugen!
Niemand kann sich ihm widersetzen und ihn fragen: »Was tust du da?«
33 Als ich wieder bei Verstand war, erhielt ich meine königliche Würde, Ehre und Anerkennung zurück. Meine obersten Beamten und die führenden Männer meines Reiches kamen zu mir und setzten mich wieder als König ein. Ich wurde noch berühmter und angesehener als zuvor.
34 Nun lobe und preise ich, Nebukadnezar, den König, der im Himmel regiert. Ihm gebe ich die Ehre! Er ist zuverlässig und gerecht in allem, was er tut. Wer aber stolz und überheblich ist, den kann er stürzen.

1 [b]I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living in contentment at home and enjoying the luxury of my palaces. 2 However, as I lay in my bed, I had a dream that frightened me, and the visions that I experienced in my mind were a source of torment.
3 Therefore, I issued a decree that all the wise men of Babylon were to be brought before me and offer me their interpretation of the dream. 4 When the magicians, the soothsayers, the Chaldeans, and the diviners arrived, I related to them the content of the dream, but they were unable to explain its meaning.
5 Finally Daniel, whom I had renamed Belteshazzar, after the name of my god and in whom resides the Spirit of the holy God, came into my presence, and I related to him my dream. 6 “O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the Spirit of the holy God resides in you and that no mystery is too difficult for you to resolve. Listen to the dream that I experienced, and tell me its interpretation.
7 “These were the visions that came to me as I lay in my bed:
“I beheld a tree at the center of the earth,
and its height was great.
8 The tree became ever taller and stronger
until its top reached the heavens,
and it was visible to the ends of the earth.
9 Its foliage was beautiful,
and its fruit was abundant,
providing fruit for all.
The wild beasts found shade under it,
the birds of the air rested in its branches,
and from it all living creatures were nourished.
10 “In the vision I saw as I lay in my bed, I next beheld a holy sentinel coming down from heaven. 11 He shouted loudly:
“ ‘Hew down the tree and lop off its branches;
strip off its foliage and scatter its fruit.
12 However, leave the stump and its roots in the ground,
bound with iron and bronze
in the grass of the field.
Let him be bathed by the dew of heaven,
and let his lot be to eat, among wild beasts,
the grass of the earth.
13 Let his mind be changed from that of a human,
and let the mind of a beast be given to him,
until seven years pass over him.
14 ‘Such is the sentence decreed by the sentinel,
the verdict announced by the holy ones,
so that all who live may learn
that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mortals.
He confers it on whomever he wishes
and appoints over it the lowliest of men.’
15 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now I am depending upon you, Belteshazzar, to interpret its meaning, although none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret its meaning, you can do so because the Spirit of the holy God resides in you.”
16 Daniel Interprets the Dream.[c] Then Daniel, who was called Belteshazzar, was greatly upset and confused. The king said, “Belteshazzar, do not allow the dream and its meaning to terrify you.” Belteshazzar replied, “My lord, may the dream be meant for those who hurt you, and its interpretation for your enemies. 17 The tree that you saw, which grew great and strong, with its top reaching the sky so that it could be seen throughout the entire earth, 18 a tree with beautiful foliage and abundant fruit, providing food for all and affording shade for the wild beasts, with the birds of heaven dwelling in its branches— 19 that tree is you, O king. You have grown great and strong. Your power has increased and now reaches the sky; your sovereignty extends to the ends of the earth.
20 “In regard to the king’s vision of a holy sentinel descending from heaven and saying: ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump and its roots in the ground, bound with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field; let him be bathed by the dew of heaven, and let his lot be with the wild beasts until seven years pass over him,’ 21 this is the interpretation, O king. It is a decree that the Most High has issued upon my lord the king:
22 “You will be banished from human society,
and you will dwell among the wild animals.
You will be forced to eat grass like oxen,
and you will be drenched with the dew of heaven.
Seven years will pass over you
until you have learned
that the Most High rules over the kingdom of men
and gives it to whomever he wishes.
23 “As for the command to leave untouched the stump and the roots of the tree, this means that your kingdom will once again be subject to your rule once you come to acknowledge the sovereignty of Heaven.[d] 24 May the king be willing to take my advice. Atone for your sins with deeds of righteousness, and for your iniquities with mercy to the oppressed. If you do so, you will enjoy a long and peaceful life.”[e]
25 The Dream Is Fulfilled. All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 26 At the end of twelve months, as he was walking on the roof of the royal palace, 27 the king said, “How magnificent Babylon is! Was it not built as a royal residence by my mighty strength and for my majestic glory?”[f]
28 These words were not completely out of his mouth when a voice came from heaven:
“To you, King Nebuchadnezzar, it is decreed:
your kingdom has been taken from you.
29 You shall be banished from human society
as you are forced to dwell with wild beasts
and feed on grass as the oxen do.
Seven years shall pass over you
until you have learned
that the Most High rules over the kingdom of men
and gives it to whomever he wishes.”
30 This sentence was immediately fulfilled. Nebuchadnezzar was cast out from human society, and he ate grass as oxen do. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails became like a bird’s talons.
31 When the period was over, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes to heaven and my power of reasoning was restored to me.
I blessed the Most High,
and I praised and glorified him
who lives forever.
32 All who dwell on earth count for nothing;
he does as he pleases with the powers of heaven[g]
and the inhabitants on earth.
No one can stay his hand
or say to him, “What are you doing?”
33 At that very moment my power of reason returned to me, and my glory and splendor were restored to me. My counselors and my lords sought my counsel. I was reestablished in my kingdom, and my power was greatly increased.
34 Therefore, now I, Nebuchadnezzar,
praise and exalt and glorify
the King of heaven.
For all of his works are right,
and all of his ways are just.
Also, he is able to humble
all those who follow the path of pride.

- Daniel 4:1 There do exist, in fact, some documents about a king who withdrew for some years to an oasis and who consulted a Jewish seer. This would be Nabonidus, who reigned a half-century after Nebuchadnezzar (556–539 B.C.). Everyone knows of the immense pride of Nebuchadnezzar, who turned his city into one of the wonders of the world. In our story, the author has drawn on recollections and information that were not accurate, while reserving the right to attribute everything to the person with whom he is concerned, Nebuchadnezzar.
- Daniel 4:1 The king is tormented by the way in which a tree, the symbol par excellence of life and immortality (see Gen 3:9), is treated in his dream. In the Bible, a tree serves also to describe the destiny of a person, of a sovereign (Pss 1:3; 37:35; Ezek 31). By reserving to Daniel the responsibility for interpreting the king’s nightmare, the author shows the superiority of Jewish wisdom in explaining the difficult mysteries of human existence.
- Daniel 4:16 This is a kind of prophecy that announces the lot reserved for Nebuchadnezzar: this most prestigious and most acclaimed of kings will undergo a trial before being converted unless he changes his present ways.
- Daniel 4:23 God is called Heaven in order not to profane God’s name by uttering it; to him alone, dominion belongs.
- Daniel 4:24 A classic locus for the doctrine of the efficacy of good works.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Tree
4 [a]King Nebuchadnezzar,
To the nations and peoples of every language,(A) who live in all the earth:
May you prosper greatly!(B)
2 It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs(C) and wonders that the Most High God(D) has performed for me.
3 How great are his signs,
how mighty his wonders!(E)
His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;
his dominion endures(F) from generation to generation.
4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented(G) and prosperous. 5 I had a dream(H) that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed,(I) the images and visions that passed through my mind(J) terrified me.(K) 6 So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret(L) the dream for me. 7 When the magicians,(M) enchanters, astrologers[b] and diviners(N) came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.(O) 8 Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar,(P) after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods(Q) is in him.)
9 I said, “Belteshazzar, chief(R) of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods(S) is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. 10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed:(T) I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous.(U) 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth.(V) 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. 18 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me.(AF) But you can,(AG) because the spirit of the holy gods(AH) is in you.”(AI)
Daniel Interprets the Dream
19 Then Daniel (also called Belteshazzar) was greatly perplexed for a time, and his thoughts terrified(AJ) him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its meaning alarm you.”(AK)
Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, if only the dream applied to your enemies and its meaning to your adversaries! 20 The tree you saw, which grew large and strong, with its top touching the sky, visible to the whole earth, 21 with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit, providing food for all, giving shelter to the wild animals, and having nesting places in its branches for the birds(AL)— 22 Your Majesty, you are that tree!(AM) You have become great and strong; your greatness has grown until it reaches the sky, and your dominion extends to distant parts of the earth.(AN)
23 “Your Majesty saw a holy one,(AO) a messenger, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump, bound with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field, while its roots remain in the ground. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven; let him live with the wild animals, until seven times pass by for him.’(AP)
24 “This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree(AQ) the Most High has issued against my lord the king: 25 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched(AR) with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High(AS) is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.(AT) 26 The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots(AU) means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.(AV) 27 Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed.(AW) It may be that then your prosperity(AX) will continue.(AY)”
The Dream Is Fulfilled
28 All this happened(AZ) to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory(BA) of my majesty?”(BB)
31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you.(BC) 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”(BD)
33 Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched(BE) with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.(BF)
34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity(BG) was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.(BH)
His dominion is an eternal dominion;
his kingdom(BI) endures from generation to generation.(BJ)
35 All the peoples of the earth
are regarded as nothing.(BK)
He does as he pleases(BL)
with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back(BM) his hand(BN)
or say to him: “What have you done?”(BO)
36 At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom.(BP) My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt(BQ) and glorify(BR) the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just.(BS) And those who walk in pride(BT) he is able to humble.(BU)
