世事難測宜忠心勤勞
11 要把你的糧食撒在水面上，因為日久你必得回。 2 你要分為七份，或分為八份，因為你不知道將來會有甚麼災禍在地上發生。 3 雲若充滿水氣，雨就傾倒在地上；樹無論向南倒，或向北倒，倒在哪裡，就橫在哪裡。 4 看風的，不撒種；觀雲的，不收割。 5 你不曉得風的路向，不知道骨頭如何在孕婦胎中形成，照樣，創造萬物之 神的作為，你也不得而知。 6 早晨要撒你的種，直到黃昏也不要歇手；因為你不知道哪一樣種得成，是早撒的，或晚撒的，或兩者都一樣好。

7 光是美好的，眼睛得見天日，也是好的。 8 人無論多長壽，都當樂在其中，不過他要想到黑暗的日子，因為這些日子將會很多；要來的，都是虛空的。

Façamos o que é bom no tempo oportuno
11 Lança o teu pão sobre as águas, porque, depois de muitos dias, o acharás. 2 Reparte com sete e ainda até com oito, porque não sabes que mal haverá sobre a terra. 3 Estando as nuvens cheias, derramam a chuva sobre a terra, e, caindo a árvore para o sul ou para o norte, no lugar em que a árvore cair, ali ficará. 4 Quem observa o vento nunca semeará, e o que olha para as nuvens nunca segará. 5 Assim como tu não sabes qual o caminho do vento, nem como se formam os ossos no ventre da que está grávida, assim também não sabes as obras de Deus, que faz todas as coisas. 6 Pela manhã, semeia a tua semente e, à tarde, não retires a tua mão, porque tu não sabes qual prosperará; se esta, se aquela ou se ambas igualmente serão boas. 7 Verdadeiramente suave é a luz, e agradável é aos olhos ver o sol. 8 Mas, se o homem viver muitos anos e em todos eles se alegrar, também se deve lembrar dos dias das trevas, porque hão de ser muitos. Tudo quanto sucede é vaidade.
9 Alegra-te, jovem, na tua mocidade, e alegre-se o teu coração nos dias da tua mocidade, e anda pelos caminhos do teu coração e pela vista dos teus olhos; sabe, porém, que por todas essas coisas te trará Deus a juízo. 10 Afasta, pois, a ira do teu coração e remove da tua carne o mal, porque a adolescência e a juventude são vaidade.

The Splendid Adventure of Life[a]
1 Cast your bread upon the waters,[b]
and eventually you will get it back.
2 Share with seven or with eight,[c]
for you never can predict what disasters will come.
3 When clouds are full of rain,
they will pour it out upon the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
wherever it falls, there will it lie.
4 One who continues to watch the wind will never sow,
and one who keeps staring at the clouds will never reap.
5 Just as you do not know the path of the wind
or how the body is formed in a woman’s womb,
so you do not know the work of God,
the Creator of all.
6 In the morning sow your seed,[d]
and do not cease your labor until evening.
For you do not know which of the sowings will succeed
or whether all alike will turn out well.

7 Light is sweet,
and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun.
8 No matter how many years you may live,
you should enjoy all of them,
for remember that the days of darkness will be many.
Everything that is to come is vanity.
Rejoice in Your Youth
9 Rejoice, young man, while you are young,
and make the most of the days of your youth.
Follow the inclinations of your heart
and the desires of your eyes.
Yet remember that for all these things
God will demand an account.[f]
10 Banish grief from your heart
and ignore the sufferings of your body,
for youth and the prime of life are fleeting.

- Ecclesiastes 11:1 Qoheleth calls upon us to take risks. This alone depends on us, while everything else remains in the mystery of God. Qoheleth has called upon us to trust in God without having recourse to pathetic discourses and taught us the true hope, one based on the proof of facts.
- Ecclesiastes 11:1 Cast your bread upon the waters: a summons to be adventurous like those who braved the rigors of seagoing trade and achieved wealth (see Prov 11:24).
- Ecclesiastes 11:2 Share with seven or with eight: this may refer to sharing our resources with others or to avoiding putting all our eggs in one basket.
- Ecclesiastes 11:6 Clouds . . . tree . . . wind . . . seed: we must keep in mind that nothing is ever really certain to occur in life. Our task is to make an educated guess about future projects and act on them as best we can.
- Ecclesiastes 11:7 This section is one of the most beautiful poetic compositions of the Bible. It sings of the sun and the joy of youth with a touch of melancholy. This is followed by a moving portrait of old age that is very fair and very true (Eccl 12:3-5).
The writer speaks of an eternal home, although this means a survival of which he knows nothing. As the dust returns to the earth, the breath, i.e., the life, returns to God who, as it were, stores it up. Our author, who sees the world as an eternal return of all things (see ch. 1), can also speak of a return to God. - Ecclesiastes 11:9 God will demand an account: hence, every detail of life is in no way meaningless or vanity but of great importance.

Invest in Many Ventures
11 Ship(A) your grain across the sea;
after many days you may receive a return.(B)
2 Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight;
you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.
3 If clouds are full of water,
they pour rain on the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant;
whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.
5 As you do not know the path of the wind,(C)
or how the body is formed[a] in a mother’s womb,(D)
so you cannot understand the work of God,
the Maker of all things.
6 Sow your seed in the morning,
and at evening let your hands not be idle,(E)
for you do not know which will succeed,
whether this or that,
or whether both will do equally well.
Remember Your Creator While Young
7 Light is sweet,
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.(F)
8 However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember(G) the days of darkness,
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.
9 You who are young, be happy while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.(H)
10 So then, banish anxiety(I) from your heart
and cast off the troubles of your body,
for youth and vigor are meaningless.(J)
