Herren är trofast
14 Men Herren ska förbarma sig över israeliterna, för de är fortfarande hans utvalda. Han ska föra dem tillbaka hem, så att de än en gång kan bosätta sig i Israels land. Många nationer ska komma och förena sig med dem där och bli deras trogna vänner.
2 Världens nationer ska hjälpa dem att återvända. De som kommer för att bo i landet ska bli deras tjänare. De som gjorde Israels folk till slavar ska själva bli slavar. Israel kommer att regera över sina fiender!
3 Den underbara dag när Herren ger sitt folk vila från sorg och fruktan, från slaveri och bojor,
4 ska du håna kungen i Babylon och säga: Du, din förtryckare! Äntligen har du fått vad du förtjänar!
5 Herren har krossat ditt ogudaktiga välde och gjort slut på din onda regim.
6 Du förföljde mitt folk. I ditt raseri gav du det slag efter slag, och du höll folken i ditt skoningslösa grepp. Du var våldsam i din tyranni.
7 Men nu har äntligen hela jorden kommit till ro och är stilla! Hela världen sjunger!
8 Till och med skogens träd, cypresser och Libanons cedrar, sjunger och jublar: Din makt är krossad. Ingen kan längre störa oss. Äntligen har vi fått fred.
9 Dödsrikets invånare trängs för att möta dig när du kommer till dem. Världshärskare och jordens mäktigaste kungar, som varit döda länge, reser sig från sina platser för att få träffa dig.
10 Med en mun ropar de: Nu är du lika svag som vi!
11 Din makt och styrka är borta. Den har begravts med dig. All skön musik i ditt palats har tystnat. Din bädd är förruttnelse och ditt täcke är maskar!
12 Vilket fall från himlen är inte detta, du morgonstjärna och son av gryningen! Du som en gång kuvade nationer har blivit störtad från din tron.
13 Du sa för dig själv: Jag ska stiga upp till himlen och regera över änglarna. Jag ska bestiga den högsta tronen och regera från gudaförsamlingens berg långt uppe i norr.
14 Jag ska bli lik den Högste.
15 Men i stället ska du kastas ner i dödsriket, längst ner i avgrunden.
16 Alla där kommer att stirra på dig och fråga: Kan detta vara den som fick jorden och världens alla kungadömen att darra?
17 Kan detta vara han som förvandlade hela jorden till en öken och lade dess största städer i ruiner och som inte hade någon barmhärtighet med sina fångar?
18 Folkens kungar ligger med ära i sina gravar,
19 men din kropp kastas ut som en avbruten gren. Du ligger i en öppen grav, täckt av de döda som stupat i striden. Du ligger som ett kadaver på vägen och trampas ner av hästarnas hovar.
20 Det kommer inte att resas något monument över dig för du har förstört ditt land och slagit ihjäl ditt folk. Din son ska inte efterträda dig som kung.
21 Slå ihjäl barnen till denne syndare. Låt dem inte resa sig. Låt dem inte inta landet eller bygga upp världens städer på nytt.
22 Jag har själv rest mig mot honom, säger Herren, och jag ska förhindra att hans barn eller barnbarn någonsin kommer att sitta på Babylons tron.
23 Jag ska göra Babylon till en sumpmark och ett tillhåll för nattfåglar. Jag ska sopa landet med ödeläggelsens kvast, säger Herren, härskarornas Gud.
24 Herren har svurit att göra detta! Detta är hans syfte och plan:
25 Jag har beslutat att bryta ner den assyriska armén, när den är i Israel, och krossa den mot mina berg. Mitt folk ska inte längre behöva vara deras slavar.
26 Detta är min plan för hela jorden, och jag ska utföra den genom min väldiga makt, som sträcker sig över hela världen.
27 Herren, härskarornas Gud, har själv talat, och vem kan ändra hans planer? När han räcker ut sin hand för att göra något, vem kan då stoppa honom?
Profetia över filisteerna
28 Detta budskap kom till mig samma år som kung Ahas dog:
29 Gläd er inte, ni filisteer, över att den kung som besegrade er är död. Det är sant att den piska som slog er är sönderbruten, men hans son kommer att bli ett ännu värre gissel för er än han själv någonsin var! Ormen ska föda ännu en orm, en stingande giftorm!
30 De fattigaste bland fattiga ska få vad de behöver. De ska få ro och vila! Men dig och dina ättlingar ska jag utplåna med hungersnöd och krig.
31 Gråt och jämra er, ni filisteernas städer, för ni är dömda. Hela er nation kommer att drabbas. En vältränad armé ska falla över er från norr som ett mörkt moln.
32 Vad ska vi säga till deras sändebud? Jo, tala om för dem att Herren har grundat Jerusalem och att han har beslutat att de fattiga bland hans folk ska få ta sin tillflykt inom dess murar.

Mercy on Jacob
14 For the Lord (A)will have mercy on Jacob, and (B)will still choose Israel, and settle them in their own land. (C)The strangers will be joined with them, and they will cling to the house of Jacob. 2 Then people will take them (D)and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them for servants and maids in the land of the Lord; they will take them captive whose captives they were, (E)and rule over their oppressors.
Fall of the King of Babylon
3 It shall come to pass in the day the Lord gives you rest from your sorrow, and from your fear and the hard bondage in which you were made to serve, 4 that you (F)will take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say:
“How the oppressor has ceased,
The (G)golden[a] city ceased!
5 The Lord has broken (H)the staff of the wicked,
The scepter of the rulers;
6 He who struck the people in wrath with a continual stroke,
He who ruled the nations in anger,
Is persecuted and no one hinders.
7 The whole earth is at rest and quiet;
They break forth into singing.
8 (I)Indeed the cypress trees rejoice over you,
And the cedars of Lebanon,
Saying, ‘Since you [b]were cut down,
No woodsman has come up against us.’
9 “Hell(J)[c] from beneath is excited about you,
To meet you at your coming;
It stirs up the dead for you,
All the chief ones of the earth;
It has raised up from their thrones
All the kings of the nations.
10 They all shall (K)speak and say to you:
‘Have you also become as weak as we?
Have you become like us?
11 Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,
And the sound of your stringed instruments;
The maggot is spread under you,
And worms cover you.’
The Fall of Lucifer
12 “How(L) you are fallen from heaven,
O [d]Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:
(M)‘I will ascend into heaven,
(N)I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the (O)mount of the congregation
(P)On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
(Q)I will be like the Most High.’
15 Yet you (R)shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the [e]lowest depths of the Pit.
16 “Those who see you will gaze at you,
And consider you, saying:
‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
Who shook kingdoms,
17 Who made the world as a wilderness
And destroyed its cities,
Who [f]did not open the house of his prisoners?’
18 “All the kings of the nations,
All of them, sleep in glory,
Everyone in his own house;
19 But you are cast out of your grave
Like an [g]abominable branch,
Like the garment of those who are slain,
[h]Thrust through with a sword,
Who go down to the stones of the pit,
Like a corpse trodden underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
Because you have destroyed your land
And slain your people.
(S)The brood of evildoers shall never be named.
21 Prepare slaughter for his children
(T)Because of the iniquity of their fathers,
Lest they rise up and possess the land,
And fill the face of the world with cities.”
Babylon Destroyed
22 “For I will rise up against them,” says the Lord of hosts,
“And cut off from Babylon (U)the name and (V)remnant,
(W)And offspring and posterity,” says the Lord.
23 “I will also make it a possession for the (X)porcupine,
And marshes of muddy water;
I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” says the Lord of hosts.
Assyria Destroyed
24 The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying,
“Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass,
And as I have purposed, so it shall (Y)stand:
25 That I will break the (Z)Assyrian in My land,
And on My mountains tread him underfoot.
Then (AA)his yoke shall be removed from them,
And his burden removed from their shoulders.
26 This is the (AB)purpose that is purposed against the whole earth,
And this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.
27 For the Lord of hosts has (AC)purposed,
And who will annul it?
His hand is stretched out,
And who will turn it back?”
Philistia Destroyed
28 This is the [i]burden which came in the year that (AD)King Ahaz died.
29 “Do not rejoice, all you of Philistia,
(AE)Because the rod that struck you is broken;
For out of the serpent’s roots will come forth a viper,
(AF)And its offspring will be a fiery flying serpent.
30 The firstborn of the poor will feed,
And the needy will lie down in safety;
I will kill your roots with famine,
And it will slay your remnant.
31 Wail, O gate! Cry, O city!
All you of Philistia are dissolved;
For smoke will come from the north,
And no one will be alone in his [j]appointed times.”
32 What will they answer the messengers of the nation?
That (AG)the Lord has founded Zion,
And (AH)the poor of His people shall take refuge in it.

14 The Lord will have compassion(A) on Jacob;
once again he will choose(B) Israel
and will settle them in their own land.(C)
Foreigners(D) will join them
and unite with the descendants of Jacob.
2 Nations will take them
and bring(E) them to their own place.
And Israel will take possession of the nations(F)
and make them male and female servants in the Lord’s land.
They will make captives(G) of their captors
and rule over their oppressors.(H)
3 On the day the Lord gives you relief(I) from your suffering and turmoil(J) and from the harsh labor forced on you,(K) 4 you will take up this taunt(L) against the king of Babylon:(M)
How the oppressor(N) has come to an end!
How his fury[a] has ended!
5 The Lord has broken the rod(O) of the wicked,(P)
the scepter(Q) of the rulers,
6 which in anger struck down peoples(R)
with unceasing blows,
and in fury subdued(S) nations
with relentless aggression.(T)
7 All the lands are at rest and at peace;(U)
they break into singing.(V)
8 Even the junipers(W) and the cedars of Lebanon
gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
no one comes to cut us down.”(X)
9 The realm of the dead(Y) below is all astir
to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(Z) to greet you—
all those who were leaders(AA) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
all those who were kings over the nations.(AB)
10 They will all respond,
they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
you have become like us.”(AC)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(AD)
along with the noise of your harps;(AE)
maggots are spread out beneath you
and worms(AF) cover you.(AG)
12 How you have fallen(AH) from heaven,
morning star,(AI) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!(AJ)
13 You said in your heart,
“I will ascend(AK) to the heavens;
I will raise my throne(AL)
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,(AM)
on the utmost heights(AN) of Mount Zaphon.[b]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;(AO)
I will make myself like the Most High.”(AP)
15 But you are brought down(AQ) to the realm of the dead,(AR)
to the depths(AS) of the pit.(AT)
16 Those who see you stare at you,
they ponder your fate:(AU)
“Is this the man who shook(AV) the earth
and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(AW)
who overthrew(AX) its cities
and would not let his captives go home?”(AY)
18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
each in his own tomb.(AZ)
19 But you are cast out(BA) of your tomb
like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(BB)
with those pierced by the sword,(BC)
those who descend to the stones of the pit.(BD)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20 you will not join them in burial,(BE)
for you have destroyed your land
and killed your people.
Let the offspring(BF) of the wicked(BG)
never be mentioned(BH) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(BI)
for the sins of their ancestors;(BJ)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
and cover the earth with their cities.
22 “I will rise up(BK) against them,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(BL) and survivors,
her offspring and descendants,(BM)”
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(BN)
and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(BO)”
declares the Lord Almighty.(BP)
24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(BQ)
“Surely, as I have planned,(BR) so it will be,
and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(BS)
25 I will crush the Assyrian(BT) in my land;
on my mountains I will trample him down.
His yoke(BU) will be taken from my people,
and his burden removed from their shoulders.(BV)”
26 This is the plan(BW) determined for the whole world;
this is the hand(BX) stretched out over all nations.
27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed,(BY) and who can thwart him?
His hand(BZ) is stretched out, and who can turn it back?(CA)
A Prophecy Against the Philistines
28 This prophecy(CB) came in the year(CC) King Ahaz(CD) died:
29 Do not rejoice, all you Philistines,(CE)
that the rod that struck you is broken;
from the root of that snake will spring up a viper,(CF)
its fruit will be a darting, venomous serpent.(CG)
30 The poorest of the poor will find pasture,
and the needy(CH) will lie down in safety.(CI)
But your root I will destroy by famine;(CJ)
it will slay(CK) your survivors.(CL)
31 Wail,(CM) you gate!(CN) Howl, you city!
Melt away, all you Philistines!(CO)
A cloud of smoke comes from the north,(CP)
and there is not a straggler in its ranks.(CQ)
32 What answer shall be given
to the envoys(CR) of that nation?
“The Lord has established Zion,(CS)
and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.(CT)”
