3 1-2 とっぷり日も暮れたある夜のこと、パリサイ人で、ニコデモという名のユダヤ人の指導者がイエスに会いに来ました。「先生。だれも、あなたが神から遣わされた教師であることを知っております。あなたのなさる奇跡を見ればわかることです。」 3 「そうですか。でもよく言っておきますが、あなたはもう一度生まれ直さなければ、絶対に神の国に入れません。」 4 ニコデモは、思わず言いました。「ええっ、もう一度生まれるのですか。いったい、どういうことですか。年をとった人間が母親の胎内に戻って、もう一度生まれることなどできるわけがありません。」 5 「よく言っておきますが、だれでも水と御霊によって生まれなければ、神の国には入れません。 6 人間からは人間のいのちが生まれるだけです。けれども御霊は、天からの、全く新しいいのちを下さるのです。 7 もう一度生まれなければならないといって、驚くことはありません。 8 風は音が聞こえるだけで、どこから吹いて来て、どこへ行くのかわかりません。御霊も同じことです。次はだれにこの天からのいのちが与えられるか、わからないのです。」 9 「それはいったい、どういうことですか？」 10 「あなたはみなに尊敬されているユダヤ人の教師ではありませんか。このようなこともわからないのですか。 11 わたしは知っていること、見たことだけを話しているのです。それなのに、あなたがたは信じてくれません。 12 わたしが話しているのは、人間の世界で現に起こっていることなのです。それも信じられないくらいなら、天で起こることなど話したところで、とても信じられないでしょう。 13 メシヤのわたしだけが、この地上に下って来て、また天に帰るのです。 14 モーセが荒野で、青銅で作った蛇をさおの先に掲げたように（民数21・9）、わたしも木の上に上げられなければなりません。 15 わたしを信じる人がみな、永遠のいのちを持つためです。」
16 実に神は、ひとり子をさえ惜しまず与えるほどに、この世界を愛してくださいました。それは、神の御子を信じる者が、だれ一人滅びず、永遠のいのちを得るためです。 17 神がご自分の御子を世にお遣わしになったのは、世をさばくためではなく、世を救うためです。 18 この神の子を信じる者は、永遠の滅びを免れます。しかし信じない者は、神のひとり子を信じなかったので、すでにさばかれているのです。 19 そのさばきに会ったのは、天からの光が世に来ているのに、行いが悪く、光よりも闇を愛したからです。 20 彼らは天からの光をきらい、罪が暴露されるのを恐れて、光のほうに来ようとしません。 21 しかし正しいことを行っている人は、喜んで光のほうに来ます。神の望まれることを行っていることが、はっきりわかるためです。
22 その後、イエスと弟子たちはエルサレムを去り、しばらくユダヤに滞在し、バプテスマ（洗礼）を授けていました。
バプテスマのヨハネとイエスの役割
23-24 そのころまだ、バプテスマのヨハネは投獄されておらず、サリムに近いアイノンでバプテスマを授けていました。そこは水が豊富にあったからです。
25 ある日、ヨハネの弟子たちと一人のユダヤ人の間で、ヨハネのバプテスマとイエスのバプテスマのどちらがすぐれているかで議論になりました。 26 弟子たちは、ヨハネのところに来てぐちをこぼしました。「先生。ヨルダン川の向こう岸でお会いした、あなたがメシヤだとおっしゃったあの方も、バプテスマを授けておられるそうです。みんなこちらには来ないで、どんどんあの方のほうへ行ってしまいます。」 27 ヨハネは答えました。「天の神様が、一人一人にそれぞれの役割を決めてくださいます。 28 私の役目は、だれもがあの方のところへ行けるように道を備えることです。私はキリストではないと、はっきり言ったはずです。あの方のために道を備えるために、私はここにいるのです。 29 一番魅力を感じるものに人々が集まるのは当然で、花嫁は花婿のもとへ行き、花婿の友達は花婿といっしょに喜びます。私は花婿の友達だから、花婿の喜ぶ声を聞くと、うれしくてたまらないのです。 30 あの方はますます偉大になり、私はますます力を失います。
31 あの方は天から来られた方で、ほかのだれよりも偉大なお方です。地から出た者は、地上のことしかわかりません。 32 あの方は、見たこと聞いたことをあかしされますが、それを信じる人はなんと少ないことでしょう。 33 そのあかしを信じれば、神が真理の源であることがわかります。 34 神から遣わされたあの方は、神のことばをお話しになります。神の御霊が無限に注がれているからです。 35 父なる神はこの方を愛し、万物をこの方にお与えになりました。 36 この方は神の御子なのです。この方に救っていただけると信じる者はだれでも、永遠のいのちを得ます。しかし、この方に従わない者は、天国を見ることができないばかりか、神の怒りがその人の上にとどまるのです。」

Jesus and Nicodemus
3 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless a man is born again,[a] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can this be?”
10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, but you do not know these things? 11 Truly, truly I say to you, We speak of what We know and bear witness of what We have seen, but you do not receive Our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven except He who descended from heaven, even the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but may have eternal life.
16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 He who believes in Him is not condemned. But he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 This is the verdict, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that it may be revealed that his deeds have been done in God.”
Jesus and John the Baptist
22 After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea. He remained with them there and baptized. 23 John also was baptizing in Aenon toward Salim, because much water was there. And people came and were baptized. 24 For John had not yet been put in prison. 25 Then a dispute arose between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about ceremonial cleansing. 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, look, He is baptizing, and everyone is going to Him.”
27 John answered, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear witness of me, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but ‘I have been sent before Him.’ 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
He Who Comes From Heaven
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness of what He has seen and heard, yet no one receives His testimony. 33 He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. 34 For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without measure to Him. 35 The Father loves the Son, and has placed all things into His hand. 36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life. He who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

25 Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, (AA)to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all (AB)are coming to Him!”
