தன் சொந்த ஊரில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 13:53-58; லூக்கா 4:16-30)
6 அவ்விடத்தைவிட்டு இயேசு தன் சொந்த ஊருக்குக் கிளம்பினார். அவரது சீஷர்கள் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து சென்றனர். 2 ஓய்வு நாளானபோது ஜெப ஆலயத்தில் இயேசு உபதேசம் செய்ய ஆரம்பித்தார். நிறைய மக்கள் அதனைக் கேட்டு வியப்புற்றனர். அவர்கள் “இந்த மனிதர் இந்த உபதேசங்களை எங்கே இருந்து பெற்றார்? இந்த அறிவை எப்படிப் பெற்றார்? இவருக்கு இதனை யார் கொடுத்தது? அற்புதங்களைச் செய்யும் அதிகாரத்தை எங்கிருந்து பெற்றார்? 3 இவர் ஒரு தச்சன் மட்டும்தானே. இவருடைய தாய் மரியாள் அல்லவா! இவர் யாக்கோபு, யோசே, சீமோன் ஆகியோரின் சகோதரர் அல்லவா. இவரது சகோதரிகள் நம்முடன் தானே இருக்கிறார்கள்” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். அவர்கள் இயேசுவை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாமல் இருந்தனர்.
4 இயேசு மக்களைப் பார்த்து, “ஒரு தீர்க்கதரிசியை மற்ற மக்களே மரியாதை செய்வர். ஆனால் அவர் சொந்த ஊரில் சொந்த மக்களிடம் சொந்த வீட்டில் மரியாதை பெறுவதில்லை” என்றார். 5 இயேசு அந்த ஊரில் அதிக அளவில் அற்புதங்களைச் செய்ய இயலவில்லை. அவர் நோயுற்ற சிலரின் மேல் தன் கையை வைத்து குணமாக்கும் சில செயல்களை மட்டுமே செய்தார். 6 அங்குள்ள மக்களுக்கு விசுவாசம் இல்லாதது பற்றி இயேசு மிகவும் ஆச்சரியப்பட்டார். பிறகு இயேசு அந்தப் பகுதியில் உள்ள மற்ற கிராமங்களுக்கும் போய் உபதேசம் செய்தார்.
சீஷர்கள் அனுப்பப்படுதல்
(மத்தேயு 10:1,5-15; லூக்கா 9:1-6)
7 அவர் தனது பன்னிரண்டு சீஷர்களையும் ஒன்றாக அழைத்தார். அவர்களை இரண்டிரண்டு பேராக வெளியே அனுப்பினார். அசுத்த ஆவிகளின் மேல் அவர்களுக்கு அதிகாரத்தைக் கொடுத்தார். 8 அவர் தன் சீஷர்களிடம், “உங்கள் பயணத்துக்கு எதுவும் எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டாம். நடந்து செல்ல வசதியாக ஒரு கைத்தடியை மட்டும் எடுத்துச் செல்லுங்கள். உணவையோ, பையையோ, கச்சைகளில் பணத்தையோ எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டாம். 9 செருப்பை அணிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். ஆடை மட்டும் அணிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். 10 நீங்கள் ஒரு வீட்டுக்குள் நுழைந்ததும், அந்த ஊரை விட்டு நீங்கும்வரை அங்கேயே தங்கி இருங்கள். 11 எந்த ஊராவது உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மறுத்தாலோ அல்லது உங்கள் உபதேசங்களைக் கேட்க மறுத்தாலோ அந்த ஊரைவிட்டு விலகுங்கள். உங்கள் கால்களில் படிந்துள்ள தூசியையும் அங்கேயே உதறிவிட்டுச் செல்லுங்கள். அவர்களுக்கு இது ஒரு எச்சரிக்கையாக இருக்கும்” என்றார்.
12 சீஷர்கள் அந்த இடத்தை விட்டு விலகிப் பல இடங்களுக்கும் சென்றனர். அவர்கள் மக்களிடம் உபதேசம் செய்தனர். தங்கள் மனதையும், வாழ்க்கையையும் மாற்றிக்கொள்ளுமாறு போதித்தனர். 13 அவர்கள் பல பிசாசுகளை மக்களிடமிருந்து விரட்டினர். அவர்கள் நோயுற்ற மனிதர்களுக்கு ஒலிவ எண்ணெயைத் தடவிக் குணப்படுத்தினர்.
ஏரோதுவின் தவறான கணிப்பு
(மத்தேயு 14:1-12; லூக்கா 9:7-9)
14 இயேசு பிரபலமானபடியால் ஏரோது மன்னன் இயேசுவைப்பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டான். சில மக்கள், “இயேசுதான் யோவான் ஸ்நானகன். அவன் மரணத்தில் இருந்து எழுந்திருக்கிறான். அதனால்தான் அவரால் இது போன்ற அற்புதங்களைச் செய்ய முடிகிறது” என்றனர்.
15 இன்னும் சிலர், “இவர்தான் எலியா” என்றனர். மேலும் சிலரோ, “இயேசு ஒரு தீர்க்கதரிசி. இதற்கு முன்னால் வாழ்ந்த பல தீர்க்கதரிசிகளைப்போன்று இவரும் ஒருவர்” என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டனர்.
16 இயேசுவைப் பற்றிய இது போன்ற பல செய்திகளை ஏரோது அறிந்து கொண்டான். அவன், “நான் யோவானின் தலையை வெட்டிக் கொன்றுவிட்டேன். இப்போது யோவான் மரணத்தில் இருந்து எழுந்துவிட்டான்” என்று சொன்னான்.
யோவான் ஸ்நானகனின் மரணம்
17 ஏரோது தன் வீரர்களுக்கு யோவானைக் கைது செய்யுமாறு ஆணையிட்டான். அவனைச் சிறையில் அடைத்தான். தன் மனைவியைச் சந்தோஷப்படுத்துவதற்காகவே அவன் இவ்வாறு செய்தான். அவள் பெயரே ஏரோதியாள். இவள் முதலில் ஏரோதுவின் சகோதரனான பிலிப்புவின் மனைவியாக இருந்தாள். ஆனால் அவளைப் பின்னர் ஏரோது மணந்துகொண்டான். 18 ஏரோதிடம் இவ்வாறு சகோதரனின் மனைவியை மணந்துகொள்வது சரியன்று என யோவான் எடுத்துக் கூறினான். 19 எனவே ஏரோதியாள் யோவானை வெறுத்தாள். அவள் அவனைக் கொல்ல விரும்பினாள். ஆனால் அவளால் யோவானைக் கொன்றுவிடுமாறு ஏரோதுவைத் தூண்டிவிட முடியவில்லை 20 யோவானை கொல்ல ஏரோது பயந்தான். யோவான் ஒரு நல்ல பரிசுத்தமான மனிதன் என்று மக்கள் நம்புவதை அவன் அறிந்திருந்தான். ஆகையால் ஏரோது யோவானைக் காப்பாற்றி வந்தான். யோவானின் போதகத்தைக் கேட்பதில் ஏரோது பெருமகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தான். ஆனால் அவனது போதகம் ஏரோதை உறுத்தியது.
21 பிறகு யோவானைக் கொல்வதற்குப் பொருத்தமான வாய்ப்பு ஒன்று ஏரோதியாளுக்குக் கிடைத்தது. இது ஏரோதின் பிறந்த நாளன்று நிகழ்ந்தது. தன் பிறந்த நாளன்று ஏரோது மிக முக்கியமான அரசு அதிகாரிகளுக்கும், மிக முக்கியமான இராணுவ அதிகாரிகளுக்கும், கலிலேயாவின் பெரிய மனிதருக்கும் விருந்து கொடுத்தான். 22 ஏரோதியாளின் குமாரத்தி அந்த விருந்திற்கு வந்து நடனமாடினாள். அவள் ஆடும்போது, ஏரோதும் அவனைச் சார்ந்தவர்களும் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு உண்டனர்.
ஆகையால் ஏரோது மன்னன் அவளிடம், “நீ விரும்பும் எதையும் உனக்குத் தருவேன்” என்று உறுதி கூறினான். 23 “நீ எதைக் கேட்டாலும் தருவேன், எனது இராஜ்யத்தில் பாதியைக் கேட்டாலும் தருவேன்” என்று சத்தியம் செய்தான்.
24 அந்தப் பெண் தன் தாயிடம் சென்று, “நான் ஏரோது மன்னனிடம் எனக்கு என்ன வேண்டும் என்று கேட்பது?” எனக் கேட்டாள். அவளது தாயோ, “யோவான் ஸ்நானகனின் தலையைக் கேள்” என பதிலளித்தாள்.
25 உடனே விரைவாக அவள் மன்னனிடம் திரும்பி வந்தாள். அவள் மன்னனிடம், “யோவான் ஸ்நானகனின் தலையை எனக்குத் தாருங்கள். உடனே எனக்கு அதனைத் தட்டில் வைத்துத் தர வேண்டும்” என்று கேட்டாள்.
26 ஏரோது மன்னன் இதைக்கேட்டு வருத்தப்பட்டான். ஆனால் அவள் விரும்பும் எதையும் தந்துவிடுவதாக ஏற்கெனவே அவளிடம் ஆணையிட்டு சத்தியம் செய்துவிட்டான். மன்னனோடு உணவருந்திக் கொண்டிருந்த பெரிய மனிதர்களும் அவனது ஆணையை அறிந்திருந்தனர். ஆகையால் அவனால் அப்பெண்ணின் வேண்டுகோளை மறுக்கமுடியவில்லை. 27 உடனே யோவானின் தலையை வெட்டிக் கொண்டு வருமாறு ஒரு வீரனிடம் மன்னன் கட்டளையிட்டான். ஆகையால் அந்த வீரன் போய் சிறைக்குள் இருந்த யோவானின் தலையை வெட்டினான். 28 பிறகு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து எடுத்துக்கொண்டுவந்தான். அவன் அந்தத் தலையை அப்பெண்ணிடம் கொடுத்தான். அப்பெண் அதனைத் தன் தாயிடம் கொடுத்தாள். 29 அங்கு நடந்ததைப்பற்றி யோவானின் சீஷர்கள் அறிந்துகொண்டு, வந்து யோவானின் சரீரத்தைப் பெற்றுச் சென்றனர். அவர்கள் அதனை ஒரு கல்லறையில் அடக்கம் செய்தனர்.
5,000 த்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு உணவு
(மத்தேயு 14:13-21; லூக்கா 9:10-17; யோவான் 6:1-14)
30 இயேசுவால் உபதேசம் செய்ய அனுப்பப்பட்ட அவரது சீஷர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்தனர். அவர்கள் இயேசுவைச் சுற்றிக் கூடித் தாம் அனைவரும் செய்தவற்றையும் கற்பித்தவற்றையும் அவரிடம் சொன்னார்கள். 31 இயேசுவும், அவரது சீஷர்களும் மக்கள் நெருக்கடி மிக்க இடத்தில் இருந்தனர். அம்மக்கள் அளவில் மிக அதிகமாக இருந்தனர். இயேசுவுக்கும், அவரது சீஷர்களுக்கும் உணவு உட்கொள்ளக்கூட நேரம் இல்லாமல் இருந்தது. இயேசு தன் சீஷர்களிடம் “என்னோடு வாருங்கள். நாம் அமைதியான தனி இடத்துக்குப் போவோம். அங்கு நாம் ஓய்வு எடுக்கலாம்” என்றார்.
32 எனவே, இயேசுவும் அவரது சீஷர்களும் தனியாகச் சென்றனர். மக்களே இல்லாத இடத்துக்கு அவர்கள் படகில் சென்றனர். 33 ஆனால் அவர்கள் செல்வதை நிறைய மக்கள் கண்டனர். அந்த மக்களுக்கு அவர் இயேசு என்று தெரிந்தது. எனவே இயேசு செல்லுகிற இடத்துக்கு எல்லா நகர்களிலிருந்தும் ஏராளமான மக்கள் அங்கே ஓடினர். இயேசு போய்ச் சேர்வதற்கு முன்னரே அவர்கள் போய்ச் சேர்ந்துவிட்டனர். 34 இயேசு அங்கே போய்ச் சேர்ந்ததும் தனக்காக ஏராளமான மக்கள் காத்திருப்பதை அறிந்தார். அவர் அவர்களுக்காக மனம் உருகினார். ஏனென்றால், அவர்கள் மேய்ப்பன் இல்லாத மந்தையைப்போன்று கவனிக்க ஆளில்லாமல் இருந்தனர். எனவே அவர்களுக்கு இயேசு நிறைய உபதேசம் செய்தார்.
35 அன்று அதிக நேரமாயிற்று. எனவே, இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்தனர். அவர்கள், “இங்கு எந்த மக்களும் வாழவில்லை, மற்றும் வெகு நேரமாகிவிட்டது. 36 எனவே மக்களை அனுப்பிவிடும். அவர்களும் சுற்றி இருக்கிற பண்ணைகளுக்கும், நகர்களுக்கும் சென்று தேவையான உணவுப் பொருள்களை அவர்களாகவே வாங்கிக் கொள்வார்கள்” என்றனர்.
37 ஆனால் இயேசுவோ, “அவர்களுக்கு உண்ண நீங்கள் ஏதாவது கொடுங்கள்” என்றார்.
சீஷர்களோ இயேசுவிடம், “இவர்கள் அனைவரும் உண்ணுகிற அளவுக்கு நம்மால் அப்பத்தை வாங்கத் தேவையான பணத்துக்கு நாம் அனைவரும் ஒரு மாதக் காலத்துக்கு உழைத்துப் பணம் சம்பாதிக்க வேண்டும்” என்றனர்.
38 இயேசு, தன் சீஷர்களிடம், “உங்களிடம் எத்தனை அப்பங்கள் உள்ளன. போய்ப் பாருங்கள்” என்றார்.
சீஷர்கள் தங்களிடம் உள்ள அப்பங்களை எண்ணிப் பார்த்துவிட்டு இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “நம்மிடம் ஐந்து அப்பங்களும் இரண்டு மீன்களும் உள்ளன”, என்றார்கள்.
39 பிறகு இயேசு சீஷர்களிடம், “புல்லின் மேல் மக்கள் சிறு, சிறு குழுக்களாக உட்காரும்படி சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றார். 40 ஆகவே எல்லா மக்களும் குழுக்களாக அமர்ந்தனர். ஒவ்வொரு குழுவிலும் 50 அல்லது 100 பேர் இருந்தனர்.
41 இயேசு ஐந்து அப்பங்களையும் இரண்டு மீன்களையும் எடுத்துக் கொண்டார். அவர் வானத்தை ஏறிட்டுப் பார்த்தார். அந்த அப்பங்களுக்காக தேவனுக்கு நன்றி சொன்னார். பின்னர் இயேசு அப்பங்களை பங்கு வைத்துத் தன் சீஷர்களிடம் கொடுத்தார். அவற்றை மக்களுக்குக் கொடுக்குமாறு சொன்னார். மீனையும் அவ்வாறே பங்கிட்டு எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தார்.
42 எல்லா மக்களும் திருப்தியாக உண்டனர். 43 மக்கள் உண்டு முடித்ததும் எஞ்சியுள்ளவற்றைச் சீஷர்கள் பன்னிரண்டு கூடைகள் நிறைய சேகரித்தனர். 44 ஏறக்குறைய ஐயாயிரம் ஆண்கள் அன்று உணவு உண்டனர்.
இயேசு கடலின் மேல் நடத்தல்
(மத்தேயு 14:22-33; யோவான் 6:16-21)
45 பிறகு இயேசு சீஷர்களிடம் படகில் ஏறுமாறு சொன்னார். கடலின் அக்கரையில் உள்ள பெத்சாயிதாவுக்குப் போகும்படிக் கூறினார். தான் பிறகு வருவதாக இயேசு கூறியனுப்பினார். இயேசு அங்கே இருந்து அந்த மக்களைத் தம் வீடுகளுக்குச் செல்லுமாறு சொன்னார். 46 அந்த மக்களை இயேசு வழியனுப்பிய பின்பு பிரார்த்தனை செய்வதற்காக மலைக்குச் சென்றார்.
47 அன்று இரவு, அந்தப் படகு கடலின் நடுவிலேயே இருந்தது. இயேசுவோ தனியே கரையிலேயே இருந்தார். 48 கடலில் வெகு தூ ரம் படகு போய்விட்டதைக் கவனித்தார். அவரது சீஷர்கள் மிகவும் கஷ்டப்பட்டு துடுப்பு போடுவதையும் அறிந்தார். காற்றானது அவர்களுக்கு எதிராக அடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது. அதிகாலையில், மூன்று மணிக்கும் ஆறு மணிக்கும் இடைப்பட்ட நேரத்தில் அவர் தண்ணீரின் மேல் நடந்து நெருங்கினார். அவர்களைக் கடந்து போகிறவர்போல் காணப்பட்டார். 49 இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் அவர் தண்ணீரின் மேல் நடந்து போய்க்கொண்டிருப்பதைக் கண்டனர். அவர்கள் அவரை ஒரு ஆவி என்று நினைத்தனர். அவர்கள் அச்சத்தோடு கூச்சலிட்டனர். 50 எல்லாரும் இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து பயந்தனர். ஆனால் இயேசுவோ அவர்களிடம், “கவலைப்படாதீர்கள், நான் தான் பயப்படாதிருங்கள்” என்று தேற்றினார். 51 பிறகு அவர் சீஷர்கள் இருந்த படகினுள் ஏறிக்கொண்டார். காற்று அமைதியாயிற்று சீஷர்கள் பெரிதும் பிரமித்தார்கள். 52 அவர்கள் இயேசு ஐந்து அப்பங்களில் இருந்து மிகுதியான அப்பங்களை உருவாக்கியதைப் பார்த்தார்கள். ஆனால் அதனுடைய பொருளை அவர்களால் அறிந்துகொள்ள முடியவில்லை. அதை அறிந்துகொள்ளும் சக்தியும் அவர்களுக்கு இல்லை.
அநேக நோயாளிகளை இயேசு குணமாக்குதல்
(மத்தேயு 14:34-36)
53 இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் அக்கடலைக் கடந்தனர். அவர்கள் கெனெசரேத்தின் கரைக்கு வந்தனர். அங்கே படகைக் கட்டி வைத்தனர். 54 அவர்கள் படகை விட்டு இறங்கியபோது மக்கள் இயேசுவைப் பார்த்தனர். அவர் யாரென்று அவர்கள் அறிந்துகொண்டனர். 55 அம்மக்கள் ஓடிப்போய் அப்பகுதிகளில் உள்ள மக்களிடம் இயேசு இங்கே இருக்கிறார் என்பதை அறிவித்தார்கள். இயேசு போகிற எல்லா இடங்களிலும் மக்கள் நோயாளிகளைப் படுக்கையோடு எடுத்து வந்தனர். 56 அந்தப் பகுதிகளில் உள்ள ஊர்களுக்கும் நகரங்களுக்கும் பண்ணைகளுக்கும் இயேசு சென்றார். இயேசு எங்கே சென்றாலும் அங்குள்ள மக்கள் நோயாளிகளை அவரிடம் எடுத்து வந்தனர். அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் அவரது ஆடை நுனியையாவது தொடுவதற்கு அனுமதி கேட்டனர். அவரைத் தொட்டவர்கள் எல்லோரும் குணமடைந்தனர்.

Jesus é rejeitado em Nazaré
6 Jesus deixou essa região e voltou com seus discípulos para Nazaré, cidade onde tinha morado. 2 No sábado seguinte, começou a ensinar na sinagoga, e muitos dos que o ouviam se admiraram e perguntavam: “De onde vem tanta sabedoria e poder para realizar esses milagres? 3 Não é esse o carpinteiro, filho de Maria e irmão de Tiago, José,[a] Judas e Simão? Suas irmãs moram aqui, entre nós”. E sentiam-se muito ofendidos.
4 Então Jesus lhes disse: “Um profeta recebe honra em toda parte, menos em sua cidade e entre seus parentes e sua própria família”. 5 Por isso, não pôde realizar milagres ali, exceto pôr as mãos sobre alguns enfermos e curá-los. 6 E ficou admirado com a incredulidade daquele povo.
Jesus envia os doze apóstolos
Então Jesus percorreu diversos povoados, ensinando a seus moradores. 7 Reuniu os Doze e começou a enviá-los de dois em dois, dando-lhes autoridade para expulsar espíritos impuros. 8 Instruiu-os a não levar coisa alguma na viagem, exceto um cajado. Não poderiam levar alimento, nem bolsa de viagem, nem dinheiro.[b] 9 Poderiam calçar sandálias, mas não levar uma muda de roupa extra.
10 Disse ele: “Onde quer que forem, fiquem na mesma casa até partirem da cidade. 11 Mas, se algum povoado se recusar a recebê-los ou a ouvi-los, ao saírem, sacudam a poeira dos pés como sinal de reprovação”.
12 Então eles partiram, dizendo a todos que encontravam que se arrependessem. 13 Expulsaram muitos demônios e curaram muitos enfermos, ungindo-os com óleo.
A morte de João Batista
14 Logo o rei Herodes ouviu falar de Jesus, pois todos comentavam a seu respeito. Alguns diziam:[c] “João Batista ressuscitou dos mortos. Por isso tem poder para fazer esses milagres”. 15 Outros diziam: “É Elias”. Ainda outros diziam: “É um profeta, como os profetas de antigamente”.
16 Quando Herodes ouviu falar de Jesus, disse: “João, o homem a quem decapitei, voltou dos mortos!”.
17 O rei havia mandado prender e encarcerar João para agradar Herodias. Ela era esposa de seu irmão, Filipe, mas Herodes tinha se casado com ela. 18 João dizia a Herodes: “É contra a lei que o senhor viva com a esposa de seu irmão”. 19 Por isso Herodias guardava rancor de João e queria matá-lo, mas não podia fazê-lo, 20 pois Herodes o respeitava e o protegia, sabendo que ele era um homem justo e santo. Herodes ficava muito perturbado sempre que falava com João, mas mesmo assim gostava de ouvi-lo.
21 Finalmente, no aniversário de Herodes, Herodias teve a oportunidade que procurava. Ele deu uma festa para os membros do alto escalão do governo, para seus oficiais militares e para os cidadãos mais importantes da Galileia. 22 Sua filha, também chamada Herodias,[d] entrou e apresentou uma dança que agradou muito Herodes e seus convidados. “Peça-me qualquer coisa que deseje, e eu lhe darei”, disse o rei à moça. 23 E prometeu, sob juramento: “Eu lhe darei o que pedir, até metade do meu reino!”.
24 Ela saiu e perguntou à mãe: “O que devo pedir?”.
A mãe lhe disse: “Peça a cabeça de João Batista!”.
25 A moça voltou depressa ao rei e disse: “Quero a cabeça de João Batista agora mesmo num prato!”.
26 O rei muito se entristeceu com isso, mas, por causa do juramento que havia feito na frente dos convidados, não pôde negar o pedido. 27 Assim, enviou no mesmo instante um carrasco com ordens de cortar a cabeça de João e trazê-la. Ele decapitou João na prisão, 28 trouxe a cabeça num prato e a entregou à moça, que a levou à sua mãe. 29 Quando os discípulos de João souberam o que havia acontecido, foram buscar o corpo e o colocaram numa sepultura.
A primeira multiplicação dos pães
30 Os apóstolos voltaram de sua missão e contaram a Jesus tudo que tinham feito e ensinado. 31 Jesus lhes disse: “Vamos sozinhos até um lugar tranquilo para descansar um pouco”, pois tanta gente ia e vinha que eles não tinham tempo nem para comer.
32 Então saíram de barco para um lugar isolado, a fim de ficarem a sós. 33 Contudo, muitos os reconheceram e os viram partir, e pessoas de várias cidades correram e chegaram antes deles. 34 Quando Jesus saiu do barco, viu a grande multidão e teve compaixão dela, pois eram como ovelhas sem pastor. Então começou a lhes ensinar muitas coisas.
35 Ao entardecer, os discípulos foram até ele e disseram: “Este lugar é isolado, e já está tarde. 36 Mande as multidões embora, para que possam ir aos campos e povoados vizinhos e comprar algo para comer”.
37 Jesus, porém, disse: “Providenciem vocês mesmos alimento para eles”.
“Precisaríamos de muito dinheiro[e] para comprar comida para todo esse povo!”, responderam.
38 “Quantos pães vocês têm?”, perguntou ele. “Vão verificar.”
Eles voltaram e informaram: “Cinco pães e dois peixes”.
39 Então Jesus ordenou que fizessem a multidão sentar-se em grupos na grama verde. 40 Assim, eles se sentaram em grupos de cinquenta e de cem.
41 Jesus tomou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, olhou para o céu e os abençoou. Então, à medida que ia partindo os pães, entregava-os aos discípulos para que os distribuíssem ao povo. Também dividiu os peixes para que todos recebessem uma porção. 42 Todos comeram à vontade, 43 e os discípulos recolheram doze cestos com os pães e peixes que sobraram. 44 Os que comeram[f] foram cinco mil homens.
Jesus anda sobre o mar
45 Logo em seguida, Jesus insistiu com seus discípulos que voltassem ao barco e atravessassem o mar até Betsaida, enquanto ele mandava o povo para casa. 46 Depois de se despedir de todos, subiu sozinho ao monte para orar.
47 Durante a noite, os discípulos estavam no barco, no meio do mar, e Jesus, sozinho em terra. 48 Ele viu que estavam em apuros, remando com força e lutando contra o vento e as ondas. Por volta das três da madrugada,[g] Jesus foi até eles caminhando sobre o mar. Sua intenção era passar por eles, 49 mas, quando o avistaram caminhando sobre as águas, gritaram de pavor, pensando que fosse um fantasma. 50 Ficaram todos aterrorizados ao vê-lo.
Imediatamente, porém, Jesus lhes disse: “Não tenham medo! Coragem, sou eu!”. 51 Em seguida, subiu no barco e o vento parou. Os discípulos ficaram admirados, 52 pois ainda não tinham entendido o milagre dos pães. O coração deles estava endurecido.
Jesus cura os enfermos
53 Depois de atravessarem o mar, chegaram a Genesaré. Levaram o barco até a margem 54 e desceram. As pessoas reconheceram Jesus assim que o viram. 55 Quando ouviam que Jesus estava em algum lugar, corriam por toda a região, levando os enfermos em macas para onde sabiam que ele estava. 56 Aonde quer que ele fosse — aos povoados, às cidades ou aos campos ao redor —, levavam os enfermos para as praças. Suplicavam que ele os deixasse pelo menos tocar na borda de seu manto, e todos que o tocavam eram curados.

A Prophet Without Honor(A)
6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) 7 Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)
8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”
12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.
John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)
14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)
And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)
16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”
17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)
24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(AD)(AE)
30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)
39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Jesus Walks on the Water(AN)(AO)
45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)
47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)
53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

Sending Out the Twelve(K)

Feeding the Five Thousand(AF)
30 (AG)Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. 31 (AH)And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For (AI)there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 32 (AJ)So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.
33 But [f]the multitudes saw them departing, and many (AK)knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. 34 (AL)And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like (AM)sheep not having a shepherd. So (AN)He began to teach them many things. 35 (AO)When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. 36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves [g]bread; for they have nothing to eat.”
37 But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
And they said to Him, (AP)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”
38 But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”
And when they found out they said, (AQ)“Five, and two fish.”
39 Then He (AR)commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He (AS)looked up to heaven, (AT)blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42 So they all ate and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44 Now those who had eaten the loaves were [h]about five thousand men.
Jesus Walks on the Sea(AU)
45 (AV)Immediately He [i]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He (AW)departed to the mountain to pray. 47 Now when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land. 48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and (AX)would have passed them by. 49 And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a (AY)ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, (AZ)“Be[j] of good cheer! It is I; do not be (BA)afraid.” 51 Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind (BB)ceased. And they were greatly (BC)amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52 For (BD)they had not understood about the loaves, because their (BE)heart was hardened.
Many Touch Him and Are Made Well(BF)
53 (BG)When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 And when they came out of the boat, immediately [k]the people recognized Him, 55 ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered, into villages, cities, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged Him that (BH)they might just touch the (BI)hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made well.
