பக்கவாத வியாதிக்காரன் குணமாகுதல்
(மாற்கு 2:1-12; லூக்கா 5:17-26)
9 இயேசு ஒரு படகில் ஏரியைக் கடந்து மீண்டும் தம் சொந்த நகருக்குத் திரும்பினார். 2 பக்கவாத வியாதியினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட ஒருவனைச் சிலர் இயேசுவிடம் அழைத்து வந்தனர். அவன் படுக்கையில் படுத்திருந்தான். அம்மக்கள் மிகுந்த நம்பிக்கையோடு வந்திருந்ததை இயேசு கண்டார். எனவே இயேசு அந்த வியாதிக்காரனிடம், “வாலிபனே, மகிழ்ச்சியாயிரு. உன் பாவங்கள் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன” என்றார்.
3 இதைக் கேட்ட சில வேதப்போதகர்கள், “இந்த மனிதன் (இயேசு) தேவனைப் போலவே பேசுகிறான். இது தேவனை நிந்திக்கும் செயல்” என்று தங்களுக்குள்ளே பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள்.
4 அவர்கள் இவ்வாறு எண்ணியதை இயேசு அறிந்தார். எனவே இயேசு, “நீங்கள் ஏன் தீய எண்ணங்களைச் சிந்திக்கின்றீர்கள்? 5 பக்கவாத வியாதிக்காரனிடம் ‘உன் பாவங்கள் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன’, என்று கூறுவது எளிதா? அல்லது ‘எழுந்து நட’, என்று கூறுவது எளிதா? 6 ஆனால் மனித குமாரனுக்கு பூமியில் பாவங்களை மன்னிக்கும் வல்லமை இருப்பதை நான் உங்களுக்கு நிரூபிப்பேன்” என்று சொன்னார். பிறகு அந்த வியாதிக்காரனிடம் இயேசு, “எழுந்திரு, உன் படுக்கையை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு வீட்டிற்குச் செல்!” என்று கூறினார்.
7 அம்மனிதன் எழுந்து வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றான். 8 இதைக்கண்ட மக்கள் வியப்புற்றனர். இத்தகைய வல்லமையை மனிதனுக்கு அளித்ததற்காக அவர்கள் தேவனைப் புகழ்ந்தார்கள்.
இயேசு மத்தேயுவைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தல்
(மாற்கு 2:13-17; லூக்கா 5:27-32)
9 அங்கிருந்து இயேசு செல்லும்பொழுது, மத்தேயு என்ற மனிதனைக் கண்டார். மத்தேயு வரி அலுவலகத்தில் அமர்ந்திருந்தான், “என்னைத் தொடர்ந்து வா” என்று மத்தேயுவிடம் இயேசு கூறினார். உடனே மத்தேயு எழுந்திருந்து இயேசுவைப் பின் தொடர்ந்தான்.
10 இயேசு மத்தேயுவின் வீட்டில் விருந்துண்டார். வரி வசூலிப்பவர்கள் பலரும் தீயவர்கள் பலரும் வந்திருந்து இயேசுவுடனும் அவரது சீஷர்களுடனும் விருந்துண்டனர். 11 அத்தகைய மனிதர்களுடன் இயேசு விருந்துண்டதைப் பரிசேயர்கள் கண்டனர். பரிசேயர்கள் இயேசுவின் சீஷர்களிடம், “ஏன் உங்கள் குருவானவர் வரி வசூலிப்பவர்களுடனும் தீய மனிதர்களுடனும் உணவு உண்கிறார்?” என்று கேட்டனர்.
12 பரிசேயர்கள் இவ்வாறு கூறுவதை இயேசு கேட்டார். எனவே, இயேசு பரிசேயர்களிடம், “ஆரோக்கியமானவர்களுக்கு மருத்துவர் தேவையில்லை. நோயாளிகளுக்குத்தான் மருத்துவர் தேவை. 13 நான் உங்களுக்கு ஒன்றைக் கூறுகிறேன். அதன் பொருளைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். விலங்குகளைப் பலியிடுவதை நான் விரும்பவில்லை.(A) நான் மக்களிடம் கருணையை விரும்புகிறேன். நல்லவர்களை அழைக்க நான் வரவில்லை. பாவம் செய்தவர்களை அழைக்கவே நான் வந்தேன்” என்று கூறினார்.
வித்தியாசமான போதனை

14 பின்னர், யோவானின் சீஷர்கள் இயேசுவிடம் வந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், “நாங்களும் பரிசேயர்களும் அடிக்கடி உபவாசம் இருக்கிறோம். ஆனால், உங்கள் சீஷர்கள் உபவாசம் இருப்பதில்லை. ஏன்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள்.
15 அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “திருமணத்தின்போது, மணமகன் உடன் இருக்கும் பொழுது அவன் நண்பர்கள் சோகமாக இருப்பதில்லை. ஆனால் மணமகன் அவர்களிடமிருந்து பிரிக்கப்படும் நேரம் வரும். அப்பொழுது மணமகனின் நண்பர்கள் வருத்தம் அடைகிறார்கள். அப்பொழுது அவர்கள் உபவாசம் இருப்பார்கள்.
16 “ஒருவன் தன் பழைய சட்டையிலுள்ள ஒரு ஓட்டையை தைக்கும்பொழுது, சுருக்கமடையாத புதிய துணியைப் பயன்படுத்துவதில்லை. அப்படிச் செய்தால், இணைத்த துண்டுத்துணியானது சுருங்கி சட்டையிலிருந்து கிழிந்துவிடும். அதனால் ஓட்டை மேலும் மோசமடையும். 17 மேலும், மக்கள் ஒருபோதும் புதிய திராட்சை இரசத்தைப் பழைய திராட்சை இரசம் இருக்கும் பைகளில் வைப்பதில்லை. ஏனென்றால் பழைய திராட்சை இரசம் இருக்கும் பைகள் கிழிந்துவிடும். திராட்சை இரசமும் சிந்திவிடும். திராட்சை இரசப் பைகளும் வீணாகும். அதனால், மக்கள் எப்பொழுதும் புதிய திராட்சை இரசத்தை புதிய பைகளிலேயே ஊற்றுகிறார்கள். அதனால் திராட்சை இரசமும் பைகளும் நன்றாக இருக்கும்” என்றார்.
மரித்த பெண் உயிரடைதல், நோயாளிப் பெண் சுகமடைதல்

18 இயேசு இவற்றைக் கூறிக்கொண்டிருந்தபொழுது, யூத ஆலயத் தலைவன் ஒருவன் அவரிடம் வந்தான். அவன் இயேசுவை வணங்கி, “என் குமாரத்தி சற்றுமுன் இறந்துவிட்டாள். ஆனாலும், நீர் வந்து உமது கையால் அவளைத் தொடும். அவள் மீண்டும் உயிர் பிழைப்பாள்” என்றான்.
19 உடனே, இயேசு எழுந்து அவனுடன் சென்றார். இயேசுவின் சீஷர்களும் அவரைத் தொடர்ந்தார்கள்.
20 அப்பொழுது பன்னிரெண்டு வருடங்களாக இரத்தப்போக்கினால் அவதியுற்றுக்கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு பெண் இயேசுவின் பின் வந்து அவரது மேலங்கியின் நுனியைத் தொட்டாள். 21 அந்தப் பெண், “நான் இந்த மேலங்கியைத் தொட்டால் குணமடைவேன்” என எண்ணிக்கொண்டிருந்தாள்.
22 இயேசு திரும்பி அந்தப் பெண்ணைப் பார்த்து அவளிடம், “பெண்ணே, மகிழ்ச்சியாயிரு. நீ சுகமாக்கப்பட்டாய். ஏனென்றால், நீ விசுவாசித்ததினால் குணமாக்கப்பட்டாய்” என்றார். உடனே அந்தப் பெண் குணமாக்கப்பட்டாள்.
23 இயேசு அந்தத் தலைவனுடன் தொடர்ந்து சென்று, அவனது வீட்டிற்குள் சென்றார். சரீர அடக்கத்திற்கான இசை இசைப்போரை இயேசு அங்கு கண்டார். அந்தச் சிறுமி இறந்துவிட்டதனால், அழுதுகொண்டிருந்த பலரையும் இயேசு கண்டார். 24 இயேசு, “விலகிச் செல்லுங்கள். இச்சிறுமி இறக்கவில்லை. இவள் தூக்கத்திலிருக்கிறாள்” என்று சொன்னார். அதைக் கேட்ட அங்கிருந்த மக்கள் இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து நகைத்தனர். 25 அவர்கள் வீட்டிலிருந்து வெளியேற்றப்பட்டதும், இயேசு சிறுமியின் அறைக்குள் நுழைந்தார். இயேசு சிறுமியின் கரத்தைப் பிடித்தார். சிறுமி எழுந்து நின்றாள். 26 இச்செய்தி அத்தேசம் முழுவதும் பரவியது.
இயேசு பலரைக் குணமாக்குதல்
27 இயேசு அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுப் புறப்பட்டதும் இரு குருடர்கள் அவரைத் தொடர்ந்தார்கள். அக்குருடர்கள் உரத்த குரலில், “தாவீதின் குமாரனே, எங்களுக்குக் கருணை காட்டும்” என்று சொன்னார்கள்.
28 இயேசு வீட்டிற்குள் சென்றார். குருடர்கள் இருவரும் அவருடன் வீட்டிற்குள் நுழைந்தனர். இயேசு அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நீங்கள் பார்வை பெறுமாறு செய்ய என்னால் முடியுமென்று விசுவாசிக்கிறீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்குக் குருடர்கள், “ஆம், போதகரே, நாங்கள் விசுவாசிக்கிறோம்” என்று பதிலளித்தனர்.
29 பிறகு இயேசு அவர்களது கண்களைத் தொட்டு, “நீங்கள் பார்வை பெறுமாறு செய்ய என்னால் முடியுமென்று நம்புகிறீர்கள். எனவே அது நடக்கும்” என்று சொன்னார். 30 உடனே அவர்களால் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. பின் அவர், “இதைக் குறித்து யாரிடமும் கூறாதீர்கள்” என்று கண்டிப்புடன் சொல்லி அனுப்பினார். 31 ஆனால் அவர்கள் அங்கிருந்து சென்று இயேசுவைக் குறித்த செய்திகளை அப்பிரதேசமெங்கும் பரப்பினார்கள்.
32 அவர்கள் இருவரும் புறப்பட்டுச்சென்ற பின், சிலர் வேறொரு மனிதனை இயேசுவிடம் அழைத்து வந்தார்கள். இம்மனிதனைப் பிசாசு பிடித்திருந்ததினால் அவனால் பேச இயலவில்லை. 33 இயேசு அம்மனிதனிடமிருந்த பிசாசை விரட்டினார். பிறகு ஊமையான அம்மனிதனால் பேச முடிந்தது. அதனால் வியப்படைந்த மக்கள், “இஸ்ரவேலில் நாங்கள் ஒருபோதும் இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒன்றைக் கண்டதில்லை” என்று கூறினார்கள்.
34 ஆனால் பரிசேயர்கள், “பிசாசுகளை விரட்டுகிற வல்லமையை இயேசுவிற்குக் கொடுத்தது பிசாசுகளின் தலைவனே” என்று சொன்னார்கள்.
இயேசுவின் கரிசனை
35 இயேசு எல்லா நகரங்கள் மற்றும் கிராமங்கள் வழியாகப் பயணம் செய்தார். பரலோக அரசைப் பற்றிய நற்செய்தியை இயேசு யூதர்களின் ஜெப ஆலயங்களில் மக்களுக்குக் கூறினார். இயேசு எல்லாவகையான நோய்களையும் குணமாக்கினார். 36 திரளான மனிதர்களைக் கண்ட இயேசு அவர்களுக்காக வருத்தமடைந்தார். ஏனென்றால், மக்கள் கவலை கொண்டும் ஆதரவற்றும் இருந்தனர். மேய்ப்பன் இல்லாத ஆட்டு மந்தையைப்போல மக்கள் தங்களை வழிநடத்த மேய்ப்பனின்றி இருந்தனர். 37 இயேசு தம் சீஷர்களிடம், “ஏராளமான மக்கள் அறுவடைக்காக (காப்பாற்றப்பட) உள்ளனர். ஆனால் அவர்களை அறுவடை செய்வதற்கோ மிகச் சில பணியாளர்களே உள்ளனர். தேவனுக்கு உரியது அறுவடை (மக்கள்). 38 பிரார்த்தனை செய்யுங்கள். தேவன் மேலும் பலரைத் தம் அறுவடையைச் சேகரிக்க அனுப்புவார்” என்றார்.

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man(A)
9 Jesus got into a boat and went back across the ·lake [sea] to his own town. 2 [L And look/T behold] Some people brought to Jesus a man who was paralyzed and lying on a ·mat [cot; bed]. When Jesus saw ·the faith of these people [L their faith], he said to the paralyzed man, “·Be encouraged [Have courage; Take heart], ·young man [son; child]. Your sins are forgiven.”
3 Some of the ·teachers of the law [scribes] said to themselves, “·This man speaks as if he were God. That is blasphemy [L This man blasphemes]!”
4 ·Knowing [Perceiving] their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why are you thinking evil ·thoughts [L in your hearts]? 5 [L For] Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to tell him, ‘Stand up and walk’? 6 But ·I will prove to you [L so that you may know] that the Son of Man [C a title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14] has authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “Stand up, ·take [pick up] your ·mat [cot; bed], and go home.” 7 And the man stood up and went home. 8 When the ·people [crowds] saw this, they were ·amazed [filled with awe; afraid] and ·praised [glorified] God for giving ·power like this [such authority] to ·human beings [mankind; C the language echoes the Son of Man title just used by Jesus (v. 6), which the crowds misunderstand to mean simply “a human being”].
Jesus Chooses Matthew(B)
9 When Jesus was ·leaving [walking along], he saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s booth [C probably a tariff booth for taxing goods in transit]. Jesus said to him, “Follow me,” and he stood up and followed Jesus.
10 As Jesus was ·having dinner [L reclining; C around a low table; the posture for a formal banquet or dinner party] at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ·ate [L reclined together] with Jesus and his ·followers [disciples]. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked Jesus’ ·followers [disciples], “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors [C despised because they worked for the Roman rulers and were notorious for corruption and extortion] and sinners?”
12 When Jesus heard them, he said, “It is not the healthy people who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I ·want [desire; require; am pleased by] ·kindness [compassion; mercy] ·more than I want [L not] animal sacrifices [Hos. 6:6].’ [L For] I did not come to ·invite [call] ·good people [the righteous; C meaning the “self-righteous” who feel no need to repent] but to invite [call] sinners [C those who recognize their need to repent].”
Jesus’ Followers Are Criticized(C)
14 Then the ·followers [disciples] of John [C the Baptist] came to Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees often fast [C giving up eating for spiritual purposes], but your ·followers [disciples] don’t?”
15 Jesus answered, “The ·friends of the bridegroom [or wedding guests; L children of the wedding hall] ·are not sad [L cannot mourn] while he is with them [C Jesus is referring to himself; John 3:29; Rev. 19:7]. But the ·time [L days] will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast.
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk [C new] cloth over a hole in an old ·coat [garment]. If he does, the patch will shrink and pull away from the ·coat [garment], making the ·hole [tear] worse. 17 Also, people never pour new wine into old ·leather bags [wineskins]. Otherwise, the ·bags [wineskins] will ·break [burst; C because the fermenting wine expands], the wine will spill, and the ·wine bags [wineskins] will be ruined. But people always pour new wine into ·new [fresh] ·wine bags [wineskins]. Then both ·will continue to be good [are preserved].”
Jesus Gives Life to a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(D)
18 While Jesus was saying these things, a ·leader of the synagogue [L leader; official; ruler; C Mark 5:22 identifies him as a synagogue leader] came to him. He ·bowed down [knelt] before Jesus and said, “My daughter has just died. But if you come and lay your hand on her, she will live again.” 19 So Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] stood up and ·went with [L followed] him.
20 ·Then [L And look/T behold,] a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years [C probably a chronic menstrual disorder] came behind Jesus and touched the ·edge [or tassels; see Num. 15:38–39] of his ·coat [cloak; garment]. 21 [L For] She was thinking, “If I can just touch his clothes, I will ·be healed [get well; be saved].”
22 Jesus turned and saw the woman and said, “·Be encouraged [Have courage; Take heart], ·dear woman [L daughter]. ·You are made well because you believed [Your faith has saved/healed you].” And the woman was ·healed [made well; saved] from that moment on.
23 Jesus continued along with the ·leader [ruler; official] and went into his house. There he saw the ·funeral musicians [L pipe/flute players] and ·many people crying [a noisy crowd]. 24 Jesus said, “·Go away [Get out; Leave]. [L For] The girl is not dead, only asleep.” But the people ·laughed at [ridiculed] him. 25 After the crowd had been ·thrown [sent; put] out of the house, Jesus went into the girl’s room and took hold of her hand, and she ·stood up [arose]. 26 The ·news [report] about this spread ·all around the area [L throughout that whole land/region].
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men(E)
27 When Jesus was leaving there, two blind men followed him. They cried out, “·Have mercy [Take pity] on us, Son of David [C a title for the Messiah, a descendant of King David; 2 Sam. 7:11–16]!”
28 After Jesus went inside, the blind men went with him. He asked the men, “Do you believe that I can ·make you see again [L do this]?”
They answered, “Yes, Lord.”
29 Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “·Because you believe [L According to your faith], ·it will happen [L let it be done for you].” 30 Then ·the men were able to see [L their eyes were opened]. But Jesus warned them strongly, saying, “·Don’t tell anyone [L See that no one knows] about this.” 31 But the blind men left and spread the news about Jesus ·all around that area [L throughout that whole land/region].
Jesus Heals a Demon Possessed Man(F)
32 When the two men were leaving, [L look; behold] some people brought to Jesus ·another man who could not talk because he had a demon in him [a mute, demon-possessed man]. 33 After Jesus ·forced the demon to leave the man [drove/cast out the demon], he ·was able [began] to speak. The crowd was amazed and said, “·We have never seen anything like this [L Nothing like this has ever been seen/happened] in Israel.”
34 But the Pharisees said, “He forces [drives; casts] demons out by the power of the ·prince [ruler] of demons.”
The Harvest Is Great(G)
35 Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, ·preaching [proclaiming] the ·Good News [Gospel] about the kingdom, and healing all kinds of diseases and sicknesses. 36 When he saw the crowds, he ·felt sorry [had compassion] for them because they were ·hurting [distressed; confused; harassed] and ·helpless [discouraged; dejected], like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Jesus said to his ·followers [disciples], “·There are many people to harvest [L The harvest is great/large] but ·there are only a few workers [the workers/laborers are few]. 38 So pray to the Lord ·who owns [who is in charge of; L of] the harvest, that he will send more ·workers [laborers] ·to gather [L into] his harvest.”

Jesus Forgives Sins
9 Jesus got into a boat, crossed over, and came to his own town. 2 There people brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Take heart, son! Your sins are forgiven.”
3 Then some of the experts in the law said among themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”
4 Since Jesus knew their thoughts, he said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” he then said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”
7 The man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
Calling of Matthew
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s booth. He said to him, “Follow me.” Matthew got up and followed him.
10 As Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were actually there too, eating with Jesus and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “The healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’[a] In fact, I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
A Question About Fasting
14 Then John’s disciples came to him and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast at all?”
15 Jesus said to them, “Can the attendants of the bridegroom mourn while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, because the patch would tear away from the garment, and the hole would be made even worse. 17 And people do not pour new wine into old wineskins. If they did, the skins would burst, the wine would be spilled, and the skins would be ruined. Instead they pour new wine into fresh wineskins. By doing that, both are preserved.”
The Daughter of Jairus
18 As he was saying these things to them, there was a ruler who came, bowed down to him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, place your hand on her, and she will live.”
19 Jesus got up and followed him, as did his disciples. 20 Just then, a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years came up from behind and touched the fringe of his garment. 21 For she had been saying to herself, “If I just touch his garment, I will be healed.”
22 When Jesus turned around and saw her, he said, “Take heart, daughter! Your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment.
23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, 24 he said to them, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but is sleeping.”
But they laughed at him.
25 When the crowd was sent out of the house, Jesus went in, took the girl by the hand, and she was raised. 26 News of this went out through the entire region.
Two Blind Men
27 As Jesus left that place, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”
28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
They told him, “Yes, Lord.”
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done for you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus warned them emphatically, “See to it that no one learns about this.” 31 But they went out and spread the word about him throughout that entire region.
Jesus Heals a Mute Man
32 Just as they were leaving, people brought to him a demon-possessed man who could not talk. 33 After the demon was driven out, the mute man spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”
34 But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the ruler of demons.”
35 Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness.
Pray for Workers
36 When he saw the crowds, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were troubled and downcast, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers into his harvest.”

9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(B) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(C) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(D) he said to the man, “Take heart,(E) son; your sins are forgiven.”(F)
3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(G)
4 Knowing their thoughts,(H) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(I) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(J) who had given such authority to man.
The Calling of Matthew(K)
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(L) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[a](N) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(O)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(P)
14 Then John’s(Q) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(R) but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(S) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(T)
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(U)
18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(V) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(W) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(X) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(Y) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(Z) And the woman was healed at that moment.(AA)
23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(AB) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(AC) but asleep.”(AD) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(AE) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(AF)
Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(AG)
28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(AH)
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(AI) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(AJ) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(AK)
32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(AL) and could not talk(AM) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(AN)
34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”(AO)
The Workers Are Few
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(AP) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(AQ) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(AR) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(AS) is plentiful but the workers are few.(AT) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
