8 (A)Тогава Ефремовите синове казаха на Гедеон: Защо направи това? Защо не ни повика, когато отиде да воюваш против Мадиам? И се караха разпалено с него.
2 А той им отговори: Какво съм извършил аз сега в сравнение с вас? Ефремовите баберки не са ли по-добри от Авиезеровия гроздобер?
3 (B)Във вашите ръце Бог предаде мадиамските началници Орив и Зив; а какво съм могъл аз да извърша в сравнение с вас? Тогава гневът им към него утихна, след като той каза това.
4 Когато Гедеон дойде при Йордан, той премина с тристата мъже, които бяха с него. Въпреки че бяха уморени, те продължиха преследването.
5 (C)Там Гедеон каза на жителите на Сокхот: Дайте няколко хляба на народа, който върви след мене, защото са изнемощели; аз гоня мадиамските царе Зевей и Салман.

20 И каза на първородния си син Йетер: Стани, убий ги. Но младежът не изтегли меча си, защото се боеше, понеже беше още млад.
21 (O)Тогава Зевей и Салман казаха: Стани ти и ни нападни; защото според човека е и силата му. И така, Гедеон стана, уби Зевей и Салман и взе украшенията с форма на полумесец, които бяха на вратовете на камилите им.
22 Тогава Израилевите мъже казаха на Гедеон: Владей над нас ти и синът ти, и внукът ти, защото ти ни освободи от ръката на Мадиам.
23 (P)А Гедеон отговори: Нито аз ще владея над вас, нито синът ми ще владее над вас. Господ ще владее над вас.

25 А те отговориха: Ще ги дадем. И като простряха една дреха на земята, всеки хвърляше обиците от плячката си.
26 И теглото на златните обици, които Гедеон си поиска, беше хиляда и седемстотин златни сикъла, освен украшенията с форма на полумесец, огърлиците и моравите дрехи, които бяха върху мадиамските царе, и освен златните вериги, които бяха на вратовете на камилите им.
27 (R)От тях Гедеон направи ефод, който постави в града си, в Офра. Там целият Израил блудстваше след ефода; и той стана примка на Гедеон и дома му.
28 (S)Така Мадиам беше покорен пред израилтяните и не повдигна повече глава. И земята беше спокойна четиридесет години в дните на Гедеон.
29 Тогава Йероваал, Йоасовият син, отиде и заживя в дома си.
30 (T)Гедеон имаше седемдесет сина, родени на самия него, защото имаше много жени.
31 (U)Също и наложницата му, която беше в Сихем, му роди син, когото той нарече Авимелех.
32 (V)И Гедеон, Йоасовият син, умря в дълбока старост и беше погребан в гроба на баща си Йоас, в Офра Авиезерова.
33 (W)А когато Гедеон умря, израилтяните пак се обърнаха и блудстваха след ваалимите, поставиха си Ваалверит за бог.

8 Тогава ефремците казаха на Гедеона : Какво ни стори ти, че не ни повика, когато отиде да воюваш против Мадиама? И караха се силно с него.
2 А той им рече: Що съм извършил аз сега в сравнение с вас? Ефремовият пабирък не е ли по-желателен от Авиезеровия гроздобер?
3 В нашите ръце Бог предаде мадиамските началници, Орива и Зива; и що съм могъл аз да извърша в сравнение с вас? Тогава гневът им се укроти към него, когато каза това.
4 И като дойде Гедеон при Иордан, той премина с тристата мъже, които бяха с него, уморени, но пак преследвайки.

8 The men of Ephraim said to him, ‘Why have you done this to us, not calling us when you went to fight against the Midianites? ’ And they argued with him violently.
2 So he said to them, ‘What have I done now compared to you? Is not the gleaning(A) of Ephraim better than the grape harvest(B) of Abiezer? 3 God handed over to you Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian. What was I able to do compared to you? ’ When he said this, their anger against him subsided.
Gideon Pursues the Kings of Midian
4 Gideon and the three hundred men came to the Jordan and crossed it. They were exhausted but still in pursuit. 5 He said to the men of Succoth,(C) ‘Please give some loaves of bread to the troops under my command,[a] because they are exhausted, for I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.’
6 But the princes of Succoth asked, ‘Are Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hands that we should give bread to your army? ’
7 Gideon replied, ‘Very well, when the Lord has handed Zebah and Zalmunna over to me, I will tear[b] your flesh with thorns and briars from the wilderness! ’ 8 He went from there to Penuel and asked the same thing from them. The men of Penuel(D) answered just as the men of Succoth had answered. 9 He also told the men of Penuel, ‘When I return safely, I will tear down this tower! ’
10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and with them was their army of about fifteen thousand men, who were all those left of the entire army of the people of the east. Those who had been killed were one hundred and twenty thousand armed men. 11 Gideon travelled on the caravan route[c] east of Nobah(E) and Jogbehah and attacked their army while the army felt secure. 12 Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued them. He captured these two kings of Midian and routed the entire army.
13 Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle by the Ascent of Heres. 14 He captured a youth from the men of Succoth and interrogated him. The youth wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven leaders and elders of Succoth. 15 Then he went to the men of Succoth and said, ‘Here are Zebah and Zalmunna. You taunted me about them, saying, “Are Zebah and Zalmunna now in your power that we should give bread to your exhausted men? ” ’ 16 So he took the elders of the city, and he took some thorns and briars from the wilderness, and he disciplined the men of Succoth with them. 17 He also tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.
18 He asked Zebah and Zalmunna, ‘What kind of men did you kill at Tabor? ’
‘They were like you,’ they said. ‘Each resembled the son of a king.’
19 So he said, ‘They were my brothers, the sons of my mother! As the Lord lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.’ 20 Then he said to Jether, his firstborn, ‘Get up and kill them.’ The youth did not draw his sword, for he was afraid because he was still a youth.
21 Zebah and Zalmunna said, ‘Get up and strike us down yourself, for a man is judged by his strength.’ So Gideon got up, killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.
Gideon’s Legacy
22 Then the Israelites said to Gideon, ‘Rule over us,(F) you as well as your sons and your grandsons, for you delivered us from the power of Midian.’
23 But Gideon said to them, ‘I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you.’ 24 Then he said to them, ‘Let me make a request of you: Everyone give me an earring from his plunder.’ Now the enemy had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites.
25 They said, ‘We agree to give them.’ So they spread out a cloak, and everyone threw an earring from his plunder on it. 26 The weight of the gold earrings he requested was twenty kilograms[d] of gold, in addition to the crescent ornaments and ear pendants, the purple garments on the kings of Midian, and the chains on the necks of their camels. 27 Gideon made an ephod(G) from all this and put it in Ophrah, his home town. Then all Israel prostituted themselves by worshipping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his household.
28 So Midian was subdued before the Israelites, and they were no longer a threat. The land had peace for forty years(H) during the days of Gideon. 29 Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) son of Joash went back to live at his house.
30 Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring, since he had many wives. 31 His concubine who was in Shechem(I) also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech. 32 Then Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 When Gideon died, the Israelites turned and prostituted(J) themselves by worshipping the Baals and made Baal-berith[e] their god. 34 The Israelites did not remember the Lord their God(K) who had rescued them from the hand of the enemies around them. 35 They did not show kindness(L) to the house of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) for all the good he had done for Israel.

8 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?
3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.
4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
7 And Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.
12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.
13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,
14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.
15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.
22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.
27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.
28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.
31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.
32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.
34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
