7 Иеруб-Баал (он же Гедеон) и все его люди встали рано утром и расположились станом у источника Харод. Лагерь мадианитян находился к северу от них, в долине, рядом с холмом Море.
2 Вечный сказал Гедеону:
– Воинов с тобой слишком много. Я не стану отдавать мадианитян в их руки. Чтобы Исраил не мог гордиться предо Мной, что его спасла его собственная сила, 3 объяви воинам: «Всякий, кто боится и дрожит от страха, пусть уходит домой и оставит гору Галаад».
И двадцать две тысячи человек ушло, а десять тысяч осталось.
4 Но Вечный сказал Гедеону:
– Воинов всё ещё слишком много. Отведи их к воде, и там Я испытаю их для тебя. О ком Я скажу тебе: «Этот пойдёт с тобой», тот пойдёт, а о ком скажу: «Этот с тобой не пойдёт», тот и не пойдёт.
5 И Гедеон отвёл воинов к воде. Там Вечный сказал ему:
– Отдели тех, кто лакает воду языком, как собака, от тех, кто встал на колени, чтобы пить.
6 Триста воинов лакали воду языком, а все остальные, чтобы напиться, встали на колени, поднося воду ко рту руками.
7 Вечный сказал Гедеону:
– Тремя сотнями воинов, которые лакали, Я спасу вас и отдам мадианитян в ваши руки. Все остальные пусть идут домой. 8 И Гедеон отпустил всех остальных исраильтян по шатрам, но оставил триста воинов, которым достались запасы пищи и боевые рога ушедших.
А лагерь мадианитян находился внизу, в долине. 9 В ту же ночь Вечный сказал Гедеону:
– Встань, напади на лагерь, потому что Я отдам его в твои руки. 10 Если ты боишься напасть, спустись к лагерю вместе со своим слугою Пурой 11 и послушай, что они говорят. Это придаст тебе смелости напасть на лагерь.
Тогда Гедеон и его слуга Пура спустились к сторожевым заставам лагеря. 12 Мадианитяне, амаликитяне и другие восточные народы наводнили долину, словно саранча. Их верблюдов было так много, как песчинок на морском берегу.
13 Когда Гедеон пришёл, один человек рассказывал другу свой сон:
– Мне снился, – говорил он, – круглый ячменный хлеб, который катился в мадианский лагерь. Прикатившись к шатру, он ударил в него так, что шатёр опрокинулся и рухнул.
14 Его друг ответил:
– Это не что иное, как меч исраильтянина Гедеона, сына Иоаша. Аллах отдал мадианитян и весь лагерь в его руки.
15 Когда Гедеон услышал сон и его толкование, он поклонился Аллаху. Гедеон возвратился в исраильский лагерь и сказал:
– Вставайте! Вечный отдал в наши руки лагерь мадианитян.
16 Разделив триста воинов на три отряда, он дал всем им в руки рога и пустые сосуды с факелами внутри.
17 – Смотрите на меня, – сказал он им, – и делайте, как я. Когда я доберусь до края лагеря, делайте то же, что я. 18 Когда я и все, кто со мною, затрубим в наши рога, тогда и вы со всех сторон лагеря трубите в свои и кричите: «Меч за Вечного и за Гедеона!»
19 Гедеон и с ним сто воинов добрались до края лагеря в одиннадцатом часу ночи, сразу же после того, как сменили часовых. Они затрубили в рога и разбили кувшины, которые были у них в руках. 20 Тогда все три отряда затрубили в рога и разбили кувшины. Держа в левой руке факелы, а в правой – рога, в которые они трубили, они закричали: «Меч за Вечного и за Гедеона!» 21 Каждый человек стоял на своём месте вокруг лагеря, а все мадианитяне метались, крича на бегу.
22 Когда затрубили триста рогов, Вечный сделал так, что все, кто был в лагере, обратили свои мечи друг на друга. Войско бежало до самой Бет-Шитты к Церере, до самой границы Авель-Мехолы близ Таббата. 23 Исраильтяне из родов Неффалима, Ашира и из всего рода Манассы погнались за мадианитянами. 24 Гедеон послал вестников по всем нагорьям Ефраима:
– Спускайтесь с гор навстречу мадианитянам и захватите прежде них переправы через реки до самой Бет-Бары, а также через Иордан.
Все ефраимиты собрались и захватили переправы через Иордан и через реки до самой Бет-Бары. 25 Также они пленили двух мадианских вождей – Орива и Зива. Они убили Орива, когда преследовали мадианитян, у скалы Орива, а Зива – в давильне Зива. А головы Орива и Зива они принесли Гедеону, который находился у Иордана.

Gideon Defeats the Midianites
7 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal(A) (that is, Gideon(B)) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod.(C) The camp of Midian(D) was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.(E) 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength(F) has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.(G)’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many(H) men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them(I) drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.(J) Let all the others go home.”(K) 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.(L) 10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites(M) and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts.(N) Their camels(O) could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.(P)
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,(Q) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped.(R) He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”(S) 16 Dividing the three hundred men(T) into three companies,(U) he placed trumpets(V) and empty jars(W) in the hands of all of them, with torches(X) inside.
17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets,(Y) then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars(Z) that were in their hands. 20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches(AA) in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword(AB) for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.(AC)
22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded,(AD) the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other(AE) with their swords.(AF) The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah(AG) near Tabbath. 23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher(AH) and all Manasseh were called out,(AI) and they pursued the Midianites.(AJ) 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan(AK) ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. 25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb(AL). They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb,(AM) and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites(AN) and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.(AO)

Midian’s Defeat. 1 Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all of the people who were with him camped at the well of Harod. The Midianite army was to the north of them, in the valley by the hill of Moreh.
2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many people with you for me to deliver over the Midianites into your hands. Otherwise, Israel might vaunt themselves against me saying, ‘We have saved ourselves by our own efforts.’ 3 Announce to the people, ‘Whoever is afraid and panicking, let him go back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” Twenty-two thousand of the men left, and there were ten thousand left.
4 Then the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you. Of whomever I say to you, ‘This one will go with you,’ that is the one who will go with you. Of whomever I say to you, ‘This one will not go with you,’ that one will not go with you.” 5 He brought the men down to the water. The Lord said to Gideon, “You will set apart everyone who laps up water like a dog from anyone who kneels down to drink.” 6 There were three hundred men who lapped up water by holding their hands to their face. The rest of the men knelt down to drink their water. 7 The Lord said to Gideon, “I will save you through the three hundred men who lapped up their water. I will deliver the Midianites into your hands. Let everyone else go back home.”[a] 8 So they took the other people’s provisions, and they placed their trumpets in their hands. Gideon sent all the other Israelite men back to their homes, but he kept three hundred men with him.
The army of Midian was camped in the valley below them. 9 That same night the Lord said to him, “Rise up, go down against the army, for I have delivered them into your hands. 10 Draw near them until you can hear what they are saying, 11 and then your hands will be strengthened so that you can descend upon the camp.” So he and his servant Purah went down to the outskirts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites, and all of the other easterners were lying in the valley, as thick as locusts. There were so many camels that they could not be counted; there were as many of them as there is sand on the seashore.
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling his friend about a dream. He said, “I dreamed that a barley cake[b] came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It hit a tent so hard that it overturned and collapsed.” 14 His friend said, “This can only be the sword of Gideon, the son of Joash, the Israelite. God has delivered Midian and its entire army into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the content of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. He returned to the army of Israel and said, “Rise up, for the Lord has delivered the army of Midian into your hands.”
16 He divided the three hundred men into three groups, and he placed trumpets and empty jars with torches inside them into each man’s hands. 17 He said to them, “Watch me. Do whatever I do. When we reach the edge of the camp, do whatever I do. 18 When I and all those who are with me blow our trumpets, then blow your trumpets all around the camp and shout out, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon!’ ”
19 Gideon and the three hundred men who were with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands. 20 The three groups blew their trumpets and broke their jars, holding the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands. They blew their trumpets and cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon.”
21 While each man stood in his place around the camp, the army ran away crying. 22 When the three hundred men blew their trumpets, the Lord caused each man to attack his fellow soldiers with his sword. The army fled to Beth-shittah, toward Zeredah, coming to the border of Abel-meholah near Tabbath.[c]
23 The men of Israel from out of Naphtali, from out of Asher, and from out of Manasseh gathered together and pursued the Midianites. 24 Gideon sent messengers all throughout the hill country of Ephraim who said, “Come down against the Midianites, and capture the fords of the Jordan at Beth-barah before they reach them.” So all the men from Ephraim gathered together and captured the fords of the Jordan at Beth-barah. 25 They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, two of the princes of the Midianites. They killed Oreb upon the rock of Oreb, and they killed Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon who was alongside of the Jordan.
