12 У юні дні не забувай Творця до того, як біда покличе, до того, як прийдуть роки, коли вже скажеш: «Я не маю втіхи![a]»
2 Пам’ятай свого Творця, поки молодий, до того ще, як сонце й світло потьмяніють і почорніють зорі й місяць, і за грозою набігатиме гроза. 3 Не забувай Його до того, коли рукам твоїм не стане сили, коли підкосяться коліна у мужчин, повипадають зуби, і жувати буде нічим, не бачитимуть очі ясно. 4 Тоді і звуки з вулиці, немов крізь ставні, і навіть гуркіт жорен нечутним стане; пісень дівочих не почуєш, але пташиний спів тебе, безсонного, розбудить. 5 У той час ти боятимешся висоти й розбою на дорогах, коли волосся стане білим, як мигдаль, покритий цвітом, коли ходитимеш з трудом, як розжиріла сарана, коли бажань уже не буде,[b] коли в оселю вічну люди йдуть і їх жалобниці в останню путь проводять.
Про смерть
6 Поки ще цілий срібний ланцюжок
і келих золотий не похилився,
і глек біля струмка не тріснув,
й коловорот з колодязя не впав.
7 Повернеться у землю порох, звідки вийшов,
а дух життєвий вернеться до Бога, звідки вийшов.
8 «Все—вітер в полі,—каже Когелет,—усе марнота!»
Закінчення
9 Когелет був не лише мудрецем, але й сам далі навчав людей, давав їм знання. Він почув, перевірив і виправив чимало мудрих висловів. 10 Когелет намагався знайти втішні слова, написати дохідливі й правдиві рядки. 11 Слова мудреця, мов дубець для бика. Його переконливі слова, мов кілки, що вп’ялися в землю. Вони прийшли від одного пастуха. 12 А всього, що поза цим, сину мій, стережися! Книги пишуть безкінечно, а довге навчання віднімає багато сил.
13 Такий кінець усьому почутому: бійся Бога й тримайся Його заповідей—такий цілковитий обов’язок людини. 14 Адже Бог розсудить будь-яку справу, в тому числі й кожну приховану річ, хай добру чи лиху.

12 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

12 Remember(A) your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(B) come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
2 before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
3 when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
4 when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;(C)
5 when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(D)
and mourners(E) go about the streets.
6 Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
7 and the dust returns(F) to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God(G) who gave it.(H)
The Conclusion of the Matter
9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.(K) 10 The Teacher(L) searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.(M)
11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails(N)—given by one shepherd.[b] 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.
Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.(O)

12 (12:3) Mais souviens-toi de ton créateur pendant les jours de ta jeunesse, avant que les jours mauvais arrivent et que les années s'approchent où tu diras: Je n'y prends point de plaisir;
2 (12:4) avant que s'obscurcissent le soleil et la lumière, la lune et les étoiles, et que les nuages reviennent après la pluie,
3 (12:5) temps où les gardiens de la maison tremblent, où les hommes forts se courbent, où celles qui moulent s'arrêtent parce qu'elles sont diminuées, où ceux qui regardent par les fenêtres sont obscurcis,
4 (12:6) où les deux battants de la porte se ferment sur la rue quand s'abaisse le bruit de la meule, où l'on se lève au chant de l'oiseau, où s'affaiblissent toutes les filles du chant,
5 (12:7) où l'on redoute ce qui est élevé, où l'on a des terreurs en chemin, où l'amandier fleurit, où la sauterelle devient pesante, et où la câpre n'a plus d'effet, car l'homme s'en va vers sa demeure éternelle, et les pleureurs parcourent les rues;
6 (12:8) avant que le cordon d'argent se détache, que le vase d'or se brise, que le seau se rompe sur la source, et que la roue se casse sur la citerne;
7 (12:9) avant que la poussière retourne à la terre, comme elle y était, et que l'esprit retourne à Dieu qui l'a donné.
8 (12:10) Vanité des vanités, dit l'Ecclésiaste, tout est vanité.
9 (12:11) Outre que l'Ecclésiaste fut un sage, il a encore enseigné la science au peuple, et il a examiné, sondé, mis en ordre un grand nombre de sentences.
10 (12:12) L'Ecclésiaste s'est efforcé de trouver des paroles agréables; et ce qui a été écrit avec droiture, ce sont des paroles de vérité.
11 (12:13) Les paroles des sages sont comme des aiguillons; et, rassemblées en un recueil, elles sont comme des clous plantés, données par un seul maître.
12 (12:14) Du reste, mon fils, tire instruction de ces choses; on ne finirait pas, si l'on voulait faire un grand nombre de livres, et beaucoup d'étude est une fatigue pour le corps.
13 (12:15) Écoutons la fin du discours: Crains Dieu et observe ses commandements. C'est là ce que doit faire tout homme.
14 (12:16) Car Dieu amènera toute oeuvre en jugement, au sujet de tout ce qui est caché, soit bien, soit mal.
