Благословения за послушание и проклятия за непослушание

28 (A)Ако слушаш добре гласа на Господа, твоя Бог, и старателно изпълняваш всички Негови заповеди, които днес ти заповядвам, тогава Господ, твоят Бог, ще те издигне над всички племена на света.

2 (B)И всички тези благословения ще дойдат върху теб и ще те придружават, ако слушаш гласа на Господа, твоя Бог.

3 (C)Благословен ще бъдеш в града и благословен ще бъдеш на полето.

4 (D)Благословено ще бъде роденото от тебе, плодът на земята ти и роденото от добитъка ти, малките на говедата ти и овцете ти;

5 (E)благословени кошът ти и нощвите ти.

6 Благословен ще бъдеш при влизането си и благословен ще бъдеш при излизането си през градската порта.

7 (F)Господ ще поразява пред тебе неприятелите, които се надигат против тебе; по един път те ще излизат против теб, а по седем пътища ще бягат пред тебе.

8 (G)Господ ще заповяда да дойде благословение върху тебе в житниците ти и във всичките ти начинания и ще те благославя в земята, която Господ, твоят Бог, ти дава.

9 (H)Господ ще те утвърди като свят народ за Себе Си, както ти се е клел, ако пазиш заповедите на Господа, твоя Бог, и ходиш в Неговите пътища.

10 (I)И всички племена на света ще видят, че ти се наричаш с Господнето Име, и ще имат страх от тебе.

11 (J)Господ ще направи така, че да изобилстваш с блага, да изобилства плодът на утробата ти, плодът на добитъка ти и плодът на земята ти в страната ти, за която Господ се е клел на бащите ти да ти я даде.

12 (K)Господ ще ти отвори доброто Си съкровище – небето, за да дава дъжд на земята ти навреме и да благославя всички дела на ръцете ти; и ти ще заемаш на много народи, а няма да вземаш назаем.

13 (L)Господ ще те постави глава, а не опашка, и ще бъдеш само отгоре и няма да бъдеш отдолу, ако слушаш заповедите на Господа, твоя Бог, които днес ти заповядвам, да ги пазиш и вършиш.

14 (M)От думите, които днес ви заповядвам, да не се отклоняваш надясно или наляво и да не служиш на други богове.

15 (N)Но ако не слушаш гласа на Господа, твоя Бог, и не изпълняваш старателно всичките Му заповеди и наредбите Му, които днес ти давам, то всички тези проклятия ще дойдат върху теб и ще те придружават.

16 Проклет ще бъдеш в града и проклет ще бъдеш на полето.

17 Проклети ще бъдат кошът ти и нощвите ти;

18 проклети ще бъдат плодът на утробата ти и плодът на земята ти, малките на говедата ти и малките на овцете ти.

19 Проклет ще бъдеш при влизането си и проклет ще бъдеш при излизането си през градската порта.

20 (O)Господ ще изпраща върху тебе проклятие, смущение и разорение във всички начинания, с които се заемаш, докато бъдеш унищожен и погинеш скоро, заради злите дела, чрез които си Ме изоставил.

21 (P)Господ ще те порази, докато те унищожи в земята, в която отиваш, за да я владееш.

22 (Q)Господ ще те поразява с изтощение и огница, с треска и възпаление, със суша[a], с изсушителен вятър и с мана̀; и те ще те преследват, докато погинеш.

23 (R)Небето над главата ти ще бъде мед и земята под тебе желязо.

26 (T)Трупът ти ще бъде храна на всички въздушни птици и на земните зверове; и няма да има кой да ги отпъжда.

27 (U)Господ ще те поразява с египетския струпей, с кръвотечения, с краста и със сърбеж, от които да не можеш да се излекуваш.

28 (V)Господ ще те поразява с лудост, със слепота и с объркване в сърцето;

29 (W)и ще ходиш, като опипваш по пладне, както слепият пипа в тъмнината, и няма да имаш успех в работата[b] си; а ще бъдеш само притесняван и обиран всеки ден и няма да има кой да те избави.

30 Ще се сгодиш за жена, но друг мъж ще лежи с нея; къща ще построиш, но няма да живееш в нея; лозе ще насадиш, но няма да ядеш от плода му.

31 Говедото ти ще бъде заклано пред очите ти и няма да ядеш от него; оселът ти ще бъде грабнат пред теб и няма да ти бъде върнат; овцете ти ще бъдат предадени на неприятелите ти и няма да има кой да ги избави.

32 Синовете ти и дъщерите ти ще бъдат предадени на друг народ и очите ти ще гледат и ще чезнат по тях всеки ден, но ръцете ти не ще имат сила да им помогнат.

33 (X)Непознат народ ще изяде плода на земята ти и на целия ти труд; и ти ще бъдеш винаги само притесняван и измъчван.

34 (Y)Ще полудееш, като гледаш това, което ще виждат очите ти.

35 (Z)Господ ще те поразява с лошо възпаление в колената и в пищялите, така че няма да можеш да се изцелиш, от стъпалата на краката си до темето си.

36 (AA)Господ ще заведе теб и царя, когото си поставил над себе си, при народ, който не си познавал, нито ти, нито бащите ти; и там ще служиш на други богове, направени от дърво и камък.

37 (AB)И ще станеш за учудване, обект на поговорка и поругание за всички племена, между които Господ ще те отведе.

38 (AC)Много семе ще изнасяш на полето, а малко ще събираш, защото скакалците ще го изпояждат.

39 Лозя ще посаждаш и обработваш, а вино няма да пиеш от тях, нито ще събираш грозде, защото червей ще ги изяде.

40 Маслини ще имаш във всичките си предели[c], а с масло няма да се помазваш, защото маслините ти ще окапват.

41 (AD)Синове и дъщери ще раждаш, но те няма да бъдат за тебе, защото ще отиват в плен.

42 Всичките ти дървета и плодове на земята ти ята от скакалци ще ги унищожат.

43 Чужденецът, който е сред тебе, ще се издига все повече над теб, а ти ще пропадаш още надолу.

44 (AE)Той ще заема на теб, а ти няма да заемаш на него; той ще бъде глава, а ти ще бъдеш опашка.

45 (AF)Всички тези проклятия ще дойдат върху теб и ще те гонят, и ще те застигат, докато бъдеш унищожен; защото ти не послуша гласа на Господа, твоя Бог, за да пазиш заповедите Му и наредбите, които ти даде.

46 (AG)Това ще бъде завинаги знамение и чудо върху теб и потомството ти.

47 (AH)Понеже не си служил на Господа, твоя Бог, с веселие и на драго сърце поради изобилието на всичко,

48 (AI)затова ще слугуваш на неприятелите си, които Господ ще прати против тебе, в глад, в жажда, в голота и в лишения от всичко; и Той ще сложи на шията ти железен ярем, докато те погуби.

49 (AJ)Господ ще прати против тебе народ отдалеч, от земния край, който ще се спусне като орел; народ, чийто език не разбираш;

50 (AK)народ със свиреп изглед, който няма да почете стар, нито ще пожали млад;

51 (AL)и ще яде малките на добитъка ти и плода на земята ти, докато починеш; който няма да ти остави нито жито, нито вино, нито масло, нито малките от говедата ти, нито малките от овцете ти, докато те погуби.

52 (AM)Ще те обсади във всичките ти градове, докато по цялата ти земя изпопадат високите ти и укрепени стени, на които си разчитал; и ще те обсади във всичките ти градове по цялата земя, която Господ, твоят Бог, ти даде.

53 (AN)И тогава, при обсадата и притеснението, с което ще те притесни неприятелят ти, ще ядеш децата си, месата на синовете си и на дъщерите си, които Господ, твоят Бог, ти е дал.

54 (AO)Онзи мъж между вас, който е изтънчен и изнежен, ще бъде жесток с брат си, с жената, която почива в скута му, и с останалите деца, които му оцелеят,

55 и няма да даде на нито един от тях от месото на децата си, които ще яде; защото няма да му остане нищо при обсадата и притеснението, с което неприятелят ти ще те притесни във всичките ти градове.

56 (AP)Жената между вас, която е изтънчена и изнежена, която не би дръзнала да сложи на земята стъпалото на крака си по причина на изтънченост и изнеженост, ще бъде жестока с мъжа, който почива в скута ѝ, със сина си, с дъщеря си

57 (AQ)и с малкото си дете, което е излязло между краката ѝ, да! – с децата, които е родила; защото ще ги яде тайно поради лишението от всичко при обсадата и притеснението от страна на неприятеля ти в градовете ти.

58 (AR)Ако не изпълняваш старателно всички думи на този закон, които са написани в тази книга, и не се боиш от това славно и страшно име ЙЕХОВА, ТВОЯТ БОГ,

59 (AS)тогава Господ ще прати ужасни напасти върху теб и върху потомството ти, напасти големи и непрестанни, и болести зли и непрестанни.

60 (AT)И ще навлече върху тебе всичките египетски болести, от които ти се боеше, и ти ще се заразиш от тях;

61 още и всяка болест, и всяка напаст, които не са написани в книгата на този закон, Господ ще ги нанесе върху тебе, докато бъдеш изтребен.

62 (AU)Ще останете малко на брой – докато по многобройност бяхте като звездите на небето; защото ти не послуша гласа на Господа, твоя Бог.

63 (AV)И както беше драго на Господа да ви прави добро и да ви умножава, така ще бъде драго на Господа да ви унищожава и да ви погубва; и ще бъдете изкоренени от земята, в която отивате да я завладеете.

64 (AW)Господ ще те разпръсне между всички племена – от единия край на света до другия край на света; и там ще служиш на други богове, които нито ти си познавал, нито бащите ти, направени от дърво и камък.

65 (AX)Но и сред тези народи няма да намериш покой, нито ще има почивка за стъпалото на крака ти; но там Господ ще предизвика страх, отслабване на зрението ти и отчаяние в душата.

66 Ще живееш в неизвестност за бъдещето; и ти ще се боиш денем и нощем и няма да бъдеш сигурен за живота си.

67 Сутрин ще казваш: О, да мръкнеше! И вечер ще казваш: О, да съмнеше! Заради страха, с който ще се страхуваш, и заради зрелищата, които ще виждаш.

68 (AY)И Господ ще те върне в Египет с кораби по пътя, за който ти казах: Вече няма да го видиш. И там ще искате да се продадете на неприятелите си за роби и за робини; но няма да има кой да ви купува.

Blessings on Obedience(A)

28 “Now it shall come to pass, (B)if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God (C)will set you high above all nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and (D)overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:

3 (E)“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be (F)in the country.

4 “Blessed shall be (G)the [a]fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

5 “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

6 (H)“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

7 “The Lord (I)will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

8 “The Lord will (J)command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you (K)set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

9 (L)“The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways. 10 Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are (M)called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be (N)afraid of you. 11 And (O)the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord [b]swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open to you His good [c]treasure, the heavens, (P)to give the rain to your land in its season, and (Q)to bless all the work of your hand. (R)You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13 And the Lord will make (S)you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you [d]heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. 14 (T)So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right or the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

Curses on Disobedience(U)

15 “But it shall come to pass, (V)if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

16 “Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.

17 “Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

18 “Cursed shall be the [e]fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

19 “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

20 “The Lord will send on you (W)cursing, (X)confusion, and (Y)rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me. 21 The Lord will make the [f]plague cling to you until He has consumed you from the land which you are going to possess. 22 (Z)The Lord will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with severe burning fever, with the sword, with (AA)scorching,[g] and with mildew; they shall pursue you until you perish. 23 And (AB)your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron. 24 The Lord will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

25 (AC)“The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them; and you shall become [h]troublesome to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 (AD)Your carcasses shall be food for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and no one shall frighten them away. 27 The Lord will strike you with (AE)the boils of Egypt, with (AF)tumors, with the scab, and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed. 28 The Lord will strike you with madness and blindness and (AG)confusion of heart. 29 And you shall (AH)grope at noonday, as a blind man gropes in darkness; you shall not prosper in your ways; you shall be only oppressed and plundered continually, and no one shall save you.

30 (AI)“You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall lie with her; (AJ)you shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it; (AK)you shall plant a vineyard, but shall not gather its grapes. 31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat of it; your donkey shall be violently taken away from before you, and shall not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you shall have no one to rescue them. 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to (AL)another people, and your eyes shall look and (AM)fail with longing for them all day long; and there shall be [i]no strength in your (AN)hand. 33 A nation whom you have not known shall eat (AO)the fruit of your land and the produce of your labor, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually. 34 So you shall be driven mad because of the sight which your eyes see. 35 The Lord will strike you in the knees and on the legs with severe boils which cannot be healed, and from the sole of your foot to the top of your head.

36 “The Lord will (AP)bring you and the king whom you set over you to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and (AQ)there you shall serve other gods—wood and stone. 37 And you shall become (AR)an[j] astonishment, a proverb, (AS)and a byword among all nations where the Lord will drive you.

38 (AT)“You shall carry much seed out to the field but gather little in, for (AU)the locust shall [k]consume it. 39 You shall plant vineyards and tend them, but you shall neither drink of the (AV)wine nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. 40 You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil; for your olives shall drop off. 41 You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for (AW)they shall go into captivity. 42 Locusts shall [l]consume all your trees and the produce of your land.

43 “The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

45 “Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you [m]did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon (AX)you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever.

47 (AY)“Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart, (AZ)for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you, in (BA)hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He (BB)will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 (BC)The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, (BD)as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, (BE)which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you.

52 “They shall (BF)besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the Lord your God has given you. 53 (BG)You shall eat the [n]fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and your daughters whom the Lord your God has given you, in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you. 54 The [o]sensitive and very refined man among you (BH)will[p] be hostile toward his brother, toward (BI)the wife of his bosom, and toward the rest of his children whom he leaves behind, 55 so that he will not give any of them the flesh of his children whom he will eat, because he has nothing left in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you at all your gates. 56 The [q]tender and [r]delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her delicateness and sensitivity, [s]will refuse to the husband of her bosom, and to her son and her daughter, 57 her [t]placenta which comes out (BJ)from between her feet and her children whom she bears; for she will eat them secretly for lack of everything in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you at all your gates.

58 “If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear (BK)this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, 59 then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants (BL)extraordinary plagues—great and prolonged plagues—and serious and prolonged sicknesses. 60 Moreover He will bring back on you all (BM)the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed. 62 You (BN)shall be left few in number, whereas you were (BO)as the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God. 63 And it shall be, that just as the Lord (BP)rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the Lord (BQ)will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; and you shall be (BR)plucked[u] from off the land which you go to possess.

64 “Then the Lord (BS)will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and (BT)there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known—wood and stone. 65 And (BU)among those nations you shall find no rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting place; (BV)but there the Lord will give you a [v]trembling heart, failing eyes, and (BW)anguish of soul. 66 Your life shall hang in doubt before you; you shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of life. 67 (BX)In the morning you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were evening!’ And at evening you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were morning!’ because of the fear which terrifies your heart, and (BY)because of the sight which your eyes see.

68 “And the Lord (BZ)will take you back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said to you, (CA)‘You shall never see it again.’ And there you shall be offered for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Blessings for Obedience

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow(A) all his commands(B) I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.(C) 2 All these blessings will come on you(D) and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

3 You will be blessed(E) in the city and blessed in the country.(F)

4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.(G)

5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.(H)

7 The Lord will grant that the enemies(I) who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.(J)

8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless(K) you in the land he is giving you.

9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people,(L) as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands(M) of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name(N) of the Lord, and they will fear you. 11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock(O) and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(P)

12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse(Q) of his bounty,(R) to send rain(S) on your land in season and to bless(T) all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.(U) 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow(V) them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.(W) 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left,(X) following other gods and serving them.

Curses for Disobedience

15 However, if you do not obey(Y) the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today,(Z) all these curses will come on you and overtake you:(AA)

16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country.(AB)

17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.(AC)

18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.(AD)

19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.(AE)

20 The Lord will send on you curses,(AF) confusion and rebuke(AG) in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin(AH) because of the evil(AI) you have done in forsaking him.[a] 21 The Lord will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess.(AJ) 22 The Lord will strike you with wasting disease,(AK) with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought,(AL) with blight(AM) and mildew, which will plague(AN) you until you perish.(AO) 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron.(AP) 24 The Lord will turn the rain(AQ) of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed.

25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated(AR) before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven,(AS) and you will become a thing of horror(AT) to all the kingdoms on earth.(AU) 26 Your carcasses will be food for all the birds(AV) and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.(AW) 27 The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt(AX) and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. 29 At midday you will grope(AY) about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue(AZ) you.

30 You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her.(BA) You will build a house, but you will not live in it.(BB) You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit.(BC) 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation,(BD) and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. 33 A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression(BE) all your days.(BF) 34 The sights you see will drive you mad.(BG) 35 The Lord will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils(BH) that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.(BI)

36 The Lord will drive you and the king(BJ) you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your ancestors.(BK) There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone.(BL) 37 You will become a thing of horror,(BM) a byword(BN) and an object of ridicule(BO) among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(BP)

38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little,(BQ) because locusts(BR) will devour(BS) it. 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine(BT) or gather the grapes, because worms will eat(BU) them.(BV) 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off.(BW) 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.(BX) 42 Swarms of locusts(BY) will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

43 The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.(BZ) 44 They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them.(CA) They will be the head, but you will be the tail.(CB)

45 All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you(CC) until you are destroyed,(CD) because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever.(CE) 47 Because you did not serve(CF) the Lord your God joyfully and gladly(CG) in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst,(CH) in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke(CI) on your neck(CJ) until he has destroyed you.

49 The Lord will bring a nation against you(CK) from far away, from the ends of the earth,(CL) like an eagle(CM) swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,(CN) 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old(CO) or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine(CP) or olive oil,(CQ) nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.(CR) 52 They will lay siege(CS) to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.(CT)

53 Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.(CU) 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.(CV) 56 The most gentle and sensitive(CW) woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter(CX) 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them(CY) secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities.

58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law,(CZ) which are written in this book, and do not revere(DA) this glorious and awesome name(DB)—the Lord your God— 59 the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt(DC) that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law,(DD) until you are destroyed.(DE) 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky(DF) will be left but few(DG) in number, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as it pleased(DH) the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please(DI) him to ruin and destroy you.(DJ) You will be uprooted(DK) from the land you are entering to possess.

64 Then the Lord will scatter(DL) you among all nations,(DM) from one end of the earth to the other.(DN) There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.(DO) 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place(DP) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes(DQ) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.(DR) 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. 67 In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.(DS) 68 The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.(DT) There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.
