Яков в дома на Лаван
29 (A)Тогава Яков тръгна и отиде в земята на източните жители.
2 И видя кладенец на полето и там три стада овце, които почиваха при него, защото от онзи кладенец напояваха стадата; и върху отвора на кладенеца имаше голям камък.
3 И когато се събираха там всички стада, отместваха камъка от отвора на кладенеца и напояваха стадата; после пак слагаха камъка на мястото му над отвора на кладенеца.
4 Тогава Яков каза на овчарите: Братя, откъде сте? А те отвърнаха: От Харан сме.
5 Той ги попита: Познавате ли Лаван, Нахоровия син? Отговориха: Познаваме го.
6 (B)И им каза: Здрав ли е? А те отговориха: Здрав е; и, ето, дъщеря му Рахил идва с овцете.
7 А той каза: Вижте, още е много рано, не е време да се прибира добитъкът; напоете овцете и идете да ги пасете.
8 А те казаха: Не можем, докато не се съберат всички стада и не отместят камъка от отвора на кладенеца; тогава напояваме овцете.
9 (C)Докато още им говореше, дойде Рахил с бащините си овце, защото тя ги пасеше.
10 (D)А Яков, като видя Рахил, дъщерята на вуйчо си Лаван, и овцете на вуйчо си Лаван, Яков се приближи и отмести камъка от отвора на кладенеца; и напои стадото на вуйчо си Лаван.
11 (E)И Яков целуна Рахил и заплака с висок глас.
12 (F)Яков каза на Рахил, че е племенник на баща ѝ и че е син на Ревека; а тя се затича да извести на баща си.
13 (G)А Лаван, като чу за своя племенник Яков, затича се да го посрещне; и го прегърна, целуна го и го заведе у дома си. Тогава Яков разказа на Лаван всичко.
14 (H)Лаван му каза: Наистина ти си моя кост и моя плът. И Яков живя при него един месец.

15 След това Лаван каза на Яков: Ти си ми като брат, затова ще ми работиш ли безплатно? Кажи ми каква да ти бъде заплатата.
16 А Лаван имаше две дъщери; името на по-старата беше Лия, а името на по-младата Рахил;
17 на Лия очите не бяха здрави, а Рахил имаше хубава снага и хубаво лице.
18 (I)И Яков, понеже обикна Рахил, каза: Ще ти работя седем години за по-малката ти дъщеря Рахил.
19 Лаван отговори: По-добре да я дам на теб, отколкото на друг мъж; живей при мен.
20 (J)И така, Яков работѝ за Рахил седем години; но поради любовта му към нея те му се видяха като няколко дни.
21 (K)След това Яков каза на Лаван: Дай жена ми, защото дойде време да заживея с нея.
22 (L)И така, Лаван събра всички хора от това място и даде угощение.
23 А вечерта взе дъщеря си Лия и му я доведе; и той влезе при нея.
24 И Лаван даде слугинята си Зелфа за слугиня на дъщеря си Лия.
25 Но на сутринта Яков разбра, че беше Лия. И каза на Лаван: Какво е това, което ми направи ти? Нали за Рахил ти работих? Тогава защо ме излъга?
26 А Лаван отвърна: В нашето място няма обичай да се дава по-младата преди по-старата.
27 (M)Завършѝ сватбарската седмица с тази; и ще ти дам и онази за работата, която ще ми вършиш още седем години.
28 И Яков направи така; завърши седмицата с Лия и тогава Лаван му даде дъщеря си Рахил за жена.
29 А Лаван даде слугинята си Вала за слугиня на дъщеря си Рахил.
30 (N)И Яков заживя с Рахил и обикна Рахил повече от Лия; и работѝ на Лаван още седем години.
Потомството на Яков
31 (O)А Господ, понеже видя, че Лия не беше обичана, отвори утробата ѝ; а Рахил беше бездетна.
32 (P)И така, Лия зачена и роди син, и го наименуваха Рувим[a], защото си казваше: Господ погледна на неволята ми; сега мъжът ми ще ме обикне.
33 И пак зачена и роди син; и каза: Понеже Господ чу, че не съм любима, затова ми даде и този син; и го наименува Симеон[b].
34 Пак зачена и роди син; и каза: Сега вече мъжът ми ще се привърже към мене, защото му родих трима сина; затова го наименува Левий[c].
35 (Q)И пак зачена и роди син; и каза: Този път ще възхваля Господа; затова го наименува Юда[d]. И престана да ражда.

29 След това Яков продължи пътя си и отиде в земята на източните народи. 2 (A)Той видя в полето кладенец и там три стада дребен добитък, налягали около него, защото от този кладенец пояха стадата. Отгоре на кладенеца стоеше голям камък, който го затваряше. 3 Когато там се съберяха всичките стада, пастирите отместваха камъка от кладенеца и пояха овцете. После пак слагаха камъка на мястото му върху кладенеца. 4 Яков попита пастирите: „Откъде сте, братя?“ Те отговориха: „От Харан сме.“ 5 Тогава той ги попита: „Познавате ли Нахоровия син Лаван?“ Те отговориха: „Познаваме го.“ 6 Той продължи: „Здрав ли е?“ В отговор те казаха: „Здрав е, ето дъщеря му Рахил идва с овцете.“ 7 Яков добави: „Още е много рано. Не е време да се прибира добитъкът. Напоете овцете и идете да ги пасете.“ 8 Те казаха: „Не можем, докато не се съберат всички стада и докато не отместим камъка от кладенеца – тогава ще поим овцете.“
9 Докато той говореше с тях, дойде Рахил[a] с дребния добитък на баща си, понеже тя пасеше стадото. 10 Когато Яков видя Рахил, дъщерята на вуйчо му Лаван, и овцете му, приближи се, отмести камъка от кладенеца и напои овцете. 11 Тогава Яков целуна Рахил и заплака с висок глас. 12 Той каза на Рахил, че е роднина на баща ѝ и син на Ревека. А тя се затича към къщи и предаде това на баща си. 13 Като чу за своя племенник Яков, Лаван отиде да го посрещне и го прегърна. Целуна го и го заведе у дома си. Яков разказа на Лаван всичко за себе си. 14 Тогава Лаван му каза: „Наистина ти си моя кост и моя плът.“ Затова Яков живя при него цял месец.

15 След това Лаван каза на Яков: „Нима, като си ми роднина, ще ми работиш безплатно? Кажи ми каква да ти бъде заплатата?“ 16 А Лаван имаше две дъщери – по-голямата се казваше Лия, по-малката Рахил. 17 Очите на Лия бяха болнави, но Рахил беше прекрасна по лице и по снага. 18 Яков обикна Рахил и каза на Лаван: „Ще ти работя седем години за по-малката ти дъщеря Рахил.“ 19 Лаван отговори: „По-добре на тебе да я дам, отколкото на някой друг. Остани да живееш при мене.“ 20 За Рахил Яков работи седем години. Но те му се видяха като няколко дена – толкова я беше обикнал. 21 След това Яков каза на Лаван: „Дай ми девойката, защото дойде вече време да я взема за жена.“ 22 Лаван повика всички съседи и даде гощавка. 23 А когато се стъмни, той взе дъщеря си Лия и я въведе при него. Така Яков легна при нея. 24 Лаван даде робинята си Зелфа за робиня на дъщеря си Лия. 25 Но на сутринта се оказа, че това е било Лия. Яков викна към Лаван: „Какво направи ти с мене? Нали за Рахил ти работих? Защо ме измами?“ 26 Лаван отговори: „В нашия край няма обичай по-малката дъщеря да се дава преди по-голямата. 27 Като приключи сватбената седмица на тази ми дъщеря, тогава ще ти дадем и другата, но за нея ще ми работиш още седем години.“
28 Яков така и направи. Когато приключи сватбената седмица на Лия, Лаван му даде за жена дъщеря си Рахил. 29 Лаван даде и робинята си Вала за робиня на дъщеря си Рахил. 30 Яков легна с Рахил. Той обичаше Рахил повече, отколкото Лия. За нея работи още седем години.
Потомството на Яков
31 Понеже видя, че Лия беше нелюбима, Господ направи утробата ѝ плодовита, а Рахил се оказа безплодна. 32 Лия зачена и роди син. Тя го нарече Рувим[b], като каза: „Господ милостно погледна на нещастието ми. Сега вече мъжът ми ще ме обича.“ 33 Лия отново зачена и роди син. Тя каза: „Понеже Господ чу, че не съм обичана, даде ми и този син.“ Затова го нарече Симеон[c]. 34 Зачена пак и роди син, като си рече: „Сега вече мъжът ми ще се привърже към мене, защото му родих трима синове.“ Затова нарече новороденото Левий. 35 Лия отново зачена и роди син. За него каза: „Сега аз ще възхваля Господ.“ Затова го нарече с името Юда[d]. След това тя престана да ражда.

Jacob Arrives in Northwest Mesopotamia
29 Then Jacob continued his journey. He came to the land of the people of the East. 2 He looked and saw a well in the field. Three flocks of sheep were lying nearby, because they drank water from this well. A large stone covered the mouth of the well. 3 All the flocks would gather there. The shepherds would roll the stone away from the well and water the sheep. Then they would put the stone back in its place.
4 Jacob said to the shepherds there, “My brothers, where are you from?”
They answered, “We are from Haran.”
5 Then Jacob asked, “Do you know Laban grandson of Nahor?”
They answered, “We know him.”
6 Then Jacob asked, “How is he?”
They answered, “He is well. Look, his daughter Rachel is coming now with his sheep.”
7 Jacob said, “But look, it is still the middle part of the day. It is not time for the sheep to be gathered for the night. So give them water and let them go back into the pasture.”
8 But they said, “We cannot do that until all the flocks are gathered. Then we will roll away the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep.”
9 While Jacob was talking with the shepherds, Rachel came with her father’s sheep. It was her job to take care of the sheep. 10 Then Jacob saw Laban’s daughter Rachel and Laban’s sheep. So he went to the well and rolled the stone from its mouth. Then he watered Laban’s sheep. Now Laban was the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s mother. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and cried. 12 He told her that he was from her father’s family. He said that he was the son of Rebekah. So Rachel ran home and told her father.
13 When Laban heard the news about his sister’s son Jacob, Laban ran to meet him. Laban hugged him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban everything that had happened.
14 Then Laban said, “You are my own flesh and blood.”
Jacob Is Tricked
So Jacob stayed there a month. 15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “You are my relative. But it is not right for you to keep on working for me without pay. What would you like me to pay you?”
16 Now Laban had two daughters. The older was Leah, and the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel was very beautiful. 18 Jacob loved Rachel. So he said to Laban, “Let me marry your younger daughter Rachel. If you will, I will work seven years for you.”
19 Laban said, “It would be better for her to marry you than someone else. So stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob worked for Laban seven years so he could marry Rachel. But they seemed to him like just a few days. This was because he loved Rachel very much.
21 After seven years Jacob said to Laban, “Give me Rachel so that I may marry her. The time I promised to work for you is over.”
22 So Laban gave a feast for all the people there. 23 That evening Laban brought his daughter Leah to Jacob. Jacob and Leah had intimate relations together. 24 (Laban gave his slave girl Zilpah to his daughter to be her servant.) 25 In the morning Jacob saw that he had had intimate relations with Leah! He said to Laban, “What have you done to me? I worked hard for you so that I could marry Rachel! Why did you trick me?”
26 Laban said, “In our country we do not allow the younger daughter to marry before the older daughter. 27 But complete the full week of the marriage ceremony with Leah. I will give you Rachel to marry also. But you must serve me another seven years.”
28 So Jacob did this and completed the week with Leah. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife. 29 (Laban gave his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.) 30 So Jacob had intimate relations with Rachel also. And Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. Jacob worked for Laban for another seven years.
Jacob’s Family Grows
31 The Lord saw that Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. So the Lord made it possible for Leah to have children. But Rachel did not have any children. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben,[a] because she said, “The Lord has seen my troubles. Surely now my husband will love me.”
33 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon.[b] She said, “The Lord has heard that I am not loved. So he gave me this son.”
34 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Levi.[c] Leah said, “Now, surely my husband will be close to me. I have given him three sons.”
35 Then Leah gave birth to another son. She named him Judah.[d] Leah named him this because she said, “Now I will praise the Lord.” Then Leah stopped having children.

Jacob Arrives in Paddan Aram
29 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.(A) 2 There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well.(B) The stone(C) over the mouth of the well was large. 3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone(D) away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep.(E) Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.
4 Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?”(F)
“We’re from Harran,(G)” they replied.
5 He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”(H)
“Yes, we know him,” they answered.
6 Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?”
“Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel(I) with the sheep.(J)”
7 “Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”
8 “We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone(K) has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water(L) the sheep.”
9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep,(M) for she was a shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel(N) daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone(O) away from the mouth of the well and watered(P) his uncle’s sheep.(Q) 11 Then Jacob kissed(R) Rachel and began to weep aloud.(S) 12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative(T) of her father and a son of Rebekah.(U) So she ran and told her father.(V)
13 As soon as Laban(W) heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him(X) and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. 14 Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.”(Y)
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel
After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative(Z) of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages(AA) should be.”
16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah,(AB) and the name of the younger was Rachel.(AC) 17 Leah had weak[a] eyes, but Rachel(AD) had a lovely figure and was beautiful.(AE) 18 Jacob was in love with Rachel(AF) and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”(AG)
19 Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel,(AH) but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.(AI)
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.(AJ)”
22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.(AK) 23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah(AL) and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah(AM) to his daughter as her attendant.(AN)
25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me?(AO) I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?(AP)”
26 Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.(AQ) 27 Finish this daughter’s bridal week;(AR) then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.(AS)”
28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.(AT) 29 Laban gave his servant Bilhah(AU) to his daughter Rachel as her attendant.(AV) 30 Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah.(AW) And he worked for Laban another seven years.(AX)
Jacob’s Children
31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,(AY) he enabled her to conceive,(AZ) but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(BA) She named him Reuben,[b](BB) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.(BC) Surely my husband will love me now.”
33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,(BD) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[c](BE)
34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,(BF) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.[d](BG)
35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[e](BH) Then she stopped having children.(BI)
