33 Depois ordenou o Senhor a Moisés: “Saia deste lugar, com o povo que você tirou do Egito, e vá para a terra que prometi com juramento a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacó, dizendo: Eu a darei a seus descendentes. 2 Mandarei à sua frente um anjo e expulsarei os cananeus, os amorreus, os hititas, os ferezeus, os heveus e os jebuseus. 3 Vão para a terra onde manam leite e mel. Mas eu não irei com vocês, pois vocês são um povo obstinado, e eu poderia destruí-los no caminho”.
4 Quando o povo ouviu essas palavras terríveis, começou a chorar, e ninguém usou enfeite algum. 5 Isso porque o Senhor ordenara que Moisés dissesse aos israelitas: “Vocês são um povo obstinado. Se eu fosse com vocês, ainda que por um só momento, eu os destruiria. Agora tirem os seus enfeites, e eu decidirei o que fazer com vocês”. 6 Por isso, do monte Horebe em diante, os israelitas não usaram mais nenhum enfeite.
A Tenda do Encontro
7 Moisés costumava montar uma tenda do lado de fora do acampamento; ele a chamava Tenda do Encontro. Quem quisesse consultar o Senhor ia à tenda, fora do acampamento. 8 Sempre que Moisés ia até lá, todo o povo se levantava e ficava em pé à entrada de suas tendas, observando-o, até que ele entrasse na tenda. 9 Assim que Moisés entrava, a coluna de nuvem descia e ficava à entrada da tenda, enquanto o Senhor falava com Moisés. 10 Quando o povo via a coluna de nuvem parada à entrada da tenda, todos prestavam adoração em pé, cada qual na entrada de sua própria tenda. 11 O Senhor falava com Moisés face a face, como quem fala com seu amigo. Depois Moisés voltava ao acampamento; mas Josué, filho de Num, que lhe servia como auxiliar, não se afastava da tenda.

12 Disse Moisés ao Senhor: “Tu me ordenaste: ‘Conduza este povo’, mas não me permites saber quem enviarás comigo. Disseste: ‘Eu o conheço pelo nome e de você tenho me agradado’. 13 Se me vês com agrado, revela-me os teus propósitos, para que eu te conheça e continue sendo aceito por ti. Lembra-te de que esta nação é o teu povo”.
14 Respondeu o Senhor: “Eu mesmo o acompanharei, e lhe darei descanso”.
15 Então Moisés lhe declarou: “Se não fores conosco, não nos envies. 16 Como se saberá que eu e o teu povo podemos contar com o teu favor, se não nos acompanhares? Que mais poderá distinguir a mim e a teu povo de todos os demais povos da face da terra?”
17 O Senhor disse a Moisés: “Farei o que me pede, porque tenho me agradado de você e o conheço pelo nome”.
18 Então disse Moisés: “Peço-te que me mostres a tua glória”.
19 E Deus respondeu: “Diante de você farei passar toda a minha bondade, e diante de você proclamarei o meu nome: o Senhor. Terei misericórdia de quem eu quiser ter misericórdia, e terei compaixão de quem eu quiser ter compaixão”. 20 E acrescentou: “Você não poderá ver a minha face, porque ninguém poderá ver-me e continuar vivo”.
21 E prosseguiu o Senhor: “Há aqui um lugar perto de mim, onde você ficará, em cima de uma rocha. 22 Quando a minha glória passar, eu o colocarei numa fenda da rocha e o cobrirei com a minha mão até que eu tenha acabado de passar. 23 Então tirarei a minha mão e você verá as minhas costas; mas a minha face ninguém poderá ver”.

1 The Lord spoke to Moses: Go! You and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt are to go up from here to the land about which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: I will give it to your descendants.(A) 2 Driving out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, I will send an angel before you(B) 3 to a land flowing with milk and honey. But I myself will not go up in your company, because you are a stiff-necked people; otherwise I might consume you on the way. 4 When the people heard this painful news, they mourned, and no one wore any ornaments.
5 The Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to the Israelites: You are a stiff-necked people. Were I to go up in your company even for a moment, I would destroy you. Now off with your ornaments! Let me think what to do with you. 6 So, from Mount Horeb onward, the Israelites stripped off their ornaments.
Moses’ Intimacy with God. 7 Moses used to pitch a tent(C) outside the camp at some distance. It was called the tent of meeting. Anyone who wished to consult the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. 8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, the people would all rise and stand at the entrance of their own tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. 9 As Moses entered the tent, the column of cloud would come down and stand at its entrance while the Lord spoke with Moses. 10 On seeing the column of cloud stand at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise and bow down at the entrance of their own tents. 11 The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face,(D) as a person speaks to a friend. Moses would then return to the camp, but his young assistant, Joshua, son of Nun, never left the tent. 12 Moses said to the Lord, “See, you are telling me: Lead this people.(E) But you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said: You are my intimate friend;[a] You have found favor with me. 13 Now, if I have found favor with you, please let me know your ways so that, in knowing you, I may continue to find favor with you. See, this nation is indeed your own people. 14 The Lord answered: I myself[b] will go along, to give you rest. 15 Moses replied, “If you are not going yourself, do not make us go up from here. 16 For how can it be known that I and your people have found favor with you, except by your going with us? Then we, your people and I, will be singled out from every other people on the surface of the earth.” 17 The Lord said to Moses: This request, too, which you have made, I will carry out, because you have found favor with me and you are my intimate friend.
18 Then Moses said, “Please let me see your glory!” 19 The Lord answered: I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim my name, “Lord,” before you; I who show favor to whom I will, I who grant mercy to whom I will.(F) 20 But you cannot see my face,(G) for no one can see me and live.[c] 21 Here, continued the Lord, is a place near me where you shall station yourself on the rock. 22 When my glory passes I will set you in the cleft of the rock and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand, so that you may see my back; but my face may not be seen.

- 33:12 Intimate friend: lit., “know by name.” The root word meaning “know” or “make known” appears four times in vv. 12–13.
- 33:14 I myself: lit., “my face,” that is, “my presence.” The making of the calf (32:1–4) is an attempt to control the Lord’s presence. In response the Lord refuses to accompany the people (33:3) until Moses persuades him.
- 33:20 No one can see me and live: reflecting the tradition that to see God meant instant death. This is contradicted by the statements that Hagar (Gn 16:13), Jacob (Gn 32:31), and Manoah and his wife (Jgs 13:22) all “see God” and yet live (see also Ex 24:10–11).

33 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath(A) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’(B) 2 I will send an angel(C) before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.(D) 3 Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey.(E) But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked(F) people and I might destroy(G) you on the way.”
4 When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn(H) and no one put on any ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people.(I) If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy(J) you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.’” 6 So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.(K)
The Tent of Meeting
7 Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the “tent of meeting.”(L) Anyone inquiring(M) of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. 8 And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents,(N) watching Moses until he entered the tent. 9 As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud(O) would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke(P) with Moses. 10 Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to their tent.(Q) 11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face,(R) as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua(S) son of Nun did not leave the tent.
Moses and the Glory of the Lord
12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’(T) but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name(U) and you have found favor(V) with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways(W) so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”(X)
14 The Lord replied, “My Presence(Y) will go with you, and I will give you rest.”(Z)
15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence(AA) does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us?(AB) What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”(AC)
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked,(AD) because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”(AE)
18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”(AF)
19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass(AG) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,(AH) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.(AI) 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see(AJ) me and live.”
21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock(AK) and cover you with my hand(AL) until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”
