10-11 ヨシュアは指導者たちを集め、人々にヨルダン川を渡る準備をさせるよう命じました。そして、はっきりと宣言したのです。「三日以内にわれわれはヨルダン川を渡る。神様が与えてくださる地を占領するのだ。」

Joshua Installed as Leader
1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord,(A) the Lord said to Joshua(B) son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River(C) into the land(D) I am about to give to them(E)—to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot,(F) as I promised Moses.(G) 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,(H) and from the great river, the Euphrates(I)—all the Hittite(J) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.(K) 5 No one will be able to stand against you(L) all the days of your life. As I was with(M) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake(N) you. 6 Be strong(O) and courageous,(P) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors(Q) to give them.
7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey(R) all the law(S) my servant Moses(T) gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left,(U) that you may be successful wherever you go.(V) 8 Keep this Book of the Law(W) always on your lips;(X) meditate(Y) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.(Z) 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;(AA) do not be discouraged,(AB) for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”(AC)
10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:(AD) 11 “Go through the camp(AE) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions(AF) ready. Three days(AG) from now you will cross the Jordan(AH) here to go in and take possession(AI) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”
12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,(AJ) Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest(AK) by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives,(AL) your children and your livestock may stay in the land(AM) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle,(AN) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.(AO) You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”(AP)
16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.(AQ) 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you.(AR) Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey(AS) it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!(AT)”

2 さてヨシュアは、シティムの野営地から対岸へ二人の偵察者を送り込むことにしました。任務は、特にエリコの様子を調べることでした。二人は娼婦ラハブの家に着きました。そこで夜を過ごす計画だったのです。 2 ところがエリコの王に、「イスラエル人のスパイらしい、怪しい二人組が、今晩、町に忍び込んだ」と通報する者がありました。 3 王はすぐに憲兵隊をラハブの家に差し向け、二人の引き渡しを要求しました。「あいつらはスパイだぞ。イスラエルが送り込んだのだ。どうやってわれわれを攻撃しようか、探りに来たのだ。」
4 しかしラハブは、二人をかくまったまま、憲兵隊長に答えました。「ああ、あの人たちならとっくに帰ったよ。ここにいたんだけどねえ。まさかスパイだなんて、思いもよらなかったわ。 5 町の門が閉まるころ、夕闇にまぎれて町から出て行ったみたい。行き先までは知らないけど、急いで追いかければ捕まえられるかもしれないよ。」

8 ラハブは、二人がまだ寝ないうちに屋上に上って来て、彼らに言いました。 9 「あなたたちの神様が、この地をあなたたちのものにしようとしていることは、よくわかっています。みんな怖がっているわ。イスラエルと聞いただけで震え上がるほどよ。 10 だって、イスラエルの人たちがエジプトを出た時、神様が紅海に道をつくられたっていうじゃない。それに、ヨルダン川の東側にいたエモリ人の二人の王様、あのシホン王とオグ王をどんな目に会わせたかということも、みんな聞いてるわ。何でもそこを攻め落とし、住民を皆殺しにしたんですって？ 11 そんなことを聞いたら、怖がらないほうがおかしいでしょう。戦う勇気なんか吹っ飛ぶもの。あなたたちの神様はただの神様じゃないわね。きっと、天地を支配なさるお方に違いないわ。 12-13 だから、一つだけお願いを聞いてほしいの。このエリコを占領する時、いのちだけは助けてもらえないかしら。私の両親や兄弟、それにその家族も。そのことを、あなたたちの神様の聖なる御名にかけて誓ってください。あなたたちを助けた私の真心に応えてほしいのです。」

17-18 二人は別れぎわにこう言い残しました。「いいかい。この赤いひもを窓に結びつけておきなさい。そして、両親や兄弟など身内の者はみな、この家でいっしょにいなさい。そうでなければ、何が起きても責任はもてない。 19 一歩でもこの家から外へ出たら保証はないが、この家にいるかぎり、一人だって殺されたり傷つけられたりはしないと、はっきり約束しよう。 20 ただし、もしあなたが裏切れば、誓いは無効だ。いいね。」
21 「そのとおりにするわ。」こうしてラハブは、窓に赤いひもを結びつけました。
22 二人の偵察者は山へ逃げ、三日間身を隠しました。追っ手は二人を捜し回りましたが、ついに見つけることができず、すごすごと町へ引き返して行きました。 23 その後、二人は山を下りてヨルダン川を渡り、ヨシュアのもとへ帰って一部始終を報告しました。 24 「主は、あの地を全部、われわれに下さいます。間違いありません。住民はみな、われわれを死ぬほど恐れているのです。」

Rahab and the Spies
2 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies(A) from Shittim.(B) “Go, look over(C) the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.(D)” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab(E) and stayed there.
2 The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab:(F) “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”
4 But the woman had taken the two men(G) and hidden them.(H) She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate,(I) they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.”(J) 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax(K) she had laid out on the roof.)(L) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan,(M) and as soon as the pursuers(N) had gone out, the gate was shut.
8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof(O) 9 and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear(P) of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up(Q) the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt,(R) and what you did to Sihon and Og,(S) the two kings of the Amorites(T) east of the Jordan,(U) whom you completely destroyed.[b](V) 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear(W) and everyone’s courage failed(X) because of you,(Y) for the Lord your God(Z) is God in heaven above and on the earth(AA) below.
12 “Now then, please swear to me(AB) by the Lord that you will show kindness(AC) to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign(AD) 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them(AE)—and that you will save us from death.”
14 “Our lives for your lives!”(AF) the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully(AG) when the Lord gives us the land.”
15 So she let them down by a rope(AH) through the window,(AI) for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills(AJ) so the pursuers(AK) will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days(AL) until they return, and then go on your way.”(AM)
17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath(AN) you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord(AO) in the window(AP) through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family(AQ) into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads;(AR) we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head(AS) if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.(AT)”
21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”
So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord(AU) in the window.(AV)
22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days,(AW) until the pursuers(AX) had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands;(AY) all the people are melting in fear(AZ) because of us.”

37 悪者をうらやんではいけません。
2 しょせん、草のようにあっという間に枯れ、
消え失せる存在なのですから。
3 主に信頼して人を思いやり、親切にしなさい。
そうすれば、この地に安住し、
成功を収めることもできます。
4 主を喜びとしなさい。
主は心の願いをみな、かなえてくださいます。
5 自分のしようとすることをみな、主にゆだねなさい。
信頼する者を、主は助けてくださいます。
6 あなたの潔白は、だれの目にも明らかになります。
神は、真昼の太陽のように
まぶしい正義の光をあてて、弁護してくださいます。
7 すべてを主にゆだねて、安心しなさい。
神が立ち上がるまで、忍耐して待つのです。
悪者どもの繁栄ぶりをねたんではいけません。
8 怒るのをやめ、憤りを捨てなさい。
くよくよと思い悩んではいけません。
自分に害をもたらすだけです。
9 悪者は滅ぼされますが、
神に信頼する者には祝福が降り注ぎます。

15 しかし、彼らの剣は自分の心臓を突き刺し、
その武器はみな砕かれます。
16 不正な手段で金持ちになるより、
わずかな持ち物に甘んじて、
神を敬って過ごすほうがまさっています。
17 悪者の腕はへし折られますが、
罪を赦された人は主に守られて暮らせるからです。
18 主は毎日、神を敬う人の善行をごらんになり、
永遠のほうびをお与えになるのです。
19 彼らは逆境のときにも、神に守られています。
ききんの年にも飽き足りることができるのです。
20 しかし、悪者は滅びます。
主に敵対する者は草のようにしおれ、
煙のようにはかないのです。
21 悪者は借りても、返済できません。
しかし、正しい人は施しができるまでになります。
22 主に祝福された人はこの地上を相続しますが、
のろわれた者は滅びます。
23 正しい人は、主の導きに従って歩みます。

25 以前は若かった私も、今では年をとりました。

26 むしろ、神を敬う人は
惜しげもなく人々にふるまい、金を貸しており、

27 永遠の住まいに行きたいと願うなら、
卑劣な悪の道を捨て、正しい生活を送りなさい。
28 主は正義と公平を愛されるからです。
神はご自分の民を決してお見捨てになりません。
その人々は永遠に安全を保証されているのです。
反対に、悪の道を慕う者は滅びます。
29 神を敬う人はこの地に植えられて根を張り、
永遠に住むのです。
30-31 神を敬う人は正しく公平で、
善悪をわきまえているため、
すぐれた相談役を務めます。
32 悪者どもは神を敬う人をつけねらい、
何とか訴える口実を見つけ、
死罪に追い込もうと目を光らせます。
33 しかし、悪者どもの思いどおりになるのを、
主が見過ごされるはずがありません。
神を敬う人は、
法廷に引き出されるようなことがあっても、
有罪の判決を受けることはありません。
34 主が立ち上がってくださる時を、
じっと忍耐して待ちなさい。
そして、神の道をしっかり歩んで行くのです。
やがて、神が祝福をあふれるばかりに注ぎ、
あなたの名声を高めてくださる時がきます。
しかも、あなたは悪者が滅ぼされるのを
目の当たりにするのです。
35-36 この光景は私自身も目にしました。
そびえ立つレバノン杉のように、
おごり高ぶった悪者が、
次の瞬間には影も形もなくなっていたのです。
ひとみをこらして捜しましたが、
その姿は消え失せていました。
37 それに引き替え、正しい人はどうでしょう。
非の打ちどころもなく高潔で、
平和を愛するその人の未来は美しく輝いています。
すばらしい晩年が待っているのです。
38 しかし、悪者は滅ぼされ、子孫は根絶やしにされます。
39 神を敬う人は救われます。
苦しみのとき、主は救いとなり、
とりでとなってくださるのです。
40 主は、ご自分に頼る者を助け、

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious(A) of those who do wrong;(B)
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,(C)
like green plants they will soon die away.(D)
3 Trust in the Lord and do good;
dwell in the land(E) and enjoy safe pasture.(F)
4 Take delight(G) in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.(H)
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him(I) and he will do this:
6 He will make your righteous reward(J) shine like the dawn,(K)
your vindication like the noonday sun.
7 Be still(L) before the Lord
and wait patiently(M) for him;
do not fret(N) when people succeed in their ways,(O)
when they carry out their wicked schemes.(P)
8 Refrain from anger(Q) and turn from wrath;
do not fret(R)—it leads only to evil.
9 For those who are evil will be destroyed,(S)
but those who hope(T) in the Lord will inherit the land.(U)
10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;(V)
though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land(W)
and enjoy peace and prosperity.(X)
12 The wicked plot(Y) against the righteous
and gnash their teeth(Z) at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.(AA)
14 The wicked draw the sword(AB)
and bend the bow(AC)
to bring down the poor and needy,(AD)
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,(AE)
and their bows will be broken.(AF)
16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth(AG) of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,(AH)
but the Lord upholds(AI) the righteous.
18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,(AJ)
and their inheritance will endure forever.(AK)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.
20 But the wicked will perish:(AL)
Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.(AM)
21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;(AN)
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
but those he curses(AO) will be destroyed.(AP)
23 The Lord makes firm the steps(AQ)
of the one who delights(AR) in him;
24 though he may stumble, he will not fall,(AS)
for the Lord upholds(AT) him with his hand.
25 I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken(AU)
or their children begging(AV) bread.
26 They are always generous and lend freely;(AW)

27 Turn from evil and do good;(AY)
then you will dwell in the land forever.(AZ)
28 For the Lord loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.(BA)
Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed[c];

29 The righteous will inherit the land(BC)
and dwell in it forever.(BD)
30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,(BE)
and their tongues speak what is just.
31 The law of their God is in their hearts;(BF)
their feet do not slip.(BG)
32 The wicked lie in wait(BH) for the righteous,(BI)
intent on putting them to death;
33 but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked
or let them be condemned(BJ) when brought to trial.(BK)
34 Hope in the Lord(BL)
and keep his way.(BM)
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
when the wicked are destroyed,(BN) you will see(BO) it.
35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
flourishing(BP) like a luxuriant native tree,
36 but he soon passed away and was no more;
though I looked for him, he could not be found.(BQ)

自分を知者と思うな
3 愛する皆さん。私は皆さんに、クリスチャンの生活面について、まるで子どもに語るように書いてきました。実際あなたがたは、主に従わないで、好きかってにふるまっています。そんなあなたがたに、聖霊に満たされた人を相手にしているようには書けないからです。 2 つまり、堅い食物を避けてミルクを飲ませました。堅い食物の消化はむりだったからです。実は今でも、あなたがたはミルクしか飲めない状態です。 3 相変わらず、よちよち歩きもおぼつかないクリスチャンで、それは、あなたがたがねたみ合い、仲間割れをしていることからも明らかです。実際、あなたがたの態度ときたら、まるで主を信じていない人のようです。 4 「パウロとアポロとどちらが偉いか」などと口論して、教会を分裂させている現状では、主にあって少しも成長していないことをさらけ出しているようなものではありませんか。

10 神様は恵みによって、私に、どうしたら腕のよい建築家になれるかを教えてくださいました。私が土台をすえ、アポロがその上に建物を建てました。しかし、その土台の上に建物を建てるには、細心の注意が必要です。 11 私たちがすでに持っている本物の土台、イエス・キリスト以外に、土台をすえることなどだれにもできないのです。 12 しかし、この土台の上には、いろいろの材料で建てることができます。金や銀や宝石を使う人もいれば、また木や草、わらなどを用いる人もあります。 13 やがて、すべてがテストされる、キリストのさばきの日が来ます。その時には、建築家が各自どんな材料で建てたかが明白になります。それぞれの仕事は火でテストされ、なお価値が変わらないかどうか、ほんとうに完璧な建物かどうかが、だれの目にも明らかになります。 14 そして、その土台の上に適切な材料を使って建てた人は、建物がちゃんと残るので報いがあります。 15 しかし、家が焼けてしまった人は、大損害をこうむります。その人自身は、炎の中をくぐり抜けるように、命からがら逃げて救われるでしょうが。
16 あなたがたは自分たちが神の家であり、神の聖霊が自分の内に住んでおられることがわからないのですか。 17 もし神の家を汚したり、こわしたりする人がいれば、神様はその人を滅ぼされます。なぜなら、神の家は聖なるものだからです。あなたがたは、その神の家なのです。
18 自分をだますのはやめなさい。だれか、「自分は世の知者だ」と、もし考えているのなら、そんな考えは捨てて、愚か者になるほうが身のためです。天からの真の知恵を受ける妨げにならないためです。 19 この世の知恵は、神から見れば愚かだからです。聖書のヨブ記に、「神は人の知恵を、その人を捕らえるわなとして用いられる」（5・13）と書いてあるとおりです。つまり、人は自分の「知恵」につまずいて倒れるのです。 20 また、詩篇には、「主は、人間の考えや判断がどんな程度か、また、それがどんなに愚かしく無益か、よく知っておられる」（94・11）とあります。
21 ですから、この世の知者の弟子であることを誇ってはなりません。神様はすでに、あなたがたに必要なものは全部与えてくださっているのです。 22 パウロも、アポロも、ペテロも、あなたがたを助けるために神がお遣わしになったのです。神様は全世界を、あなたがたの益になるようにと与えてくださいました。生も死も、あなたがたのものなのです。現在のことも、将来のことも、すべては、あなたがたの手にあります。 23 そして、あなたがたはキリストのもの、キリストは神のものです。

The Church and Its Leaders
3 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(A) but as people who are still worldly(B)—mere infants(C) in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food,(D) for you were not yet ready for it.(E) Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(F) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(G) are you not mere human beings?
5 What, after all, is Apollos?(H) And what is Paul? Only servants,(I) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed,(J) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(K) 9 For we are co-workers in God’s service;(L) you are God’s field,(M) God’s building.(N)
10 By the grace God has given me,(O) I laid a foundation(P) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(Q) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(R) because the Day(S) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(T) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(U) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(V)
16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple(W) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?(X) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.
18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise(Y) by the standards of this age,(Z) you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(AA) in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[a];(AB) 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[b](AC) 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!(AD) All things are yours,(AE) 22 whether Paul or Apollos(AF) or Cephas[c](AG) or the world or life or death or the present or the future(AH)—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,(AI) and Christ is of God.
