やもめを救ったエリシャ
4 ある日、エリシャのもとを預言者仲間の一人の妻が訪ねて来て、夫の死を告げました。「夫は主を愛していました。ところが亡くなる時、いくらかの借金があったので、貸し主が返済を求めてきて、もし返せなければ二人の子どもを奴隷にするというのです。」
2 エリシャは彼女に言いました。「はて、どうしてあげたらいいのか。家には、どんな物があるのか？」
彼女は答えました。「油のつぼが一つあるだけで、ほかには何もありません。」
3 「では、近所の人々から、空っぽのかめや鉢をたくさん借りて来なさい。 4 帰ったら戸に鍵をかけ、子どもたちと家に閉じこもって、つぼにある油をかめや鉢にどんどんつぎなさい。」
5 女は言われたとおり、子どもたちが借りて来たかめや鉢に油をついでいきました。 6 まもなく、どの入れ物も口まであふれるほど、いっぱいになりました。「もっともっと、かめを持っておいで」と女は子どもに言いました。子どもが、「もうないよ」と言うと、そのとたんに油が止まりました。
7 女からそれを聞くと、預言者エリシャは言いました。「さあ、その油を売って、借金を返しなさい。その余りで、子どもたちと十分に暮らしていけるはずです。」
シュネムの女の息子をよみがえらせる
8 ある日、エリシャがシュネムの町へ行くと、裕福な婦人が彼を食事に招きました。その後も、そこを通るたびに、彼は立ち寄って食事をするようになりました。
9 女は夫に話しました。「お通りになるたびに立ち寄られるあの方は、きっと神の預言者に違いありません。 10 あの方のために、屋上に小さなお部屋を造って差し上げたいと思います。中には、寝台、机、いす、それに燭台を置きましょう。そうすれば、おいでになるたびに、そこでゆっくりお休みになれますから。」
11-12 ある日、エリシャはその部屋で休んでいましたが、しもべのゲハジを呼び、「奥様にちょっとお話ししたいことがあると伝えてくれ」と頼みました。彼女が来ると、 13 エリシャはゲハジに言いました。「まず、いつも親切にしてくださることのお礼を言ってくれ。それから、何かして差し上げられることがないか聞いてほしい。王様か将軍にでも、何か伝えてもらいたいことがあるかもしれないから。」
ところが、彼女は答えました。「私は今のままで満足しております。」
14 それでもエリシャは、「彼女のために何かしてやれることはないだろうか」と、あとでゲハジに尋ねました。ゲハジは言いました。「あの女には子どもがありません。それに、ご主人もかなりの年ですし……。」
15-16 「ではもう一度、奥さんを呼んでくれ。」
彼女が来ると、エリシャは、入口に立っている彼女に言いました。「来年の今ごろ、あなたに男の子が生まれます。」
「ご冗談はよしてください。預言者ともあろうお方が、私をからかわれるのですか。」彼女は思わず答えました。
17 しかし、それはほんとうのことでした。女はやがてみごもり、エリシャの言ったとおり、翌年の同じころに男の子を産んだのです。
18 その子が大きくなったある日、刈り入れ作業をしている人たちとともに働いている父親のところに行った時、 19 子どもはしきりに頭痛を訴え、苦しみ始めました。父親はしもべに、「抱いて母親のところへ連れて行きなさい」と言いました。 20 その子は家に連れ戻され、母親のひざに抱かれていましたが、昼ごろに息を引き取りました。 21 彼女は子どもをかかえて屋上の間にある預言者の寝台に運び、戸を閉めました。 22 それから、夫に使いをやって、「どうぞ、しもべにろば一頭をつけて寄こしてください。急いで、あの預言者様のところへ行って来ます。」
23 彼は、「どうしてまた、今日、あの人のところに行くんだね？ 特別な祝日でもないのに」と言いましたが、彼女は、「でも、どうしても行きたいのです」と答えました。
24 彼女はろばに鞍をつけると、しもべにこう言いつけました。「とにかく急いでおくれ。私の指示のないかぎり、手綱はゆるめてはなりません。」
25 エリシャは、カルメル山に近づいて来る彼女を遠くから見つけ、ゲハジに言いました。「見なさい。あのシュネムのご婦人がやって来る。 26 さあ、走って行って出迎え、何があったのか聞いてみるのだ。ご主人やお子さんはお元気かどうかと。」彼女はゲハジに、「ありがとうございます。別に変わりはございません」とだけ答えました。
27 ところが、山の上にいるエリシャのそばまで来ると、彼女はひれ伏して、彼の足にすがりつきました。ゲハジが引き離そうとすると、預言者は言いました。「そのままにさせておきなさい。何か大きな悩みがあるに違いない。それが何であるか、主はまだお告げになっていないのだ。」
28 女は言いました。「私に子どもが生まれると言われたのは、あなた様です。その時、からかわないでください、と申し上げたはずです。」
29 これを聞いたエリシャは、ゲハジに命じました。「大急ぎで、私の杖を持って行って、あの子の顔の上に置くのだ。途中、だれかに会ってもあいさつを交わしてはいけない。急ぎなさい。」
30 ところが、その子の母親は言いました。「主にかけて申し上げます。あなた様とごいっしょでなければ、決して家に帰りません。」そこで、エリシャも彼女といっしょにシュネムに向かいました。
31 ゲハジは先に行って、杖を子どもの顔の上に置きましたが、何の反応もなかったので引き返して来て、エリシャに、「あの子は死んだままです」と報告しました。
32 エリシャが着いてみると、なるほど子どもは死んでいて、寝台に寝かされています。 33 彼は中に入り、戸を閉めて主に祈りました。 34 それから小さいなきがらの上に体をかぶせ、自分の口をその子の口に、自分の目をその子の目に、自分の両手をその子の両手に重ねました。すると、子どもの体がだんだん温かくなってきました。 35 ここでエリシャは、いったん降り、部屋の中を何回か行ったり来たりしてまた寝台に戻り、再びその子の上に体をかぶせました。すると、その子は七回くしゃみをして、目を開いたのです。
36 預言者はゲハジを呼んで、「奥さんを呼んで来なさい」と命じました。彼女が入って行くと、エリシャは、「ほら、あなたのお子さんですよ」と言いました。 37 彼女はエリシャの足もとにひれ伏しました。それからその子を抱き上げると出て行きました。
かまの中の毒
38 エリシャがギルガルに戻ってみると、その地ではききんが起こっていました。ある日、若い預言者たちを教えている時、彼はゲハジを呼んで、「この人たちのために食事の用意をしなさい」と命じました。
39 若者の一人が野菜を取りに野へ行き、野生のうりを前掛けにいっぱい入れて帰って来ました。それに毒があるとも知らず、彼はそれを輪切りにして、かまに入れたのです。 40 ところが、みなが口にするや、「先生、大変です！ この煮物には毒が入っています！」と大騒ぎになりました。
41 しかし、エリシャは少しもあわてず、「麦粉を少し持って来なさい」とだけ言いました。そして麦粉をかまに投げ入れ、「さあ、これで大丈夫だ。どんどん食べなさい」と言いました。煮物の毒はすっかり消えていたのです。
パンの奇跡
42 ある日、バアル・シャリシャ出身の人が、エリシャのところに、新穀を一袋と、初穂で焼いた大麦のパン二十個を持って来ました。エリシャはゲハジに、これを若い預言者たちに食べさせるよう指示しました。 43 ゲハジは、「これっぽちのものを、百人もの人に食べさせるのですか」とあきれ顔で言いました。しかし、エリシャは言いました。「さあ、黙って食べさせなさい。『みんなに十分なだけある。食べ残す者もあるくらいだ』と、主は言われるのだから。」
44 そのとおりにすると、はたして、主が言われたとおりになったのです。

The Widow’s Olive Oil
4 The wife of a man from the company(A) of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor(B) is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”
2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”
“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”(C)
3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”
5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”
But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
7 She went and told the man of God,(D) and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”
The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life
8 One day Elisha went to Shunem.(E) And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. 9 She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay(F) there whenever he comes to us.”
11 One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.”(G) So he called her, and she stood before him. 13 Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’”
She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”
14 “What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.
Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”
15 Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 16 “About this time(H) next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”
“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”
17 But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.
18 The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers.(I) 19 He said to his father, “My head! My head!”
His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed(J) of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.
22 She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”
23 “Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon(K) or the Sabbath.”
“That’s all right,” she said.
24 She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25 So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.(L)
When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26 Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’”
“Everything is all right,” she said.
27 When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress,(M) but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”
28 “Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”
29 Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(N) take my staff(O) in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
30 But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”
32 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch.(P) 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed(Q) to the Lord. 34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched(R) himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times(S) and opened his eyes.(T)
36 Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.”(U) 37 She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.
Death in the Pot
38 Elisha returned to Gilgal(V) and there was a famine(W) in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.”
39 One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. 40 The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.
41 Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.(X)
Feeding of a Hundred
42 A man came from Baal Shalishah,(Y) bringing the man of God twenty loaves(Z) of barley bread(AA) baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.
43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.
But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat.(AB) For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.(AC)’” 44 Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

ナアマンとエリシャ
5 シリヤ（アラム）の王は、軍の最高司令官であるナアマン将軍を非常に重んじていました。ナアマンが軍隊を率いて、何度も輝かしい勝利を収めたからです。彼は押しも押されもしない偉大な英雄でしたが、なんと、ツァラアト（皮膚が冒され、汚れているとされた当時の疾患）にかかっていたのです。 2 かつてシリヤ軍がイスラエルに侵略した時、捕虜の中に若い娘がいて、ナアマンの妻の召使になっていました。 3 ある日、その少女が女主人に言いました。「だんな様は、サマリヤにいる預言者のところへ行かれたらよろしいのではないでしょうか。きっと、その方がツァラアトを治してくださいます。」
4 そこでナアマンは、少女のことばを王に話しました。 5 シリヤの王は、「その預言者のところへ行くがよい。イスラエルの王にあてて紹介状を書こう」と言いました。そこでナアマンは、贈り物として、金六千シェケル（六十八･四キログラム）と銀十タラント（三百四十キログラム）、それに着物十着を持って、イスラエルへ出発しました。 6 イスラエルの王への手紙には、こう書いてありました。「この書状をあなたに手渡す者は、私の家臣ナアマンです。ぜひとも、ナアマンのツァラアトを治してください。」
7 イスラエルの王は手紙を読むと、服を裂いて言いました。「シリヤの王め、ツァラアトの者をよこして、病気を治してくれと無理難題を吹っかけてきている。私は殺したり、生かしたりできる神だろうか。これは、侵略の口実を見つける罠に違いない。」
8 預言者エリシャは、イスラエルの王が苦境に立たされていることを知り、人を送って、次のように言いました。「なぜ、そんなに取り乱しているのですか。ナアマンをよこしてください。彼は、イスラエルには神の預言者がいることを知るでしょう。」
9 ナアマンは馬と戦車を従えて、エリシャの家の玄関に立ちました。 10 エリシャは使いの者をやって、言いました。「ヨルダン川へ行って、体を七回洗いなさい。そうすれば、ツァラアトは跡形もなくなり、完全に治ります。」 11 これを聞いたナアマンは、ひどく腹を立て、不きげんそうに言いました。「なんということだ。預言者がじきじきに出て来てあいさつし、患部に手をあて、彼の神の名を呼んでツァラアトを治してくれると思ったのに。 12 川で洗えだと？ それなら、ダマスコのアマナ川やパルパル川のほうが、イスラエルの川よりよっぽどきれいじゃないか。どうしても川で洗わなければならないというのなら、故郷の川でやったほうがまだましだ。」彼は憤慨しながらそこを去りました。
13 その時、部下がこう説き伏せたのです。「もしあの預言者に、何か難しいことをせよと言われたら、そうなさるおつもりだったのでしょう。それなら、体を洗って、きよくなれと言われただけのことですから、そのとおりになさってみたらいかがですか。」
14 それももっともです。ナアマンはヨルダン川へ下って行き、言われたとおり、七回、水に身を浸しました。すると、彼の皮膚は幼子のようにつやつやしてきて、すっかり治ったのです。
15 そこで、ナアマン一行は預言者のところへ引き返し、うやうやしく彼の前に立ちました。ナアマンは感謝にあふれて言いました。「今こそ、イスラエルのほかに、世界のどこにも神はおられないことがわかりました。どうぞ、この贈り物をお受けください。」
16 「私の主にかけて、そのような物を頂くわけにはまいりません。」
ナアマンはしきりに勧めましたが、エリシャはどうしても受け取ろうとしません。 17 しかたなく、ナアマンは言いました。「では、これだけはお聞き届け願えないでしょうか。どうぞ、二頭のらばに載せられるだけの土を分けてください。国に持ち帰りたいのです。これからはもう、主のほかには、どの神にもいけにえをささげたくありません。 18 しかし、一つだけお許しいただきたいことがあります。私の主君がリモンの神殿に参拝する時、私の腕に寄りかかります。その時、私もいっしょに身をかがめますが、そのことを主がお許しくださいますように。」
19 「よろしい。安心してお帰りなさい」というエリシャの返事を聞いて、ナアマンは帰って行きました。
20 ところが、エリシャのしもべゲハジはひそかに考えました。「だんな様のお人好しにも困ったものだ。贈り物を一つも受け取らずに、あの方を帰してしまうんだから。よし、あの方のあとを追いかけ、何か頂いて来よう。」
21 ゲハジはナアマンのあとを追いました。ナアマンはゲハジが走って来るのを見ると、戦車から降り、走り寄って迎えました。
「何かあったのですか。」
22 「はい。主人がお伝えしたいことがあると、私を使いに出したのでございます。たった今、若い預言者が二人、エフライムの山地から来まして、彼らに何かみやげをと思ったものですから。よろしければ、銀一タラント（三十四キログラム）と着物二着を分けていただけませんか。」
23 「よろしいですとも。なんなら、いっそ銀二タラントをお持ちください。」ナアマンは強く勧め、高価な着物二着と銀二タラントを二人の家来に持たせ、ゲハジといっしょに行かせました。 24 エリシャの家のある丘まで来ると、ゲハジは着物と銀の袋を受け取り、二人を帰しました。そして、受け取ったものを家の中に隠したのでした。 25 何くわぬ顔で主人の前に出たゲハジに、エリシャは尋ねました。「ゲハジ、どこへ行っていたのか。」
彼は答えました。「別に、どこにもまいりません。」
26 エリシャは言いました。「ナアマンが戦車から降りておまえを迎えるのを、私は心の目で見ていたのだ。今は、銀や着物、オリーブ畑やぶどう畑、羊や牛、男女の奴隷を受け取る時だろうか。 27 そんなことをしたからには、ナアマンのツァラアトは、いつまでも、おまえとおまえの子孫に降りかかることになる。」
ゲハジはたちまちツァラアトに冒され、肌が雪のように白くなって、エリシャの部屋から出て行きました。

Naaman Healed of Leprosy
5 Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram.(A) He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.[a](B)
2 Now bands of raiders(C) from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. 3 She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet(D) who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”
4 Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. 5 “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents[b] of silver, six thousand shekels[c] of gold and ten sets of clothing.(E) 6 The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”
7 As soon as the king of Israel read the letter,(F) he tore his robes and said, “Am I God?(G) Can I kill and bring back to life?(H) Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel(I) with me!”
8 When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: “Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet(J) in Israel.” 9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash(K) yourself seven times(L) in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”
11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand(M) over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters(N) of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.(O)
13 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father,(P) if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times,(Q) as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored(R) and became clean like that of a young boy.(S)
15 Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God(T). He stood before him and said, “Now I know(U) that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift(V) from your servant.”
16 The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.(W)
17 “If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth(X) as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. 18 But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning(Y) on my arm and I have to bow there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”
19 “Go in peace,”(Z) Elisha said.
After Naaman had traveled some distance, 20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord(AA) lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
21 So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.
22 “Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent[d] of silver and two sets of clothing.’”(AB)
23 “By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.
25 When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”
“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.
26 But Elisha said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time(AC) to take money or to accept clothes—or olive groves and vineyards, or flocks and herds, or male and female slaves?(AD) 27 Naaman’s leprosy(AE) will cling to you and to your descendants forever.” Then Gehazi(AF) went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous—it had become as white as snow.(AG)

83 ああ神よ、私たちが祈っているのに、じっと黙って、
何もしないでいることがありませんように。
祈りに答え、救い出してください。
2 あの、敵の興奮して騒ぎ立てる声が、
御耳に入らないのですか。
主を憎む者どもの目に余る行為が、
御目に留まらないのですか。
3 彼らは悪知恵を働かせて策略を練り、
あなたにとってかけがえのない人たちを
殺そうとしています。
4 「さあ、イスラエルを抹殺しよう。
そんな国があったという
痕跡さえ残らないようにするのだ。」
5 これが、彼らの首領たちの
一致した意見でした。

1 O God, do not remain silent;(A)
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God.
2 See how your enemies growl,(B)
how your foes rear their heads.(C)
3 With cunning they conspire(D) against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.(E)
4 “Come,” they say, “let us destroy(F) them as a nation,(G)
so that Israel’s name is remembered(H) no more.”
5 With one mind they plot together;(I)
they form an alliance against you—
6 the tents of Edom(J) and the Ishmaelites,
of Moab(K) and the Hagrites,(L)
7 Byblos,(M) Ammon(N) and Amalek,(O)
Philistia,(P) with the people of Tyre.(Q)
8 Even Assyria(R) has joined them
to reinforce Lot’s descendants.[b](S)

2 さて、次のことを勧めます。すべての人のために、神のあわれみが注がれるよう熱心に祈り、とりなしなさい。そして、やがて彼らにも恵みが与えられると信じて、感謝しなさい。 2 また、すべての重い責任を負っている人たちのために祈りなさい。それは、私たちが主を深く思いながら、平安のうちに落ち着いた一生を過ごすためです。 3 そうするのはたいへん良いことで、救い主である神に喜んでいただけることです。 4 神はすべての人が救われて、真理を理解するに至ることを切に望んでおられます。 5-6 その真理とはこうです。神と人間とは、それぞれ別の岸に立っています。そして、人となられたキリスト・イエスがその間に立ち、ご自分のいのちを全人類のために差し出すことによって、両者の橋渡しをされたのです。これこそ、時が至って、神が私たちに示された教えにほかなりません。 7 この真理、つまり、救いは信仰によって与えられるという神の計画を外国人に伝えるために、私は伝道者また使徒として選ばれました。これは、うそ偽りのない事実です。
8 そこで勧めます。男は、怒ったり恨みをいだいたりせずに、どこででも、きよい手を上げて祈りなさい。 9-10 同じように女も、控え目な服装と態度で、品位を保つように心がけなさい。神を敬う女は、はでな髪形や宝石、高価な衣装によってではなく、良い行いとやさしいふるまいによって自分を飾りなさい。 11 女は、静かに、謙遜な心で教えを聞き、また学ぶべきです。 12 女が男にものを教えたり、権力をふるったりするようなことがあってはなりません。女は、教会の集会では黙っていなさい。 13 なぜなら、神は最初にアダムを、そのあとでエバをお造りになったからです。 14 アダムは悪魔にだまされませんでしたが、エバはだまされ、罪を犯してしまいました。 15 そこで神は、女に子を産む時の苦しみをお与えになったのです。しかし、もし女が慎み深く、信仰と愛ときよさを持って生活するなら、そのたましいは救われます。

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,(A) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority,(B) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness(C) and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases(D) God our Savior,(E) 4 who wants(F) all people(G) to be saved(H) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.(I) 5 For there is one God(J) and one mediator(K) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,(L) 6 who gave himself as a ransom(M) for all people. This has now been witnessed to(N) at the proper time.(O) 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying(P)—and a true and faithful teacher(Q) of the Gentiles.(R)
8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands(S) without anger or disputing. 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(T) 10 but with good deeds,(U) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.(V) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet.(W) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(X) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(Y) 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(Z) and holiness with propriety.
