ヨナタンの活躍
14 一日二日が過ぎたころ、サウルの子の王子ヨナタンは、側近の若者に言いました。「さあ、ついて来い。谷を渡って、ペリシテ人の陣営に乗り込もう。」
このことは、父サウルには知らせていませんでした。 2 サウルと六百人の兵は、ギブア郊外のミグロンのざくろの木付近に陣を敷いていました。 3 その中には祭司アヒヤもいました。アヒヤはイ・カボデの兄弟アヒトブの子で、アヒトブはシロで祭司を務めたエリの子ピネハスの孫に当たります。ヨナタンが出かけたことは、だれ一人知りませんでした。
4 ペリシテ人の陣地へ行くには、二つの切り立った岩の間の狭い道を通らなければなりませんでした。二つの岩は、ボツェツとセネと名づけられていました。 5 北側の岩はミクマスに面し、南側の岩はゲバに面していました。
6 ヨナタンは従者に言いました。「さあ、あの主を知らない者たちを攻めよう。主が奇跡を行ってくださるに違いない。主を知らない兵の力など、どれほど大きかろうと、主には物の数ではない。」
7 若い従者は言いました。「そうですとも。あなたの思いどおりにお進みください。お供します。」
8 「そうか。では、こうしよう。 9 われわれが敵の目に留まったとき、『じっとしていろ。動くと殺すぞ！』と言われたら、そこに立ち止まって彼らを待とう。 10 もし『さあ、来い！』と言われたら、そのとおりにするのだ。それこそ、彼らを打ち負かしてくださる神のしるしだ。」
11 ペリシテ人は近づいて来る二人の姿を見かけると、「見ろ！ イスラエル人が穴からはい出て来るぞ！」と叫びました。 12 そしてヨナタンに、「さあ、ここまで来い。痛い目に会わせてやろう！」と大声で呼びかけるではありませんか。ヨナタンはそばの若者に叫びました。「さあ、あとから登って来い。主がわれわれイスラエルを助けて、勝利をもたらしてくださるぞ！」
13 二人は崖をよじ登り、ペリシテ人がしりごみするところを打ちかかり、ヨナタンと若者は右に左に切り倒しました。 14 この時に殺されたのは約二十人で、一くびきの牛が半日で耕す広さの場所に死体が散乱しました。 15 不意を突かれて、ペリシテ軍の全陣営、とりわけ先陣の部隊はパニックに陥りました。大地震にでも見舞われたように、恐怖におののきました。
16 ギブアにいたサウルの陣営では、見張りの番兵が思いがけない光景を目にしていました。ペリシテ人の大軍が、うろたえて右往左往し始めたのです。 17 サウルは、「だれかわれわれの陣営から消えた者がいるか調べろ」と命じました。調べると、ヨナタンと側近の若者がいません。 18 サウルはアヒヤに、「神の箱を持って来なさい」と叫びました。そのころ、神の箱はイスラエル人の間にあったのです。 19 サウルが祭司と話している間に、ペリシテ人の陣営の騒ぎは、ますます大きくなっていきました。
サウルは祭司に、「もうよい」と言って、 20 六百人の兵とともに大急ぎで戦場に駆けつけました。すると、ペリシテ人が同士打ちをしており、どこもかしこも収拾がつかない有様です。 21 それまでペリシテ軍に徴兵されていたヘブル人も、寝返ってイスラエル側につきました。 22 ついには、山地に隠れていた者まで、ペリシテ人が逃げ出すのを見て、追撃に加わりました。 23 こうして、この日、主はイスラエルを救い、戦闘はベテ・アベンに場所を移していきました。
24-25 この日、サウルは民に命じていました。「夕方まで、つまり、私が完全に敵に復讐するまで、食べ物を何も口にするな。もし食べる者がいれば、のろわれる。」それで、森に入ると地面にみつばちの巣があったのに兵士たちは目もくれず、まる一日、何も食べていませんでした。 26 サウルののろいを恐れていたからです。 27 ところが、ヨナタンは父の命令を知りません。手にしていた杖をみつばちの巣のみつにちょっと浸してなめてみました。すると、体中に力がわいてきたのです。 28 その時、ヨナタンにだれかが耳打ちしました。「お父上は、今日、食物を口にする者にのろいをおかけになったのですよ。ですから、みんなへとへとに疲れているのです。」
29 「なんということだ！」ヨナタンは思わず叫びました。「そんな命令は、みんなを苦しめるだけだ。このみつをちょっとなめただけでも、私は元気になった。 30 もしわが軍が、敵陣で見つけた食糧を自由に食べてよいことになっていたら、もっと多くのペリシテ人を打ち殺せたろうに。」
31 一日中すきっ腹をかかえたまま、彼らは、ミクマスからアヤロンにかけてペリシテ人を追いかけ、彼らを討ったのです。そのため、みな、ぐったりしていました。 32 夕方になると、人々は戦利品に飛びつき、羊、牛、子牛などをほふり、血のしたたる肉に食らいつきました。 33 だれかがこの様子をサウルに告げ、血が残ったままの肉を食べて主に罪を犯していると非難しました。
「けしからん！」サウルは腹を立て、こう言い渡しました。「大きな石をここに転がして来なさい。 34 そして、隊中にふれ回り、牛や羊を連れて来て殺し、血を絞り出すよう命じるのだ。血が残ったままの肉を食べて、主に罪を犯してはならない。」
人々は言われたとおりにしました。 35 そしてサウルは、主のために祭壇を築いたのです。これは彼が築いた最初の祭壇でした。
36 それからサウルは、「さあ、夜通しペリシテ人を追い、最後の一人まで打ってしまおうではないか」と気勢を上げました。従者たちは、「それはいい。お考えどおりにしましょう」と答えました。ところが祭司は、「まず、神様にお伺いを立てましょう」と言いました。 37 そこでサウルは、「ペリシテ人を追うべきでしょうか。敵を打ち負かすのをお助けいただけますか」と、神に答えを請いました。しかし、夜が明けても何の返事もありません。 38 そこでサウルは兵士の長を集め、「何かまずいことがあったのだ。今日、どんな罪が犯されたのか、はっきりさせる必要がある。 39 イスラエルを救ってくださった主の御名にかけて誓う。罪を犯した者は、たとえわが子ヨナタンであろうと死ななければならない。」
しかし、だれも真相を語ろうとしませんでした。 40 そこでサウルが、「ヨナタンと私はこちらに、おまえたちはみなあちらに、両側に分かれて立ってみよう」と提案し、一同はそれに応じました。
41 サウルは祈りました。「ああ、イスラエルの神、主よ。なぜ、私の問いにお答えいただけなかったのでしょう。何か責められるべき点があるのでしょうか。ヨナタンか私に罪があるのですか。それとも、ほかの者が悪いのですか。主よ、罪を犯したのはだれかはっきりお示しください。」
それから聖なるくじを引くと、ヨナタンとサウルの側に当たりました。 42 サウルは続けて、「私とヨナタンとでくじを引こう」と言いました。その結果、くじはヨナタンに当たりました。
43 サウルはヨナタンに詰め寄りました。「何をしたのか、私に言いなさい。」
「みつをなめたのです。杖の先につけて、ほんの少しばかり。でも、私は死ななければなりません。」
44 「そうだ、ヨナタン。おまえは死ななければならない。もしそうでなければ、神が私を死ぬほどに罰してくださるように。」
45 すると、兵士たちが反発しました。「今日イスラエルを救ったのはヨナタン様です。その方のいのちが奪われるなんて、あってはなりません！ 主にかけて誓います。あの方の髪の毛一本も失われてはなりません。今日の目ざましい働きは、神様に用いられている証拠ではありませんか。」
こうして、彼らはヨナタンを救ったのです。 46 そののち、サウルは追撃していた部隊を呼び戻したので、ペリシテ人は引き揚げて行きました。
47 サウルはイスラエルの王位についてからこのかた、周囲のあらゆる敵、モアブ、アモン人、エドム、ツォバの王たちからペリシテ人に至るまで、派兵して戦っていました。そして、向かうところどこでも勝利を収めました。 48 彼は大きな力を振るい、アマレク人を討ちました。サウルのおかげで、イスラエルはすべての侵略者の手から救われました。
49 さて、サウルには、ヨナタン、イシュビ、マルキ・シュアという三人の息子と、メラブ、ミカルという二人の娘がいました。 50-51 妻はアヒノアムといい、アヒマアツの娘でした。軍の司令官はサウルのおじネルの息子で、いとこに当たるアブネルでした。アブネルの父ネルとサウルの父キシュとは兄弟で、二人ともアビエルの子です。
52 イスラエル人はサウルの在世中、絶えずペリシテ人と戦い続けました。サウルは勇敢で屈強な若者を見つけると、彼らをみな軍隊に徴用しました。

14 1 One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.
2 Saul was staying(A) on the outskirts of Gibeah(B) under a pomegranate tree(C) in Migron.(D) With him were about six hundred men, 3 among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s(E) brother Ahitub(F) son of Phinehas, the son of Eli,(G) the Lord’s priest in Shiloh.(H) No one was aware that Jonathan had left.
4 On each side of the pass(I) that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. 5 One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba.(J)
6 Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised(K) men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing(L) can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many(M) or by few.(N)”
7 “Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
8 Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. 9 If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. 10 But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign(O) that the Lord has given them into our hands.(P)”
11 So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. “Look!” said the Philistines. “The Hebrews(Q) are crawling out of the holes they were hiding(R) in.” 12 The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.(S)”
So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand(T) of Israel.”
13 Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. 14 In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.
Israel Routs the Philistines
15 Then panic(U) struck the whole army—those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding(V) parties—and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.[a]
16 Saul’s lookouts(W) at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions. 17 Then Saul said to the men who were with him, “Muster the forces and see who has left us.” When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there.
18 Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring(X) the ark(Y) of God.” (At that time it was with the Israelites.)[b] 19 While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest,(Z) “Withdraw your hand.”
20 Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking(AA) each other with their swords. 21 Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went(AB) over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 When all the Israelites who had hidden(AC) in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit. 23 So on that day the Lord saved(AD) Israel, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.(AE)
Jonathan Eats Honey
24 Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath,(AF) saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.
25 The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground. 26 When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb.(AG) He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.[c] 28 Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, ‘Cursed be anyone who eats food today!’ That is why the men are faint.”
29 Jonathan said, “My father has made trouble(AH) for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?”
31 That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Mikmash(AI) to Aijalon,(AJ) they were exhausted. 32 They pounced on the plunder(AK) and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood.(AL) 33 Then someone said to Saul, “Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat that has blood(AM) in it.”
“You have broken faith,” he said. “Roll a large stone over here at once.” 34 Then he said, “Go out among the men and tell them, ‘Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the Lord by eating meat with blood still(AN) in it.’”
So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there. 35 Then Saul built an altar(AO) to the Lord; it was the first time he had done this.
36 Saul said, “Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive.”
“Do whatever seems best to you,” they replied.
But the priest said, “Let us inquire(AP) of God here.”
37 So Saul asked God, “Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?” But God did not answer(AQ) him that day.
38 Saul therefore said, “Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed(AR) today. 39 As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives,(AS) even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan,(AT) he must die.”(AU) But not one of them said a word.
40 Saul then said to all the Israelites, “You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here.”
“Do what seems best to you,” they replied.
41 Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault,[d] respond with Thummim.” Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared. 42 Saul said, “Cast the lot(AV) between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.
43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.”(AW)
So Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey(AX) with the end of my staff. And now I must die!”
44 Saul said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AY) if you do not die, Jonathan.(AZ)”
45 But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair(BA) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued(BB) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.
46 Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.
47 After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab,(BC) the Ammonites,(BD) Edom,(BE) the kings[e] of Zobah,(BF) and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.[f] 48 He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites,(BG) delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.
Saul’s Family
49 Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua.(BH) The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal.(BI) 50 His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner(BJ) son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle.(BK) 51 Saul’s father Kish(BL) and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.
52 All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took(BM) him into his service.

ユダの子孫（その2）
4 ユダの子孫はペレツ、ヘツロン、カルミ、フル、ショバル。
2 ショバルの子レアヤはヤハテの父。ヤハテは、ツォルア人の諸氏族となったアフマイとラハデの先祖。
3-4 エタムの子孫は次のとおり。イズレエル、イシュマ、イデバシュ、娘のハツェレルポニ、ゲドルの先祖ペヌエル、フシャの先祖エゼル。以上が、ベツレヘムの父で、エフラテの長男に当たるフルの子です。
5 テコアの父アシュフルには、ヘルアとナアラという二人の妻がいました。
6 ナアラはアフザム、ヘフェル、テメニ、アハシュタリを産み、 7 ヘルアはツェレテ、ツォハル、エテナンを産みました。
8 コツはアヌブとツォベバの父で、ハルムの子アハルヘルの名で呼ばれた氏族の先祖です。
9 ヤベツは兄弟の中で最も重んじられていました。母が彼をヤベツ（「苦しみ」の意）と名づけたのは、出産の時にたいへんな苦しみを味わったからです。
10 ヤベツはイスラエルの神に祈りました。「どうか、私を大いに祝福し、私の働きを助けてください。私が行うすべてのことに御手を添えてください。すべての悪と災いからお守りください。」神はその願いをかなえてくださいました。

14 メオノタイはオフラの父。
セラヤは、多くの職人が住んでいたので「職人の谷」と呼ばれた谷の住人の先祖ヨアブの父。
15 エフネの子カレブの子はイル、エラ、ナアム。
エラの子の一人はケナズ。
16 エハレルエルの子はジフ、ジファ、ティルヤ、アサルエル。

19 ホディヤの妻はナハムの姉妹で、生まれた子の一人はガルミ人ケイラの父となり、もう一人はマアカ人エシュテモアの父となりました。
20 シモンの子はアムノン、リナ、ベン・ハナン、ティロン。
イシュイの子はゾヘテ、ベン・ゾヘテ。
21-22 ユダの子シェラの子孫は次のとおり。
レカの父エル、マレシャの父ラダ、ベテ・アシュベアで亜麻布業を営む氏族、ヨキム、コゼバの氏族、ヨアシュ。ラヘムに帰るまでモアブの支配者であったサラフ。これらの名は古くから記録にとどめられていました。
23 これらの氏族は陶芸、庭園、植林の技術にすぐれ、王のために働きました。
24 シメオンの子はネムエル、ヤミン、ヤリブ、ゼラフ、サウル。
25 サウルの子はシャルム、孫はミブサム、曾孫はミシュマ。
26 ミシュマの子の一人が、ザクルの父で、シムイの祖父に当たるハムエル。
27 シムイには十六人の息子と六人の娘がいました。ところが、シムイの兄弟たちには、ユダの普通の家族に比べて子どもが少なかったのです。
28 彼らは、ベエル・シェバ、モラダ、ハツァル・シュアル、 29 ビルハ、エツェム、トラデ、 30 ベトエル、ホルマ、ツィケラグ、 31 ベテ・マルカボテ、ハツァル・スシム、ベテ・ビルイ、シャアライムに住んでいました。これらの町は、ダビデの時代になるまで、彼らの支配下にあったのです。
32-33 彼らの子孫は、エタム、アイン、リモン、トケン、アシャンおよびその周辺に住んでいました。中には、バアルのような遠方に住んでいた者もいます。これらのことは、系図に記録されています。
34-39 次に挙げるのは、家畜の群れを飼う牧場を捜し求めてゲドルの谷の東側まで旅をした、富める氏族の長です。
メショバブ、ヤムレク、ヨシャ、ヨエル、エフー、エルヨエナイ、ヤアコバ、エショハヤ、アサヤ、アディエル、エシミエル、ベナヤ、シフイの子ジザ。シフイから順次さかのぼると、アロン、エダヤ、シムリ、シェマヤに至ります。
40-41 彼らは、静かで平和そのものの良い牧場を見つけました。しかし、その地はハムの子孫のものでした。ユダ王朝のヒゼキヤ王の時、これらの氏族の長がこの地を襲って、ハムの子孫の天幕（テント）と家を破壊し、住民を殺してそこを奪ったのです。
42 後日、このシメオン族から出た侵略者たちのうち五百人は、イシュイの子のペラテヤ、ネアルヤ、レファヤ、ウジエルたちを指導者として立てセイルの山地に向かいました。 43 彼らはそこで、アマレク人の残党を打ち、そこに住みついたのです。

4 The descendants of Judah:(A)
Perez, Hezron,(B) Karmi, Hur and Shobal.
2 Reaiah son of Shobal was the father of Jahath, and Jahath the father of Ahumai and Lahad. These were the clans of the Zorathites.
3 These were the sons[a] of Etam:
Jezreel, Ishma and Idbash. Their sister was named Hazzelelponi. 4 Penuel was the father of Gedor, and Ezer the father of Hushah.
These were the descendants of Hur,(C) the firstborn of Ephrathah and father[b] of Bethlehem.(D)
5 Ashhur(E) the father of Tekoa had two wives, Helah and Naarah.
6 Naarah bore him Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni and Haahashtari. These were the descendants of Naarah.
7 The sons of Helah:
Zereth, Zohar, Ethnan, 8 and Koz, who was the father of Anub and Hazzobebah and of the clans of Aharhel son of Harum.
9 Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez,[c] saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.” 10 Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.
11 Kelub, Shuhah’s brother, was the father of Mehir, who was the father of Eshton. 12 Eshton was the father of Beth Rapha, Paseah and Tehinnah the father of Ir Nahash.[d] These were the men of Rekah.
13 The sons of Kenaz:
Othniel(F) and Seraiah.
The sons of Othniel:
Hathath and Meonothai.[e] 14 Meonothai was the father of Ophrah.
Seraiah was the father of Joab,
the father of Ge Harashim.[f] It was called this because its people were skilled workers.
15 The sons of Caleb son of Jephunneh:
Iru, Elah and Naam.
The son of Elah:
Kenaz.
16 The sons of Jehallelel:
Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria and Asarel.
17 The sons of Ezrah:
Jether, Mered, Epher and Jalon. One of Mered’s wives gave birth to Miriam,(G) Shammai and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa. 18 (His wife from the tribe of Judah gave birth to Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soko, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah.(H)) These were the children of Pharaoh’s daughter Bithiah, whom Mered had married.
19 The sons of Hodiah’s wife, the sister of Naham:
the father of Keilah(I) the Garmite, and Eshtemoa the Maakathite.(J)
20 The sons of Shimon:
Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-Hanan and Tilon.
The descendants of Ishi:

21 The sons of Shelah(K) son of Judah:
Er the father of Lekah, Laadah the father of Mareshah and the clans of the linen workers at Beth Ashbea, 22 Jokim, the men of Kozeba, and Joash and Saraph, who ruled in Moab and Jashubi Lehem. (These records are from ancient times.) 23 They were the potters who lived at Netaim and Gederah; they stayed there and worked for the king.

24 The descendants of Simeon:(M)
Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib,(N) Zerah and Shaul;
25 Shallum was Shaul’s son, Mibsam his son and Mishma his son.
26 The descendants of Mishma:
Hammuel his son, Zakkur his son and Shimei his son.
27 Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many children; so their entire clan did not become as numerous as the people of Judah. 28 They lived in Beersheba,(O) Moladah,(P) Hazar Shual, 29 Bilhah, Ezem,(Q) Tolad, 30 Bethuel, Hormah,(R) Ziklag,(S) 31 Beth Markaboth, Hazar Susim, Beth Biri and Shaaraim.(T) These were their towns until the reign of David. 32 Their surrounding villages were Etam, Ain,(U) Rimmon, Token and Ashan(V)—five towns— 33 and all the villages around these towns as far as Baalath.[g] These were their settlements. And they kept a genealogical record.
34 Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah son of Amaziah, 35 Joel, Jehu son of Joshibiah, the son of Seraiah, the son of Asiel, 36 also Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah, 37 and Ziza son of Shiphi, the son of Allon, the son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri, the son of Shemaiah.
38 The men listed above by name were leaders of their clans. Their families increased greatly, 39 and they went to the outskirts of Gedor(W) to the east of the valley in search of pasture for their flocks. 40 They found rich, good pasture, and the land was spacious, peaceful and quiet.(X) Some Hamites had lived there formerly.
41 The men whose names were listed came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites in their dwellings and also the Meunites(Y) who were there and completely destroyed[h] them, as is evident to this day. Then they settled in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks. 42 And five hundred of these Simeonites, led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, invaded the hill country of Seir.(Z) 43 They killed the remaining Amalekites(AA) who had escaped, and they have lived there to this day.

13 あなたがたのところへ行こうとするのは、これで三度目です。聖書には、「二人か三人に目撃された犯罪は罰せられなければならない」（申命19・15）とあります。 2 私は、前回の滞在中、前から罪を犯していた人たちにすでに警告しておいたはずですが、今また、彼らだけでなく、あなたがた全員に警告します。次に会ったら、きびしく罰するつもりです。手かげんはしません。 3 あなたがたは、キリストがほんとうに私を通して語っておられるかどうか知りたいのでしょうから、その証拠を示します。キリストは、あなたがたに弱い態度をとられるのではなく、あなたがたの内部で強大な力を発揮なさいます。 4 キリストの、人間としての弱い体は十字架上で死にました。しかし今、キリストは、神の偉大な力を受けて生きておられます。私たちもキリスト同様、肉体的には弱い者でしたが、今は、キリストに似て、強くされた者となっています。そして、あなたがたに対処するに十分な神の力をいただいているのです。

5 よくよく自分を吟味しなさい。ほんとうにクリスチャンだと言えますか。クリスチャンとしてのテストに合格していますか。自分の内に住まれるキリストと、そのあふれる力とを、いよいよ強く実感していますか。 6 私たちはこのテストに合格し、確実に主のものとなっています。このことを、あなたがたに認めてほしいのです。 7 あなたがたが正しい生活をするように祈っています。それは、私たちの教えの正しさが証明され、面目を施したいからではありません。たとえ私たちは軽蔑されようとも、あなたがたには正しい行いをしてもらいたいからです。 8 私たちの務めは、いついかなる時にも、正しいことを勧めることであって、悪を望むことではありません。 9 自分たちは弱く軽蔑されても、あなたがたがほんとうに強くなってくれればうれしいのです。最大の願いと祈りは、あなたがたが霊的に整えられた者になってくれることです。 10 そちらに行って、しかったり罰したりしないですむようにと願いつつ、今この手紙を書いています。私に託されている主の権威を、あなたがたを罰するためにではなく、強くするために使いたいからです。

Final Warnings
13 This will be my third visit to you.(A) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[a](B) 2 I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(C) On my return I will not spare(D) those who sinned earlier(E) or any of the others, 3 since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(F) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. 4 For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(G) yet he lives by God’s power.(H) Likewise, we are weak(I) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(J) in our dealing with you.
5 Examine yourselves(K) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(L) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(M)—unless, of course, you fail the test? 6 And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. 7 Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. 8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 9 We are glad whenever we are weak(N) but you are strong;(O) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(P) 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh(Q) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.(R)
