大干ばつを告げる預言者エリヤ
17 ギルアデのティシュベ出身の預言者エリヤは、アハブ王にこう宣告しました。「私がお仕えしているイスラエルの神、主は、確かに生きておられる。私が告げるまで、数年の間、一滴の雨も降らず、露も降りないだろう。」
2 このあと、主はエリヤに言いました。 3 「ここを去って東に向かい、ヨルダン川の東に合流する、ケリテ川のほとりに隠れなさい。 4 その川の水を飲み、からすが運んで来るものを食べるのだ。食べ物を運ぶよう、からすに命じておいたから。」
5 エリヤは主が言ったとおりに行い、ケリテ川のほとりに住みました。 6 毎日、朝と夕方の二回、からすがパンと肉を運んで来るようになり、彼はまた、その川の水を飲みました。 7 ところが、この地方のどこにも雨が降らなかったので、しばらくすると川がかれてしまいました。
エリヤとツァレファテの未亡人
8-9 その時、主のことばがありました。「シドンの町に近いツァレファテ村へ行き、そこに住みなさい。その村には、あなたを養ってくれる未亡人がいる。彼女にはわたしが指示を与えておいた。」
10 エリヤが言われるままにツァレファテに行くと、村の入口でたきぎを拾い集めている未亡人に会ったので、水を一杯求めました。 11 彼女が水をくみに行こうとすると、エリヤは呼び止めて、「それから、パンも少し下さい」と言いました。 12 すると彼女は答えました。「あなたの神、主にお誓いして申します。家には一切れのパンもありません。つぼの底に粉がほんの少しと、ほかにわずかばかりの油が残っているだけです。実は、それで最後の食事を作るため、たきぎを集めていたところなのです。それを食べてしまったら、息子と二人、飢えて死ぬのを待つだけです。」
13 「心配することはありません。さあ、行って、最後の食事を作りなさい。ただし、まず、私のために小さなパンを焼いてください。そうしたあとも、あなたと息子さんのために十分なパンが焼けるはずです。 14 イスラエルの神、主が、『わたしが雨を降らして、再び作物を実らせる時まで、それらのつぼからは粉も油もなくならない』と約束しておられます。」
15 そこで彼女は、言われたとおりにしました。と、どうでしょう。彼女と彼女の息子とエリヤは、いつまでも粉と油で作ったパンを食べることができたのです。 16 どんなにたくさん使っても、主の約束どおり、それぞれのつぼにはいつも口まで粉と油が詰まっていました。
17 ところがある日、彼女の息子が病気になって死んでしまったのです。 18 彼女は、「ああ、神の人よ、なんということをしてくださったのですか。あなたは息子を殺して、私の罪を罰するために来られたのですか」と叫びました。 19 エリヤは、「息子さんを私に渡しなさい」と言うと、子どもをかかえて、彼の居間になっている階上の部屋に上がり、ベッドに横たえました。 20 それから、主に祈りました。「ああ、神様。なぜ、私の世話をしてくれた人の子どもを死なせたのですか。」 21 そして三度、子どもの上に身を伏せて、「ああ主よ。どうか、この子を生き返らせてください」と大声で祈りました。
22 主はエリヤの祈りをお聞きになったので、子どもは生き返りました。 23 エリヤはその子をかかえて階下に降り、母親に渡しました。「ごらんなさい。息子さんは生き返りました」と言うエリヤの顔は、喜びに輝いていました。 24 その女は、エリヤにこう告白しました。「今私は、あなたが預言者であり、あなたのおっしゃることはみな主のおことばであることが、ほんとうにわかりました。」
エリヤとバアルの預言者の対決
18 それから三年後、主はエリヤに、「アハブ王に会って、『やがて雨を降らせる』と伝えよ」と言いました。 2 そのころ、サマリヤはひどいききんに見舞われていたのです。そこでエリヤは、アハブのもとに向かいました。
3-4 アハブの宮殿の管理を任せられていた、心から神を畏れ敬うオバデヤという人がいました。かつて王妃イゼベルが、預言者を一人残らず殺そうとした時、オバデヤは百人の預言者を助け、五十人ずつほら穴にかくまい、パンと水で養ったことがありました。
5 エリヤがアハブ王に会おうと道を急いでいる時、王はオバデヤに命じました。「国中の川を調べてみよう。私の馬やらばの食糧になる草があるかどうか。私はこちらへ行くから、おまえは向こうを捜すのだ。」
6 こうして、二人は別々の道を進みました。 7 その時オバデヤは、近づいて来るエリヤを見たのです。ひと目でエリヤだとわかったので、彼は地面にひれ伏しました。「エリヤ先生ですね？」
8 「そうだ。王のところへ行って、私がここにいると伝えてくれないか。」
9 「エリヤ先生。私がどんな悪いことをしたというので、この私を殺そうとなさるのですか。 10 王様は、世界中の国をすみずみまで捜し回って、あなたを見つけ出そうとしています。『エリヤは当地にはいない』という報告を受けると、王様は決まってその国の王に、それが真実であると誓わせるのです。 11 ところが、今あなたは、『王のところへ行って、エリヤがここにいると伝えよ』とおっしゃいます。 12 しかし、私があなたから離れたら、すぐ神の霊がだれも知らないところにあなたを連れ去ってしまうでしょう。王様が来てあなたを見つけることができなかったら、私は間違いなく殺されます。私はこれまでずっと、心からイスラエルの主にお仕えしてきました。 13 イゼベル王妃が主の預言者を殺そうとした時、預言者百人を二つのほら穴にかくまい、パンと水を差し上げた私のことはお耳に入りませんでしたか。 14 おっしゃるとおりにしたら、私は殺されます。」
15 「私は、いつも私が立っている、天の軍勢の主である神の前に誓う。今日、私は必ずアハブ王の前に出るだろう。」
16 そこでオバデヤは、王のところへ行って、エリヤが来たことを知らせました。アハブ王はエリヤに会いに出て来ました。
17 王は、エリヤを見るなり言いました。「おまえだな。イスラエルに災難をもたらした張本人は。」
18 エリヤは答えました。「災難の張本人はあなたのほうです。あなたもあなたのご一族も、主を捨ててバアルを拝んでいるではありませんか。 19 さあ、イスラエルの民と、イゼベル王妃おかかえのバアルの預言者四百五十人、それにアシェラの預言者四百人をカルメル山に集めてください。」
20 そこでアハブは、民と預言者をカルメル山に召集しました。
21 エリヤは民に、こう語りかけました。「いつまで迷っているのか。イスラエルの主がほんとうの神なら、主に従いなさい。もしバアルが神であれば、バアルに従いなさい。」
22 エリヤは、さらに続けました。「私はただ一人の神の預言者である。ところが、バアルの預言者は四百五十人もいる。 23 さあ、二頭の若い雄牛を引っ張って来なさい。バアルの預言者は、どちらでも好きなほうを選び、切り裂いて、自分たちの祭壇のたきぎの上に載せるがいい。ただし、火はつけてはならない。私も残ったほうの雄牛を同じようにして、主の祭壇のたきぎの上に載せ、火をつけないでおく。 24 それから、あなたたちは自分たちの神に祈れ。私も私の主に祈ろう。祈りに答えて天から火を降らせ、たきぎを燃やしてくださる神こそ、ほんとうの神様である！」民はみな、この提案に賛成しました。
25 エリヤはバアルの預言者に言いました。「あなたたちのほうが大ぜいだから、そっちから始めてほしい。雄牛を一頭いけにえとしてささげ、自分たちの神に祈るのだ。ただし、たきぎに火をつけてはならない。」
26 そこで彼らは、いけにえにする若い雄牛を祭壇に載せ、午前中いっぱい、「ああ、バアル様、私たちの祈りに答えてください！」と叫び続けました。しかし、何の答えもありません。ついには祭壇の回りで踊りだしました。 27 正午になろうかというころ、エリヤは彼らをあざけって言いました。「もっと大声で叫べ！ そんな声では、おまえたちの神には聞こえない。だれかと話し中かもしれないし、取り込み中か、あるいは旅に出ているかもしれない。それとも、ぐっすり寝こんでいて、起こしてやる必要があるかもしれない。」
28 それで彼らはますます大声を張り上げ、いつものように、ナイフや剣で自分の体を傷つけたので、血がたらたらと流れ出ました。 29 こうして騒ぎ立てているうちに、夕方のささげ物をする時が近づきました。しかし、依然として何の答えもありません。
30 この時とばかり、エリヤは人々に、「ここに集まれ！」と叫びました。人々が彼の回りに集まると、エリヤは壊れていた主の祭壇を築き直し始めました。 31 イスラエルの十二部族を示す十二個の石を取り、 32 それで祭壇を築いたあと、周囲に幅一メートルほどの溝を掘りました。 33 次に、彼は祭壇にたきぎを並べ、残った一頭の若い雄牛を切り裂いて、たきぎの上に載せました。それから人々に命じました。「四つのかめを水でいっぱいにし、その水をいけにえの雄牛とたきぎにかけなさい。」人々がそうすると、 34 「もう一度かけなさい」と命じ、また言われたようにすると、「さらに、もう一度かけなさい」と命じました。人々は、同じことを三度くり返しました。 35 祭壇から流れ落ちた水は、溝いっぱいにあふれました。
36 夕方のささげ物をささげる時刻に、エリヤは祭壇に歩み寄り、祈りました。「アブラハム、イサク、イスラエル（ヤコブ）の主よ。あなたこそイスラエルの神です。私があなたのしもべであることを、今日こそはっきり証明してください。私がこのようにしたのは、あなたのご命令によるということを、人々にわからせてください。 37 主よ、私の祈りに答えてください！ ここにいる民が、あなたこそ神であり、あなたが彼らをご自分のもとへ立ち返らせてくださることを知るように、どうか、私の祈りを聞き届けてください！」
38 すると、突然、火のかたまりが天から降って来て、いけにえの若い雄牛、たきぎ、石、ちりを焼き尽くし、溝にたまった水をすっかり蒸発させてしまったのです。 39 それを見た民は、その場にひれ伏し、「主こそ神だ！ 主こそ神だ！」と叫びました。 40 そこでエリヤは彼らに、「バアルの預言者を一人残らず捕らえよ」と命じました。エリヤは、捕らえられたバアルの預言者をキション川へ連れて行き、そこで殺しました。
41 それがすむと、エリヤはアハブに、「激しい大雨の音が聞こえる。急いで宿舎へ帰り、食事をしなさい」と言いました。 42 そこで王は、宴会の用意をしました。一方エリヤは、カルメル山の頂に登ってひざまずき、顔をひざの間にうずめ、 43 従者に、「さあ、海の方を見て来てくれ」と頼みました。従者は戻って来て、「何も見えません」と報告しました。「もう一度、行ってくれ。同じことを七回くり返しなさい。」 44 七度目に、とうとう従者は叫びました。「手のひらほどの小さな雲が、水平線から上って来ます！」
「そうか。よし、急いで王のところへ行き、車で山を下るように伝えなさい。うかうかしていると、雨で身動きできなくなると。」
45 このことばのとおり、しばらくすると強い風が嵐を運んで来て、空は真っ暗になり、激しい大雨が降ってきました。アハブは大急ぎでイズレエルへ向かいました。 46 主から特別な力を与えられたエリヤは、驚いたことに、王の車を追い越して、町の入口まで走り通しました。
逃げ出したエリヤ
19 アハブ王は、エリヤがしたすべてのこと、とりわけバアルの預言者たちを皆殺しにしたことを、王妃イゼベルに話しました。 2 王妃は腹立ちまぎれに、使者を送ってエリヤにこう伝えました。「よくも私の預言者たちを殺してくれた。神々にかけて言っておくけど、明日の今ごろまでに、おまえのいのちはないものと覚悟するがいい！」
3 エリヤは恐怖に襲われ、逃げ出しました。ユダの町ベエル・シェバまで来ると、そこに従者を残し、 4 一人で荒野へ入って行きました。彼は一日中歩き続けてくたくたになり、えにしだの木の下に座り込むと、死を願って主に祈りました。「主よ、もうたくさんです。私のいのちを取ってください。いずれ死ぬのですから。」
5 そのまま木の下で横になって眠り込むと、御使いが来て彼にさわり、起きて食事をするように言いました。 6 見ると、石で焼いたパンと水の入ったつぼがあります。エリヤはパンを食べ、水を飲んでから、また横になりました。 7 すると、再び御使いが現れて彼にさわり、「起きて、もっと食べなさい。先はまだまだ長いのだから」と言いました。
8 そこでエリヤは起きて食べ、水を飲みました。この食事で元気を取り戻したエリヤは、四十日四十夜、旅を続けて神の山ホレブ（シナイ山）に着き、 9 そこにあるほら穴に入りました。すると、彼に主のことばがありました。「エリヤ、ここで何をしているのか。」
10 「私は、天地の支配者である神、主のために一生懸命に働いてきました。ところが、イスラエルの民はあなたと交わした契約を破って祭壇を壊し、あなたの預言者たちを殺しました。彼らは今、一人生き残った私まで殺そうとしています。」
11 すると、「外に出て、山の上でわたしの前に立ちなさい」と主のことばがありました。と、その時、主が通り過ぎ、激しい風が山を直撃し、岩が砕け落ちました。しかし、風の中に主はいませんでした。風のあとに地震が起こりましたが、そこにも主はいませんでした。 12 地震のあとに火が燃えましたが、火の中にも主はいませんでした。火のあとに、ささやくような細い声が聞こえてきました。 13 エリヤはそれを聞くと、顔を外套で覆い、ほら穴の入口に立ちました。すると、「エリヤ、なぜ、ここにいるのか」という声がありました。
14 「私は天の軍勢の主である神様のために、骨身を惜しまず働いてきました。それなのに、人々は契約を破って祭壇を壊し、私以外のあなたの預言者を一人残らず殺しました。そして今、私まで殺そうとしています。」
15 「さあ、ダマスコに通じる荒野の道へ引き返すのだ。ダマスコに着いたら、ハザエルに油を注いで、シリヤの王としなさい。 16 それから、ニムシの子エフーに油を注いで、イスラエルの王としなさい。また、アベル・メホラ出身のシャファテの子エリシャに油を注いで、あなたに代わる預言者としなさい。 17 ハザエルの手から逃げる者はエフーに殺され、エフーの手から逃げる者はエリシャに殺される。 18 それにイスラエルには、バアルにひざをかがめず、口づけしない者が七千人いることを忘れてはならない。」
後継者エリシャ
19 エリヤは出かけて行き、十二くびき（牛馬の首にかけて車を引かせる横木。一くびきは二頭）の牛で畑を耕しているエリシャを見つけました。彼は最後の十二番目のくびきのそばにいました。エリヤは彼に近寄り、自分の外套を彼の肩にかけると、また歩き去りました。 20 すると、エリシャは牛をそのままにして、エリヤのあとを追いかけ、「まず、父と母に別れのあいさつをさせてください。それから、お伴をします」と言いました。「行って来なさい。なぜ、そんなに興奮しているのです」とエリヤは答えました。 21 こう言われてエリシャは引き返し、耕作用の牛をほふり、鋤の柄をたきぎにして肉をあぶりました。その料理を人々にふるまって、祝宴を設けました。それからエリヤについて行って、彼に仕えました。

Elijah Announces a Great Drought
17 Now Elijah(A) the Tishbite, from Tishbe[a] in Gilead,(B) said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain(C) in the next few years except at my word.”
Elijah Fed by Ravens
2 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 3 “Leave here, turn eastward and hide(D) in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens(E) to supply you with food there.”
5 So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning(F) and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.
Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath
7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9 “Go at once to Zarephath(G) in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow(H) there to supply you with food.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”(I) 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”
12 “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil(J) in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain(K) on the land.’”
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin(L) and kill my son?”
19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 Then he cried(M) out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” 21 Then he stretched(N) himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”
22 The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother(O) and said, “Look, your son is alive!”
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know(P) that you are a man of God(Q) and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”(R)
Elijah and Obadiah
18 After a long time, in the third(S) year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present(T) yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain(U) on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe(V) in Samaria, 3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator.(W) (Obadiah was a devout believer(X) in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel(Y) was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden(Z) them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied(AA) them with food and water.) 5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs(AB) and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”(AC) 6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized(AD) him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look(AE) for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12 I don’t know where the Spirit(AF) of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth. 13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15 Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present(AG) myself to Ahab today.”
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler(AH) of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you(AI) and your father’s family have. You have abandoned(AJ) the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon(AK) the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel.(AL) And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”(AM)
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(AN) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(AO) between two opinions? If the Lord(AP) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(AQ) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(AR) 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call(AS) on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.(AT) The god who answers by fire(AU)—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called(AV) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(AW) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(AX) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(AY) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(AZ) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(BA)
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar(BB) of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”(BC) 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name(BD) of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[b] of seed. 33 He arranged(BE) the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36 At the time(BF) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,(BG) Isaac and Israel, let it be known(BH) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.(BI) 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know(BJ) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire(BK) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate(BL) and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”(BM)
40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley(BN) and slaughtered(BO) there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.(BP)
43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 The seventh time(BQ) the servant reported, “A cloud(BR) as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain(BS) started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.(BT) 46 The power(BU) of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt,(BV) he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
Elijah Flees to Horeb
19 Now Ahab told Jezebel(BW) everything Elijah had done and how he had killed(BX) all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,(BY) if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”(BZ)
3 Elijah was afraid[c] and ran(CA) for his life.(CB) When he came to Beersheba(CC) in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush,(CD) sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life;(CE) I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.(CF)
All at once an angel(CG) touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty(CH) days and forty nights until he reached Horeb,(CI) the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave(CJ) and spent the night.
The Lord Appears to Elijah
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”(CK)
10 He replied, “I have been very zealous(CL) for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant,(CM) torn down your altars,(CN) and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(CO) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain(CP) in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”(CQ)
Then a great and powerful wind(CR) tore the mountains apart and shattered(CS) the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire,(CT) but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.(CU) 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face(CV) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(CW) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael(CX) king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint(CY) Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha(CZ) son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah(DA) to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael,(DB) and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.(DC) 18 Yet I reserve(DD) seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed(DE) him.”
The Call of Elisha
19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak(DF) around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,”(DG) he said, “and then I will come with you.”
“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”
21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen(DH) and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.(DI)

16 そういうわけですから、食べ物や飲み物のことで、あるいはユダヤ教の祭り、新月の儀式、安息日の決まりを守らないなどという問題で、だれにも批評させてはいけません。 17 それらは、キリストが来られる前にだけ有効であった、一時的な存在にすぎないからです。つまり、キリストという本体の影でしかなかったのです。
18 天使への礼拝を拒否する時、「今に罰があたるぞ」などと相手に言わせてはなりません。彼らは、幻を見たと言って、正当性を主張します。この、謙遜だと自任しているが高慢な人々は、実に想像をたくましくしますが、 19 彼らはキリストにつながっていません。しかし、キリストの体を構成する私たちは、キリストをかしらとして結びついています。私たちは、関節と筋肉によって互いにしっかり結び合わされ、神から養分と力とをいただいて成長するのです。
20-21 キリストと共に死んだあなたがたは、この世の教えから解放されたのです。それならなぜ、「あれは食べるな、なめるな、さわってもいけない」などという規則に縛られ、この世の考えに従う生活を続けているのですか。 22 それらはすべて消えてなくなるもので、人間の作った規則にすぎません。食物は食べるためにあり、食べればなくなります。 23 このような規則は、自分を規制するきびしい礼拝とか、謙遜とか、肉体の苦行などを伴うので、いかにもすぐれたもののように思われがちですが、それによって、人の心に忍び込む、悪い思いや欲望に打ち勝つことはできないのです。それは、その人を高慢にするだけです。

2 I want you to know how hard I am contending(A) for you and for those at Laodicea,(B) and for all who have not met me personally. 2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart(C) and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery(D) of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.(E) 4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.(F) 5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit(G) and delight to see how disciplined(H) you are and how firm(I) your faith in Christ(J) is.
Spiritual Fullness in Christ
6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord,(K) continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted(L) and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught,(M) and overflowing with thankfulness.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,(N) which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world(O) rather than on Christ.
9 For in Christ all the fullness(P) of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head(Q) over every power and authority.(R) 11 In him you were also circumcised(S) with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[b](T) was put off when you were circumcised by[c] Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism,(U) in which you were also raised with him(V) through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.(W)
13 When you were dead in your sins(X) and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[d] alive(Y) with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,(Z) 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,(AA) which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.(AB) 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities,(AC) he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them(AD) by the cross.[e]
Freedom From Human Rules
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you(AE) by what you eat or drink,(AF) or with regard to a religious festival,(AG) a New Moon celebration(AH) or a Sabbath day.(AI) 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come;(AJ) the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility(AK) and the worship of angels disqualify you.(AL) Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head,(AM) from whom the whole body,(AN) supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.(AO)
20 Since you died with Christ(AP) to the elemental spiritual forces of this world,(AQ) why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:(AR) 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish(AS) with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.(AT) 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility(AU) and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
