17 这 样 ， 从 亚 伯 拉 罕 到 大 卫 共 有 十 四 代 ； 从 大 卫 到 迁 至 巴 比 伦 的 时 候 也 有 十 四 代 ； 从 迁 至 巴 比 伦 的 时 候 到 基 督 又 有 十 四 代 。
18 耶 稣 基 督 降 生 的 事 记 在 下 面 ： 他 母 亲 马 利 亚 已 经 许 配 了 约 瑟 ， 还 没 有 迎 娶 ， 马 利 亚 就 从 圣 灵 怀 了 孕 。
19 他 丈 夫 约 瑟 是 个 义 人 ， 不 愿 意 明 明 的 羞 辱 他 ， 想 要 暗 暗 的 把 他 休 了 。
20 正 思 念 这 事 的 时 候 ， 有 主 的 使 者 向 他 梦 中 显 现 ， 说 ： 大 卫 的 子 孙 约 瑟 ， 不 要 怕 ！ 只 管 娶 过 你 的 妻 子 马 利 亚 来 ， 因 他 所 怀 的 孕 是 从 圣 灵 来 的 。
21 他 将 要 生 一 个 儿 子 ， 你 要 给 他 起 名 叫 耶 稣 ， 因 他 要 将 自 己 的 百 姓 从 罪 恶 里 救 出 来 。
22 这 一 切 的 事 成 就 是 要 应 验 主 藉 先 知 所 说 的 话 ，
23 说 ： 必 有 童 女 怀 孕 生 子 ； 人 要 称 他 的 名 为 以 马 内 利 。 （ 以 马 内 利 翻 出 来 就 是 神 与 我 们 同 在 。 ）
24 约 瑟 醒 了 ， 起 来 ， 就 遵 着 主 使 者 的 吩 咐 把 妻 子 娶 过 来 ；
25 只 是 没 有 和 他 同 房 ， 等 他 生 了 儿 子 （ 有 古 卷 ： 等 他 生 了 头 胎 的 儿 子 ） ， 就 给 他 起 名 叫 耶 稣 。
2 当 希 律 王 的 时 候 ， 耶 稣 生 在 犹 太 的 伯 利 恒 。 有 几 个 博 士 从 东 方 来 到 耶 路 撒 冷 ， 说 ：
2 那 生 下 来 作 犹 太 人 之 王 的 在 那 里 ？ 我 们 在 东 方 看 见 他 的 星 ， 特 来 拜 他 。
3 希 律 王 听 见 了 ， 就 心 里 不 安 ； 耶 路 撒 冷 合 城 的 人 也 都 不 安 。
4 他 就 召 齐 了 祭 司 长 和 民 间 的 文 士 ， 问 他 们 说 ： 基 督 当 生 在 何 处 ？
5 他 们 回 答 说 ： 在 犹 太 的 伯 利 恒 。 因 为 有 先 知 记 着 ， 说 ：
6 犹 大 地 的 伯 利 恒 阿 ， 你 在 犹 大 诸 城 中 并 不 是 最 小 的 ； 因 为 将 来 有 一 位 君 王 要 从 你 那 里 出 来 ， 牧 养 我 以 色 列 民 。
7 当 下 ， 希 律 暗 暗 的 召 了 博 士 来 ， 细 问 那 星 是 甚 麽 时 候 出 现 的 ，
8 就 差 他 们 往 伯 利 恒 去 ， 说 ： 你 们 去 仔 细 寻 访 那 小 孩 子 ， 寻 到 了 ， 就 来 报 信 ， 我 也 好 去 拜 他 。
9 他 们 听 见 王 的 话 就 去 了 。 在 东 方 所 看 见 的 那 星 忽 然 在 他 们 前 头 行 ， 直 行 到 小 孩 子 的 地 方 ， 就 在 上 头 停 住 了 。
10 他 们 看 见 那 星 ， 就 大 大 的 欢 喜 ；
11 进 了 房 子 ， 看 见 小 孩 子 和 他 母 亲 马 利 亚 ， 就 俯 伏 拜 那 小 孩 子 ， 揭 开 宝 盒 ， 拿 黄 金 、 乳 香 、 没 药 为 礼 物 献 给 他 。
12 博 士 因 为 在 梦 中 被 主 指 示 不 要 回 去 见 希 律 ， 就 从 别 的 路 回 本 地 去 了 。
13 他 们 去 後 ， 有 主 的 使 者 向 约 瑟 梦 中 显 现 ， 说 ： 起 来 ！ 带 着 小 孩 子 同 他 母 亲 逃 往 埃 及 ， 住 在 那 里 ， 等 我 吩 咐 你 ； 因 为 希 律 必 寻 找 小 孩 子 ， 要 除 灭 他 。
14 约 瑟 就 起 来 ， 夜 间 带 着 小 孩 子 和 他 母 亲 往 埃 及 去 ，
15 住 在 那 里 ， 直 到 希 律 死 了 。 这 是 要 应 验 主 藉 先 知 所 说 的 话 ， 说 ： 我 从 埃 及 召 出 我 的 儿 子 来 。
16 希 律 见 自 己 被 博 士 愚 弄 ， 就 大 大 发 怒 ， 差 人 将 伯 利 恒 城 里 并 四 境 所 有 的 男 孩 ， 照 着 他 向 博 士 仔 细 查 问 的 时 候 ， 凡 两 岁 以 里 的 ， 都 杀 尽 了 。
17 这 就 应 了 先 知 耶 利 米 的 话 ， 说 ：
18 在 拉 玛 听 见 号 啕 大 哭 的 声 音 ， 是 拉 结 哭 他 儿 女 ， 不 肯 受 安 慰 ， 因 为 他 们 都 不 在 了 。
19 希 律 死 了 以 後 ， 有 主 的 使 者 在 埃 及 向 约 瑟 梦 中 显 现 ， 说 ：
20 起 来 ！ 带 着 小 孩 子 和 他 母 亲 往 以 色 列 地 去 ， 因 为 要 害 小 孩 子 性 命 的 人 已 经 死 了 。
21 约 瑟 就 起 来 ， 把 小 孩 子 和 他 母 亲 带 到 以 色 列 地 去 ；
22 只 因 听 见 亚 基 老 接 着 他 父 亲 希 律 作 了 犹 太 王 ， 就 怕 往 那 里 去 ， 又 在 梦 中 被 主 指 示 ， 便 往 加 利 利 境 内 去 了 ，
23 到 了 一 座 城 ， 名 叫 拿 撒 勒 ， 就 住 在 那 里 。 这 是 要 应 验 先 知 所 说 ， 他 将 称 为 拿 撒 勒 人 的 话 了 。
3 那 时 ， 有 施 洗 的 约 翰 出 来 ， 在 犹 太 的 旷 野 传 道 ， 说 ：
2 天 国 近 了 ， 你 们 应 当 悔 改 ！
3 这 人 就 是 先 知 以 赛 亚 所 说 的 。 他 说 ： 在 旷 野 有 人 声 喊 着 说 ： 预 备 主 的 道 ， 修 直 他 的 路 ！
4 这 约 翰 身 穿 骆 驼 毛 的 衣 服 ， 腰 束 皮 带 ， 吃 的 是 蝗 虫 、 野 蜜 。
5 那 时 ， 耶 路 撒 冷 和 犹 太 全 地 ， 并 约 但 河 一 带 地 方 的 人 ， 都 出 去 到 约 翰 那 里 ，
6 承 认 他 们 的 罪 ， 在 约 但 河 里 受 他 的 洗 。
7 约 翰 看 见 许 多 法 利 赛 人 和 撒 都 该 人 也 来 受 洗 ， 就 对 他 们 说 ： 毒 蛇 的 种 类 ！ 谁 指 示 你 们 逃 避 将 来 的 忿 怒 呢 ？
8 你 们 要 结 出 果 子 来 ， 与 悔 改 的 心 相 称 。
9 不 要 自 己 心 里 说 ： 有 亚 伯 拉 罕 为 我 们 的 祖 宗 。 我 告 诉 你 们 ， 神 能 从 这 些 石 头 中 给 亚 伯 拉 罕 兴 起 子 孙 来 。
10 现 在 斧 子 已 经 放 在 树 根 上 ， 凡 不 结 好 果 子 的 树 就 砍 下 来 ， 丢 在 火 里 。
11 我 是 用 水 给 你 们 施 洗 ， 叫 你 们 悔 改 。 但 那 在 我 以 後 来 的 ， 能 力 比 我 更 大 ， 我 就 是 给 他 提 鞋 也 不 配 。 他 要 用 圣 灵 与 火 给 你 们 施 洗 。
12 他 手 里 拿 着 簸 箕 ， 要 扬 净 他 的 场 ， 把 麦 子 收 在 仓 里 ， 把 糠 用 不 灭 的 火 烧 尽 了 。
13 当 下 耶 稣 从 加 利 利 来 到 约 但 河 ， 见 了 约 翰 ， 要 受 他 的 洗 。
14 约 翰 想 要 拦 住 他 ， 说 ： 我 当 受 你 的 洗 ， 你 反 倒 上 我 这 里 来 麽 ？
15 耶 稣 回 答 说 ： 你 暂 且 许 我 ， 因 为 我 们 理 当 这 样 尽 诸 般 的 义 （ 或 作 ： 礼 ） 。 於 是 约 翰 许 了 他 。
16 耶 稣 受 了 洗 ， 随 即 从 水 里 上 来 。 天 忽 然 为 他 开 了 ， 他 就 看 见 神 的 灵 彷 佛 鸽 子 降 下 ， 落 在 他 身 上 。
17 从 天 上 有 声 音 说 ： 这 是 我 的 爱 子 ， 我 所 喜 悦 的 。
4 当 时 ， 耶 稣 被 圣 灵 引 到 旷 野 ， 受 魔 鬼 的 试 探 。
2 他 禁 食 四 十 昼 夜 ， 後 来 就 饿 了 。
3 那 试 探 人 的 进 前 来 ， 对 他 说 ： 你 若 是 神 的 儿 子 ， 可 以 吩 咐 这 些 石 头 变 成 食 物 。
4 耶 稣 却 回 答 说 ： 经 上 记 着 说 ： 人 活 着 ， 不 是 单 靠 食 物 ， 乃 是 靠 神 口 里 所 出 的 一 切 话 。
5 魔 鬼 就 带 他 进 了 圣 城 ， 叫 他 站 在 殿 顶 （ 顶 ： 原 文 是 翅 ） 上 ，
6 对 他 说 ： 你 若 是 神 的 儿 子 ， 可 以 跳 下 去 ， 因 为 经 上 记 着 说 ： 主 要 为 你 吩 咐 他 的 使 者 用 手 托 着 你 ， 免 得 你 的 脚 碰 在 石 头 上 。
7 耶 稣 对 他 说 ： 经 上 又 记 着 说 ： 不 可 试 探 主 ─ 你 的 神 。
8 魔 鬼 又 带 他 上 了 一 座 最 高 的 山 ， 将 世 上 的 万 国 与 万 国 的 荣 华 都 指 给 他 看 ，
9 对 他 说 ： 你 若 俯 伏 拜 我 ， 我 就 把 这 一 切 都 赐 给 你 。
10 耶 稣 说 ： 撒 但 （ 撒 但 就 是 抵 挡 的 意 思 ， 乃 魔 鬼 的 别 名 ） ， 退 去 罢 ！ 因 为 经 上 记 着 说 ： 当 拜 主 你 的 神 ， 单 要 事 奉 他 。
11 於 是 ， 魔 鬼 离 了 耶 稣 ， 有 天 使 来 伺 候 他 。
12 耶 稣 听 见 约 翰 下 了 监 ， 就 退 到 加 利 利 去 ；
13 後 又 离 开 拿 撒 勒 ， 往 迦 百 农 去 ， 就 住 在 那 里 。 那 地 方 靠 海 ， 在 西 布 伦 和 拿 弗 他 利 的 边 界 上 。
14 这 是 要 应 验 先 知 以 赛 亚 的 话 ，
15 说 ： 西 布 伦 地 ， 拿 弗 他 利 地 ， 就 是 沿 海 的 路 ， 约 但 河 外 ， 外 邦 人 的 加 利 利 地 。
16 那 坐 在 黑 暗 里 的 百 姓 看 见 了 大 光 ； 坐 在 死 荫 之 地 的 人 有 光 发 现 照 着 他 们 。
17 从 那 时 候 ， 耶 稣 就 传 起 道 来 ， 说 ： 天 国 近 了 ， 你 们 应 当 悔 改 ！
18 耶 稣 在 加 利 利 海 边 行 走 ， 看 见 弟 兄 二 人 ， 就 是 那 称 呼 彼 得 的 西 门 和 他 兄 弟 安 得 烈 ， 在 海 里 撒 网 ； 他 们 本 是 打 鱼 的 。
19 耶 稣 对 他 们 说 ： 来 跟 从 我 ， 我 要 叫 你 们 得 人 如 得 鱼 一 样 。
20 他 们 就 立 刻 舍 了 网 ， 跟 从 了 他 。
21 从 那 里 往 前 走 ， 又 看 见 弟 兄 二 人 ， 就 是 西 庇 太 的 儿 子 雅 各 和 他 兄 弟 约 翰 ， 同 他 们 的 父 亲 西 庇 太 在 船 上 补 网 ， 耶 稣 就 招 呼 他 们 ，
22 他 们 立 刻 舍 了 船 ， 别 了 父 亲 ， 跟 从 了 耶 稣 。
23 耶 稣 走 遍 加 利 利 ， 在 各 会 堂 里 教 训 人 ， 传 天 国 的 福 音 ， 医 治 百 姓 各 样 的 病 症 。
24 他 的 名 声 就 传 遍 了 叙 利 亚 。 那 里 的 人 把 一 切 害 病 的 ， 就 是 害 各 样 疾 病 、 各 样 疼 痛 的 和 被 鬼 附 的 、 癫 痫 的 、 瘫 痪 的 ， 都 带 了 来 ， 耶 稣 就 治 好 了 他 们 。
25 当 下 ， 有 许 多 人 从 加 利 利 、 低 加 波 利 、 耶 路 撒 冷 、 犹 太 、 约 但 河 外 来 跟 着 他 。

耶稣基督的家谱
1 耶稣基督是亚伯拉罕的子孙、大卫的后裔，以下是祂的家谱：
2 亚伯拉罕生以撒，
以撒生雅各，
雅各生犹大和他的兄弟，
3 犹大和她玛生法勒斯和谢拉，
法勒斯生希斯仑[a]，
希斯仑生兰，
4 兰生亚米拿达，
亚米拿达生拿顺，

6 耶西生大卫王。

17 这样，从亚伯拉罕到大卫共有十四代，从大卫到被掳至巴比伦也是十四代，从被掳至巴比伦到基督降生也是十四代。
耶稣的降生
18 以下是耶稣基督降生的经过。
耶稣的母亲玛丽亚和约瑟订了婚，还没有成亲就从圣灵怀了孕。 19 约瑟是个义人，不愿公开地羞辱她，便决定暗中和她解除婚约。 20 他正在考虑这事的时候，主的一位天使在梦中向他显现，说：“大卫的后裔约瑟，不要怕，把玛丽亚娶过来，因为她所怀的孕是从圣灵来的。 21 她将生一个儿子，你要给祂取名叫耶稣[c]，因为祂要把自己的子民从罪恶中救出来。”
22 这一切应验了主借着先知所说的话： 23 “必有童贞女怀孕生子，祂的名字要叫以马内利，意思是‘上帝与我们同在’。” 24 约瑟醒来，就遵从主的天使的吩咐和玛丽亚结婚， 25 只是在她生下孩子之前没有与她同房。约瑟给孩子取名叫耶稣。
智者来朝拜
2 希律王执政期间，耶稣降生在犹太的伯利恒城。
当时有几位智者[d]从东方来到耶路撒冷， 2 问道：“那生来做犹太人之王的在哪里呢？我们在东方看见祂的星，特来朝拜祂。”
3 希律王听后，心里不安，全城的人都感到不安。 4 希律王就召来祭司长和律法教师，问他们：“基督在哪里降生呢？”
5 他们回答说：“在犹太的伯利恒，因为先知这样记载，
6 “‘犹大地区的伯利恒啊！
你在犹大各城中并不是最小的，
因为有一位君王要从你那里出来，
牧养我的以色列子民。’”
7 于是，希律暗中召见那几位智者，仔细查问那星出现的准确时间， 8 然后派他们去伯利恒，并吩咐道：“你们去仔细寻访那个小孩，找到了，就回来报信，我也好去朝拜祂。”
9 他们听了王的吩咐，就去了。忽然，那颗曾在东方出现的星又出现在他们前面，引领他们来到小孩耶稣所在的地方，便停下来。 10 他们看见那颗星，喜出望外。
11 他们进了屋子，看见孩子和祂母亲玛丽亚，就俯伏在地上拜祂，并打开盛宝物的盒子献上黄金、乳香和没药作礼物。 12 他们在梦中得到指示不可回希律那里，便改道返回了家乡。
逃往埃及
13 他们离开之后，主的天使在梦中向约瑟显现，说：“起来，带着小孩子和祂母亲逃往埃及，住在那里等候我的通知，因为希律要寻找这孩子，杀害祂。” 14 于是，约瑟起来带着孩子和祂母亲连夜逃往埃及， 15 并在那里一直住到希律死了。这就应验了主借着先知所说的话：“我把儿子从埃及召出来。”
16 希律见自己被智者愚弄，大为恼怒，便照着智者所说的时间推算，下令把伯利恒附近两岁以下的男孩杀光。 17 这正应验了耶利米先知的话：
18 “在拉玛有痛哭哀号的声音，
是拉结在为儿女哀痛，
不肯接受安慰，
因为他们都死了！”
定居拿撒勒
19 希律死后，主的天使在梦中向在埃及的约瑟显现，说： 20 “起来，带着孩子和祂母亲回以色列去吧！因为要杀害孩子的人已经死了。” 21 约瑟就起来，带着孩子和祂母亲返回以色列。
22 但约瑟听闻亚基劳继承父亲希律的王位统治犹太，就不敢回犹太。这时，他在梦中得到主的指示，便前往加利利地区， 23 定居在拿撒勒镇。这应验了先知的话：“祂将被称为拿撒勒人。”
开路先锋
3 那时，施洗者约翰来到犹太的旷野传道，说： 2 “悔改吧，因为天国临近了！” 3 约翰就是以赛亚先知所说的那位，他说：“有人在旷野大声呼喊，‘预备主的道，修直祂的路。’”
4 约翰身穿骆驼毛的衣服，腰束皮带，吃的是蝗虫、野蜜。 5 那时，耶路撒冷、犹太各地和约旦河一带的人都来到约翰那里， 6 承认他们的罪，在约旦河里接受他的洗礼。
7 约翰看见很多法利赛人和撒都该人也来受洗，就对他们说：“你们这些毒蛇的后代！谁指示你们逃避那将临的烈怒呢？ 8 你们要结出与悔改相称的果子。 9 不要心里说，‘我们是亚伯拉罕的子孙。’我告诉你们，上帝可以从这些石头中兴起亚伯拉罕的子孙。 10 现在斧头已经放在树根上了，不结好果子的树都要被砍下，丢在火里。 11 我用水为你们施洗，叫你们悔改。但在我之后，有位比我更有能力的要来，我连替祂提鞋都不配。祂要用圣灵和火为你们施洗。 12 祂手拿簸箕，要把谷场清理干净，将麦子存入仓里，用不灭的火把糠秕烧尽。”
耶稣受洗
13 后来，耶稣从加利利来到约旦河要约翰为祂施洗。 14 约翰想要拦住祂，就说：“应该是你为我施洗才对，你反倒来找我？”
15 耶稣回答说：“你就这样做吧！我们理当这样遵行上帝一切的要求。”于是约翰答应了。
16 耶稣受了洗，刚从水里上来，天就开了。祂看见上帝的圣灵像鸽子一样降到祂身上， 17 又有声音从天上传来：“这是我的爱子，我甚喜悦祂。”
耶稣受试探
4 后来，耶稣被圣灵带到旷野，去受魔鬼的试探。 2 耶稣禁食了四十昼夜后，很饥饿。 3 试探者前来对祂说：“如果你是上帝的儿子，可以叫这些石头变成食物。”
4 耶稣回答说：“圣经上说，‘人活着不是单靠食物，乃是靠上帝口中的每一句话。’”
5 魔鬼又带祂进圣城，让祂站在圣殿的最高处， 6 说：“如果你是上帝的儿子，就跳下去吧！因为圣经上说，‘上帝会差遣祂的天使用手托住你，不让你的脚碰在石头上。’”
7 耶稣回答说：“圣经上也说，‘不可试探主——你的上帝。’”
8 魔鬼再带耶稣到一座极高的山上，把世上万国及其荣华富贵展示给祂看， 9 说：“如果你俯伏敬拜我，我就把这一切都给你。”
10 耶稣说：“撒旦，走开！圣经上说，‘要敬拜主——你的上帝，单单事奉祂。’”

Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,(H)
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,(I)
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4 Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,(J)
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse the father of King David.(K)

12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,(O)
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,(P)
13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,
Abihud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14 Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Elihud,
15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,(Q) and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.(R)
17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(S) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(T) her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel(U) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(V) and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f](W) because he will save his people from their sins.”(X)
22 All this took place to fulfill(Y) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g](Z) (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(AA) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.(AB)
The Magi Visit the Messiah
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(AC) during the time of King Herod,(AD) Magi[h] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(AE) We saw his star(AF) when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem(AG) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[i]”(AH)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(AI) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(AJ) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(AK) in a dream(AL) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(AM) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(AN) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(AO)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(AP) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[j](AQ)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(AR)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(AS) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”[k](AT)
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(AU) of the Lord appeared in a dream(AV) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(AW)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(AX) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(AY) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(AZ) So was fulfilled(BA) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(BB)
John the Baptist Prepares the Way(BC)
3 In those days John the Baptist(BD) came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(BE) has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[l](BF)
4 John’s(BG) clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.(BH) His food was locusts(BI) and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized(BJ) by him in the Jordan River.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!(BK) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(BL) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.(BM) 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(BN) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.(BO)
11 “I baptize you with[m] water for repentance.(BP) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[n] the Holy Spirit(BQ) and fire.(BR) 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(BS)
The Baptism of Jesus(BT)
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.(BU) 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,(BV) and he saw the Spirit of God(BW) descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven(BX) said, “This is my Son,(BY) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”(BZ)
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(CA)
4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[o](CB) by the devil.(CC) 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights,(CD) he was hungry. 3 The tempter(CE) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,(CF) tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[p]”(CG)
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city(CH) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,”(CI) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[q]”(CJ)
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[r]”(CK)
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!(CL) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[s]”(CM)
11 Then the devil left him,(CN) and angels came and attended him.(CO)
Jesus Begins to Preach
12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison,(CP) he withdrew to Galilee.(CQ) 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum,(CR) which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill(CS) what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.”[t](CT)
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(CU) has come near.”
Jesus Calls His First Disciples(CV)
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,(CW) he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter(CX) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,”(CY) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.(CZ)
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.(DA) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.(DB)
Jesus Heals the Sick
23 Jesus went throughout Galilee,(DC) teaching in their synagogues,(DD) proclaiming the good news(DE) of the kingdom,(DF) and healing every disease and sickness among the people.(DG) 24 News about him spread all over Syria,(DH) and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed,(DI) those having seizures,(DJ) and the paralyzed;(DK) and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[u] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.(DL)
