A circuncisão em Gilgal

5 Quando as nações da banda ocidental do Jordão, os amorreus e os cananeus que viviam, estes últimos, na costa do Mediterrâneo, ouviram que o Senhor tinha secado o rio Jordão para que o povo de Israel pudesse passar, perderam completamente o alento e ficaram paralisados de terror.

2-3 O Senhor disse a Josué que reservasse um dia para circuncidar a população masculina de Israel. O Senhor deu-lhes instruções para fazerem facas de pedra, próprias para esse fim e o local onde o rito da circuncisão teve lugar ficou a chamar-se Colina dos Prepúcios.

4-5 A razão da cerimónia da circuncisão foi a seguinte: apesar de todos os homens que saíram do Egito, com idade para pegar em armas, terem sido circuncidados, toda essa geração morrera durante a travessia do deserto e nenhum dos rapazes entretanto nascidos tinha passado por esse rito. 6 Porque a nação de Israel percorrera o deserto, andando em várias direções, durante 40 anos, até que todos os homens com idade para o combate, na altura em que deixaram o Egito, morreram, visto não terem obedecido ao Senhor que lhes dissera que não haveriam de entrar na terra que prometera a Israel, uma terra onde jorra leite e mel. 7 Foi pois essa a razão por que Josué circuncidou os filhos deles, os homens que tinham crescido para tomarem o lugar dos pais.

8-9 E o Senhor disse a Josué: “Hoje coloquei fim[a] à vergonha de não serem cicuncidados.” O local onde isto foi feito chamou-se Gilgal (retirar) e é assim chamado até hoje. Após a cerimónia, a nação inteira repousou no acampamento até que as feridas sarassem.

10 Enquanto estavam acampados ali em Gilgal, nas planícies de Jericó, celebraram a Páscoa na noite do dia 14 do mês. 11 No dia seguinte começaram a comer dos frutos e dos cereais dos campos que invadiram, tendo feito pães sem fermento. 12 Nesse dia, o maná deixou de cair e nunca mais ninguém o achou. Portanto, a partir dessa altura passaram a comer das searas de Canaã.

A conquista de Jericó

13 Numa ocasião em que Josué estava perto da cidade de Jericó, apareceu-lhe um homem com uma espada desembainhada. Josué avançou para ele e perguntou: “És amigo ou inimigo?”

14 Ele respondeu: “Não. Sou o comandante do exército do Senhor e acabo de chegar.”

Josué prostou-se diante dele, adorou-o e disse: “Dá-me as tuas ordens.”

15 “Descalça-te, porque este terreno é santo.” E Josué obedeceu.

6 Os portais de Jericó eram mantidos completamente fechados, pois o povo estava cheio de medo dos israelitas e não deixavam ninguém entrar nem sair. 2 Mas o Senhor disse a Josué: “Jericó, o seu rei e todos os seus valentes guerreiros encontram-se praticamente derrotados, porque já os entreguei nas vossas mãos. 3 O vosso exército, com todos os seus efetivos, deverá rodear a cidade uma vez por dia durante seis dias seguidos. 4 Sete sacerdotes levarão a arca, cada um deles com uma trombeta feita de chifre de carneiro. No sétimo dia darão a volta à cidade sete vezes, com os sacerdotes tocando as trombetas. 5 Então, quando soprarem um longo e alto toque, todo o povo deverá gritar com muita força. Nessa altura, as muralhas da cidade cairão e poderão lá entrar por todos os lados.”

6-9 Josué convocou os sacerdotes e deu-lhes instruções: os homens armados conduziriam o cortejo, seguidos de sete sacerdotes soprando continuamente as trombetas. Atrás deles deveriam seguir os sacerdotes transportando a arca da aliança; fechando o cortejo, à retaguarda, seguiria um contingente.

10 “Ninguém falará, nem dirá nada; só se ouvirão as trombetas a tocar”, ordenou Josué. “Não dirão sequer uma palavra até que vos diga para gritarem; então gritem!” 11 A arca rodeou a cidade uma vez nesse dia e depois toda a gente regressou ao acampamento para passar a noite. 12 Ao amanhecer, Josué levantou-se e os sacerdotes pegaram na arca do Senhor. 13 Os sete sacerdotes que tocavam trombeta iam à frente da arca do Senhor. Adiante deles iam os guerreiros e o resto do exército seguia atrás da arca. Durante a marcha, jamais deixaram de tocar as trombetas. 14 No segundo dia, deram novamente uma volta à cidade e regressaram ao acampamento. E fizeram o mesmo durante seis dias.

15 Na manhã do sétimo dia fizeram o mesmo, mas desta vez rodearam a cidade não uma, mas sete vezes. 16 À sétima vez, quando os sacerdotes tocaram um som alto e prolongado com as trombetas, Josué bradou ao povo, “Gritem! O Senhor deu-nos a cidade!” 17 Anteriormente tinha-lhes dito: “Matem toda a gente, à exceção de Raabe, a meretriz, e de todos os que estiverem na sua casa, pois protegeu os nossos espias. 18 Não fiquem com coisa nenhuma do saque; tudo deverá ser destruído. Se assim não fizerem, cairá a desgraça sobre a nação de Israel. 19 No entanto, a prata e o ouro, os utensílios de bronze e de ferro, tudo isso será consagrado ao Senhor e deverá ser levado para o seu tesouro.”

20 Assim, quando todo o povo ouviu o toque das trombetas, gritaram tão alto quanto podiam e, repentinamente, as muralhas de Jericó ruíram; caíram na sua frente. O povo de Israel irrompeu sobre elas, penetrando na cidade por todos os lados e conquistou-a. 21 Destruíram tudo pela espada; homens e mulheres, novos e velhos, bois, cordeiros e jumentos.

22 Josué disse aos dois espias, “Mantenham a vossa palavra, quanto à promessa que fizeram, e recolham a meretriz e os que estão com ela.”

23 Os homens foram e trouxeram-na, a ela e ao pai e à mãe, aos irmãos e outros parentes que lá se encontravam. E deixaram-nos ficar a viver fora do acampamento de Israel. 24 Os israelitas queimaram a cidade e tudo o que ali havia, exceto a prata, o ouro e os utensílios de bronze e de ferro, que foram levados para o tesouro da casa do Senhor. 25 Josué salvou Raabe, a meretriz, e os parentes que estavam com ela dentro de casa, os quais vivem ainda hoje entre os israelitas, pois escondeu os espias que Josué enviara a Jericó.

26 Então Josué declarou uma maldição sobre quem viesse a reconstruir Jericó, advertindo que, quando os seus fundamentos fossem repostos, o filho mais velho do construtor haveria de morrer e que, quando as suas portas fossem montadas, seria o filho mais novo desse alguém que morreria.

27 Desta forma, o Senhor estava com Josué e o seu nome tornou-se famoso por toda a parte.

O pecado de Acã

7 O certo é que houve quem pecasse entre os israelitas. A ordem de Deus de tudo destruirem, exceto aquilo que tinha sido reservado para o tesouro do Senhor, foi desobedecida. Com efeito, Acã, filho de Carmi, neto de Zabdi e bisneto de Zera, da tribo de Judá, guardou algum do saque para si e o Senhor ficou extremamente irado com toda a nação de Israel por causa disso.

2 Pouco depois da derrota sofrida por Jericó, Josué enviou alguns dos seus homens a espiarem a cidade de Ai, perto de Bete-Aven, a oriente de Betel. 3 Quando regressaram disseram-lhe: “Trata-se duma pequena cidade e não serão precisos mais de dois ou três mil de nós para a destruir; não há necessidade nenhuma de irmos todos.”

4 Assim foram enviados aproximadamente três mil soldados que foram batidos completamente. 5 Trinta e seis israelitas foram mortos durante o ataque e muitos outros foram atacados, durante a perseguição que os homens de Ai lhes moveram, até ao sítio das pedreiras. O exército israelita ficou desolado e sem ânimo algum perante o sucedido.

6 Josué e os anciãos rasgaram as roupas que vestiam e prostraram-se perante a arca do Senhor até à noite, pondo terra sobre as cabeças. 7 Josué clamou: “Ó Senhor Deus, por que razão nos fizeste passar o Jordão, se vais deixar os amorreus matar-nos? O melhor que devíamos ter feito era contentarmo-nos em ficar do outro lado de lá! 8 Ó Senhor, que hei de eu fazer, agora que Israel fugiu dos seus inimigos? 9 Porque quando os cananeus e os outros povos dos arredores ouvirem o que se passou, cercar-nos-ão e hão de atacar-nos e expulsar-nos. Que vai acontecer à honra do teu grande nome?”

10 O Senhor respondeu-lhe: “Levanta-te! Não fiques assim prostrado com o rosto em terra. 11 Israel pecou e violou a minha aliança, desobedecendo às minhas ordens, tendo ficado com parte do saque, quando lhes tinha dito expressamente que não ficassem com coisa nenhuma; não somente ficaram com parte do saque, mas mentiram e esconderam-no entre a bagagem. 12 Foi por essa razão que Israel foi batido. Foi por isso que os teus homens fugiram dos inimigos; é que estavam sob a maldição. Não estarei convosco enquanto esse pecado não for desarraigado completamente do vosso meio.

13 Vamos, levanta-te! Diz ao povo assim: ‘Que cada um se submeta aos ritos próprios da purificação, preparando-se para o dia de amanhã, porque o Senhor, Deus de Israel, diz que alguém pretendeu roubá-lo; dessa maneira não podem derrotar os vossos inimigos até que afastem esse pecado. 14 Logo de manhã deverão vir por tribos e o Senhor indicará a tribo a quem pertence o culpado. Essa tribo apresentar-se-á por clãs e o Senhor apontará o clã culpado; depois virão as famílias desse clã uma por uma, e o Senhor mostrará qual a culpada. 15 Aquele que subtraiu o que pertencia ao Senhor deverá ser queimado, acompanhado de tudo o que lhe pertence, pois violou o acordo feito com o Senhor e trouxe a desgraça sobre Israel.’ ”

16 Assim, de manhã cedo, Josué trouxe as tribos de Israel e foi indicada a tribo de Judá. 17 Depois apresentaram-se os clãs respetivos e foi assinalado o clã de Zera. Depois foram trazidas as famílias desse clã e foi isolada a de Zabdi. 18 Por fim, vieram os homens dessa família, um por um, e foi o neto de Zabdi, Acã, que se revelou culpado.

19 Josué disse a Acã: “Meu filho, dá glória ao Senhor, o Deus de Israel, e confessa o teu pecado. Diz-me o que foi que fizeste.”

20 Acã respondeu: “Pequei contra o Senhor, o Deus de Israel. 21 Vi uma bela capa de Sinar,[b] e alguma prata, pesando uns 2 quilos, assim como uma barra de ouro de uns 600 gramas; cobicei estas coisas de tal maneira que fiquei com tudo para mim; estão escondidas debaixo do chão da minha tenda, com a prata enterrada por baixo de tudo.”

22 Josué mandou alguns homens procurarem essa parte do despojo; foram a correr à tenda e encontraram as coisas ali escondidas, segundo a indicação de Acã, e a prata por baixo do resto. 23 Trouxeram tudo a Josué e colocaram no chão diante do Senhor.

24 Josué e todos os israelitas pegaram em Acã, na prata, na capa e na pequena barra de ouro, nos seus filhos e filhas, nos seus bois, jumentos, cordeiros, na sua tenda, e tudo o que possuía, e levaram tudo e todos para o vale de Acor. 25 Então Josué disse a Acã: “Porque foi que preferiste trazer sobre nós todos a desgraça? O Senhor agora te desgraça a ti.” E os homens de Israel apedrejaram-nos até morrerem e queimaram os seus corpos. 26 As pedras ainda lá estão atualmente e aquele sítio continua a ser chamado o vale da Desgraça[c]. Foi assim que a ira tremenda do Senhor se apaziguou.

A destruição de Ai

8 Então o Senhor disse a Josué: “Não tenhas medo nem desanimes. Leva o exército todo e avança contra Ai, porque agora hás de conquistá-la. Entreguei-te o rei de Ai, assim como todo o seu povo, nas tuas mãos. 2 Farás com eles como fizeste com Jericó e o seu rei, mas desta vez poderão guardar para vocês o que tiver sido saqueado, mais o gado. Ponham uma emboscada por detrás da cidade.”

3-4 Antes que o grosso do exército se deslocasse para Ai, Josué enviou 30 000 dos seus soldados mais valentes para se emboscarem, mesmo atrás da cidade, preparados para entrarem em ação. 5 “É este o plano”, explicou-lhes. “Quando o exército atacar, os homens de Ai virão combater-nos, como fizeram antes, e nós fugiremos. 6 Deixaremos que nos persigam até que todos tenham abandonado a povoação; porque hão de pensar: ‘Os israelitas estão a fugir de nós, como fizeram antes!’ 7 Será então a altura de saírem da vossa emboscada e entrarem na cidade, porque é o Senhor, vosso Deus, quem vo-la dá. 8 Ponham fogo a tudo; é a ordem do Senhor. São estas as instruções que terão que cumprir.”

9 Assim, aquele batalhão de soldados especiais partiu de noite e emboscou-se entre Betel e o ocidente de Ai. Mas Josué e o resto do exército passou a noite com o povo.

10 Na manhã seguinte, logo muito cedo, Josué despertou os seus homens e partiu para Ai, acompanhado dos anciãos de Israel. 11 E parou à entrada do vale que está a norte da cidade. 12-13 Ainda durante a noite, Josué tinha mandado mais 5000 homens, além dos outros, para se juntarem às tropas emboscadas a oeste da povoação. Ele próprio passara a noite no vale.

14 O rei de Ai, vendo os israelitas espalhados nesse vale, saiu logo e atacou-os em direção ao vale de Arabá. Não se deu conta de que havia uma emboscada por detrás da povoação. 15 O exército israelita, com Josué no comando, fugiu em direção ao deserto, como se já estivesse a ser derrotado. 16 Por isso, todos os combatentes da povoação foram chamados a perseguirem-nos, deixando-a dessa forma sem defesa. 17 Não ficou um só soldado em Ai, nem sequer em Betel, e as portas da cidade ficaram abertas de par em par.

18 Então o Senhor disse a Josué: “Aponta a tua lança em direção a Ai, porque te darei a cidade.” Josué obedeceu. 19 Quando os homens da emboscada viram aquele sinal saltaram dos esconderijos e lançaram-se sobre a cidade, pondo-lhe fogo.

20 A gente de Ai voltou-se e viu o fumo da sua cidade escurecendo o céu, percebendo que não tinham para onde ir. 21 Josué e os seus soldados ao verem igualmente o fumo do incêndio tiveram a certeza de que os companheiros, que tinham ficado emboscados, se encontravam já dentro da povoação; voltaram-se então contra os seus perseguidores e começaram a liquidá-los. 22 Os israelitas que estavam em Ai saíram e puseram-se também, da sua banda, a destruí-los; de tal forma que, apanhados entre as duas forças, como numa ratoeira, acabaram todos por morrer; ninguém escapou ou sobreviveu, 23 exceto o rei, que foi capturado e trazido a Josué.

24 Quando o exército de Israel acabou de matar todos os homens que se encontravam fora da cidade, voltaram para a povoação e mataram a gente que tinha ficado lá dentro. 25 Foi assim que a população de Ai, ao todo 12 000 pessoas, caiu naquele dia. 26 Porque Josué manteve a sua lança apontada para Ai até que toda a gente tivesse morrido. 27 Somente o gado e o despojo saqueado não foram destruídos, pois desta vez os combatentes de Israel puderam guardá-los para si. Aliás, foi o Senhor que disse a Josué que desta vez podiam fazer isso. 28 Depois Josué incendiou Ai, deixando-a num montão de ruínas, desolada, e assim se manteve até ao dia de hoje.

29 Josué mandou enforcar o rei de Ai numa árvore e deixou-o lá ficar até ao fim do dia; ao pôr-do-sol tiraram o corpo e puseram-no em frente à porta da povoação, levantando sobre ele um grande montão de pedras, que ainda se pode ver hoje.

A aliança renovada no monte Ebal

30 Depois Josué construiu um altar ao Senhor Deus de Israel no monte Ebal, 31 como Moisés mandara e está escrito no livro da sua Lei: “O Senhor diz para lhe levantarem um altar no monte Ebal, feito de pedras inteiras que nunca tenham sido esculpidas.” Então os sacerdotes ofereceram holocaustos e ofertas de paz ao Senhor sobre o altar. 32 E na frente de todo o povo de Israel Josué gravou a Lei que Moisés tinha escrito sobre as pedras do altar.

33 Todo o povo de Israel, incluindo os anciãos, os chefes, os juízes e os estrangeiros que viviam com Israel, se dividiu em dois grupos, metade pondo-se junto ao monte de Gerizim e a outra metade ao pé do monte Ebal. Entre os dois grupos puseram-se os sacerdotes com a arca da aliança do Senhor, prontos a pronunciar as suas bênçãos. Tudo foi feito de acordo com as instruções dadas muito antes por Moisés.

34 Josué leu-lhes todo o texto, exprimindo as bênçãos e as maldições que Moisés escrevera no livro da Lei de Deus. 35 Todos os mandamentos que Moisés tinha dado anteriormente foram lidos perante a assembleia inteira, incluindo mulheres, crianças e estrangeiros que viviam com eles.

5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast(A) heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they[a] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear(B) and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal

2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives(C) and circumcise(D) the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[b]

4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age(E)—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.(F) 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness(G) forty years(H) until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us,(I) a land flowing with milk and honey.(J) 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.(K)

9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal[c](L) to this day.

10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month,(M) while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.(N) 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land:(O) unleavened bread(P) and roasted grain.(Q) 12 The manna stopped the day after[d] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.(R)

The Fall of Jericho

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man(S) standing in front of him with a drawn sword(T) in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown(U) to the ground(V) in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord[e] have for his servant?”

15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”(W) And Joshua did so.

6 Now the gates of Jericho(X) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered(Y) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns(Z) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.(AA) 5 When you hear them sound a long blast(AB) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;(AC) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”(AD) 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance(AE)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark(AF) of the Lord.”

8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard(AG) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!(AH)” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.

12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.(AI) 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!(AJ) 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[f](AK) to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute(AL) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid(AM) the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,(AN) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction(AO) and bring trouble(AP) on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(AQ) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”

20 When the trumpets sounded,(AR) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,(AS) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.(AT) 21 They devoted(AU) the city to the Lord and destroyed(AV) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

22 Joshua said to the two men(AW) who had spied out(AX) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(AY)” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(AZ) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

24 Then they burned the whole city(BA) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(BB) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.(BC) 25 But Joshua spared(BD) Rahab the prostitute,(BE) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(BF)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(BG) “Cursed(BH) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:

“At the cost of his firstborn son
    he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
    he will set up its gates.”(BI)

27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(BJ) and his fame spread(BK) throughout the land.

Achan’s Sin

7 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things[g];(BL) Achan(BM) son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,[h] the son of Zerah,(BN) of the tribe of Judah,(BO) took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned(BP) against Israel.(BQ)

2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai,(BR) which is near Beth Aven(BS) to the east of Bethel,(BT) and told them, “Go up and spy out(BU) the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.

3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, “Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.” 4 So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai,(BV) 5 who killed about thirty-six(BW) of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear(BX) and became like water.

6 Then Joshua tore his clothes(BY) and fell facedown(BZ) to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening.(CA) The elders of Israel(CB) did the same, and sprinkled dust(CC) on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord, why(CD) did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us?(CE) If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8 Pardon your servant, Lord. What can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth.(CF) What then will you do for your own great name?(CG)”

10 The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned;(CH) they have violated my covenant,(CI) which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied,(CJ) they have put them with their own possessions.(CK) 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies;(CL) they turn their backs(CM) and run(CN) because they have been made liable to destruction.(CO) I will not be with you anymore(CP) unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.

13 “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves(CQ) in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

14 “‘In the morning, present(CR) yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses(CS) shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man. 15 Whoever is caught with the devoted things(CT) shall be destroyed by fire,(CU) along with all that belongs to him.(CV) He has violated the covenant(CW) of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”(CX)

16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen. 17 The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen.(CY) He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen. 18 Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,(CZ) was chosen.(DA)

19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory(DB) to the Lord, the God of Israel, and honor him. Tell(DC) me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 21 When I saw in the plunder(DD) a beautiful robe from Babylonia,[i] two hundred shekels[j] of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels,[k] I coveted(DE) them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. 23 They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the Lord.

24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons(DF) and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.(DG) 25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble(DH) on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.”

Then all Israel stoned him,(DI) and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.(DJ) 26 Over Achan they heaped(DK) up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.(DL) Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger.(DM) Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor[l](DN) ever since.

Ai Destroyed

8 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid;(DO) do not be discouraged.(DP) Take the whole army(DQ) with you, and go up and attack Ai.(DR) For I have delivered(DS) into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land. 2 You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder(DT) and livestock for yourselves.(DU) Set an ambush(DV) behind the city.”

3 So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night 4 with these orders: “Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. 5 I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. 6 They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are running away from us as they did before.’ So when we flee from them, 7 you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand.(DW) 8 When you have taken the city, set it on fire.(DX) Do what the Lord has commanded.(DY) See to it; you have my orders.”

9 Then Joshua sent them off, and they went to the place of ambush(DZ) and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai—but Joshua spent that night with the people.

10 Early the next morning(EA) Joshua mustered his army, and he and the leaders of Israel(EB) marched before them to Ai. 11 The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city. 12 Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So the soldiers took up their positions—with the main camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley.

14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah.(EC) But he did not know(ED) that an ambush had been set against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back(EE) before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.(EF) 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away(EG) from the city. 17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.

18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the javelin(EH) that is in your hand,(EI) for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out toward the city the javelin that was in his hand.(EJ) 19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly(EK) from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.(EL)

20 The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky,(EM) but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers. 21 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from it, they turned around(EN) and attacked the men of Ai. 22 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so that they were caught in the middle, with Israelites on both sides. Israel cut them down, leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives.(EO) 23 But they took the king of Ai alive(EP) and brought him to Joshua.

24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it. 25 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai.(EQ) 26 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin(ER) until he had destroyed[m](ES) all who lived in Ai.(ET) 27 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua.(EU)

28 So Joshua burned(EV) Ai[n](EW) and made it a permanent heap of ruins,(EX) a desolate place to this day.(EY) 29 He impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening. At sunset,(EZ) Joshua ordered them to take the body from the pole and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And they raised a large pile of rocks(FA) over it, which remains to this day.

The Covenant Renewed at Mount Ebal

30 Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal(FB) an altar(FC) to the Lord, the God of Israel, 31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses—an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool(FD) had been used. On it they offered to the Lord burnt offerings and sacrificed fellowship offerings.(FE) 32 There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua wrote on stones a copy of the law of Moses.(FF) 33 All the Israelites, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, facing the Levitical(FG) priests who carried it. Both the foreigners living among them and the native-born(FH) were there. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal,(FI) as Moses the servant of the Lord had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel.

34 Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law.(FJ) 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them.(FK)
