Bò Con Vàng
32 Khi thấy đã quá lâu mà Môi-se chưa xuống núi, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên họp quanh A-rôn và nói: “Xin ông làm ra một vị thần để hướng dẫn chúng ta, vì không biết có gì đã xảy ra cho Môi-se, người đã đem chúng ta ra khỏi Ai-cập.”
2 A-rôn đáp: “Hãy tháo các bông tai bằng vàng của vợ, con trai và con gái các ông và đem đến đây cho tôi.” 3 Như vậy dân chúng tháo bông tai của họ và đem đến cho A-rôn. 4 Ông lấy các món họ đem đến, đúc một tượng hình bò con và dùng dụng cụ trau chuốt. Rồi họ reo hò: “Hỡi người Y-sơ-ra-ên, đây là thần của các ngươi, đã đem các ngươi ra khỏi xứ Ai-cập.”
5 Khi thấy vậy, A-rôn lập một bàn thờ trước con bò con và tuyên bố: “Ngày mai chúng ta sẽ tổ chức lễ mừng CHÚA.” 6 Qua ngày hôm sau dân chúng dậy sớm, dâng tế lễ thiêu và tế lễ cầu an rồi đứng dậy ăn uống vui chơi.
7 Lúc ấy, CHÚA phán dạy Môi-se: “Con xuống núi đi, vì đoàn dân con đem ra khỏi Ai-cập đã hư hỏng rồi. 8 Chúng đã vội bỏ con đường Ta truyền dạy mà làm cho mình một tượng hình bò con. Chúng đã quỳ lạy trước tượng đó, dâng tế lễ cho nó và nói: ‘Hỡi người Y-sơ-ra-ên, đây là thần của chúng ta, đã đem chúng ta ra khỏi Ai-cập.’ ”
9 CHÚA phán tiếp với Môi-se: “Ta đã thấy rõ dân này, chúng là một dân cứng cổ. 10 Con để mặc Ta để cho cơn giận Ta phừng lên nghịch với chúng và Ta sẽ tiêu diệt chúng. Rồi Ta sẽ làm cho con trở thành một dân tộc lớn.”
11 Nhưng Môi-se nài xin ơn huệ của CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của mình rằng: “Lạy CHÚA, tại sao cơn giận của Chúa phừng lên nghịch dân Chúa, là dân Chúa đã đem ra khỏi xứ Ai-cập với quyền năng lớn và với cánh tay toàn năng? 12 Tại sao để cho người Ai-cập nói rằng: ‘Khi đem họ ra Chúa có ác ý là để cho họ chết trên núi và để xóa sạch họ khỏi mặt đất?’ Xin Chúa nguôi cơn giận, đổi ý và không giáng tai họa trên dân Chúa. 13 Xin Chúa nhớ lại các tôi tớ của Chúa là Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác và Y-sơ-ra-ên, là những người được Chúa chỉ chính mình Chúa mà thề rằng: ‘Ta sẽ làm cho dòng dõi các ngươi đông như sao trên trời, Ta sẽ ban cho dòng dõi các ngươi tất cả đất đai Ta đã hứa với họ, và đất đó sẽ là cơ nghiệp vĩnh viễn của họ.’ ” 14 CHÚA đổi ý không giáng tai họa trên dân của Ngài như Ngài đã đe dọa.
15 Môi-se quay xuống núi, trong tay có cầm hai bảng Giao Ước. Hai bảng này viết cả hai mặt, mặt trước và mặt sau. 16 Hai bảng này là việc của Đức Chúa Trời làm, chữ trên đó là chữ của Đức Chúa Trời và được khắc trên bảng đá.
17 Khi Giô-suê nghe tiếng dân chúng reo hò liền nói với Môi-se: “Có tiếng chiến tranh trong trại quân.” 18 Nhưng Môi-se đáp: “Đó không phải là tiếng chiến thắng, cũng không phải là tiếng chiến bại; tiếng ta nghe là tiếng hát xướng.”
19 Khi đến gần trại quân và thấy bò con với cảnh nhảy múa, Môi-se nổi giận, ném hai bảng đá vào chân núi, làm vỡ tan tành. 20 Sau đó ông lấy tượng bò con đem đốt trong lửa; rồi ông nghiền tượng nát thành bột, đem bột rắc trên nước và bắt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên uống.
21 Rồi Môi-se nói với A-rôn: “Dân này đã làm gì cho anh mà anh dẫn họ vào tội lỗi trầm trọng như thế này?” 22 A-rôn đáp: “Xin chúa tôi đừng giận; chúa đã biết họ là dân có khuynh hướng làm điều ác. 23 Họ nói với tôi: ‘xin ông làm ra một vị thần để hướng dẫn chúng tôi vì không biết có gì xảy ra cho Môi-se là người đã đem chúng tôi ra khỏi Ai-cập.’ 24 Vì vậy tôi nói với họ: ‘Ai có các món đồ bằng vàng thì tháo ra’. Họ đem vàng đến cho tôi, tôi ném vàng đó vào lửa và từ đó mà ra bò con này.”
25 Môi-se nhận thấy dân chúng phóng đãng, vì A-rôn đã để cho họ buông lung và họ đã trở thành trò cười cho quân thù. 26 Vì vậy ông đứng tại cửa vào trại quân và nói: “Ai thuộc về CHÚA, hãy đến đây với tôi.” Tất cả người Lê-vi tập họp xung quanh Môi-se. 27 Môi-se nói với những người này: “Đây là điều CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán: ‘Mỗi người phải đeo gươm bên mình, rồi đi qua đi lại suốt trại quân từ đầu này đến đầu kia, mỗi người giết anh em, bạn hữu và láng giềng của mình.’ ” 28 Người Lê-vi vâng theo mạng lệnh Môi-se và trong ngày đó có độ ba ngàn người chết. 29 Môi-se nói với họ: “Hôm nay anh em đã được biệt riêng ra cho CHÚA, chẳng sá gì đến cả con cái và anh em mình; vì vậy Chúa giáng phước cho anh em hôm nay.”
30 Qua ngày hôm sau, Môi-se nói với dân chúng: “Anh chị em đã phạm một trọng tội. Nhưng tôi sẽ lên với CHÚA, có lẽ tôi có thể chuộc tội cho anh chị em.” 31 Vậy, Môi-se trở lên gặp CHÚA và thưa: “Chúa ôi! Dân này đã phạm tội quá nặng, đã làm cho mình một thần bằng vàng. 32 Nhưng xin Chúa tha tội cho họ, nếu không, xin Chúa xóa tên con khỏi sách Chúa đã viết đi!” 33 CHÚA đáp lời Môi-se: “Ai phạm tội với Ta, Ta sẽ xóa tên người đó khỏi sách Ta. 34 Còn bây giờ, con phải đi dẫn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đến nơi Ta đã bảo con và thiên sứ của Ta sẽ đi trước con. Tuy nhiên, khi thời điểm hình phạt đến. Ta sẽ hình phạt dân này vì tội lỗi của họ.” 35 CHÚA giáng bệnh dịch trên dân Y-sơ-ra-ên vì họ thờ phượng bò con A-rôn đã làm ra.

32 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the Lord.
6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
7 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:
8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
14 And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
31 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
35 And the Lord plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

32 When Moses didn’t come back down the mountain right away, the people went to Aaron. “Look,” they said, “make us a god to lead us, for this fellow Moses who brought us here from Egypt has disappeared; something must have happened to him.”
2-3 “Give me your gold earrings,” Aaron replied.
So they all did—men and women, boys and girls. 4 Aaron melted the gold, then molded and tooled it into the form of a calf. The people exclaimed, “O Israel, this is the god that brought you out of Egypt!”
5 When Aaron saw how happy the people were about it, he built an altar before the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a feast to Jehovah!”
6 So they were up early the next morning and began offering burnt offerings and peace offerings to the calf idol; afterwards they sat down to feast and drink at a wild party, followed by sexual immorality.
7 Then the Lord told Moses, “Quick! Go on down, for your people that you brought from Egypt have defiled themselves, 8 and have quickly abandoned all my laws. They have molded themselves a calf, and worshiped it, and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of Egypt.’”
9 Then the Lord said, “I have seen what a stubborn, rebellious lot these people are. 10 Now leave me alone and my anger shall blaze out against them and destroy them all; and I will make you, Moses, into a great nation instead of them.”
11 But Moses begged God not to do it. “Lord,” he pleaded, “why is your anger so hot against your own people whom you brought from the land of Egypt with such great power and mighty miracles? 12 Do you want the Egyptians to say, ‘God tricked them into coming to the mountains so that he could slay them, destroying them from off the face of the earth’? Turn back from your fierce wrath. Turn away from this terrible evil you are planning against your people! 13 Remember your promise to your servants—to Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. For you swore by your own self, ‘I will multiply your posterity as the stars of heaven, and I will give them all of this land I have promised to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’”
14 So the Lord changed his mind and spared them.
15 Then Moses went down the mountain, holding in his hands the Ten Commandments written on both sides of two stone tablets. 16 (God himself had written the commandments on the tablets.)
17 When Joshua heard the noise below them, of all the people shouting, he exclaimed to Moses, “It sounds as if they are preparing for war!”
18 But Moses replied, “No, it’s not a cry of victory or defeat, but singing.”
19 When they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing, and in terrible anger he threw the tablets to the ground, and they lay broken at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf and melted it in the fire, and when the metal cooled, he ground it into powder and spread it upon the water and made the people drink it.
21 Then he turned to Aaron. “What in the world did the people do to you,” he demanded, “to make you bring such a terrible sin upon them?”
22 “Don’t get so upset,” Aaron replied. “You know these people and what a wicked bunch they are. 23 They said to me, ‘Make us a god to lead us, for something has happened to this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt.’ 24 Well, I told them, ‘Bring me your gold earrings.’ So they brought them to me and I threw them into the fire, and . . . well . . . this calf came out!”
25 When Moses saw that the people had been committing adultery—at Aaron’s encouragement, and much to the amusement of their enemies— 26 he stood at the camp entrance and shouted, “All of you who are on the Lord’s side, come over here and join me.” And all the Levites came.
27 He told them, “Jehovah the God of Israel says, ‘Get your swords and go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other and kill even your brothers, friends, and neighbors.’” 28 So they did, and about three thousand men died that day.
29 Then Moses told the Levites, “Today you have ordained yourselves for the service of the Lord, for you obeyed him even though it meant killing your own sons and brothers; now he will give you a great blessing.”
30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin, but I will return to the Lord on the mountain—perhaps I will be able to obtain his forgiveness for you.”
31 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have sinned a great sin and have made themselves gods of gold. 32 Yet now if you will only forgive their sin—and if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.”[a]
33 And the Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me will be blotted out of my book. 34 And now go, lead the people to the place I told you about, and I assure you that my Angel shall travel on ahead of you; however, when I come to visit these people, I will punish them for their sins.”
35 And the Lord sent a great plague upon the people because they had worshiped Aaron’s calf.

The Golden Calf
32 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain,(A) they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before(B) us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”(C)
2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings(D) that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol(E) cast in the shape of a calf,(F) fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b](G) Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”(H)
5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival(I) to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings.(J) Afterward they sat down to eat and drink(K) and got up to indulge in revelry.(L)
7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt,(M) have become corrupt.(N) 8 They have been quick to turn away(O) from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol(P) cast in the shape of a calf.(Q) They have bowed down to it and sacrificed(R) to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’(S)
9 “I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked(T) people. 10 Now leave me alone(U) so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy(V) them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”(W)
11 But Moses sought the favor(X) of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?(Y) 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’?(Z) Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster(AA) on your people. 13 Remember(AB) your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self:(AC) ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars(AD) in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land(AE) I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’” 14 Then the Lord relented(AF) and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.
15 Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law(AG) in his hands.(AH) They were inscribed(AI) on both sides, front and back. 16 The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.(AJ)
17 When Joshua(AK) heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “There is the sound of war in the camp.”
18 Moses replied:
“It is not the sound of victory,
it is not the sound of defeat;
it is the sound of singing that I hear.”
19 When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf(AL) and the dancing,(AM) his anger burned(AN) and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces(AO) at the foot of the mountain. 20 And he took the calf the people had made and burned(AP) it in the fire; then he ground it to powder,(AQ) scattered it on the water(AR) and made the Israelites drink it.
21 He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?”
22 “Do not be angry,(AS) my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil.(AT) 23 They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’(AU) 24 So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”(AV)
25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock(AW) to their enemies. 26 So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him.
27 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’”(AX) 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29 Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.”
30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin.(AY) But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement(AZ) for your sin.”
31 So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed!(BA) They have made themselves gods of gold.(BB) 32 But now, please forgive their sin(BC)—but if not, then blot me(BD) out of the book(BE) you have written.”
33 The Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out(BF) of my book. 34 Now go, lead(BG) the people to the place(BH) I spoke of, and my angel(BI) will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish,(BJ) I will punish them for their sin.”
35 And the Lord struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf(BK) Aaron had made.

(AE)You know the people, that they are set on evil. 23 For they said to me, ‘Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24 And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
25 Now when Moses saw that the people were (AF)unrestrained (for Aaron (AG)had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies), 26 then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on the Lord’s side—come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and (AH)let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’ ” 28 So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day. 29 (AI)Then Moses said, [e]“Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, that He may bestow on you a blessing this day, for every man has opposed his son and his brother.”
30 Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, (AJ)“You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; (AK)perhaps I can (AL)make atonement for your sin.” 31 Then Moses (AM)returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have (AN)made for themselves a god of gold! 32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, (AO)blot me (AP)out of Your book which You have written.”
33 And the Lord said to Moses, (AQ)“Whoever has sinned against Me, I will (AR)blot him out of My book. 34 Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have (AS)spoken to you. (AT)Behold, My Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, (AU)in the day when I (AV)visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin.”
35 So the Lord plagued the people because of (AW)what they did with the calf which Aaron made.
