Psalm 137
New King James Version
Longing for Zion in a Foreign Land
137 By the rivers of Babylon,
There we sat down, yea, we wept
When we remembered Zion.
2 We hung our harps
Upon the willows in the midst of it.
3 For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song,
And those who (A)plundered us requested mirth,
Saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song
In a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
Let my right hand forget its skill!
6 If I do not remember you,
Let my (B)tongue cling to the roof of my mouth—
If I do not exalt Jerusalem
Above my chief joy.
7 Remember, O Lord, against (C)the sons of Edom
The day of Jerusalem,
Who said, [a]“Raze it, raze it,
To its very foundation!”
8 O daughter of Babylon, (D)who are to be destroyed,
Happy the one (E)who repays you as you have served us!
9 Happy the one who takes and (F)dashes
Your little ones against the rock!

How Shall We Sing the Lord's Song?
137 By the waters of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept,
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the willows[a] there
we hung up our lyres.
3 For there our captors
required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying,
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

Prayer and Praise for Deliverance from Enemies
A (A)Meditation[a] of David, which he sang to the Lord (B)concerning the words of Cush, a Benjamite.
7 O Lord my God, in You I put my trust;
(C)Save me from all those who persecute me;
And deliver me,
2 (D)Lest they tear me like a lion,
(E)Rending me in pieces, while there is none to deliver.
3 O Lord my God, (F)if I have done this:
If there is (G)iniquity in my hands,
4 If I have repaid evil to him who was at peace with me,
Or (H)have plundered my enemy without cause,
5 Let the enemy pursue me and overtake me;
Yes, let him trample my life to the earth,
And lay my honor in the dust. Selah
6 Arise, O Lord, in Your anger;
(I)Lift Yourself up because of the rage of my enemies;
(J)Rise up [b]for me to the judgment You have commanded!
7 So the congregation of the peoples shall surround You;
For their sakes, therefore, return on high.
8 The Lord shall judge the peoples;
(K)Judge me, O Lord, (L)according to my righteousness,
And according to my integrity within me.
9 Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end,
But establish the just;
(M)For the righteous God tests the hearts and [c]minds.
10 [d]My defense is of God,
Who saves the (N)upright in heart.
11 God is a just judge,
And God is angry with the wicked every day.
12 If he does not turn back,
He will (O)sharpen His sword;
He bends His bow and makes it ready.
13 He also prepares for Himself instruments of death;
He makes His arrows into fiery shafts.
14 (P)Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity;
Yes, he conceives trouble and brings forth falsehood.
15 He made a pit and dug it out,
(Q)And has fallen into the ditch which he made.
16 (R)His trouble shall return upon his own head,
And his violent dealing shall come down on [e]his own crown.
17 I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness,
And will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.
The Glory of the Lord in Creation
To the Chief Musician. [f]On the instrument of Gath. A Psalm of David.
8 O Lord, our Lord,
How (S)excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have (T)set Your glory above the heavens!
2 (U)Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have [g]ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence (V)the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I (W)consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
4 (X)What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You (Y)visit[h] him?
5 For You have made him a little lower than [i]the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.
6 (Z)You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
(AA)You have put all things under his feet,
7 All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,
8 The birds of the air,
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.
9 (AB)O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
Prayer and Thanksgiving for the Lord’s Righteous Judgments
To the Chief Musician. To the tune of [j]“Death of the Son.” A Psalm of David.
9 I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart;
I will tell of all Your marvelous works.
2 I will be glad and (AC)rejoice in You;
I will sing praise to Your name, (AD)O Most High.
3 When my enemies turn back,
They shall fall and perish at Your presence.
4 For You have maintained my right and my cause;
You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.
5 You have rebuked the [k]nations,
You have destroyed the wicked;
You have (AE)blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 O enemy, destructions are finished forever!
And you have destroyed cities;
Even their memory has (AF)perished.
7 (AG)But the Lord shall endure forever;
He has prepared His throne for judgment.
8 (AH)He shall judge the world in righteousness,
And He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness.
9 The Lord also will be a (AI)refuge[l] for the oppressed,
A refuge in times of trouble.
10 And those who (AJ)know Your name will put their trust in You;
For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Zion!
(AK)Declare His deeds among the people.
12 (AL)When He avenges blood, He remembers them;
He does not forget the cry of the [m]humble.
13 Have mercy on me, O Lord!
Consider my trouble from those who hate me,
You who lift me up from the gates of death,
14 That I may tell of all Your praise
In the gates of [n]the daughter of Zion.
I will (AM)rejoice in Your salvation.
15 (AN)The [o]nations have sunk down in the pit which they made;
In the net which they hid, their own foot is caught.
16 The Lord is (AO)known by the judgment He executes;
The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.
(AP)Meditation.[p] Selah
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell,
And all the [q]nations (AQ)that forget God.
18 (AR)For the needy shall not always be forgotten;
(AS)The expectation of the poor shall not perish forever.
19 Arise, O Lord,
Do not let man prevail;
Let the [r]nations be judged in Your sight.
20 Put them in fear, O Lord,
That the [s]nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah

In You Do I Take Refuge
A (A)Shiggaion[a] of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite.
7 O Lord my God, in you do I (B)take refuge;
(C)save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,
2 lest like (D)a lion they tear my soul apart,
rending it in pieces, with (E)none to deliver.
3 O Lord my God, (F)if I have done this,
if there is (G)wrong in my hands,
4 if I have repaid (H)my friend[b] with evil
or (I)plundered my enemy without cause,
5 let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it,
and let him (J)trample my life to the ground
and lay my glory in the dust. Selah
6 (K)Arise, O Lord, in your anger;
(L)lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;
(M)awake for me; you have appointed a judgment.
7 Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you;
over it return on high.
8 The Lord (N)judges the peoples;
(O)judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness
and according to the integrity that is in me.
9 Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,
and may you establish the righteous—
you who (P)test (Q)the minds and hearts,[c]
O righteous God!
10 My shield is (R)with God,
who saves (S)the upright in heart.
11 God is (T)a righteous judge,
and a God who feels (U)indignation every day.
12 If a man[d] does not repent, God[e] will (V)whet his sword;
he has (W)bent and (X)readied his bow;
13 he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,
making his (Y)arrows (Z)fiery shafts.
14 Behold, the wicked man (AA)conceives evil
and is (AB)pregnant with mischief
and gives birth to lies.
15 He makes (AC)a pit, digging it out,
and falls into the hole that he has made.
16 His (AD)mischief returns upon his own head,
and on his own skull his violence descends.
17 I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness,
and I will (AE)sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.
How Majestic Is Your Name
To the choirmaster: according to The (AF)Gittith.[f] A Psalm of David.
8 O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your (AG)name in all the earth!
You have set your (AH)glory above the heavens.
2 (AI)Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established (AJ)strength because of your foes,
to still (AK)the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I (AL)look at your heavens, the work of your (AM)fingers,
the moon and the stars, (AN)which you have set in place,
4 (AO)what is man that you are (AP)mindful of him,
and (AQ)the son of man that you (AR)care for him?
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than (AS)the heavenly beings[g]
and crowned him with (AT)glory and honor.
6 You have given him (AU)dominion over the works of your hands;
(AV)you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
I Will Recount Your Wonderful Deeds
[h] To the choirmaster: according to Muth-labben.[i] A Psalm of David.
9 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your (AW)wonderful deeds.
2 I will be glad and (AX)exult in you;
I will (AY)sing praise to your name, (AZ)O Most High.
3 When my enemies turn back,
they stumble and perish before[j] your presence.
4 For you have (BA)maintained my just cause;
you have (BB)sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment.
5 You have (BC)rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish;
you have (BD)blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;
their cities you rooted out;
the very memory of them has perished.
7 But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
he has established his throne for justice,
8 and he (BE)judges the world with righteousness;
he (BF)judges the peoples with uprightness.
9 The Lord is (BG)a stronghold for (BH)the oppressed,
a stronghold in (BI)times of trouble.
10 And those who (BJ)know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who (BK)sits enthroned in Zion!
Tell among the peoples his (BL)deeds!
12 For he who (BM)avenges blood is mindful of them;
he (BN)does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
13 (BO)Be gracious to me, O Lord!
See my affliction from those who hate me,
O you who lift me up from (BP)the gates of death,
14 that I may recount all your praises,
that in the gates of (BQ)the daughter of Zion
I may (BR)rejoice in your salvation.
15 The nations have sunk in (BS)the pit that they made;
in (BT)the net that they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 The Lord has made himself (BU)known; he has executed judgment;
the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. Higgaion.[k] Selah
