Psalm 134[a]

Exhortation to the Night Watch to Bless God

1 A song of ascents.

O come, bless the Lord,
    all you servants of the Lord[b]
You who stand in the house of the Lord
    throughout the nights.(A)
2 Lift up your hands toward the sanctuary,(B)
    and bless the Lord.
3 May the Lord bless you from Zion,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.(C)

  1. Psalm 134 A brief liturgy exhorting all those who serve in the Jerusalem Temple during the night (cf. Is 30:29) to praise God with words and gestures. Although he is the Creator of the whole universe, God’s blessings emanate in a unique way from Zion, the city of Jerusalem.

who serve[d] in the Lord’s temple during the night.
2 Lift your hands toward the sanctuary
and praise the Lord.
3 May the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth,
bless you[e] from Zion.[f]

  1. Psalm 134:1 sn Psalm 134. The psalmist calls on the temple servants to praise God (vv. 1-2). They in turn pronounce a blessing on the psalmist (v. 3).
  2. Psalm 134:1 sn The precise significance of this title, which appears in Pss 120-134, is unclear. Perhaps worshipers recited these psalms when they ascended the road to Jerusalem to celebrate annual religious festivals. For a discussion of their background see L. C. Allen, Psalms 101-150 (WBC), 219-21.
