3 Eu sunt bărbatul care a văzut suferinţa

2 El m-a condus şi m-a făcut să merg
prin întuneric, nu prin lumină!
3 Da, El Îşi întoarce mâna împotriva mea
toată ziua!
4 El mi-a îmbătrânit trupul şi pielea
şi mi-a zdrobit oasele.
5 M-a asediat şi m-a înconjurat
cu otravă şi cu nenorocire.
6 M-a făcut să locuiesc în întunecimi
asemenea celor morţi demult.
7 M-a înconjurat cu un zid, ca să nu pot scăpa,
şi m-a pus în lanţuri grele.
8 Chiar şi atunci când strig şi plâng după ajutor,
El îmi respinge rugăciunea.
9 Drumurile mi le-a blocat cu pietre cioplite
şi mi-a întortocheat cărările.
10 A fost pentru mine ca un urs care stă la pândă
şi ca un leu aflat într-un loc ascuns.
11 M-a abătut de la căile mele, m-a sfâşiat
şi m-a lăsat pustiit.
12 Şi-a încordat arcul
şi m-a făcut ţinta săgeţii Lui.
13 Mi-a străpuns inima
cu săgeţi din tolba Lui.
14 Am ajuns de râsul tuturor celor din poporul meu.
Sunt batjocorit toată ziua în cântecele lor.
15 M-a îndestulat cu ierburi amare
şi m-a săturat cu pelin.
16 Mi-a zdrobit dinţii cu pietriş
şi m-a culcat în cenuşă[a].
17 Mi-a luat pacea
şi am uitat ce înseamnă fericirea.
18 Am zis: „S-a dus puterea mea de viaţă
şi ceea ce nădăjduiam de la Domnul!“
19 Îmi amintesc de durerea şi de rătăcirea mea,
de amărăciune şi de pelin.
20 Sufletul meu îşi aduce aminte mereu de ele
şi se întristează în mine.
21 Dar iată ce-mi vine în minte
şi ce mă face să mai nădăjduiesc:
22 „Îndurările[b] Domnului nu s-au sfârşit,
mila Lui nu este la capăt.[c]
23 Ele se înnoiesc în fiecare dimineaţă;
mare este credincioşia Ta!“
24 Am zis sufletului meu: „Domnul este moştenirea mea
şi de aceea voi nădăjdui în El!“
25 Domnul este bun cu cel ce nădăjduieşte în El,
cu sufletul care-L caută.
26 Bine este să aştepţi în tăcere
izbăvirea Domnului.
27 Este bine ca omul să poarte un jug
în tinereţea lui.
28 Să stea singur şi să tacă,
fiindcă Domnul l-a aşezat pe gâtul lui;
29 să-şi umple gura cu ţărână –
s-ar putea să mai existe nădejde;
30 să-şi dea obrazul celui ce-l loveşte
şi să se sature de insulte!
31 Fiindcă Stăpânul nu respinge
pentru totdeauna.
32 Ci, când mâhneşte pe cineva, se îndură iarăşi de el,
după bunătatea Lui cea mare.
33 Căci El nu necăjeşte,
nici nu întristează cu plăcere pe fiii oamenilor.
34 Când sunt călcaţi în picioare
toţi prizonierii unei ţări,
35 când dreptatea umană este îndepărtată
înaintea Celui Preaînalt,
36 când un om este nedreptăţit în cauza lui,
nu vede, oare, Stăpânul?
37 Cine poate spune ceva şi să se înfăptuiască,
dacă Stăpânul nu a poruncit?
38 Oare nu din gura Celui Preaînalt vine
şi nenorocirea, şi bunăstarea?[d]
39 Atunci de ce murmură omul,
când este pedepsit pentru păcatele lui?
40 Să luăm aminte la căile noastre, să le cercetăm
şi să ne întoarcem la Domnul.
41 Să ne înălţăm inimile şi mâinile
spre Dumnezeul din ceruri şi să spunem:
42 „Am păcătuit şi ne-am răzvrătit,
iar Tu nu ai iertat!“
43 Te-ai învăluit cu mânie şi ne-ai urmărit;
ai ucis fără milă.
44 Te-ai învăluit cu un nor,
ca nici o rugăciune să nu ajungă la Tine.
45 Ne-ai prefăcut în gunoi şi în murdărie
în mijlocul popoarelor.
46 Toţi vrăjmaşii noştri
şi-au deschis larg gura împotriva noastră.
47 Am avut parte de groază şi de groapă,
de prăpăd şi de distrugere.
48 Şuvoaie de lacrimi se scurg din ochii mei
căci fiica poporului meu a fost distrusă.
49 Ochii mi se vor topi de lacrimi neîncetat
şi fără oprire,
50 până când Domnul din ceruri
va privi şi va lua aminte.
51 Mi s-a întristat sufletul când le-am văzut
pe toate fiicele cetăţii mele.
52 Cei ce-mi erau vrăjmaşi fără motiv
m-au vânat ca pe o pasăre.
53 Au încercat să-mi pună capăt vieţii într-o groapă
şi au aruncat cu pietre în mine.
54 Apele s-au revărsat peste capul meu
şi mi-am zis: „Sunt pierdut!“
55 Dar am chemat Numele Tău, Doamne,
din adâncimile gropii.
56 Tu mi-ai auzit glasul: „Nu-Ţi astupa urechea
la strigătele mele după ajutor!“
57 În ziua când Te-am chemat, Te-ai apropiat
şi mi-ai răspuns: „Nu te teme!“
58 Stăpâne, Tu ai apărat cauza sufletului meu,
mi-ai răscumpărat viaţa!
59 Doamne, Tu ai văzut răul care mi s-a făcut!
Judecă-mi cauza!
60 Ai văzut toată dorinţa lor de răzbunare
şi planurile lor împotriva mea.
61 Doamne, Tu le-ai auzit batjocurile
şi toate uneltirile îndreptate împotriva mea,
62 ai auzit şoaptele potrivnicilor mei
şi murmurul lor îndreptat înspre mine toată ziua.
63 Priveşte! Şezând sau în picioare,
ei mă batjocoresc în cântecele lor!
64 Răsplăteşte-le, Doamne,
după faptele mâinilor lor!
65 Pune un văl peste inimile lor
şi fie blestemul Tău peste ei!
66 Urmăreşte-i în mânia Ta şi nimiceşte-i
de sub ceruri, Doamne!

Suferinţe şi mângâieri
3 Eu sunt omul care a văzut suferinţa sub nuiaua urgiei Lui.
2 El m-a dus, m-a mânat în întuneric, şi nu în lumină.
3 Numai împotriva mea îşi întinde şi îşi întoarce mâna toată ziua.
4 Mi-a prăpădit(A) carnea şi pielea şi mi-a zdrobit(B) oasele.

37 Cine a spus(AB) şi s-a întâmplat ceva fără porunca Domnului?
38 Nu ies din gura Celui Preaînalt răul(AC) şi binele?
39 De ce(AD) să se plângă omul cât trăieşte? Fiecare(AE) să se plângă mai bine de păcatele lui!
40 Să luăm seama la umbletele noastre, să le cercetăm şi să ne întoarcem la Domnul.
41 Să ne înălţăm(AF) şi inimile cu mâinile spre Dumnezeu din cer, zicând:
42 „Am păcătuit(AG), am fost îndărătnici, şi nu ne-ai iertat!”
43 În mânia Ta, Te-ai ascuns şi ne-ai urmărit, ai ucis(AH) fără milă.
44 Te-ai învăluit într-un nor, ca(AI) să nu străbată la Tine rugăciunea noastră.
45 Ne-ai făcut de batjocură(AJ) şi de ocară printre popoare.
46 Toţi vrăjmaşii(AK) noştri deschid gura împotriva noastră.

4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old(E)

5 He has besieged me and surrounded me

6 He has made me dwell in darkness

7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape;(J)
he has weighed me down with chains.(K)
8 Even when I call out or cry for help,(L)

3 I Am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
2 He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.
3 Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.
4 My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.
5 He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
6 He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
7 He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
8 Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.
9 He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.
10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
11 He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.
12 He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
13 He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
14 I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
15 He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.
16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
17 And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.
18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord:
19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.
20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
22 It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
28 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.
29 He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.
30 He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.
31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever:
32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
33 For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth.
35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,
36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.
37 Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
39 Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.
41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
42 We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.
43 Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
44 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.
45 Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.
46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
47 Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.
48 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission.
50 Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
51 Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.
52 Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.
53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
54 Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
55 I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.
56 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
58 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.
59 O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.
60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.
61 Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, and all their imaginations against me;
62 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.
63 Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.
64 Render unto them a recompence, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.
65 Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.
66 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the Lord.
