Jezus komt terug
22 De engel liet mij een rivier zien met water dat leven geeft. Helder als kristal was het. 2 Het kwam uit de troon van God en van het Lam en stroomde midden over de hoofdstraat van de stad. Aan weerskanten van de rivier stond een boom die leven geeft en die twaalf keer per jaar vruchten droeg, elke maand een keer. De bladeren van de boom zijn voor de genezing van de volken. 3 Er zal niets meer zijn waar een vloek op rust. De troon van God en van het Lam zal in de stad staan en al zijn knechten zullen Hem vereren. 4 Zij zullen zijn gezicht zien en zijn naam zal op hun voorhoofd staan. 5 Er zal geen nacht meer zijn. Zij zullen geen lamp nodig hebben en ook het licht van de zon niet, omdat de Here God hun licht zal zijn. En zij zullen voor altijd en eeuwig regeren.
6 Daarna zei de engel tegen mij: ‘Deze woorden zijn waar en betrouwbaar. De Here God, die de profeten ingeeft wat zij moeten zeggen, heeft zijn engel gestuurd om zijn dienaren te laten zien wat er binnenkort moet gebeuren. 7 Jezus zegt: “Ja, Ik kom gauw.” Gelukkig is de mens die zich houdt aan de profetische woorden van dit boek.’
8 Ik, Johannes, zag en hoorde al deze dingen en viel op mijn knieën voor de engel die ze me had laten zien en wilde hem aanbidden. 9 Maar hij zei: ‘Doe dat niet! Ik ben slechts een dienaar van de Here, net als u en uw broeders en zusters, de profeten en net als ieder die zich houdt aan wat in dit boek staat. Aanbid alleen God!’
10 Daarna zei hij: ‘Verzegel dit boek met profetische woorden niet, want de tijd waarin zij uitkomen, is niet ver meer. 11 Wie verkeerd doet, zal nog meer verkeerd doen. Wie vuil is, zal nog vuiler worden. Maar wie goed doet, moet nog meer goed doen en wie aan God toebehoort, moet zich nog meer aan Hem toewijden.’
12 ‘Ja,’ zegt Jezus, ‘Ik kom gauw met mijn beloning. Ik geef ieder het loon voor zijn daden. 13 Ik ben de Alfa en de Omega, de eerste en de laatste, het begin en het einde.’ 14 Gelukkig zijn zij die hun kleren wassen: zij mogen van de levensboom eten en door de poorten van de stad binnengaan. 15 Buiten de stad zijn de honden, de tovenaars, de overspeligen, de moordenaars, de afgodendienaars en allen die met plezier liegen en bedriegen.
16 ‘Ik, Jezus, heb mijn engel gestuurd opdat u dit allemaal aan de gemeenten zult vertellen. Ik ben de nakomeling uit het geslacht van David. Ik ben de schitterende morgenster.’
17 De Geest en de bruid zeggen: ‘Kom.’ En wie dat hoort, moet ook zeggen: ‘Kom.’ Wie dorst heeft: kom maar. En wie graag wil drinken: neem maar van het water dat leven geeft, gratis.
18 Ik waarschuw ieder die de profetische woorden van dit boek hoort: als iemand er iets aan toevoegt, zal God hem de rampen laten overkomen die in dit boek staan. 19 Als iemand iets van de profetische woorden van dit boek afneemt, zal God hem het recht afnemen om van de boom die leven geeft te eten en in de stad van God te komen, waarover in dit boek gesproken wordt. 20 Hij die dit alles bekend heeft gemaakt, zegt: ‘Ja, Ik kom al spoedig.’ Amen. Ja, Here Jezus, kom!
21 Ik wens u allen de genade van de Here Jezus Christus toe. Amen.

22 Then the angel showed me the river(A) of the water of life,(B) as clear as crystal,(C) flowing(D) from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life,(E) bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.(F) 3 No longer will there be any curse.(G) The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.(H) 4 They will see his face,(I) and his name will be on their foreheads.(J) 5 There will be no more night.(K) They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.(L) And they will reign for ever and ever.(M)
John and the Angel
6 The angel said to me,(N) “These words are trustworthy and true.(O) The Lord, the God who inspires the prophets,(P) sent his angel(Q) to show his servants the things that must soon take place.”
7 “Look, I am coming soon!(R) Blessed(S) is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.”(T)
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things.(U) And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet(V) of the angel who had been showing them to me. 9 But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll.(W) Worship God!”(X)
10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up(Y) the words of the prophecy of this scroll,(Z) because the time is near.(AA) 11 Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.”(AB)
Epilogue: Invitation and Warning
12 “Look, I am coming soon!(AC) My reward is with me,(AD) and I will give to each person according to what they have done.(AE) 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega,(AF) the First and the Last,(AG) the Beginning and the End.(AH)
14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes,(AI) that they may have the right to the tree of life(AJ) and may go through the gates(AK) into the city.(AL) 15 Outside(AM) are the dogs,(AN) those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
16 “I, Jesus,(AO) have sent my angel(AP) to give you[a] this testimony for the churches.(AQ) I am the Root(AR) and the Offspring of David,(AS) and the bright Morning Star.”(AT)
17 The Spirit(AU) and the bride(AV) say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.(AW)
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll:(AX) If anyone adds anything to them,(AY) God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll.(AZ) 19 And if anyone takes words away(BA) from this scroll of prophecy,(BB) God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life(BC) and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.
20 He who testifies to these things(BD) says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”(BE)
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.(BF)
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people.(BG) Amen.
