The Tribes Settling East of the Jordan(A)
32 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and when they saw the land of (B)Jazer and the land of (C)Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock, 2 the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, 3 “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, (D)Nimrah, (E)Heshbon, Elealeh, (F)Shebam, Nebo, and (G)Beon, 4 the country (H)which the Lord defeated before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” 5 Therefore they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not take us over the Jordan.”
6 And Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben: “Shall your brethren go to war while you sit here? 7 Now why will you (I)discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord has given them? 8 Thus your fathers did (J)when I sent them away from Kadesh Barnea (K)to see the land. 9 For (L)when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, so that they did not go into the land which the Lord had given them. 10 (M)So the Lord’s anger was aroused on that day, and He swore an oath, saying, 11 ‘Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, (N)from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because (O)they have not wholly followed Me, 12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, (P)for they have wholly followed the Lord.’ 13 So the Lord’s anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them (Q)wander in the wilderness forty years, until (R)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone. 14 And look! You have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the (S)fierce anger of the Lord against Israel. 15 For if you (T)turn away from following Him, He will once again leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people.”
16 Then they came near to him and said: “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, 17 but (U)we ourselves will be armed, ready to go before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 (V)We will not return to our homes until every one of the children of Israel has [a]received his inheritance. 19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, (W)because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Jordan.”
20 Then (X)Moses said to them: “If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before the Lord for the war, 21 and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before the Lord until He has driven out His enemies from before Him, 22 and (Y)the land is subdued before the Lord, then afterward (Z)you may return and be blameless before the Lord and before Israel; and (AA)this land shall be your possession before the Lord. 23 But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure (AB)your sin will find you out. 24 (AC)Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do [b]what has proceeded out of your mouth.”
25 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying: “Your servants will do as my lord commands. 26 (AD)Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead; 27 (AE)but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, just as my lord says.”
28 So Moses gave command (AF)concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel. 29 And Moses said to them: “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before the Lord, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession. 30 But if they do not cross over armed with you, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”
31 Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying: “As the Lord has said to your servants, so we will do. 32 We will cross over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, but the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us on this side of the Jordan.”
33 So (AG)Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, (AH)the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country. 34 And the children of Gad built (AI)Dibon and Ataroth and (AJ)Aroer, 35 Atroth and Shophan and (AK)Jazer and Jogbehah, 36 (AL)Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, (AM)fortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37 And the children of Reuben built (AN)Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim, 38 (AO)Nebo and (AP)Baal Meon (AQ)(their names being changed) and Shibmah; and they gave other names to the cities which they built.
39 And the children of (AR)Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and [c]dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40 So Moses (AS)gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it. 41 Also (AT)Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its small towns, and called them (AU)Havoth Jair.[d] 42 Then Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah, after his own name.

32 Los hijos de Rubén y los hijos de Gad tenían incontables cabezas de ganado, así que cuando vieron la tierra de Jazer y de Galaad, les pareció el lugar ideal para sus ganados. 2 Entonces los hijos de Gad y los hijos de Rubén fueron a hablar con Moisés y con el sacerdote Eleazar, lo mismo que con los príncipes de la congregación, y les dijeron:
3 «Atarot, Dibón, Jazer, Nimrá, Jesbón, Eleale, Sebán, Nebo y Beón, 4 es decir, la tierra que el Señor derrotó ante la congregación de Israel, es tierra para ganado, y tus siervos lo tienen. 5 Si te parece bien, ordena que esta tierra le sea dada a tus siervos como su propiedad familiar. ¡No nos hagas cruzar el Jordán!»
6 Moisés les respondió a los hijos de Gad y a los hijos de Rubén:
«¿Y sus hermanos irán a la guerra, mientras ustedes se quedan aquí? 7 ¿Por qué desaniman así a los hijos de Israel, para que no pasen a la tierra que el Señor les ha dado? 8 Eso mismo hicieron los padres de ustedes, cuando desde Cadés Barnea los envié a explorar la tierra. 9 Subieron hasta el torrente de Escol, y luego de ver la tierra desalentaron a los hijos de Israel para que no entraran en la tierra que el Señor les había dado.(B) 10 Entonces la ira del Señor se encendió, por lo que juró: 11 “Los hombres mayores de veinte años, que salieron de Egipto, no fueron perfectos ni me han seguido; por eso no verán la tierra que juré darles a Abrahán, Isaac y Jacob. 12 Sólo la verán Caleb hijo de Yefune el quenizita, y Josué hijo de Nun, porque ellos sí fueron perfectos y me han seguido.” 13 (En efecto, la ira del Señor se encendió contra Israel, y durante cuarenta años los hizo andar errantes por el desierto, hasta que se acabó toda esa generación que hizo lo malo delante del Señor.(C))
14 »Y ahora resulta que ustedes, prole de pecadores, siguen el mal ejemplo de sus padres y añaden más a la ira del Señor contra Israel. 15 Si ustedes se apartan de él, él se apartará de ustedes y los dejará en el desierto, pero ustedes habrán acabado con todo este pueblo.»
16 Entonces ellos hablaron con Moisés y le dijeron:
«Vamos a levantar aquí corrales para nuestro ganado, y ciudades para nuestros hijos, 17 pero nosotros tomaremos las armas y marcharemos sin temor al frente de los hijos de Israel, hasta que los hayamos introducido en su tierra. Nuestros hijos se quedarán en ciudades fortificadas, por causa de los habitantes del país, 18 pero nosotros no volveremos a nuestras casas hasta que los hijos de Israel hayan tomado posesión de la tierra que les corresponde. 19 Nosotros ya no tomaremos posesión de nada que esté al otro lado del Jordán, ni más allá, porque ya tendremos nuestra propia tierra en esta ribera oriental del río Jordán.»
20 Y Moisés les respondió:
«Si realmente lo hacen así, y si se disponen a ir a la guerra delante del Señor, 21 y si delante del Señor todos ustedes toman las armas y cruzan el Jordán, hasta desalojar a sus enemigos delante de ustedes 22 y sojuzgar el país delante del Señor, y si después de eso vuelven, quedarán exculpados ante el Señor y ante Israel, y esta tierra será de ustedes por la voluntad del Señor. 23 Pero si no lo hacen así, habrán pecado a los ojos del Señor, y sepan bien que su pecado los alcanzará. 24 Erijan ciudades para sus niños, y corrales para sus ovejas, y hagan todo lo que han dicho.»
25 Los hijos de Gad y los hijos de Rubén respondieron entonces a Moisés:
«Estos siervos tuyos harán lo que tú, señor nuestro, nos has ordenado. 26 Nuestros hijos, nuestras mujeres y nuestros ganados, y todos nuestros animales, se quedarán aquí, en las ciudades de Galaad, 27 y nosotros tus siervos tomaremos las armas y marcharemos a la guerra delante del Señor, tal y como tú, señor nuestro, lo has dicho.»
28 Moisés dio entonces instrucciones al sacerdote Eleazar y a Josué hijo de Nun, lo mismo que a los principales jefes de las tribus de Israel. 29 Les dijo:
«Si los hijos de Gad y los hijos de Rubén cruzan el Jordán con ustedes, todos ellos armados delante del Señor y listos para la guerra, después de que ustedes hayan sojuzgado el país les darán posesión de la tierra de Galaad. 30 Pero si no cruzan el río con sus armas, entonces les darán su posesión entre ustedes, en la tierra de Canaán.»
31 Los hijos de Gad y los hijos de Rubén respondieron:
«Haremos todo lo que el Señor les ha dicho a estos siervos tuyos. 32 Delante del Señor cruzaremos el río, e iremos armados a la tierra de Canaán, pero nuestra propiedad familiar será la de este lado del Jordán.»(D)
33 Fue así como Moisés les dio a los hijos de Gad, a los hijos de Rubén, y a la media tribu de Manasés hijo de José, el reino de Sijón, el rey amorreo, y el reino de Og, el rey de Basán, junto con su territorio y sus ciudades, y las ciudades de los alrededores. 34 Los hijos de Gad edificaron Dibón, Atarot, Aroer, 35 Atarot Sofán, Jazer, Yogbeá, 36 y las ciudades fortificadas de Bet Nimrá y Bet Arán, y construyeron corrales para sus ovejas. 37 Los hijos de Rubén edificaron Jesbón, Eleale, Quiriatayin, 38 Nebo, Baal Megón y Sibemá, y a las ciudades que edificaron les dieron otro nombre. 39 Los hijos de Maquir hijo de Manasés fueron a Galaad y la conquistaron, y echaron de allí a los amorreos que la habitaban. 40 A Maquir hijo de Manasés, Moisés le dio Galaad, y Maquir se quedó a vivir en ella. 41 Por su parte, Yaír hijo de Manasés fue y conquistó sus propias aldeas, y les puso por nombre Javot Yaír.[a] 42 Nobaj fue y conquistó Kenat y sus aldeas, y le puso por nombre Nobaj, es decir, su propio nombre.

32 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks,(A) saw that the lands of Jazer(B) and Gilead(C) were suitable for livestock.(D) 2 So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community,(E) and said, 3 “Ataroth,(F) Dibon,(G) Jazer,(H) Nimrah,(I) Heshbon,(J) Elealeh,(K) Sebam,(L) Nebo(M) and Beon(N)— 4 the land the Lord subdued(O) before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock,(P) and your servants have livestock. 5 If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.(Q)”
6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, “Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here? 7 Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the Lord has given them?(R) 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.(S) 9 After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol(T) and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them. 10 The Lord’s anger was aroused(U) that day and he swore this oath:(V) 11 ‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more(W) when they came up out of Egypt(X) will see the land I promised on oath(Y) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(Z)— 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’(AA) 13 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel(AB) and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.(AC)
14 “And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel.(AD) 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.(AE)”
16 Then they came up to him and said, “We would like to build pens(AF) here for our livestock(AG) and cities for our women and children. 17 But we will arm ourselves for battle[a] and go ahead of the Israelites(AH) until we have brought them to their place.(AI) Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance.(AJ) 19 We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance(AK) has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”(AL)
20 Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle(AM) 21 and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven his enemies out before him(AN)— 22 then when the land is subdued before the Lord, you may return(AO) and be free from your obligation to the Lord and to Israel. And this land will be your possession(AP) before the Lord.(AQ)
23 “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.(AR) 24 Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks,(AS) but do what you have promised.(AT)”
25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “We your servants will do as our lord commands.(AU) 26 Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead.(AV) 27 But your servants, every man who is armed for battle, will cross over to fight(AW) before the Lord, just as our lord says.”
28 Then Moses gave orders about them(AX) to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun(AY) and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.(AZ) 29 He said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you,(BA) you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession.(BB) 30 But if they do not cross over(BC) with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan.(BD)”
31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the Lord has said.(BE) 32 We will cross over before the Lord into Canaan armed,(BF) but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.(BG)”
33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites,(BH) the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh(BI) son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites(BJ) and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan(BK)—the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.(BL)
34 The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,(BM) 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer,(BN) Jogbehah,(BO) 36 Beth Nimrah(BP) and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.(BQ) 37 And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon,(BR) Elealeh(BS) and Kiriathaim,(BT) 38 as well as Nebo(BU) and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah.(BV) They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
39 The descendants of Makir(BW) son of Manasseh went to Gilead,(BX) captured it and drove out the Amorites(BY) who were there. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites,(BZ) the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. 41 Jair,(CA) a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.[b](CB) 42 And Nobah captured Kenath(CC) and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah(CD) after himself.(CE)
