Chapter 12
Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses. 1 Miriam[a] and Aaron criticized Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married, for he had married an Ethiopian woman. 2 They said, “Has the Lord only spoken through Moses? Has he not also spoken through us?” And the Lord heard this.
3 Now Moses was very humble, more so than anyone else upon the face of the earth. 4 Suddenly the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and Miriam, saying, “Come out, you three, from the tent of meeting.” And the three of them came out. 5 The Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance to the tabernacle and summoned Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. 6 [b]He said, “Hear now my words:
“If anyone among you is a prophet,
I, the Lord, make myself known to him in a vision,
I speak to him in a dream.
7 It is not that way with Moses,
who is entrusted with all my household.
8 I speak to him face to face,
clearly, and not in riddles.
He beholds the very form of the Lord.
Why then were you not afraid to criticize my servant Moses?” 9 Then the anger of the Lord blazed against them, and he departed.
10 Miriam’s Punishment. When the cloud lifted up off of the tabernacle, there stood Miriam, leprous, white as snow. Aaron turned toward Miriam and saw that she was a leper. 11 Aaron said to Moses, “Please, my lord, do not hold the sin against us that we have so foolishly committed! 12 Let her not be like a stillborn child who comes forth from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.” 13 Moses cried out to the Lord, “O God, I beseech you, heal her!” 14 The Lord replied to Moses, “If her father had only spit in her face, would she not have been shamed for seven days? Confine her outside of the camp for seven days. After that, let her be received back in.”
15 So Miriam was confined outside of the camp for seven days. The people did not move on until Miriam was brought back in. 16 After this, the people left Hazeroth and they camped in the Desert of Paran.

- Numbers 12:1 Miriam is the sister of Moses; the Ethiopian is Zipporah, a Midianite (Ex 2:21). In Israelite thinking, marriage with a foreign woman was cause for a family to lose the gift of prophecy.
- Numbers 12:6 The poetic form emphasizes the solemn nature of the words that single out Moses as the only prophet worthy of God’s trust.

12 (A)Miriam e Aaronne parlarono contro Mosè a causa della moglie cusita che aveva presa; poiché aveva sposato una Cusita. 2 E dissero: «Il Signore ha parlato soltanto per mezzo di Mosè? Non ha parlato anche per mezzo nostro?» E il Signore lo udì. 3 Or Mosè era un uomo molto umile, più di ogni altro uomo sulla faccia della terra.
4 Il Signore disse a un tratto a Mosè, ad Aaronne e a Miriam: «Uscite voi tre, e andate alla tenda di convegno». Uscirono tutti e tre. 5 Il Signore scese in una colonna di nuvola, si fermò all’ingresso della tenda, chiamò Aaronne e Miriam; tutti e due si fecero avanti. 6 Il Signore disse: «Ascoltate ora le mie parole; se vi è tra di voi qualche profeta, io, il Signore, mi faccio conoscere a lui in visione, parlo con lui in sogno. 7 Non così con il mio servo Mosè, che è fedele in tutta la mia casa[a]. 8 Con lui io parlo a tu per tu, con chiarezza, e non per via di enigmi; egli vede la sembianza del Signore. Perché dunque non avete temuto di parlare contro il mio servo, contro Mosè?»
9 L’ira del Signore si accese contro di loro, ed egli se ne andò, 10 e la nuvola si ritirò di sopra alla tenda; ed ecco Miriam era lebbrosa, bianca come neve; Aaronne guardò Miriam e vide che era lebbrosa. 11 Aaronne disse a Mosè: «Ti prego, mio signore, non farci portare la pena di un peccato che abbiamo stoltamente commesso e di cui siamo colpevoli. 12 Ti prego, che lei non sia come il bimbo nato morto, la cui carne è già mezzo consumata quando esce dal seno materno!» 13 Mosè gridò al Signore, dicendo: «Guariscila, o Dio, te ne prego!» 14 Il Signore rispose a Mosè: «Se suo padre le avesse sputato in viso, non ne porterebbe la vergogna per sette giorni? Stia dunque isolata fuori dell’accampamento sette giorni; poi vi sarà di nuovo ammessa». 15 Miriam dunque fu isolata fuori dell’accampamento sette giorni; e il popolo non si mise in cammino finché Miriam non fu riammessa nell’accampamento.
16 Poi il popolo partì da Aserot e si accampò nel deserto di Paran.

12 When they were in Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses on account of the Cushite woman whom he had married—for he had married a Cushite woman. 2 They said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” The Lord heard it. 3 Now the man Moses was humble, more so than anyone on earth.
The Lord defends Moses
4 Immediately, the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “You three go out to the meeting tent.” So the three of them went out. 5 Then the Lord descended in a column of cloud, stood at the entrance of the tent, and called to Aaron and Miriam. The two of them came forward. 6 He said, “Listen to my words: If there is a prophet of the Lord among you,[a] I make myself known to him in visions. I speak to him in dreams. 7 But not with my servant Moses. He has proved to be reliable with all my household. 8 I speak with him face-to-face, visibly, not in riddles. He sees the Lord’s form. So why aren’t you afraid to criticize my servant Moses?” 9 The Lord’s anger blazed against them, and they went back.
The Lord punishes Miriam
10 When the cloud went away from over the tent, Miriam suddenly developed a skin disease flaky like snow. Aaron turned toward Miriam and saw her skin disease. 11 Then Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my master, please don’t punish us for the sin that we foolishly committed. 12 Please don’t let her be like the stillborn, whose flesh is half eaten as it comes out of the mother’s womb.”
13 So Moses cried to the Lord, “God, please heal her!”
14 The Lord said to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face, would she not be shamed for seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp for seven days, and afterward she will be brought back.” 15 So they shut Miriam out of the camp seven days. And the people didn’t march until Miriam was brought back. 16 Afterward the people marched from Hazeroth, and they camped in the Paran desert.
