以色列人第一次数点人口

1 以色列人出埃及地以后，第二年二月一日，耶和华在西奈的旷野，在会幕里对摩西说： 2 “你们要把以色列全体会众，按着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，统计人口；所有男丁，都要按着人口登记。 3 在以色列中，凡是二十岁及以上，能出去打仗的，你和亚伦要按着他们的队伍数点他们。 4 每一个支派要有一人帮助你们；他们每一个都是他父家的首领。 5 以下就是帮助你们的人的名字：属流本支派的，有示丢珥的儿子以利蓿； 6 属西缅支派的，有苏利沙代的儿子示路蔑； 7 属犹大支派的，有亚米拿达的儿子拿顺； 8 属以萨迦支派的，有苏押的儿子拿坦业； 9 属西布伦支派的，有希伦的儿子以利押； 10 约瑟的子孙中，属以法莲支派的，有亚米忽的儿子以利沙玛；属玛拿西支派的，有比大蓿的儿子迦玛列； 11 属便雅悯支派的，有基多尼的儿子亚比但。 12 属但支派的，有亚米沙代的儿子亚希以谢； 13 属亚设支派的，有俄兰的儿子帕结； 14 属迦得支派的，有丢珥的儿子以利雅萨； 15 属拿弗他利支派的，有以南的儿子亚希拉。 16 这些人是从会众中选出来，都是他们宗族支派的领袖；他们是以色列的族长。” 17 于是，摩西和亚伦带着这些提名指定的人， 18 在二月一日召集了全体会众；他们就照着他们的宗族，按照他们的父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上的，都按着人口一一登记了。 19 耶和华怎样吩咐摩西，摩西就怎样在西奈的旷野数点了他们。

20 以色列的长子，流本子孙的后代，照着宗族、父家，根据人名数目，按着人口，二十岁及以上，能出去打仗的男丁，都登记了； 21 流本支派被数点的，共有四万六千五百人。

22 西缅子孙的后代，照着宗族、父家，根据人名数目，按着人口，二十岁及以上，能出去打仗的男丁，都登记了； 23 西缅支派被数点的，共有五万九千三百人。

24 迦得子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 25 迦得支派被数点的，共有四万五千六百五十人。

26 犹大子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 27 犹大支派被数点的，共有七万四千六百人。

28 以萨迦子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 29 以萨迦支派被数点的，共有五万四千四百人。

30 西布伦子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 31 西布伦支派被数点的，共有五万七千四百人。

32 约瑟的儿子，以法莲子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 33 以法莲支派被数点的，共有四万零五百人。

34 玛拿西子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 35 玛拿西支派被数点的，共有三万二千二百人。

36 便雅悯子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 37 便雅悯支派被数点的，共有三万五千四百人。

38 但子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 39 但支派被数点的，共有六万二千七百人。

40 亚设子孙的后代，照着宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 41 亚设支派被数点的，共有四万一千五百人。

42 拿弗他利子孙的后代，照着他们的宗族、父家，根据人名数目，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的，都登记了； 43 拿弗他利支派被数点的，共有五万三千四百人。

44 以上就是被数点的人数，是摩西和亚伦，以及以色列的首领十二人（每父家一人）所数点的。 45 这样，在以色列中，按着父家，二十岁及以上，凡是能出去打仗的以色列人，都登记了； 46 被数点的，共有六十万零三千五百五十人。

利未人不计算在内

47 只有利未人没有按着他们家族的支派，数点在其中。 48 因为耶和华曾对摩西说： 49 “只有利未支派，你不可数点，也不可把他们的总数列入以色列人中。 50 只要派利未人管理法柜的帐幕，和其中的一切器具，以及一切属于帐幕的事物；他们要抬帐幕和其中的一切器具；他们要办理帐幕的事，在帐幕四周安营。 51 帐幕要起行的时候，利未人要把它拆卸下来；帐幕要支搭的时候，利未人要把它竖立起来；如果有外人走近，必须处死。 52 以色列人安营，要依照他们的队伍，各归本营，各归本旗。 53 但利未人要在法柜帐幕的四周安营，免得　神的忿怒临到以色列的会众；利未人要负看守法柜的帐幕的责任。” 54 以色列人就这样行了，耶和华怎样吩咐摩西，他们就怎样行。

各支派扎营的次序和位置

2 耶和华对摩西和亚伦说： 2 “以色列人要各归自己的旗下，在自己父家的旗号下安营；他们要在会幕四周稍远的地方安营。 3 在东方向着日出之地，按着队伍安营的，是犹大营的旗号；犹大人的领袖是亚米拿达的儿子拿顺。 4 他的队伍被数点的，共有七万四千六百人。 5 在他旁边安营的，是以萨迦支派；以萨迦人的领袖是苏押的儿子拿坦业， 6 他的队伍被数点的，共有五万四千四百人。 7 又有西布伦支派；西布伦人的领袖是希伦的儿子以利押。 8 他的队伍被数点的，共有五万七千四百人。 9 凡是属犹大营，按着队伍被数点的，共有十八万六千四百人；他们要首先出发。

10 “在南方，按着队伍，是流本营的旗号；流本人的领袖是示丢珥的儿子以利蓿。 11 他的队伍被数点的，共有四万六千五百人。 12 在他旁边安营的，是西缅支派；西缅人的领袖是苏利沙代的儿子示路蔑。 13 他的队伍被数点的，共有五万九千三百人。 14 又有迦得支派；迦得人的领袖是丢珥的儿子以利雅萨。 15 他的队伍被数点的，共有四万五千六百五十人。 16 凡是属流本营，按着队伍被数点的，共有十五万一千四百五十人；他们要作第二队起行。

17 “会幕和利未人的营要在众营中间前行；他们怎样安营，就怎样出发前行；各按本位，各归本旗。

18 “在西方，按着队伍，是以法莲营的旗号；以法莲人的领袖是亚米忽的儿子以利沙玛。 19 他的队伍被数点的，共有四万零五百人。 20 在他旁边的，是玛拿西支派，玛拿西人的领袖是比大蓿的儿子迦玛列。 21 他的队伍被数点的，共有三万二千二百人。 22 又有便雅悯支派；便雅悯人的领袖是基多尼的儿子亚比但。 23 他的队伍被数点的，共有三万五千四百人。 24 凡是属以法莲营，按着队伍被数点的，共有十万零八千一百人；他们要作第三队起行。

25 “在北方，按着队伍，是但营的旗号；但人的领袖是亚米沙代的儿子亚希以谢。 26 他的队伍被数点的，共有六万二千七百人。 27 在他旁边安营的，是亚设支派；亚设人的领袖是俄兰的儿子帕结。 28 他的队伍被数点的，共有四万一千五百人。 29 又有拿弗他利支派；拿弗他利人的领袖是以南的儿子亚希拉。 30 他的队伍被数点的，共有五万三千四百人。 31 凡是属但营被数点的，共有十五万七千六百人；他们要随着自己的旗号，最后起行。”

32 以上是照着他们的父家被数点的以色列人；所有按着他们的队伍在众营中被数点的，共有六十万零三千五百五十人。 33 只有利未人没有数点在以色列人中，这是耶和华吩咐摩西的。 34 以色列人就照着耶和华吩咐摩西的一切行了，他们随着自己的旗号安营，各人按着自己的宗族和父家起行。

亚伦的后代

3 耶和华在西奈山上与摩西说话的日子，亚伦和摩西的后代如下。 2 亚伦的儿子的名字如下：长子是拿答，还有亚比户、以利亚撒、以他玛。 3 这就是亚伦的儿子的名字，他们是受膏的祭司，是摩西叫他们承受圣职担任祭司的职分的。 4 拿答和亚比户在西奈旷野把凡火献在耶和华面前的时候，死在耶和华面前；他们没有儿子；以利亚撒和以他玛，就在他们的父亲亚伦面前，担任祭司的职分。

利未人的职责

5 耶和华对摩西说： 6 “你要叫利未支派近前来，使他们站在亚伦祭司面前，可以服事他。 7 他们要替亚伦和全体会众，在会幕前尽上本分，办理帐幕的事。 8 他们又要看守管理会幕里的一切器具，也要替以色列人尽上本分，办理帐幕的事。 9 你要把利未人派给亚伦和他的儿子，因为他们是从以色列人中选出来完全给他的。 10 你要委派亚伦和他的儿子，使他们谨守自己祭司的职分；外人走近，必被治死。”

利未人被选

11 耶和华告诉摩西： 12 “看哪，我从以色列人中，拣选了利未人，代替以色列人所有头生的，就是他们的长子，所以利未人要归我。 13 因为所有头生的，都是我的；我在埃及地击杀所有头生的那天，就把以色列中所有头生的，无论人畜，都分别为圣归我；他们要归我，我是耶和华。”

数点利未人的人口

14 耶和华在西奈旷野对摩西说： 15 “你要照着利未人的父家、宗族，数点他们；所有男丁，一个月及以上的，你都要数点。” 16 于是，摩西照着耶和华的命令，就是耶和华吩咐他的，数点了利未人。 17 利未众子的名字是：革顺、哥辖、米拉利。 18 革顺儿子的名字，按着宗族，是立尼和示每。 19 哥辖的儿子，按着宗族，是暗兰、以斯哈、希伯伦、乌薛。 20 米拉利的儿子，按着宗族，是抹利、母示。这些人按着他们的父家，都是利未人的宗族。

21 属革顺的，有立尼家族和示每家族；这是革顺人的家族。 22 根据所有男丁的数目，一个月及以上，被数点的，共有七千五百人。 23 革顺人的家族，要在帐幕的后面，就是西方安营； 24 革顺人家族的领袖是拉伊勒的儿子以利雅萨。 25 革顺的子孙在会幕中的职分，是看守帐幕、罩棚、罩棚的顶盖和会幕门口的帘子， 26 还有院子的帷幔、院子门口的帘子（院子是环绕帐幕和祭坛的），以及院子使用的一切绳子。

27 属哥辖的，有暗兰家族、以斯哈家族、希伯伦家族和乌薛家族；这是哥辖人的家族。 28 根据所有男丁的数目，一个月及以上的，共有八千六百人；他们要尽看守圣所的职分。 29 哥辖子孙的家族要在帐幕的南方安营。 30 哥辖家族的领袖是乌薛的儿子以利撒反。 31 他们的职分是管理约柜、桌子、灯台、两座坛，以及他们在圣所内使用的器具、帘子和帐幕里使用的一切东西。 32 亚伦祭司的儿子以利亚撒要作利未人众领袖中的领袖，要监察那些尽看守圣所职分的人。

33 属米拉利的，有抹利家族和母示家族；这些是米拉利的家族。 34 根据所有男丁的数目，一个月及以上，被数点的，共有六千二百人。 35 米拉利二家族的领袖，是亚比亥的儿子苏列；他们要在帐幕的北方安营。 36 米拉利子孙的职分，是看守帐幕的木板、门闩、柱子、插座、一切器具，以及负责一切有关的事务， 37 还有看守院子四周的柱子、插座、橛子和绳子。

38 在帐幕前面东边，就是在会幕前向日出的方向安营的，是摩西、亚伦和亚伦的儿子；他们代替以色列人应尽的职责，看守圣所；外人近前来，必被治死。 39 摩西和亚伦照着耶和华的命令，数点了所有的利未人；按着家族，凡是男丁，一个月及以上被数点的，共有二万二千人。

利未人代替以色列人头生的

40 耶和华对摩西说：“以色列人中所有头生的男子，一个月及以上的，你都要数点；登记他们的姓名。 41 我是耶和华，你要把利未人归我，代替以色列人所有头生的；也要把利未人的牲畜归我，代替以色列人中一切头生的牲畜。” 42 摩西就照着耶和华吩咐他的，把以色列人所有头生的都数点了。 43 根据人名的数目，一个月及以上，凡是头生的男子，被数点的，共有二万二千二百七十三个。

44 耶和华对摩西说： 45 “你要拣选利未人代替以色列人所有头生的，也要拣选利未人的牲畜代替以色列人的牲畜；利未人要归我，我是耶和华。 46 至于那超过利未人总数的二百七十三个，需要赎回的以色列人的长子， 47 你要每人收取赎银五十七克，要按照人数，根据圣所的秤收取，就是按照圣所的标准重量（“就是按照圣所的标准重量”，原文作“一舍客勒是二十季拉”）。 48 你要把那超额人数的赎银，交给亚伦和他的儿子。” 49 于是，摩西就从那些被利未人赎回以外的人收取赎银； 50 从头生的以色列人收取的银子，根据圣所的秤，共有约十五公斤。 51 摩西照着耶和华的吩咐，把这赎银交给了亚伦和他的儿子，正如耶和华吩咐摩西的。

哥辖子孙的职责

4 耶和华对摩西和亚伦说： 2 “你要从利未人中，登记哥辖子孙的总数，照着他们的家族、父家， 3 从三十岁以上，直到五十岁，能进来供职，在会幕里工作的，你都要登记。 4 哥辖子孙在会幕里的工作就是管理至圣之物。 5 起营出发的时候，亚伦和他的儿子要进去，把遮盖至圣所的幔子卸下来，用来遮盖约柜； 6 又把海狗皮罩盖在上面，再铺上纯蓝色的布，然后把杠穿上。 7 在陈设饼的桌子上，他们要铺上蓝色布，把盘子、碟子、杯和奠酒的爵摆在上面，桌子上也必须有常献饼； 8 在这些物件上面，他们要铺上朱红色布，再盖上海狗皮罩，然后把杠穿上。 9 他们要拿蓝色布，把灯台和灯台上的灯盏、剪子、蜡花盘，以及为灯台所用一切盛油的器具遮盖起来。 10 他们又要把灯台和灯台的一切器具，都包在海狗皮里，然后放在抬架上。 11 在金坛上面，他们要铺上蓝色布，再盖上海狗皮罩，然后把杠穿上。 12 他们又要把圣所里供职使用的一切器具，都包在蓝色布里，再盖上海狗皮罩，然后放在抬架上。 13 他们要清除坛上的灰，把紫色布铺在坛上。 14 又要把在坛上供职使用的一切器具，就是火鼎、肉叉、铲子、盘子，都摆在上面；再盖上海狗皮罩，然后穿上杠。 15 全营出发的时候，亚伦和他的儿子，把圣所和圣所的一切器具遮盖完了以后，哥辖的子孙就要来抬；只是他们不可触摸圣物，免得他们死亡。会幕里这些物件是哥辖的子孙应当抬的。 16 亚伦祭司的儿子以利亚撒的职务是看管点灯的油、芬芳的香、常献的素祭和膏油，也要看管整个帐幕和其中所有的一切，以及圣所和圣所的器具。”

17 耶和华对摩西和亚伦说： 18 “你们不可把哥辖家族的派系从利未人中剪除； 19 他们接近至圣之物的时候，亚伦和他的儿子要进去，指定他们各人当办的和当抬的工作；你们要这样待他们，好让他们活着，不至死亡； 20 只是他们连片刻也不可进去观看圣物，免得他们死亡。”

革顺子孙的职责

21 耶和华对摩西说： 22 “你也要登记革顺子孙的总数，照着他们的父家、家族， 23 从三十岁以上，直到五十岁，能进来供职，在会幕里工作的，你都要数点。 24 革顺人的家庭所作的事和所抬的物如下： 25 他们要抬帐幕的幔子、会幕和会幕的盖，以及盖在上面的海狗皮罩和会幕的门帘、 26 院子的帷子、院子的门帘（院子是围绕帐幕和祭坛的）、绳子，以及一切使用的器具；有关这些器具所当作的，他们都要办理。 27 革顺的子孙所有的任务，他们在一切当抬的和当办的事上，都要照着亚伦和他儿子的吩咐；他们当抬的，你们都要把职务分派给他们。 28 这是革顺子孙的家族在会幕里所办的事；他们的职务要受亚伦祭司的儿子以他玛的管理。

29 “米拉利的子孙，你也要照着他们的宗族，按着他们的家室数点他们； 30 从三十岁以上，直到五十岁，能进来供职，在会幕里工作的，你都要数点。 31 他们在会幕里的一切事奉，他们的职务，就是抬帐幕的木板、横闩、柱子和插座、 32 院子四周的柱子、插座、橛子、绳子、一切用具和使用的东西；他们当抬的器具，你们要按着名字一一指定。 33 这是米拉利子孙的家族在会幕里所办的一切事务，都受亚伦祭司的儿子以他玛的管理。”

数点利未各宗族的人口

34 摩西、亚伦和会众的领袖们，把哥辖的子孙，按着他们的宗族和父家， 35 从三十岁以上，直到五十岁，能进来供职，在会幕里工作的，都数点了。 36 按着宗族，他们被数点的，共有二千七百五十人。 37 这是哥辖家族被数点的人数，是所有在会幕里办事的人数，就是摩西和亚伦，照着耶和华藉摩西吩咐数点的。

38 革顺的子孙，按着他们的宗族和父家被数点的， 39 从三十岁以上，直到五十岁，能进去供职，在会幕里工作的， 40 按着他们的宗族和父家，被数点的人数，共有二千六百三十人。 41 这些是革顺子孙的家族被数点的人数，是一切在会幕里办事的，就是摩西和亚伦照着耶和华的吩咐数点的。

42 米拉利的子孙，按着宗族和父家， 43 从三十岁以上，直到五十岁，能进去供职，在会幕里工作的，都数点了。 44 按着宗族，他们被数点的，共有三千二百人。 45 这些是米拉利子孙的家族被数点的人数，就是摩西和亚伦，照着耶和华的吩咐数点的。

46 被数点的利未人，就是摩西和亚伦，以及以色列的众领袖，按着宗族和家室数点的， 47 从三十岁以上，直到五十岁，可以进去供职，在会幕里作抬物件的工作的， 48 他们的人数，共有八千五百八十人。 49 照着耶和华藉摩西吩咐的，把他们数点，各人按着自己所办的事和所抬的物件被数点，正如耶和华吩咐摩西的。

除净不洁

5 耶和华对摩西说： 2 “你要吩咐以色列人，把所有患痲风病的，患漏症的，以及因接触死人而不洁的，都送出营外； 3 无论男女，你们都要送出去；你们要把他们送出营外，免得他们玷污自己的营，这营就是我居住的。” 4 以色列人就这样行了，把他们送出营外；耶和华怎样吩咐摩西，以色列人就怎样行了。

赔偿条例

5 耶和华对摩西说： 6 “你要对以色列人说：无论男女，如果犯了人所犯的任何罪，以致得罪耶和华，那人就有了罪； 7 他（“他”直译是“他们”）要承认自己所犯的罪，把亏负人的损失，原数赔偿之外，另外加上五分之一，给予他亏负的人。 8 如果那人没有近亲可以把所亏负的赔偿给他，所亏负的，就要还给耶和华，就是归给祭司，此外还要献上为他赎罪的代罪公绵羊。 9 以色列人的一切圣物中，奉给祭司为举祭的，都要归给祭司。 10 各人所献的圣物，要归给祭司；人无论献给祭司甚么，都要归给祭司。”

疑妻不贞之试验方法与条例

11 耶和华对摩西说： 12 “你要告诉以色列人说：无论甚么人，如果他的妻子背离丈夫，对他不忠， 13 有人和她同寝，事情瞒过了丈夫，没有被查出，没有见证人指证她，犯罪时也没有被人捉住； 14 如果她的丈夫生了疑心，疑忌妻子，而妻子实在是被玷污了；又或者丈夫生了疑心，疑忌妻子，而妻子并没有被玷污， 15 这人就要把妻子带到祭司那里，又要为她带来供物，就是大麦面一公斤，不可浇上油，也不可加上乳香，因为这是疑忌的素祭，是思念的素祭，使人思念罪孽。

16 “祭司要使那妇人走进来，站在耶和华面前。 17 祭司要把圣水盛在瓦器里，又从帐幕的地面取些尘土，撒在水中。 18 祭司要使那妇人站在耶和华面前，松开她的头发，把思念的素祭，就是疑忌的素祭，放在她的手中，祭司的手里要拿着使人招致咒诅的苦水。 19 祭司要叫那妇人起誓，对她说：‘如果没有人与你同寝，作妻子时没有背弃丈夫被人玷污，你就免受这使人招致咒诅的苦水。 20 但是，如果你作妻子时背弃了丈夫，被人玷污了；如果你在你的丈夫以外，曾与别的男人同寝’， 21 这样，祭司就要叫那妇人发咒起誓，继续对她说：‘耶和华要使你的大腿消瘦，肚腹肿胀；愿耶和华叫你在你的族人中成为咒诅和起誓的话柄； 22 愿这招致咒诅的水进入你的腹中，使你的肚腹肿胀，大腿消瘦。’那妇人要说：‘阿们、阿们。’

23 “祭司要把这些咒诅的话写在卷上，又把所写的字洗在苦水里， 24 又要叫那妇人喝这招致咒诅的苦水，这招致咒诅的水要进入她里面，就引起痛苦。 25 祭司要从这妇人的手中取过那疑忌的素祭，把素祭在耶和华面前摇一摇，然后带到祭坛那里。 26 祭司要从素祭中取出一把来，作为记念，放在祭坛上焚烧，然后才叫妇人喝这水。 27 祭司叫她喝了这水以后，如果她被人玷污，对自己的丈夫不忠，这招致咒诅的水就必进入她里面，引起痛苦；她的肚腹必肿胀，大腿必消瘦；那妇人就要在她的族人中成为咒诅。 28 但是，如果这妇人没有被玷污，而是贞洁的，就不致受害，并且要怀孕生子。

29 “这是关于疑忌的律例：妻子在自己丈夫的权下，如果背离丈夫，被人玷污了； 30 或是人生了疑忌的心，疑忌自己的妻子，他就要叫那妇人站在耶和华的面前，祭司要对她执行这法例。 31 这样，男人可以免罪，妇人就要担当自己的罪孽。”

The Census

1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting(A) in the Desert of Sinai(B) on the first day of the second month(C) of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt.(D) He said: 2 “Take a census(E) of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families,(F) listing every man by name,(G) one by one. 3 You and Aaron(H) are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more(I) and able to serve in the army.(J) 4 One man from each tribe,(K) each of them the head of his family,(L) is to help you.(M) 5 These are the names(N) of the men who are to assist you:

from Reuben,(O) Elizur son of Shedeur;(P)

6 from Simeon,(Q) Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;(R)

7 from Judah,(S) Nahshon son of Amminadab;(T)

8 from Issachar,(U) Nethanel son of Zuar;(V)

9 from Zebulun,(W) Eliab son of Helon;(X)

10 from the sons of Joseph:

from Ephraim,(Y) Elishama son of Ammihud;(Z)

from Manasseh,(AA) Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;(AB)

11 from Benjamin,(AC) Abidan son of Gideoni;(AD)

12 from Dan,(AE) Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;(AF)

13 from Asher,(AG) Pagiel son of Okran;(AH)

14 from Gad,(AI) Eliasaph son of Deuel;(AJ)

15 from Naphtali,(AK) Ahira son of Enan.(AL)”

16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders(AM) of their ancestral tribes.(AN) They were the heads of the clans of Israel.(AO)

17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month.(AP) The people registered their ancestry(AQ) by their clans and families,(AR) and the men twenty years old or more(AS) were listed by name, one by one, 19 as the Lord commanded Moses. And so he counted(AT) them in the Desert of Sinai:

20 From the descendants of Reuben(AU) the firstborn son(AV) of Israel:

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben(AW) was 46,500.

22 From the descendants of Simeon:(AX)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300.(AY)

24 From the descendants of Gad:(AZ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 25 The number from the tribe of Gad(BA) was 45,650.

26 From the descendants of Judah:(BB)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 27 The number from the tribe of Judah(BC) was 74,600.

28 From the descendants of Issachar:(BD)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar(BE) was 54,400.(BF)

30 From the descendants of Zebulun:(BG)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400.(BH)

32 From the sons of Joseph:(BI)

From the descendants of Ephraim:(BJ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim(BK) was 40,500.

34 From the descendants of Manasseh:(BL)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200.

36 From the descendants of Benjamin:(BM)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin(BN) was 35,400.

38 From the descendants of Dan:(BO)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700.(BP)

40 From the descendants of Asher:(BQ)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 41 The number from the tribe of Asher(BR) was 41,500.

42 From the descendants of Naphtali:(BS)

All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali(BT) was 53,400.(BU)

44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron(BV) and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more(BW) who were able to serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.(BX) 46 The total number was 603,550.(BY)

47 The ancestral tribe of the Levites,(BZ) however, was not counted(CA) along with the others. 48 The Lord had said to Moses: 49 “You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle(CB) of the covenant law(CC)—over all its furnishings(CD) and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. 51 Whenever the tabernacle(CE) is to move,(CF) the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it.(CG) Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.(CH) 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard.(CI) 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle(CJ) of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall(CK) on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law.(CL)”

54 The Israelites did all this just as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Arrangement of the Tribal Camps

2 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2 “The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard(CM) and holding the banners of their family.”

3 On the east, toward the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to encamp under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.(CN) 4 His division numbers 74,600.

5 The tribe of Issachar(CO) will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar.(CP) 6 His division numbers 54,400.

7 The tribe of Zebulun will be next. The leader of the people of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon.(CQ) 8 His division numbers 57,400.

9 All the men assigned to the camp of Judah, according to their divisions, number 186,400. They will set out first.(CR)

10 On the south(CS) will be the divisions of the camp of Reuben under their standard. The leader of the people of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur.(CT) 11 His division numbers 46,500.

12 The tribe of Simeon(CU) will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.(CV) 13 His division numbers 59,300.

14 The tribe of Gad(CW) will be next. The leader of the people of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel.[a](CX) 15 His division numbers 45,650.

16 All the men assigned to the camp of Reuben,(CY) according to their divisions, number 151,450. They will set out second.

17 Then the tent of meeting and the camp of the Levites(CZ) will set out in the middle of the camps. They will set out in the same order as they encamp, each in their own place under their standard.

18 On the west(DA) will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim(DB) under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.(DC) 19 His division numbers 40,500.

20 The tribe of Manasseh(DD) will be next to them. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.(DE) 21 His division numbers 32,200.

22 The tribe of Benjamin(DF) will be next. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni.(DG) 23 His division numbers 35,400.

24 All the men assigned to the camp of Ephraim,(DH) according to their divisions, number 108,100. They will set out third.(DI)

25 On the north(DJ) will be the divisions of the camp of Dan under their standard.(DK) The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.(DL) 26 His division numbers 62,700.

27 The tribe of Asher will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Asher is Pagiel son of Okran.(DM) 28 His division numbers 41,500.

29 The tribe of Naphtali(DN) will be next. The leader of the people of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan.(DO) 30 His division numbers 53,400.

31 All the men assigned to the camp of Dan number 157,600. They will set out last,(DP) under their standards.

32 These are the Israelites, counted according to their families.(DQ) All the men in the camps, by their divisions, number 603,550.(DR) 33 The Levites, however, were not counted(DS) along with the other Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.

34 So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses; that is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each of them with their clan and family.

The Levites

3 This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses(DT) at the time the Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.(DU)

2 The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn(DV) and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(DW) 3 Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests,(DX) who were ordained to serve as priests. 4 Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord(DY) when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai.(DZ) They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar(EA) served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.(EB)

5 The Lord said to Moses, 6 “Bring the tribe of Levi(EC) and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him.(ED) 7 They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community(EE) at the tent of meeting by doing the work(EF) of the tabernacle. 8 They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle. 9 Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons;(EG) they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him.[b] 10 Appoint Aaron(EH) and his sons to serve as priests;(EI) anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.”(EJ)

11 The Lord also said to Moses, 12 “I have taken the Levites(EK) from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring(EL) of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine,(EM) 13 for all the firstborn are mine.(EN) When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the Lord.”(EO)

14 The Lord said to Moses in the Desert of Sinai,(EP) 15 “Count(EQ) the Levites by their families and clans. Count every male a month old or more.”(ER) 16 So Moses counted them, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.

17 These were the names of the sons of Levi:(ES)

Gershon,(ET) Kohath(EU) and Merari.(EV)

18 These were the names of the Gershonite clans:

Libni and Shimei.(EW)

19 The Kohathite clans:

Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.(EX)

20 The Merarite clans:(EY)

Mahli and Mushi.(EZ)

These were the Levite clans, according to their families.

21 To Gershon(FA) belonged the clans of the Libnites and Shimeites;(FB) these were the Gershonite clans. 22 The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 7,500. 23 The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle.(FC) 24 The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael. 25 At the tent of meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle(FD) and tent, its coverings,(FE) the curtain at the entrance(FF) to the tent of meeting,(FG) 26 the curtains of the courtyard(FH), the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar,(FI) and the ropes(FJ)—and everything(FK) related to their use.

27 To Kohath(FL) belonged the clans of the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites and Uzzielites;(FM) these were the Kohathite(FN) clans. 28 The number of all the males a month old or more(FO) was 8,600.[c] The Kohathites were responsible(FP) for the care of the sanctuary.(FQ) 29 The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side(FR) of the tabernacle. 30 The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan(FS) son of Uzziel. 31 They were responsible for the care of the ark,(FT) the table,(FU) the lampstand,(FV) the altars,(FW) the articles(FX) of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain,(FY) and everything related to their use.(FZ) 32 The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar(GA) son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible(GB) for the care of the sanctuary.(GC)

33 To Merari belonged the clans of the Mahlites and the Mushites;(GD) these were the Merarite clans.(GE) 34 The number of all the males a month old or more(GF) who were counted was 6,200. 35 The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.(GG) 36 The Merarites were appointed(GH) to take care of the frames of the tabernacle,(GI) its crossbars,(GJ) posts,(GK) bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use,(GL) 37 as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard(GM) with their bases, tent pegs(GN) and ropes.

38 Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east(GO) of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the tent of meeting.(GP) They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary(GQ) on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.(GR)

39 The total number of Levites counted(GS) at the Lord’s command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.(GT)

40 The Lord said to Moses, “Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more(GU) and make a list of their names.(GV) 41 Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites,(GW) and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the Lord.”(GX)

42 So Moses counted all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the Lord commanded him. 43 The total number of firstborn males a month old or more,(GY) listed by name, was 22,273.(GZ)

44 The Lord also said to Moses, 45 “Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine.(HA) I am the Lord.(HB) 46 To redeem(HC) the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, 47 collect five shekels[d](HD) for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel,(HE) which weighs twenty gerahs.(HF) 48 Give the money for the redemption(HG) of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons.”(HH)

49 So Moses collected the redemption money(HI) from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites. 50 From the firstborn of the Israelites(HJ) he collected silver weighing 1,365 shekels,[e](HK) according to the sanctuary shekel. 51 Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.

The Kohathites

4 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2 “Take a census(HL) of the Kohathite branch of the Levites by their clans and families. 3 Count(HM) all the men from thirty to fifty years of age(HN) who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.

4 “This is the work(HO) of the Kohathites(HP) at the tent of meeting: the care of the most holy things.(HQ) 5 When the camp is to move,(HR) Aaron and his sons are to go in and take down the shielding curtain(HS) and put it over the ark of the covenant law.(HT) 6 Then they are to cover the curtain with a durable leather,[f](HU) spread a cloth of solid blue over that and put the poles(HV) in place.

7 “Over the table of the Presence(HW) they are to spread a blue cloth and put on it the plates, dishes and bowls, and the jars for drink offerings;(HX) the bread that is continually there(HY) is to remain on it. 8 They are to spread a scarlet cloth over them, cover that with the durable leather and put the poles(HZ) in place.

9 “They are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand that is for light, together with its lamps, its wick trimmers and trays,(IA) and all its jars for the olive oil used to supply it. 10 Then they are to wrap it and all its accessories in a covering of the durable leather and put it on a carrying frame.(IB)

11 “Over the gold altar(IC) they are to spread a blue cloth and cover that with the durable leather and put the poles(ID) in place.

12 “They are to take all the articles(IE) used for ministering in the sanctuary, wrap them in a blue cloth, cover that with the durable leather and put them on a carrying frame.(IF)

13 “They are to remove the ashes(IG) from the bronze altar(IH) and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 Then they are to place on it all the utensils(II) used for ministering at the altar, including the firepans,(IJ) meat forks,(IK) shovels(IL) and sprinkling bowls.(IM) Over it they are to spread a covering of the durable leather and put the poles(IN) in place.

15 “After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move,(IO) only then are the Kohathites(IP) to come and do the carrying.(IQ) But they must not touch the holy things(IR) or they will die.(IS) The Kohathites are to carry those things that are in the tent of meeting.

16 “Eleazar(IT) son of Aaron, the priest, is to have charge of the oil for the light,(IU) the fragrant incense,(IV) the regular grain offering(IW) and the anointing oil. He is to be in charge of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and articles.”

17 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 18 “See that the Kohathite tribal clans are not destroyed from among the Levites. 19 So that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things,(IX) do this for them: Aaron and his sons(IY) are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry.(IZ) 20 But the Kohathites must not go in to look(JA) at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die.”

The Gershonites

21 The Lord said to Moses, 22 “Take a census also of the Gershonites by their families and clans. 23 Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age(JB) who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.

24 “This is the service of the Gershonite clans in their carrying and their other work: 25 They are to carry the curtains of the tabernacle,(JC) that is, the tent of meeting,(JD) its covering(JE) and its outer covering of durable leather, the curtains for the entrance to the tent of meeting, 26 the curtains of the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar,(JF) the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard,(JG) the ropes and all the equipment(JH) used in the service of the tent. The Gershonites are to do all that needs to be done with these things. 27 All their service, whether carrying or doing other work, is to be done under the direction of Aaron and his sons.(JI) You shall assign to them as their responsibility(JJ) all they are to carry. 28 This is the service of the Gershonite clans(JK) at the tent of meeting. Their duties are to be under the direction of Ithamar(JL) son of Aaron, the priest.

The Merarites

29 “Count(JM) the Merarites by their clans and families.(JN) 30 Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting. 31 As part of all their service at the tent, they are to carry the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts and bases,(JO) 32 as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, ropes,(JP) all their equipment and everything related to their use. Assign to each man the specific things he is to carry. 33 This is the service of the Merarite clans as they work at the tent of meeting under the direction of Ithamar(JQ) son of Aaron, the priest.”

The Numbering of the Levite Clans

34 Moses, Aaron and the leaders of the community counted the Kohathites(JR) by their clans and families. 35 All the men from thirty to fifty years of age(JS) who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting, 36 counted by clans, were 2,750. 37 This was the total of all those in the Kohathite clans(JT) who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the Lord’s command through Moses.

38 The Gershonites(JU) were counted by their clans and families. 39 All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting, 40 counted by their clans and families, were 2,630. 41 This was the total of those in the Gershonite clans who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the Lord’s command.

42 The Merarites were counted by their clans and families. 43 All the men from thirty to fifty years of age(JV) who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting, 44 counted by their clans, were 3,200. 45 This was the total of those in the Merarite clans.(JW) Moses and Aaron counted them according to the Lord’s command through Moses.

46 So Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel counted(JX) all the Levites by their clans and families. 47 All the men from thirty to fifty years of age(JY) who came to do the work of serving and carrying the tent of meeting 48 numbered 8,580.(JZ) 49 At the Lord’s command through Moses, each was assigned his work and told what to carry.

Thus they were counted,(KA) as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Purity of the Camp

5 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease[g](KB) or a discharge(KC) of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean(KD) because of a dead body.(KE) 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.(KF)” 4 The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses.

Restitution for Wrongs

5 The Lord said to Moses, 6 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Any man or woman who wrongs another in any way[h] and so is unfaithful(KG) to the Lord is guilty(KH) 7 and must confess(KI) the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution(KJ) for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. 8 But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram(KK) with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer.(KL) 9 All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him.(KM) 10 Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.(KN)’”

The Test for an Unfaithful Wife

11 Then the Lord said to Moses, 12 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘If a man’s wife goes astray(KO) and is unfaithful to him 13 so that another man has sexual relations with her,(KP) and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14 and if feelings of jealousy(KQ) come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure—or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure— 15 then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah[i](KR) of barley flour(KS) on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy,(KT) a reminder-offering(KU) to draw attention to wrongdoing.

16 “‘The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair(KV) and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy,(KW) while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse.(KX) 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray(KY) and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse(KZ) not harm you. 20 But if you have gone astray(LA) while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”— 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse(LB)—“may the Lord cause you to become a curse[j] among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22 May this water(LC) that brings a curse(LD) enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.”

“‘Then the woman is to say, “Amen. So be it.(LE)”

23 “‘The priest is to write these curses on a scroll(LF) and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24 He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. 25 The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord(LG) and bring it to the altar. 26 The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial[k] offering(LH) and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. 27 If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse.(LI) 28 If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.

29 “‘This, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray(LJ) and makes herself impure while married to her husband, 30 or when feelings of jealousy(LK) come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the Lord and is to apply this entire law to her. 31 The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences(LL) of her sin.’”
