Tentation de Jésus-Christ

4 Alors Jésus fut emmené par l’Esprit dans le désert, pour être tenté par le diable. 2 Après avoir jeûné quarante jours et quarante nuits, il eut faim. 3 Le tentateur, s’étant approché, lui dit: Si tu es Fils de Dieu, ordonne que ces pierres deviennent des pains. 4 Jésus répondit: Il est écrit: L’homme ne vivra pas de pain seulement, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu.[a]

5 Le diable le transporta dans la ville sainte, le plaça sur le haut du temple, 6 et lui dit: Si tu es Fils de Dieu, jette-toi en bas; car il est écrit:

Il donnera des ordres à ses anges à ton sujet;
Et ils te porteront sur les mains,
De peur que ton pied ne heurte contre une pierre.[b]

7 Jésus lui dit: Il est aussi écrit: Tu ne tenteras point le Seigneur, ton Dieu.[c]

8 Le diable le transporta encore sur une montagne très élevée, lui montra tous les royaumes du monde et leur gloire, 9 et lui dit: Je te donnerai toutes ces choses, si tu te prosternes et m’adores. 10 Jésus lui dit: Retire-toi, Satan! Car il est écrit: Tu adoreras le Seigneur, ton Dieu, et tu le serviras lui seul.[d]

11 Alors le diable le laissa. Et voici, des anges vinrent auprès de Jésus, et le servirent.

Début du ministère de Jésus-Christ à Capernaüm

12 Jésus, ayant appris que Jean avait été livré, se retira dans la Galilée. 13 Il quitta Nazareth, et vint demeurer à Capernaüm, située près de la mer[e], dans le territoire de Zabulon et de Nephthali, 14 afin que s’accomplisse ce qui avait été annoncé par Esaïe, le prophète:

15 Le peuple de Zabulon et de Nephthali,
De la contrée voisine de la mer, du pays au-delà du Jourdain,
Et de la Galilée des païens[f],
16 Ce peuple, assis dans les ténèbres,
A vu une grande lumière;
Et sur ceux qui étaient assis dans la région et l’ombre de la mort
La lumière s’est levée[g].

17 Dès ce moment Jésus commença à prêcher, et à dire: Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche.

Appel des premiers disciples

18 Comme il marchait le long de la mer de Galilée, il vit deux frères, Simon, appelé Pierre, et André, son frère, qui jetaient un filet dans la mer; car ils étaient pêcheurs. 19 Il leur dit: Suivez-moi, et je vous ferai pêcheurs d’hommes. 20 Aussitôt, ils laissèrent les filets, et le suivirent. 21 De là étant allé plus loin, il vit deux autres frères, Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et Jean, son frère, qui étaient dans une barque avec Zébédée, leur père, et qui réparaient leurs filets. 22 Il les appela, et aussitôt ils laissèrent la barque et leur père, et le suivirent.

Ministère de Jésus-Christ en Galilée

23 Jésus parcourait toute la Galilée, enseignant dans les synagogues, prêchant la bonne nouvelle du royaume, et guérissant toute maladie et toute infirmité parmi le peuple. 24 Sa renommée se répandit dans toute la Syrie, et on lui amenait tous ceux qui souffraient de maladies et de douleurs de divers genres, des démoniaques, des lunatiques, des paralytiques; et il les guérissait. 25 Une grande foule le suivit, de la Galilée, de la Décapole, de Jérusalem, de la Judée, et d’au-delà du Jourdain.

The Temptation of Jesus

4 (A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (B)to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had (C)fasted forty days and forty nights, He [a]then became hungry. 3 And (D)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (E)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘(F)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

5 Then the devil *took Him into (G)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,

‘(H)He will command His angels concerning You’;

and

‘On their hands they will bear You up,
So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

7 Jesus said to him, “[b]On the other hand, it is written, ‘(I)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

8 (J)Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, “(K)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [c]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘(L)You shall worship the Lord your God, and [d]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (M)angels came and began to minister to Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when Jesus heard that (N)John had been taken into custody, (O)He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and (P)settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:

15 “(Q)The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
[e]By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the [f]Gentiles—
16 “(R)The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”

17 (S)From that time Jesus began to [g]preach and say, “(T)Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

The First Disciples

18 (U)Now as Jesus was walking by (V)the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, (W)Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, “[h]Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, [i](X)James the son of Zebedee, and [j]John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Ministry in Galilee

23 Jesus was going (Y)throughout all Galilee, (Z)teaching in their synagogues and (AA)proclaiming the [k]gospel of the kingdom, and (AB)healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.

24 The news about Him spread (AC)throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, (AD)demoniacs, [l](AE)epileptics, (AF)paralytics; and He healed them. 25 Large crowds (AG)followed Him from Galilee and (AH)the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from (AI)beyond the Jordan.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a](B) by the devil.(C) 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights,(D) he was hungry. 3 The tempter(E) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,(F) tell these stones to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”(G)

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city(H) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,”(I) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    and they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]”(J)

7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]”(K)

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!(L) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]”(M)

11 Then the devil left him,(N) and angels came and attended him.(O)

Jesus Begins to Preach

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison,(P) he withdrew to Galilee.(Q) 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum,(R) which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill(S) what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
    the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”[f](T)

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(U) has come near.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(V)

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,(W) he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter(X) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,”(Y) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.(Z)

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.(AA) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.(AB)

Jesus Heals the Sick

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee,(AC) teaching in their synagogues,(AD) proclaiming the good news(AE) of the kingdom,(AF) and healing every disease and sickness among the people.(AG) 24 News about him spread all over Syria,(AH) and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed,(AI) those having seizures,(AJ) and the paralyzed;(AK) and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[g] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.(AL)
