Matthew 5

New Matthew Bible

In this chapter and the two next following is contained the most excellent and loving sermon of Christ in the Mount, which sermon is the very key that opens the understanding into the law. In this fifth chapter especially, he preaches of the 8 beatitudes, or blessings; of manslaughter, wrath, and anger; of adultery, of swearing, of suffering wrong; and of love, even toward a person’s enemies.

5 When Jesus saw the crowds of people, he went up into a mountain. And when he was seated, his disciples came to him. ²And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

³Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁴Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

⁵Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

⁶Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

⁷Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

⁸Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

⁹Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

¹⁰Blessed are those who suffer persecution for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹Blessed are you when men revile you, and persecute you, and falsely say all manner of evil things against you for my sake. ¹²Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For in the same way they persecuted the prophets that were before your days.

¹³You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt has lost her saltness, what can be salted with it? It is thereafter good for nothing but to be cast out and to be trodden underfoot by men.

¹⁴You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. ¹⁵Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it gives light to all who are in the house. ¹⁶Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

¹⁷Do not think that I have come to destroy the law or the prophets. No, I have not come to destroy them, but to fulfil them. ¹⁸For truly I say to you, till heaven and earth perish, not one jot or one tittle of the law shall escape, till all be fulfilled. ¹⁹Whosoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, he will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But whosoever observes and teaches them, the same will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰For I say to you, unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²¹You have heard how it was said to the people of the old time, You shall not kill. For whosoever kills will be liable to judgment. ²²But I say to you, whosoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment. Whosoever says to his brother, Racha! will be liable to a council. But whosoever says, You fool! will be liable to hell fire.

²³Therefore, when you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has anything against you, ²⁴leave your offering there before the altar, and go your way first and be reconciled to your brother; and then come and offer your gift.

²⁵Reconcile with your adversary quickly while you are in the way with him, lest the adversary commit you to the judge, and the judge commit you to the officer, and then you be cast into prison. ²⁶Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there till you have paid the last penny.

²⁷You have heard how it was said to the people of the old time, You shall not commit adultery. ²⁸But I say to you that whosoever looks on a wife, lusting after her, has committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹Therefore, if your right eye causes you to offend, tear it out and cast it from you. It is better for you that one of your members perish than that your whole body should be cast into hell. ³⁰Also, if your right hand causes you to offend, cut it off and cast it from you. Better it is that one of your members perish, than that all your body should be cast into hell.

³¹It is said, Whosoever puts away his wife, let him give her a testimonial also of the divorce. ³²But I say to you, whosoever puts away his wife (unless it be for fornication), causes her to break matrimony. And whoever marries her who is divorced, breaks wedlock.

³³Again, you have heard how it was said to the people of old time, Do not forswear yourself, but perform your oath to God. ³⁴But I say to you, do not swear at all – neither by heaven, for it is God’s seat, ³⁵nor yet by the earth, for it his footstool, nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of that great king. ³⁶Neither should you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. ³⁷But let your communication be yes, yes, and no, no. For whatever is more than that, comes of evil.

³⁸You have heard how it is said, An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. ³⁹But I say to you, do not resist wrong. But whosoever gives you a blow on your right cheek, turn to him the other. ⁴⁰And if any man would sue you at law and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. ⁴¹And whoever would compel you to go a mile, go with him two. ⁴²Give to him who asks, and from him who would borrow, turn not away.

⁴³You have heard how it is said, You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. ⁴⁴But I say to you, love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you. Pray for those who do you wrong and persecute you, ⁴⁵so that you may be the children of your Father that is in heaven. For he makes his sun to arise on the evil and on the good, and sends his rain on the just and the unjust. ⁴⁶For if you love those who love you, what reward should you have? Do not the publicans do the same? ⁴⁷And if you are friendly to your brethren only, what singular thing are you doing? Do not the publicans do likewise? ⁴⁸You must therefore be perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.

The Beatitudes

²And ^(C)he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

⁴“Blessed are ^(G)those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Salt and Light

¹³“You are the salt of the earth, ^(X)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

¹⁴^(Y)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵^(Z)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. ¹⁶In the same way, let your light shine before others, so ^(AA)that^[b] they may see your good works and ^(AB)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

¹⁷^(AC)“Do not think that I have come to abolish ^(AD)the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but ^(AE)to fulfill them. ¹⁸For truly, I say to you, ^(AF)until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. ¹⁹^(AG)Therefore whoever relaxes ^(AH)one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least ^(AI)in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great ^(AJ)in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds ^(AK)that of the scribes and Pharisees, you ^(AL)will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Anger

²¹^(AM)“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ^(AN)‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable ^(AO)to judgment.’ ²²But I say to you that ^(AP)everyone who is angry with his brother^[c] will be liable ^(AQ)to judgment; whoever insults^[d] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to ^(AR)the hell^[e] of fire. ²³^(AS)So if ^(AT)you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, ²⁴leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. ²⁵^(AU)Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. ²⁶Truly, I say to you, ^(AV)you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.^[f]

Lust

²⁷^(AW)“You have heard that it was said, ^(AX)‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ²⁸But I say to you that ^(AY)everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. ²⁹^(AZ)If your right eye ^(BA)causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into ^(BB)hell. ³⁰^(BC)And if your right hand ^(BD)causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into ^(BE)hell.

Divorce

³¹^(BF)“It was also said, ^(BG)‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ ³²^(BH)But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and ^(BI)whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Oaths

³³“Again ^(BJ)you have heard that it was said to those of old, ^(BK)‘You shall not swear falsely, but ^(BL)shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ ³⁴But I say to you, ^(BM)Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for ^(BN)it is the throne of God, ³⁵or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is ^(BO)the city of the great King. ³⁶And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. ³⁷Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; ^(BP)anything more than this comes from evil.^[g]

Retaliation

³⁸^(BQ)“You have heard that it was said, ^(BR)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ ³⁹But I say to you, ^(BS)Do not resist the one who is evil. But ^(BT)if anyone ^(BU)slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰And ^(BV)if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,^[h] let him have your cloak as well. ⁴¹And if anyone ^(BW)forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. ⁴²^(BX)Give to the one who begs from you, and ^(BY)do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Love Your Enemies

⁴³^(BZ)“You have heard that it was said, ^(CA)‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ ⁴⁴But I say to you, ^(CB)Love your enemies and ^(CC)pray for those who persecute you, ⁴⁵^(CD)so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and ^(CE)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. ⁴⁶^(CF)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? ⁴⁷And if you greet only your brothers,^[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even ^(CG)the Gentiles do the same? ⁴⁸^(CH)You therefore must be ^(CI)perfect, ^(CJ)as your heavenly Father is perfect.

³“How blessed are the poor in spirit!
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

⁴“How blessed are those who mourn!
for they will be comforted.

¹³“You are salt for the Land. But if salt becomes tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except being thrown out for people to trample on.

¹⁴“You are light for the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵Likewise, when people light a lamp, they don’t cover it with a bowl but put it on a lampstand, so that it shines for everyone in the house. ¹⁶In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they may see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.

¹⁷“Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. ¹⁸Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah — not until everything that must happen has happened. ¹⁹So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. ²⁰For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P’rushim, you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

Then come back and offer your gift. ²⁵If someone sues you, come to terms with him quickly, while you and he are on the way to court; or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer of the court, and you may be thrown in jail! ²⁶Yes indeed! On the contrary, if someone hits you on the right cheek, let him hit you on the left cheek too! ⁴⁰If someone wants to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well! ⁴¹And if a soldier forces you to carry his pack for one mile, carry it for two! ⁴²When someone asks you for something, give it to him; when someone wants to borrow something from you, lend it to him.

⁴³“You have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Love your neighbor^[i] — and hate your enemy.’ ⁴⁴But I tell you, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! ⁴⁵Then you will become children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun shine on good and bad people alike, and he sends rain to the righteous and the unrighteous alike. ⁴⁶What reward do you get if you love only those who love you? Why, even tax-collectors do that! ⁴⁷And if you are friendly only to your friends, are you doing anything out of the ordinary? Even the Goyim do that! ⁴⁸Therefore, be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, ²and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes^(A)

He said:

³“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.^(B)
⁴Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.^(C)

The Fulfillment of the Law

¹⁷“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.^(W) ¹⁸For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.^(X) ¹⁹Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands^(Y) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.^(Z)

Murder^(AA)

²¹“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,^[a]^(AB) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ ²²But I tell you that anyone who is angry^(AC) with a brother or sister^[b]^[c] will be subject to judgment.^(AD) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’^[d] is answerable to the court.^(AE) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.^(AF)

²³“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, ²⁴leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

²⁵“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. ²⁶Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Adultery

²⁷“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’^[e]^(AG) ²⁸But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.^(AH) ²⁹If your right eye causes you to stumble,^(AI) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. ³⁰And if your right hand causes you to stumble,^(AJ) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

³¹“It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’^[f]^(AK) ³²But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.^(AL)
