Jesus Handed Over to Pilate
27 When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death.(A) 2 After tying him up, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate,[a] the governor.(B)
Judas Hangs Himself
3 Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.(C) 4 “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.
“What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!” 5 So he threw the silver into the temple(D) and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not permitted(E) to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 They conferred together and bought the potter’s field with it as a burial place for foreigners. 8 Therefore that field has been called “Field of Blood” to this day. 9 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took[b] the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites, 10 and they gave[c] them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.[d](F)
Jesus Faces the Governor
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor.(G) “Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him.
Jesus answered, “You say so.”(H) 12 While he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he didn’t answer.(I)
13 Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how much they are testifying against you?” 14 But he didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.(J)
Jesus or Barabbas
15 At the festival(K) the governor’s custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted. 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.[e] 17 So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” (L) 18 For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.
19 While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of him.”(M)
20 The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus. 21 The governor asked them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?”
“Barabbas!” they answered.
22 Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ?”
They all answered, “Crucify him!” (N)
23 Then he said, “Why? What has he done wrong?”
But they kept shouting all the more, “Crucify him!” (O)
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood.[f] See to it yourselves!” (P)
25 All the people answered, “His blood be on us(Q) and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas to them and, after having Jesus flogged, handed him over to be crucified.(R)
Mocked by the Military
27 Then(S) the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole company[g] around him.(T) 28 They stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe.(U) 29 They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. And they knelt down before him and mocked him: “Hail, king of the Jews!” 30 Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head. 31 After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.(V)
Crucified Between Two Criminals
32 As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced him to carry his cross.(W) 33 When they came to a place called Golgotha(X) (which means Place of the Skull), 34 they gave him wine[h] mixed with gall to drink. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it. 35 After crucifying him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.[i](Y) 36 Then they sat down and were guarding him there. 37 Above his head they put up the charge against him in writing: This Is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
38 Then two criminals[j] were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.(Z) 39 Those who passed by were yelling insults at[k] him, shaking their heads(AA) 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” (AB) 41 In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders,[l] mocked him and said, 42 “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel!(AC) Let him[m] come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God rescue him now—if he takes pleasure in him![n] For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with him taunted him.(AD)
The Death of Jesus
45 From noon until three in the afternoon,[o] darkness came over the whole land.[p](AE) 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá[q] sabachtháni?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”[r](AF)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and offered him a drink.(AG) 49 But the rest said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.(AH) 51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary(AI) was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were also opened(AJ) and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
54 When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” (AK)
55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and looked after him were there, watching from a distance.(AL) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(AM)
The Burial of Jesus
57 When it was evening,(AN) a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple(AO) of Jesus. 58 He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. Then Pilate ordered that it[s] be released. 59 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, 60 and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.(AP) 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.
The Closely Guarded Tomb
62 The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate(AQ) 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(AR) 64 So give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples(AS) may come, steal him, and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take[t] guards,” Pilate told them. “Go and make it as secure as you know how.” 66 They went and secured the tomb by setting a seal on the stone and placing the guards.(AT)

27 Dès que le matin fut venu, tous les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens du peuple tinrent conseil contre Jésus, pour le faire mourir.
2 Après l'avoir lié, ils l'emmenèrent, et le livrèrent à Ponce Pilate, le gouverneur.
3 Alors Judas, qui l'avait livré, voyant qu'il était condamné, se repentit, et rapporta les trente pièces d'argent aux principaux sacrificateurs et aux anciens,
4 en disant: J'ai péché, en livrant le sang innocent. Ils répondirent: Que nous importe? Cela te regarde.
5 Judas jeta les pièces d'argent dans le temple, se retira, et alla se pendre.
6 Les principaux sacrificateurs les ramassèrent, et dirent: Il n'est pas permis de les mettre dans le trésor sacré, puisque c'est le prix du sang.
7 Et, après en avoir délibéré, ils achetèrent avec cet argent le champ du potier, pour la sépulture des étrangers.
8 C'est pourquoi ce champ a été appelé champ du sang, jusqu'à ce jour.
9 Alors s'accomplit ce qui avait été annoncé par Jérémie, le prophète: Ils ont pris les trente pièces d'argent, la valeur de celui qui a été estimé, qu'on a estimé de la part des enfants d'Israël;
10 et il les ont données pour le champ du potier, comme le Seigneur me l'avait ordonné.
11 Jésus comparut devant le gouverneur. Le gouverneur l'interrogea, en ces termes: Es-tu le roi des Juifs? Jésus lui répondit: Tu le dis.
12 Mais il ne répondit rien aux accusations des principaux sacrificateurs et des anciens.
13 Alors Pilate lui dit: N'entends-tu pas de combien de choses ils t'accusent?
14 Et Jésus ne lui donna de réponse sur aucune parole, ce qui étonna beaucoup le gouverneur.
15 A chaque fête, le gouverneur avait coutume de relâcher un prisonnier, celui que demandait la foule.
16 Ils avaient alors un prisonnier fameux, nommé Barabbas.
17 Comme ils étaient assemblés, Pilate leur dit: Lequel voulez-vous que je vous relâche, Barabbas, ou Jésus, qu'on appelle Christ?
18 Car il savait que c'était par envie qu'ils avaient livré Jésus.
19 Pendant qu'il était assis sur le tribunal, sa femme lui fit dire: Qu'il n'y ait rien entre toi et ce juste; car aujourd'hui j'ai beaucoup souffert en songe à cause de lui.
20 Les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens persuadèrent à la foule de demander Barabbas, et de faire périr Jésus.
21 Le gouverneur prenant la parole, leur dit: Lequel des deux voulez-vous que je vous relâche? Ils répondirent: Barabbas.
22 Pilate leur dit: Que ferai-je donc de Jésus, qu'on appelle Christ? Tous répondirent: Qu'il soit crucifié!
23 Le gouverneur dit: Mais quel mal a-t-il fait? Et ils crièrent encore plus fort: Qu'il soit crucifié!
24 Pilate, voyant qu'il ne gagnait rien, mais que le tumulte augmentait, prit de l'eau, se lava les mains en présence de la foule, et dit: Je suis innocent du sang de ce juste. Cela vous regarde.
25 Et tout le peuple répondit: Que son sang retombe sur nous et sur nos enfants!
26 Alors Pilate leur relâcha Barabbas; et, après avoir fait battre de verges Jésus, il le livra pour être crucifié.
27 Les soldats du gouverneur conduisirent Jésus dans le prétoire, et ils assemblèrent autour de lui toute la cohorte.
28 Ils lui ôtèrent ses vêtements, et le couvrirent d'un manteau écarlate.
29 Ils tressèrent une couronne d'épines, qu'ils posèrent sur sa tête, et ils lui mirent un roseau dans la main droite; puis, s'agenouillant devant lui, ils le raillaient, en disant: Salut, roi des Juifs!
30 Et ils crachaient contre lui, prenaient le roseau, et frappaient sur sa tête.
31 Après s'être ainsi moqués de lui, ils lui ôtèrent le manteau, lui remirent ses vêtements, et l'emmenèrent pour le crucifier.
32 Lorsqu'ils sortirent, ils rencontrèrent un homme de Cyrène, appelé Simon, et ils le forcèrent à porter la croix de Jésus.
33 Arrivés au lieu nommé Golgotha, ce qui signifie lieu du crâne,
34 ils lui donnèrent à boire du vin mêlé de fiel; mais, quand il l'eut goûté, il ne voulut pas boire.
35 Après l'avoir crucifié, ils se partagèrent ses vêtements, en tirant au sort, afin que s'accomplît ce qui avait été annoncé par le prophète: Ils se sont partagé mes vêtements, et ils ont tiré au sort ma tunique.
36 Puis ils s'assirent, et le gardèrent.
37 Pour indiquer le sujet de sa condamnation, on écrivit au-dessus de sa tête: Celui-ci est Jésus, le roi des Juifs.
38 Avec lui furent crucifiés deux brigands, l'un à sa droite, et l'autre à sa gauche.
39 Les passants l'injuriaient, et secouaient la tête,
40 en disant: Toi qui détruis le temple, et qui le rebâtis en trois jours, sauve-toi toi-même! Si tu es le Fils de Dieu, descends de la croix!
41 Les principaux sacrificateurs, avec les scribes et les anciens, se moquaient aussi de lui, et disaient:
42 Il a sauvé les autres, et il ne peut se sauver lui-même! S'il est roi d'Israël, qu'il descende de la croix, et nous croirons en lui.
43 Il s'est confié en Dieu; que Dieu le délivre maintenant, s'il l'aime. Car il a dit: Je suis Fils de Dieu.
44 Les brigands, crucifiés avec lui, l'insultaient de la même manière.
45 Depuis la sixième heure jusqu'à la neuvième, il y eut des ténèbres sur toute la terre.
46 Et vers la neuvième heure, Jésus s'écria d'une voix forte: Éli, Éli, lama sabachthani? c'est-à-dire: Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné?
47 Quelques-un de ceux qui étaient là, l'ayant entendu, dirent: Il appelle Élie.
48 Et aussitôt l'un d'eux courut prendre une éponge, qu'il remplit de vinaigre, et, l'ayant fixée à un roseau, il lui donna à boire.
49 Mais les autres disaient: Laisse, voyons si Élie viendra le sauver.
50 Jésus poussa de nouveau un grand cri, et rendit l'esprit.
51 Et voici, le voile du temple se déchira en deux, depuis le haut jusqu'en bas, la terre trembla, les rochers se fendirent,
52 les sépulcres s'ouvrirent, et plusieurs corps des saints qui étaient morts ressuscitèrent.
53 Étant sortis des sépulcres, après la résurrection de Jésus, ils entrèrent dans la ville sainte, et apparurent à un grand nombre de personnes.
54 Le centenier et ceux qui étaient avec lui pour garder Jésus, ayant vu le tremblement de terre et ce qui venait d'arriver, furent saisis d'une grande frayeur, et dirent: Assurément, cet homme était Fils de Dieu.
55 Il y avait là plusieurs femmes qui regardaient de loin; qui avaient accompagné Jésus depuis la Galilée, pour le servir.
56 Parmi elles étaient Marie de Magdala, Marie, mère de Jacques et de Joseph, et la mère des fils de Zébédée.
57 Le soir étant venu, arriva un homme riche d'Arimathée, nommé Joseph, lequel était aussi disciple de Jésus.
58 Il se rendit vers Pilate, et demanda le corps de Jésus. Et Pilate ordonna de le remettre.
59 Joseph prit le corps, l'enveloppa d'un linceul blanc,
60 et le déposa dans un sépulcre neuf, qu'il s'était fait tailler dans le roc. Puis il roula une grande pierre à l'entrée du sépulcre, et il s'en alla.
61 Marie de Magdala et l'autre Marie étaient là, assises vis-à-vis du sépulcre.
62 Le lendemain, qui était le jour après la préparation, les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens allèrent ensemble auprès de Pilate,
63 et dirent: Seigneur, nous nous souvenons que cet imposteur a dit, quand il vivait encore: Après trois jours je ressusciterai.
64 Ordonne donc que le sépulcre soit gardé jusqu'au troisième jour, afin que ses disciples ne viennent pas dérober le corps, et dire au peuple: Il est ressuscité des morts. Cette dernière imposture serait pire que la première.
65 Pilate leur dit: Vous avez une garde; allez, gardez-le comme vous l'entendrez.
66 Ils s'en allèrent, et s'assurèrent du sépulcre au moyen de la garde, après avoir scellé la pierre.

Jesús es entregado a Pilato
27 Cuando llegó la mañana, todos los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo celebraron consejo(A) para dar muerte a Jesús. 2 Y después de atar a Jesús, lo llevaron y lo entregaron(B) a Pilato, el gobernador(C).
Muerte de Judas
3 Entonces Judas(D), el que lo había entregado, viendo que Jesús había sido condenado, sintió remordimiento y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata (30 siclos: 432 gramos de plata)(E) a los principales sacerdotes y a los ancianos, 4 «He pecado entregando sangre inocente», dijo Judas. «A nosotros, ¿qué? ¡Allá tú[a](F)!», dijeron ellos.
5 Y arrojando las monedas de plata en el santuario(G), Judas se marchó; y fue y se ahorcó(H). 6 Los principales sacerdotes tomaron las monedas de plata, y dijeron: «No es lícito ponerlas en el tesoro del templo, puesto que es precio de sangre». 7 Y después de discutirlo, compraron con ellas el Campo del Alfarero para sepultura de los extranjeros. 8 Por eso ese campo se ha llamado Campo de Sangre(I) hasta hoy. 9 Entonces se cumplió lo anunciado[b] por medio del profeta Jeremías, cuando dijo: «(J)Y tomaron[c] las treinta monedas de plata, el precio de aquel cuyo precio había sido fijado por los israelitas; 10 y las dieron[d] por el Campo del Alfarero, como el Señor me había ordenado».
Jesús ante Pilato
11 (K)Jesús fue llevado delante del gobernador[e], y este[f] lo interrogó: «¿Eres Tú el Rey de los judíos(L)?». «Tú lo dices(M)», le contestó Jesús. 12 Al ser acusado por los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos, nada respondió(N). 13 Entonces Pilato le dijo*: «¿No oyes cuántas cosas testifican contra Ti?». 14 Jesús no le respondió ni a una sola pregunta[g], por lo que el gobernador estaba muy asombrado(O).
Jesús o Barrabás
15 (P)Ahora bien, en cada fiesta, el gobernador acostumbraba soltar un preso al pueblo, el que ellos quisieran. 16 Tenían entonces un preso famoso, llamado Barrabás. 17 Por lo cual, cuando ellos se reunieron, Pilato les dijo: «¿A quién quieren que les suelte: a Barrabás o a Jesús, llamado el Cristo(Q)?». 18 Porque él sabía que lo habían entregado por envidia. 19 Y estando Pilato sentado en el tribunal(R), su mujer le mandó aviso, diciendo: «No tengas nada que ver con ese Justo(S), porque hoy he sufrido mucho en sueños(T) por causa de Él».
20 Pero los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos persuadieron a las multitudes que pidieran a Barrabás y que dieran muerte a Jesús(U). 21 El gobernador les preguntó de nuevo: «¿A cuál de los dos quieren que les suelte?». Ellos respondieron: «A Barrabás». 22 Pilato les dijo*: «¿Qué haré entonces con Jesús, llamado el Cristo(V)?». «¡Sea crucificado!», dijeron* todos. 23 Pilato preguntó: «¿Por qué? ¿Qué mal ha hecho?». Pero ellos gritaban aún más: «¡Sea crucificado!».
24 Viendo Pilato que no conseguía nada, sino que más bien se estaba formando un tumulto(W), tomó agua y se lavó las manos delante de la multitud, diciendo: «Soy inocente de la sangre(X) de este Justo[h](Y). ¡Allá ustedes[i](Z)!». 25 Todo el pueblo contestó: «¡Caiga Su sangre sobre nosotros(AA) y sobre nuestros hijos!». 26 Entonces les soltó a Barrabás, y después de hacer azotar a Jesús, lo entregó para que fuera crucificado(AB).
Los soldados se burlan de Jesús
27 (AC)Entonces los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al Pretorio[j](AD), y reunieron alrededor de Él a toda la tropa[k](AE) romana. 28 Después de quitarle la ropa, le pusieron encima un manto escarlata(AF). 29 Y tejiendo una corona de espinas, la pusieron sobre Su cabeza(AG), y una caña[l] en Su mano derecha; y arrodillándose delante de Él, le hacían burla, diciendo: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos(AH)!». 30 Le escupían(AI), y tomaban la caña y lo golpeaban en la cabeza. 31 Después de haberse burlado de Él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron Sus ropas y lo llevaron para ser crucificado(AJ).
32 (AK)Y cuando salían, hallaron a un hombre de Cirene(AL) llamado Simón, al cual[m] obligaron a que llevara Su cruz.
La crucifixión
33 (AM)Cuando llegaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa Lugar de la Calavera(AN), 34 Le dieron a beber vino mezclado con hiel(AO); pero después de probarlo, no lo quiso beber(AP).
35 Y habiendo crucificado a Jesús, se repartieron Sus vestidos echando suertes[n](AQ); 36 y sentados, lo custodiaban allí(AR). 37 Pusieron sobre Su cabeza la acusación contra Él, que decía[o]: «ESTE ES JESÚS, EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS(AS)».
38 Entonces fueron crucificados* con Él dos ladrones, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda. 39 Los que pasaban lo injuriaban, meneando la cabeza(AT) 40 y diciendo: «Tú que destruyes el templo y en tres días lo reedificas(AU), sálvate a Ti mismo. Si Tú eres el Hijo de Dios, desciende de la cruz(AV)».
41 De igual manera, también los principales sacerdotes, junto con los escribas y los ancianos, burlándose de Él, decían: 42 «A otros salvó; a Él mismo no puede salvarse[p](AW). Rey de Israel es(AX); que baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en Él. 43 En Dios confía; que lo libre ahora si Él lo quiere(AY); porque ha dicho: “Yo soy el Hijo de Dios”». 44 En la misma forma lo injuriaban también los ladrones que habían sido crucificados con Él(AZ).
Muerte de Jesús
45 (BA)Desde la hora sexta[q] hubo oscuridad sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora novena[r]. 46 Y alrededor de la hora novena[s], Jesús exclamó a gran voz, diciendo: «Elí, Elí, ¿lema sabactani?». Esto es: «Dios Mío, Dios Mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado(BB)?».
47 Algunos de los que estaban allí, al oírlo, decían: «Este llama a Elías». 48 Al instante, uno de ellos corrió, y tomando una esponja, la empapó en vinagre, y poniéndola en una caña, le dio a beber(BC). 49 Pero los otros dijeron: «Deja, veamos si Elías lo viene a salvar[t]».
50 Entonces Jesús, clamando otra vez a gran voz, exhaló el espíritu(BD).
51 (BE)En ese momento el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo(BF), y la tierra tembló(BG) y las rocas se partieron; 52 y los sepulcros se abrieron, y los cuerpos de muchos santos que habían dormido(BH) resucitaron; 53 y saliendo de los sepulcros, después de la resurrección de Jesús, entraron en la santa ciudad(BI) y se aparecieron a muchos.
54 El centurión y los que estaban con él custodiando a Jesús(BJ), cuando vieron el terremoto(BK) y las cosas que sucedían, se asustaron mucho, y dijeron: «En verdad este era Hijo de Dios[u](BL)». 55 Y muchas mujeres(BM) que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea para servirle(BN), estaban allí, mirando de lejos. 56 Entre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María la madre de Jacobo y de José(BO), y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo(BP).
Sepultura de Jesús
57 (BQ)Al atardecer, vino un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, que también se había convertido en discípulo de Jesús. 58 Este se presentó a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Entonces Pilato ordenó que se lo entregaran. 59 Tomando José el cuerpo, lo envolvió en un lienzo limpio de lino, 60 y lo puso en su propio sepulcro nuevo que él había excavado en la roca. 62 Al día siguiente, que es el día después de la preparación[v](BT), se reunieron ante Pilato los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos, 63 y le dijeron[w]: «Señor, nos acordamos que cuando aquel engañador aún vivía, dijo: “Después de tres días resucitaré[x](BU)”. 64 Por eso, ordene usted que el sepulcro quede asegurado hasta el tercer día, no sea que vengan Sus discípulos, se lo roben, y digan al pueblo: “Él ha resucitado de entre los muertos”; y el último engaño será peor que el primero».
65 Pilato les dijo: «Una guardia(BV) tienen; vayan, asegúrenlo como ustedes saben». 66 Y fueron y aseguraron el sepulcro; y además de poner la guardia(BW), sellaron(BX) la piedra(BY).

Judas Hangs Himself
27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(A) 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(B) to Pilate the governor.(C)
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)
Jesus Before Pilate(L)
11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(M)
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)
32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(AZ)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)
The Burial of Jesus(BL)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)
